2010 Maverick Baseball

Hunter Pence became the highest drafted UT Arlington baseball player in school history when the Houston Astros selected him with the 64th overall selection in the second round of the 2004 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Pence had a breakthrough season in 2009 –his third season in the big leagues – batting .282 with 76 runs, 165 hits, 26 doubles, five triples, 25 home runs and 72 RBI. He was named to his first MLB All-Star Game as a reserve outfielder for the National League at the 80th Midsummer Classic at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. He marked career-highs in games played (159), base hits, walks (58), stolen bases (14) and tied a career-high for homers. He became the second former Maverick to be named to an All-Star team (John Lackey, 2001). Pence had a stellar rookie season in 2007 batting .322 with 30 doubles, 17 home runs, 69 RBI and a .539 slugging percentage. In 2007, his 56 extra-base hits, .322 batting average, .539 slugging percentage and 30 doubles all set Houston rookie records. He was a top candidate for N.L. Rookie of the Year, going into the All-Star Break leading the N.L. in batting average (.342), becoming the only rookie to lead either league in batting at the All-Star Break. Pence posted his first career walk-off home run in the 13th inning against Philadelphia on July 3, 2007. He tied an Astros rookie record by hitting a home run in three consecutive games (July 2-4) and was named the N.L. Rookie of the Month for May (.343, 19 RBI, 16 extra-base hits). Pence was also selected the N.L. Co-Player of the Week from May 14-20, 2007. Pence set the stage for his big-league success in double-A playing for Corpus Christi in 2006 when he hit .283 with 28 home runs and 17 stolen bases, leading the Hooks in home runs, RBI (95) and runs (97). Pence played football and baseball at Arlington HS before going to Texarkana College for his first collegiate season. At Texarkana, he hit .395 and swiped 33 bases. In his first season with UT Arlington he batted .347 and followed with a .395 average his junior season, which won him the Southland Conference batting title and ranks ninth all-time in UTA history.

Adam Moore became the ninth former Maverick to make his Major League debut on Sept. 17, 2009, starting behind the plate and batting in the 9-hole against the Chicago White Sox in Seattle. Moore went 0-for-5 at the plate, but it was what he did defensively that will make his debut a memorable one. Moore caught 14.0 innings, which is the most by a catcher in his big league debut since 1954, according to Stats Inc. and Baseball-Reference.com. The previous high was 12.0 innings by Jackie Moore (Detroit, 1965), Danny Breeden (Cincinnati, 1969), Ramon Hernandez (Oakland, 1999) and Wyatt Toregas (Cleveland, 2009). Also in his debut, Moore caught former Maverick Mark Lowe (2002-2004) during the 11th and 12th innings. On the season, Moore played in six games while recording a .217 batting average, one double, one home run and two RBI. Moore hit his first career home run with a solo shot to right field against Oakland on Sept. 30, in Seattle.
