Megan Spedden is in her first year working in the Tennessee Athletics Media Relations Department. She serves as the contact for women’s golf and the secondary contact for women’s basketball. Spedden came to Knoxville from Charlottesville, Va. where she graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in English and Media Studies in May of 2011. At Virginia, Spedden worked in the sports information department for three years, working primarily with the baseball program. The Virginia Beach, Va., native is working toward her Master’s degree in sport management and currently resides in Knoxville.

2011-12 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Lady Vols have proven their capability since the women’s golf program was added at Tennessee in 1993. The Orange and White has built a tradition of exellence, reaching the NCAA Championship in each of the last three seasons and making ten trips overall. The Lady Vols have finished every season in program history inside the postseason poll top 25.

PAVÓN SAYS:

The 2011-12 Lady Vols combine for 11 years of experience entering the season. Senior Nathalie Mansson and junior Erica Popson have combined to nab five All-America awards in 2010-11.

“I’m expecting a lot from our team. If we are ever going to do anything, this is the year to do it. There is no team in the country that you would say is absolutely better than our team. We need to have top-three or four finishes through all of these strong tournaments in the fall to put us where we need to be.”

THE NUMBERS SAY:

The Golf World-NGCA preseason coaches poll has the 2011-12 Lady Vols ranked No. 11 in the country. The Big Orange team is coming off a 13th-place finish in the NCAA Championship in the spring of 2011 and returns all five players from last year’s postseason lineup.

Additionally, Tennessee returns sophomores Kaitlyn Rohrback and Chessey Thomas who gained postseason experience last spring. The Orange and White alsso adds freshman AJ Newell to the lineup, the number nine recruit in the class of 2011.

THE NUMBERS SAY:

The Lady Vols’ schedule consists of four fall tournaments and four spring contests before heading into postseason play. Tennessee will play host to the Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Championship in October.

The Lady Vols will match up against strong fields in the fall as two of their fall tournaments will be hosted by teams in the preseason top 25: the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview (Vanderbilt, No. 15) and the Tar Heel Invitational (North Carolina, No. 9).

The Lady Vol golf program has been a consistent figure in the Southeastern Conference since head coach Judi Pavόn took the helm in 2000. The current president of the National Golf Coaches’ Association, Pavόn has catapulted Tennessee women’s golf to a new level as the Lady Vols have reached NCAA postseason competition in each of her seasons as head coach. Since naming Pavόn head coach, the Big Orange has captured 15 tournament titles, competed in in eight NCAA Championships, and been a constant presence in the top 25 rankings. The Lady Vols have finished every season under Pavόn inside the top 25. In Pavόn’s tenure the Orange and White has continued UT’s streak competing at the NCAA Regional Championships every season. Pavόn took charge of the Lady Vol golf program after serving as the interim head coach for the final two events of the 1999-2000 season and as assistant coach on The Hill for three seasons (1997-2000). Before coming to Rocky Top, Pavόn had a standout golf career, playing professionally from 1990-1994 and earning All-America Honors as a collegian at Alabama.  ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE SEASON

The Lady Vols had a tremendous 2010-11 campaign under 11th-year head coach Judi Pavόn, advancing to the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row, winning two tournaments, and producing a First-Team All-American. The Big 6

Orange compiled a staggering 131-61-3 head-to-head record and set the school record for lowest team stroke average in relation to par (8.47). Tennessee captured the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship title by 20 strokes in a Lady Vol record –low score of 15-under 849 in October and nabbed first place at the Rebel Intercollegiate by a whopping 30 strokes (8-under 863) in April. A second place finish at the NCAA West Regional carried UT back to the NCAA Championships, where the Lady Vols placed 13th and were led by sophomore Erica Popson’s 14th place performance. Popson had one of the finest seasons ever by a Lady Vol in 2010-11, capturing First Team All-America honors from the National Golf Coaches’ Association (NGCA) and GolfWeek. She also earned first team All-SEC accolades after nabbing first place in four consecutive tournaments in the spring, including medalist finishes at the SEC Championship and NCAA West Regional, where she won by five strokes. Her stroke average of 72.19 set a Lady Vol record, while her 16 par-or-better rounds tied the UT single-season mark. She led the nation in par-5 scoring (4.67) and finished No. 3 in the Golfstat Cup individual rankings. Achievement under Pavόn should come as no surprise, as not only does she have an extensive coaching background, but she was also a star golfer at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. Pavόn (formerly Schneider) graduated magna cum laude from the University of Alabama in 1989. At The Capstone

she was an NGCA All-American as a senior and a three-time NGCA Academic All-American. The SEC also tabbed Pavόn as a first-team all-conference selection in 1989. She claimed two individual titles and qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championships in 1989. Moreover, she was honored with the prestigious Paul “Bear” Bryant Student-Athlete of the Year Award. As a team the Crimson Tide finished ninth at the 1987 NCAA Championship in Alabama’s first-ever appearance. She led the club in stroke average her junior and senior seasons. After her collegiate career Pavόn continued her success in the professional ranks, where she competed in five LPGA major championships – the 1992 and 1997 LPGA Championships, 1991 and 1993 U.S. Open and the 1992 duMaurier Championship. She also captured the LPGA Southeast Section Championship in 1997. She was a member of the LPGA Tour from 1991-92 and competed on the FUTURES Tour in 1990 and 1993-94. Her career began in Montana as she became a prep star and captured the 1984 and 1985 Montana State High School titles. Additionally, she was crowned the state’s Amateur Champion in 1986 and 1989 and was inducted into the Montana State Women’s Golf Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Helena Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. She and her husband, Luis, a former UA golfer, live in Knoxville with their two daughters, Alexa and Maya.

OUTLOOK

UT’s only four-time All-American, played in four tournaments in 2011 and has career earnings of nearly $700,000. Yang has played in over 100 LPGA events and nabbed six top-10 performances since joining the tour in 2003. Her career-best finish of second place came at the 2004 Giant Eagle Classic. Angela Oh joins Yang on the LPGA Tour. Oh played for UT from 2006-08 and won the 2010 season opener on the LPGA Futures tour schedule, the Florida’s natural Charity Classic. She earned her LPGA Card after capturing five top-10 finishes to vault her among the tour’s top-10 money winners over the 2010 season. Current volunteer assistant Jessica Shepley earned her LPGA card in 2008 after finishing seventh in FUTURES Tour earnings. Shepley and ecent UT graduate Nicole Smith are also making their marks in their professional campaigns on the Duramed FUTURES Tour. Shepley has banked over $100,000 in seven years on the tour and captured her first FUTURES title at the International at Concord in July. Smith snagged two top-10 placements in her inaugural FUTURES season and was selected to compete on Golf Channel’s Big Break. Shepley played for Pavόn and the Big Orange from 2001-05, while smith competed from 2005-09. Both earned All-SEC and All-America honors during their careers at Tennessee. Playing for Pavόn also appears to be a great prep for a career in coaching after an athlete’s competitive days wrap up. Carrie Parnaby (née Cole), who played at UT from 1998-02 and then was an assistant coach at Rocky Top, was named the head women’s golf coach at UTSA in 2008. A pair of recent Tennessee grads nabbed coaching positions in the SEC in the summer of 2010. Gold Johansson Borst was named the head women’s golf coach at the University of Kentucky, while Vanderbilt selected Holly Clark (née Cantwell) to be its assistant coach. Borst played at Tennessee from 2002-06 before spending three years as an assistant coach at LSU. Clark played for Tennessee from 2003-07 and was previously the head coach at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. Most recently Diana Cantú was named assistant coach at Baylor University after playing for UT from 2006-10 and serving as a student assistant for the Lady Vols in 2010-11.

Former Lady Vol All-American Jessica Shepley rejoined Tennessee in 2009 as the third volunteer assistant for the women’s golf program. Shepley, a 2005 graduate of Tennessee, is one of four former Lady Vols, and Pavόn pupils, who have earned their LPGA Tour card. She became the third UT golfer to earn that distinction, following Violeta Retamoza and Young-A Yang. Shepley competed in five FUTURES Tour events in her seventh professional season in 2011. Her best finish occurred at The International at Concord where she took home the win. Also in August of 2010 Shepley competed in the LPGA Canadian Women’s Open. Since joining the Duramed FUTURES Tour in 2005, Shepley has career earnings of $100,600. Shepley earned her LPGA card in 2008 by finishing seventh on the FUTURES Tour money list to earn automatic Category 17 Priority status for the 2009 season. In 2009, her fifth professional season, the Oakville, Ontario, native won the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship and competed in three LPGA Tour events and 15 FUTURES Tour tournaments. In 2008 she had five top-five finishes in 17 FUTURES Tour events, including a runnerup finish at the Duramed Championship in June, where she fired a 54-hole total of 205 in Mason, Ohio. Shepley had one of the most decorated Lady Vol careers from 2001-05. At the 2004 NCAA Championships, she tied for fifth, matching the highest UT finish at the national tournament, with a 72-hole total of 73-7371-70=286 in Opelika, Ala. That year she also became the sixth Lady Vol to claim National Golf Coaches Association All-America accolades, earning honorable mention honors. She tied for fourth at the 2004 SEC Championships and bettered that performance by capturing third place at the 2005 conference tournament, firing a 221 in Tunica, Miss.,

and making par or better on 48 of 54 holes. For her career, Shepley ranks fifth all-time in UT history with 13 top-10 finishes and 22 rounds of par or better. Angie Boyd Keck is in her 17th year as a full-time staff member at UT. The women’s golf sport adminstrator, Boyd Keck was a member of the inaugural Lady Vol golf team in 1992 and captained the 1993-94 squad to a 13th-place NCAA finish in 1994. She earned a spot in the Lady Vol Hall of Fame in 2005. A 1994 graduate of Tennessee, Boyd Keck earned her bachelor’s degree in public administration. In 1997, she received her master’s in sport administration from UT. Boyd Keck and her husband, Kelly, reside in Dandridge with their son, Josh, and daughter, Sidney.

Kelly Bender is in her second year as a manager for the Lady Vol golf team. A sophomore at Tennessee, she is currently enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in sport management. She played six years of varsity golf for Sleepy Hollow (N.Y.) High School where she was named allsection and all-league.

Greig Cryer, a native of Charleston, S.C., is in his first year as an academic counselor at the University of Tennessee. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in Experimental Psychology and the University of Tennessee with a Master of Science Degree in Sport Psychology. At the University of South Carolina, Greig was a three-time All-America team member. After two successful years as an intern in academic support at the USC and UT, Greig now oversees academic support for the women’s golf team and the football team

Catherine Johnson is in her 14th year as assistant athletic trainer. She provides medical coverage for the golf team, as well as manages daily athletic training department operations for all sports. She has been a member of the staff at Tennessee since 1994. She graduated from Guilford College in 1994 with a degree in sports medicine, received her master’s degree in sports psychology from UT in 1997.

Patrick Lawson is entering his third year on the event management staff at Tennessee. He begins his third season as his office’s primary contact working with softball and is starting his second year with soccer and women’s golf. A 2010 UT graduate with a bachelor’s degree in sport management, he is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Rocky Top in sport psychology and motor behavior. He and his wife Caroline have two daughters, Madeline and Olivia.

Judy Porterfield is in her 17th year with the University of Tennessee Athletics Department, working primarily with golf, volleyball, computer support and strength and conditioning. In her spare time she enjoys swimming, planting flowers, and playing tennis with her grandsons. Porterfield lives in Knoxville and is a proud grandmother to daughter Jessie and son-in-law Will Cogdill’s boys, Garrett and Colby.

Jenna Waters is beginning her first year as the Sports Nutrition Assistant. She received her Bachelor’s degree in nutrition from the University of Tennessee in 2009, and will complete her Master’s degree in Nutrition Science in December 2011. Jenna is a Registered Dietitian and she resides in Maryville with her husband Brandon.

Now in his 17th year with Tennessee Athletics, Joe Whitney oversees the provision of mental training services to all UT athletes and teams. A 1982 graduate of Springfield College, he coached basketball and football in New York City for 13 years before leaving coaching to pursue graduate study in sport psychology. Whitney obtained a master’s from the University of Virginia in 1997 and a Ph.D. from Tennessee in 2000. 6TH SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS I 2ND NCAA WEST REGIONAL I 13TH NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The Tennessee Lady Vol golf team cemented its place on the short list of elite collegiate programs with a third-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and a top-10 final ranking in 2010-11. The Lady Vols had a tremendous season under 11th-year head coach Judi Pavόn, advancing to the national tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons, winning two tournaments and producing a First Team All-American. The Big Orange compiled a staggering 131-61-3 head-tohead record and set the school record for lowest team stroke average in relation to par at (8.47). Tennessee captured the Mercedes-Women’s Collegiate Championship title by 20 strokes in a Lady Vol 54-hole record-low score of 15-under 849 in October and nabbed firstplace at the Rebel Intercollegiate by a whopping 30 strokes (8-under 863) in April. A second-place finish at the NCAA West Regional carried UT to the NCAA Championship, where the Lady Vols placed 13th and were led by sophomore Erica Popson’s 14thplace performance. Popson, a Davenport, Fla., native had one of the finest seasons ever by a Lady Vol, capturing First Team All-America honors from the NGCA, First Team All-SEC accolades and nabbing first-place in four consecutive tournaments in the spring, including medalist finishes at the SEC Championship and West Regional, where she won by five strokes. Her stroke average of 72.19 set a Lady Vol record, while her 16 par or better rounds tied the UT single-season mark. She led the nation in par-5 scoring (4.67) and finished at No. 3 in the Golfstat Cup individual rankings. Her four wins are already a Lady Vol career record. Joining Popson in the lineup for UT were junior Nathalie Mansson, sophomore Sara Monberg and freshmen Kaitlyn Rohrback and Chessey Thomas. Mansson captured All-SEC Second Team honors, honor24

able mention All-America accolades and ranked second for the Lady Vols with a 74.47 stroke average. She won the Rebel Intercollegiate in the spring. Monberg collected four top-15 performances and finished with a 74.71 average. Rohrback was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team with a 76.04 average, while Thomas managed a 76.45 average. Thomas capped her rookie campaign by firing her best score of the season a 68, in the final round of the NCAA Championship. Seniors Lauren Spurlock and Rebecca Watson wrapped up their Orange and White careers by competing in three tournaments and one event, respectively, and sophomore Leigh Henderson played in three competitions. UT wrapped up the 2010-11 campaign slated No. 10 in both the final Golfstat rankings and the Golfweek ratings. The Big Orange also finished No. 12 in the final Golf World/ NGCA Coaches Poll. Tennessee’s first tournament of the season didn’t foreshadow great success, however. Popson struggled in pretournament qualifying after missing most of the summer season recovering from injury and did not make the trip to the NCAA Fall Preview from Sept. 13-15 in College Station, Texas. Without their No. 1 golfer, the Lady Vols finished 18th in a loaded field. Mansson led the way with a tied-for-42nd place finish, while Thomas made her collegiate debut with an 81st-place performance. Monberg, Henderson and Spurlock rounded out Tennessee’s first lineup of the season. Led by Mansson (t8th), the Orange and White rebounded two weeks later at the Golfweek Challenge in Wolcott, Colo., to finish fifth. Popson returned and tied for 16th, while Thomas (t24th) and Monberg (t26th) also finished well. Tennessee hosted the annual Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship in October and came away with a second-consecutive individual and team sweep.

TEAM TOURNAMENT WINS

INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT WINS

 The Lady Vols captured two tournament titles as a team in 2010-11, the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Rebel Intercollegiate.

 Erica Popson nabbed four individual tournament wins and Mansson added another to bring home five individual wins for Tennessee.

Popson won her first career tournament in sudden death fashion at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville. She drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the 385-yard, par-four 10th hole to earn the individual crown over Ole Miss junior Natalie Gleadall. Popson followed in the footsteps of Mansson, who won last year’s crown via a five-hole playoff. Her score of 9-under 207 set a new Lady Vol record. Tennessee also claimed its second straight and third overall Mercedes-Benz team title, shooting a three-day total of 849, which broke the UT record by seven strokes. The Lady Vols carded a 285 on the final day to win by a total of 20 strokes. Monberg had her finest performance of the season, a fourth-place finish and a career-best 7-under 209 total. Mansson tied for 19th, while Thomas, Rohrback and Spurlock and tied for 23rd.

2010-11 SEASON REVIEW double-bogey on her first hole of the day, No. 10. Tennessee ended the season with a 13th-place finish at the Traditions Club Golf Course in Bryan, Texas. Popson streak of first-place performances stopped at the Texas A&Mhosted competition. UT’s No. 1 golfer rebounded from a slow start to place 14th, however. Monberg (t45th), Mansson (t88th), Rohrback (t95th) and Thomas (t102nd) joined their teammate at the national championships. Those five could be back at the final tournament in 2012 as each of Tennessee’s postseason participants returns for the 2011-12 season with Mansson as the lone senior. The future is bright in Big Orange country. The 2010-11 season serves as proof of how far Judi Pavόn has taken the program and how far it can go.

COACHES LADY VOLS REVIEW HISTORY

Benz score earlier in the season as the lowest mark in Lady Vol history. The win made her the first NCAA Division I golfer to capture medalist honors in four straight tournaments since LPGA-great Lorena Ochoa won seven straight for Arizona in 2001-02. Popson paced a strong Lady Vol effort, as the Orange and White captured second and advanced to the program’s 10th NCAA Championship. Monberg nearly joined Popson on the All-Regiona Team with a tied-for-11th place finish. Mansson tied for 25th, while Rohrback and Thomas both tied for 52nd. The West Regional was a homecoming of sorts for Thomas, a Spokane, Wash., native. The rookie Lady Vol even recorded her first collegiate hole-in-one early on the first day, putting her tee shot on the par-3, 150-yard 11th hole right into the cup after making a

The Big Orange finished eighth at the ultra-competitive Pac-10/SEC Challenge, defeating six top-25 teams at the event in Stanford, Calif., in early November. Mansson tied for 13th to lead the way, while Popson and Rohrback both tied for 27th. Tennessee opened the spring with a 13th-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship in February as Mansson and Popson both tied for 22nd. UT quickly bounced back to tie for third at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic in March. In Baton Rouge, La., Popson tied for seventh, while Monberg tied for 11th and Thomas tied for 26th. Popson won her second tournament of the season at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summitt, N.C. Tied for eighth and four shots back heading into the final day, Popson vaulted up the leaderboard by firing a 1-over 73 on the final day in drizzling, cold conditions to capture medalist honors by one stroke. She finished with a 70-77-73=220 (+4) total to lead the Lady Vols to a runner-up placement. Rohrback and Mansson both tied for seventh to aid in the second-place effort. A week later, the Lady Vols had their most dominating performance of the season, winning the Rebel Intercollegiate by 30 strokes as Popson and Mansson tied for first. Tennessee set a tournament record by 14 strokes with a three day total of 1-under 863. Mansson edged Popson in a playoff for medalist honors as both tallied 2-under 213 scores. Monberg tied for sixth at the tournament, while Rohrback (11th) and Thomas (t12th) also managed strong finishes. Popson continued to cruise at the SEC Championship from April 15-17 in Auburn, Ala. She opened the tournament with a career-best 6-under 66 and never looked back, fending off a late charge from National Player of the Year Marta Silva, of Georgia, to win by one stroke with a 6-under 2010. A day before her 20th birthday, Popson gave herself an early gift by becoming the second Lady Vol ever to win the SEC Championship. In 2010 Popson tied for first after 54 holes at the conference tournament, but fell in a playoff to Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex. UT finished sixth as a team at the league finale with Mansson tying for 17th. Popson nabbed her fourth-consecutive first-place at the NCAA West Regional in Auburn, Wash., the first week of May, taking medalist honors by five strokes and leading UT to second-place. Her total of 8-under 208 ranks behind only her Mercedes-

She became the first UT women’s golfer to earn first-team All-America honors from the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). 

Former Lady Vol Assistants Mike Whitson and Andrew Pratt have gone on to be named to head coaching positions of their own. Whitson left the Orange and White to take the head coaching position at Eastern Kentucky. The University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf team is fortunate to have membership priveleddges at three of the top country clubs in Knoxville. Additionally, the Lady Vols have their choice of nine Egwani Farms Golf Club other facilities all within an hour of campus.  HOLSTON HILLS COUNTRY CLUB YARDAGE: 6,297 PAR: 72  Located just east of campus on the banks of the Holston Rover, Holston Hills is the fifthranked course in the state of Tennessee. It is a long course with this Bermuda rough and fast, tricky bent grass greens. Designed in 1927 by legendary Scottish designer Donald Ross, it has a long history of hosting prestigious events including the men’s NCAA Championships (twice), the U.S. Open, USGA women’s mid-amateur and the UT men’s golf Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. Holston Hills was recently restored to its original design and now is ranked as one of the most classical courses in America by Golf Digest. The course will host the Mercedes-Benz SEC/ Pac-12 Challenge in October. 40

 Fox Den is a course that features bent grass greens and narrow, treelined and well-bunkered fairways. Water hazards are a factor on numerous holes, including three greens (13, 16 and 18) which are almost completely surrounded by water. Designed by William Byrd in 1969, it underwent a million-dollar renovation in 2004. Fox Den serces as the host for the Nationwide Tour event, the Knoxville Open.

 CHEROKEE COUNTRY CLUB YARDAGE: 5,932 PAR: 71  Founded in 1907 on the hills overlooking the Tennessee River, Cherokee is unquestionably the most exclusive club in the Knoxville area. Its current layout was designed by the famed architect Donald Ross. The fairways are tight and lined with trees, with fast, undulating bent grass greens. Among the amenities available to these student athletes are the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center, the Lady Vol weight room and the Lady Vol training room.

 THE THORNTON CENTER  The Thornton Athletics Student Life Center is a state-of-the art, 33,000-square foot facility that provides studentathletes with academic counseling and career development services.  With 14 full-time staff members, the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center offers academic counseling services, career development program, student development program, comprehensive tutoring program, writing lab, math lab, computer lab, and accommodations for students with special needs.  Student-athletes at Tennessee receive topflight academic support through the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center.

LADY VOL WEIGHT ROOM The Lady Vol weight room is approximately 4, 500 sqare feet and equipped primarily with free weights which allow for optimal functional training and athletic enhancement. The Lady Vol weight room environment is one of amaraderie and competition at the highest levels. this favility and its staff are dedicated to meet the unique needs of UT’s female student-athletes.

LADY VOL TRAINING ROOM The sports medicine staff operates out of one main athletic training room, Stokely Athletic Center, and four state-of- theart satellite facilities. All of these facilities are equipped with the most cutting edge modality and rehabilitation tools on the market, which enables the student athletes to receive the highest standard of care.

The formation of the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department for the 1976-77 academic year prompted much discussion concerning a proper nickname for the distaff athletes. After long consideration and debate, it was decided the female student-athletes would be known as “Lady Volunteers” or “Lady Vols.” The University of Tennessee, as the state’s land grant university, draws the nickname of its athletic teams (Volunteers) from the name most associated with the state. Tennessee acquired the name “The Volunteer State” in the early days of the 19th Century when General Andrew Jackson mustered large armies from his home state to fight the Indians and later the British at the Battle of New Orleans. The name became even more prominent in the Mexican War when Governor Aaron V. Brown issued a call for 2,800 men to battle Santa Anna, and some 30,000 volunteered. The name “Volunteers” or “Lady Volunteers” is frequently shortened to “Vols” or “Lady Vols” for the men’s and women’s athletic teams.

The colors Orange and White were selected by Charles Moore, a member of the first football team in 1891, and were later approved by a vote of the student body. The colors were those of the common American daisy which grew in profusion on “The Hill.”

Over 40 years ago, a husband-wife song writing team, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant from Gatlinburg, Tenn., penned the song “Rocky Top.” Since that time, the tune has emerged as the unofficial fight song for UT athletic teams.

Tennessee is one of a handful of women’s athletics programs that sponsors its own varsity cheerleading squad complete with full grant-inaid. The Lady Vol cheerleaders and mascot Smokey are chosen from a large try-out group in the spring.

 THE VOLUNTEER STATUE

The spirit of university youth and its ideal of service, the statue was cast, placed in Circle Park and unveiled on April, 19, 1968. Unearthed in the 1960s, “The Rock” soon thereafter became a “canvas” for student messages. For years the university sandblasted away the messages but eventually deferred to students’ public artistic endeavors at the corner of Volunteer Blvd. and Pat Head Summitt Street.

STATEMENT

 CHEERLEADERS

Good sportsmanship is a necessary ingredient for wholesome athletic competition. The University of Tennessee cherishes the reputation its fans, students and athletes have earned for sportsmanship and for extending hospitality to our visitors. The Athletics Department urges Lady Vols fans to conduct themselves in such a way that will enhance the University’s reputation for providing a cordial atmosphere at sporting events.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

The official mascot is Smokey, a rather pleasant blue tick coon hound that has been on the job since 1953. The dog is a native breed of Tennessee and is in a line of canines used for hunting raccoons. The present Smokey, the ninth in a line of such dogs provided by the family of the late Rev. W.C. Brooks of Knoxville, is appropriately called Smokey IX. Smokey was chosen as a result of the 1953 Pep Club contest to select a mascot. At Lady Vol events, a human version of Smokey accompanies the cheerleaders.
