FIRST SERVE THE OLE MISS MATCH  Ole Miss and Tennessee meet for the 47th time this Friday in an 8 p.m. ET match.  The Lady Vols hold a commanding 40-6 edge alltime in the series, and enters the match having won nine in a row against the Rebels. UT has won 23 of the last 25 meetings. Friday’s match marks the 20th meeting in Oxford, where Tennessee has lost only one match and is 18-1 all-time. UT’s lone loss in Oxford came in five sets on Nov. 2, 2007.  28 of the matches between the two sides have been decided in straight-sets - with UT winning all but three of them - while there has been nine four-set matches and nine that needed all five sets to decide a winner.  Head coach Rob Patrick is an impressive 22-2 against the Rebels, including an 11-1 mark on the road.

THE MISSISSIPPI STATE MATCH  Sunday afternoon’s match against the Mississippi State Bulldogs marks the 51st all-time meeting.  Tennessee swept the Bulldogs in both meetings last season, and has won 10 consecutive matches against MSU. Of the 10 straight wins, nine have been in three sets. UT owns a 43-7 advantage all-time in the series.  The Big Orange has won 25 of the last 26 against Mississippi State. The Lady Vols have not lost to the Bulldogs since Sept. 24, 2005.  Head Coach Rob Patrick has a near-perfect 25-1 record against Mississippi State since taking over the program in 1997.  The lone strength of the Mississippi State squad has been its defensive back row play. The Bulldogs currently rank second in the league - just one spot behind UT - in digs per set (17.30). Libero Roxanne McVey ranks second, just behind UT’s Ellen Mullins, in digs per set, averaging 5.62.  Tennessee assistant coach Rachel Cooper is a former standout for the Bulldogs where she ranks third in the record books for MSU’s all-time career kills with 1,405. She also was the first Bulldog to earn an SEC weekly honor.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Requests for working media credentials should be directed to volleyball contact Cassandra Novy. Those wishing to attend a match are asked to call the Media Relations Office to be placed on the pass list. Photo credentials will be issued only to accredited photographers or those individuals on special assignment. Because there are specifically designated areas for photographers, we ask that anyone shooting a Lady Vol volleyball match at Thompson-Boling Arena check with Cassandra prior to the start of the contest.

RADIO Thompson-Boling Arena is available for radio broadcasts through UT Telephone Services. In order to access these lines, those interested in broadcasting a particular match need to inform the UT Athletics Media Relations Office in writing at their earliest convenience and no later than three weeks prior to the contest. Radio stations also will need to contact UT Telephone Services at (865) 974-3121 to order a telephone line for use at the contest(s).

STATISTICAL SERVICES Services provided include statistics generated from the StatCrew computer program. Match statistics will be handed to all attending members of the media and sports information personnel after every game. Following the conclusion of the match, final statistics will be faxed/emailed to the visiting sports information director’s fax/ email list. Results will also be emailed to the sports information contact of visiting teams at the conclusion of the match in lieu of a sports information representative traveling with his or her team. Arrangements should be made in advance for any additional services.

INTERVIEWS Interviews will be available following the match after a 10-minute cooling-off period. Media wishing to interview the coaches or any players other than on game days are required to set up interviews with 24 hours notice through Cassandra Novy in the UT Media Relations Office.

» Senior Ellen Mullins earned her sixth SEC Defensive Player of the Week recognition after scooping up 47 digs in two matches last week, averaging 6.71 per set.

MULLINS MAKING HER MARK  Senior libero Ellen Mullins has been the prominent figure in Tennessee’s defense this season, as well as throughout her career.  Through 19 games this season, Mullins is averaging 6.09 digs per set, a mark that leads the nation and league.  The Nashville native is the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week after scooping up 47 digs in two matches last week, averaging 6.71 per set. She had 32 digs in UT’s four-set loss to Arkansas, her fifth game this season with 30 or more digs. It was the sixth time Mullins has been recognized in her career.  Mullins was named to the Tennessee Invitational All-Tournament Team after tallying 88 digs for an average of 7.33 per set.  During the Comcast Lady Vol Classic, Mullins scooped up 69 digs, averaging 4.60 through the weekend.  In the opening match of the Country Inns & Suites Invitational against Chattanooga, the Nashville native scooped up 28 digs in three sets, a program best during the 25-point rally scoring era. She followed up with 31 digs in four sets against UNC Asheville, another Lady Vol record during the 25-point rally scoring era.  After being named to the Cincinnati Invitational All-Tournament Team, the Nashville native picked up her fifth career SEC recognition as she was tabbed this week’s SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3.

» Through 69 sets this season, UT has held its opponents to hitting at just a .177 clip, which is fourth-best in the SEC.

She followed with 25 assists and 10 scoops at Kentucky.  The Palm Springs, Calif., native registered two double-doubles in three games of the Tennessee Invitationa.  In the Comcast Lady Vol Classic, Dempsey recorded three double-doubles in four games, including a career-best 51 assists with 16 digs.  Dempsey has handed out 40 or more assists in seven matches this season, and averages 9.39 per set.  Freshman Ashley Mariani registered her first career double-doubles in the Tennessee Invitational as the Arlington, Texas product put down 12 kills and scooped up a career-best 17 digs against Jacksonville State.  She followed up with 10 kills and 10 digs against Coastal Carolina.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT  The Lady Vols fell to Mizzou, 3-0 (27-25, 10-25-10, 25-16) and dropped a tough four-set loss to Arkansas (25-13, 25-27, 20-25, 22-25) at home.  Ellen Mullins recorded her fifth game this season with 30 or more digs as she scooped up 32 against Arkansas. Junior Shealyn Kolosky tied a career-best in kills with 11, and had a team-best .455 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lexi Dempsey dished out 40 assists, her seventh match this year with 40 or more assists.

 Mullins hit the 1,500-dig plateau against South Carolina as the senior libero now has 1,581 career digs, sitting second on UT’s all-time career digging chart.  Mullins sits 174 digs behind Chloe Goldman (1,755) with 13 regular season matches remaining. In the first

» Under head coach Rob Patrick, Tennessee is 47-3 all-time against Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Shealyn Kolosky recorded 31 kills, averaging 2.07 per set and hit .203. Junior Carly Wishlow hit .286 on the weekend, registering 25 kills, while sophomore Lexi Dempsey handed out 155 helpers, averaging 10.33 per set with 3.00 digs per set. Freshman Jamie Lea slammed down a team-best 46 kills, averaging 3.07 per game.

TAKING THE TOURNAMENT TITLE  Competing for the tournament title for the second weekend in a row, Tennessee captured the Country Inns & Suites Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn., defeating Chattanooga, UNC Asheville, UT Martin and Charlotte.  Senior libero Ellen Mullins, sophomore setter Lexi Dempsey and freshman outside hitter Jamie Lea were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Mullins picked up MVP honors.  During the tournament, Mullins set two UT records in most digs in three sets (28) and four sets (31) during the 25-point rally scoring era. She averaged 7.00 scoops per set during the tournament.  Dempsey posted three double-doubles over four games, including a career-best 47 assists and 14 digs against UNC Asheville. Dempsey had three consecutive games dishing out 40 or more assists.  Against UNC Asheville, Lea put down 23 kills, hitting at a .212 clip. Over the tournament, she led the team hitting .302 with 67 kills.  Junior Shealyn Kolosky tallied 31 kills with a .329 hitting percentage during the tournament.

MULLINS, MARIANI ALL-TOURNAMENT  Tennessee volleyball senior Ellen Mullins and freshman Ashley Mariani were named to the Cincinnati Invitational All-Tournament Team.  Mullins averaged 6.55 digs per set at the tournament. She had 20 or more digs in all three matches over the weekend, totaling 72 digs. She recorded 31 in the opening game of the season against Morehead State, the most in the league in 2013. three shy of her career-best (34).  In her Lady Vol debut, Mariani posted 10 kills with four blocks. She followed up with 14 kills, hitting at a .316 clip, both team-bests, while adding two blocks. She capped off her weekend with 14 more kills against Butler, hitting .290 with two blocks.

FRESHMEN CLASS GARNERS NATIONAL RECOGNITION  The 2013 signing class includes three national top-50 recruits in middle blocker Raina Hembry, outside hitter Jamie Lea and middle blocker and right side hitter Ashley Mariani. In the class of 2013, Mariani was ranked as the 31st-best player, Lea was named the 37th-best player, and Hembry was recognized as the nation’s 45th-best player.  Additionally, Bridgette Villano was an AVCA Under Armour All-American Honorable Mention and earned Mizuno/Volleyball Magazine third team AllAmerican honors. She was also listed as one of PrepVolleyball.com’s top 250 recruits in the class of 2013.

MULLINS’ SUMMER ON USA A2 TEAM  Senior captain Ellen Mullins was one of just seven defensive specialists in the 2013 U.S. Women’s National Volleyball A2 Program this past summer.  Open to college athletes with eligibility remaining for the 2013 campaign, the WNTA2 program was whittled down from a record 240 tryout participants in February to just 47 in June.  Mullins competed on Team Blue and placed fourth at the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.  Tennessee and Lady Vol volleyball graduate Leslie Cikra was hand-selected by head coach Karch Kiraly for a second tryout with the Red, White and Blue. Cikra was part of the A2 Training Team in 2011 as well.

AVCA ACADEMIC ACCOLADES  For the third-straight year, the UT volleyball team was recognized with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, which recognizes teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA.  Tennessee recorded its sixth consecutive semester with at least a 3.30 overall team GPA this past spring, finishing the 2012-13 academic year with a department-best 3.58 GPA.  UT’s volleyball program has recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for 11 consecutive semesters, which totals to the last five and a half years.  For the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years, the Big Orange was the only team in the SEC to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award.

 Former Lady Vols Jasmine Brown and Kayla Jeter were among those honored with Academic Excellence Awards during the annual 1A FAR meeting in Dallas, Texas, Sept. 23-24.  Academic Excellence Award recipients must have graduated during the past academic year (2012-13)

Freshmen with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.80, and must have participated in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at an FBS institution in a sport sponsored by an FBS conference.  Tennessee has now produced 16 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award recipients in the past three years.

FORMER LADY VOLS ON PRO CIRCUIT  A trio of former Lady Vols consisting of DeeDee Harrison, Kayla Jeter and Leslie Cikra are continuing their volleyball careers professionally overseas.  Jeter is a member of LP Kangasala in Finland, while Cikra joined Ouest Provence Volley in France. Harrison completed her rookie season with Chamalieres Volleyball Club in France right after the 2012 Tennessee season ended.

HEAD COACH ROB PATRICK  Rob Patrick, now entering his 17th season as head coach, has made nine NCAA appearances with the Lady Vols, including the current stretch of fivestraight which is a program-best.  Since taking over the program in 1997, Patrick has become the program’s all-time wins leader. He earned his 350th career win against Coastal Carolina in the closing match of the Tennessee Invitational on Sept. 21.  While at the helm of the Orange & White, Patrick has averaged over 20 wins a season, and has had players earn 40 All-SEC honors and 24 All-South Region accolades.  The native of Cleveland, Ohio has twice earned National Coach of the Year honors and guided the Lady Vols to the 2005 NCAA Final Four.  Of Tennessee’s 17 All-Americans, Patrick has coached 15, including senior libero and captain Ellen Mullins.

 Tennessee returns its starting libero and AllAmerican Ellen Mullins. Shealyn Kolosky and Nikki Brice. In addition, the Lady Vols also welcome back senior Whitney Heeres, who was sidelined with an injury last season, as well sophomores Megan Hatcher and Ashlyn Sunseri.  Mullins set the tone for the Big Orange last season, earning AVCA Honorable Mention All-American honors. The 5-foot-6 libero was also named to the AVCA All-South Region team. She started all 30 matches, and was one of just two players to play in all 119 sets. The Nashville product earned a leaguebest three SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2012, and led the team with career-best marks in digs (541) and digs per set (4.55) - marks that ranked second and fourth in the league, respectively.  After being injured in last season’s preseason, Kolosky returns to the squad in 2013. The 6-foot3 middle blocker was one of just four Lady Vols to start every match during her freshman campaign in 2011, playing in 122 sets, and was a key component in UT’s SEC title. The Wheaton, Ill., native appeared in 10 matches in 2012.  Heeres returns to the court for her senior season after suffering from a shoulder injury that sidelined her in 2012.

squad with 1,167 assists for an average of 8.91 helpers per set in 2012.  Tennessee native Kalyn Helton dons the Orange & White this season after playing at Lee University last year, helping guide the Flames to a 30-11 record and a 13-1 mark in conference play. She spent her freshman year at Harding University where she was named Conference Freshman of the Year.  After spending the 2012 season at the University of Portland, sophomore Lexi Dempsey joins the squad. She appeared in all 30 matches for the Pilots last season, and ranked second on the team with 403 assists for an average of 3.66 helpers per set.  Freshman Jamie Lea joined Tennessee in the spring of 2013. She was ranked as the 37th-best player in the class of 2013 by PrepVolleyball.com and named to Volleyball Magazine’s Girls’ Fab 50 list, which recognizes the top 50 seniors in the nation. She was a four-time 3A All-Conference honoree at Orange High School in Efland, N.C., and named Player of the Year. She finished her career with 1,142 kills, a .371 attacking percentage and 126 blocks.   Arizona native Abby Brewer was a three-year letterwinner and setter at Chaparral High School where she earned all-state and all-city honors as a senior. The youngest of five siblings, Brewer will complete a family tradition as she makes her collegiate playing debut this weekend as all of her older siblings have played at the Division I level or above.   Listed as one of PrepVolleyball.com’s top 250 recruits in the class of 2013, Bridgette Villano hails from Davie, Fla., where she was a four-year letterwinner at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The defensive specialist earned AVCA Under Armour All-American Honorable Mention and Mizuno/Volleyball Magazine third team AllAmerican accolades. She is a two-time PrepVolleyball. com Defensive Dandies honoree.  Raina Hembry helped guide Central Catholic High School to its third-straight Oregon 6A state title as a senior in 2012-13. She was ranked as the 45th-best player in the class of 2013 by PrepVolleyball.com.  Texas product Ashley Mariani was a member of the USA Junior National Team and ranked as the 31st-best player in the class of 2013 by PrepVolleyball.com. As a junior, the 6-foot-1 middle blocker garnered District 4-5A Middle Blocker of the Year honors.

2013 SEASON HONORS

 After adding assistant coaches Alan Edwards and Rachel Cooper and director of operations Jenna Dover two seasons ago, there was only one addition to the Lady Vol Volleyball coaching staff in 2013. Charlie Olson joined the program this past summer and will serve as the team’s volunteer assistant coach, replacing Russ Friedland who landed a full time assistant position at UNLV. Olson has been in the juniors and high school coaching ranks since 2005, where he recently helped lead the Floyd E. Kellam Knights to a third-straight AAA Virginia High School state title as co-head coach. He was named “Virginia State AAA Coach of the Year” in 2012. Olson graduated from California State University, Chico, in 2004 where he played volleyball on the men’s club team and served as floor captain during his last two seasons.  On the court, the Lady Vols welcome nine newcomers, including five freshmen and four transfers.  Carly Wishlow, a junior transfer from UTSA, joins the Orange & White after helping lead the Roadrunners to the Southland Conference Tournament championship match and Western Athletic Conference Tournament in her two seasons.  Brooke Speyerer is one of three setters on the 2013 team, transferring from Pace University after spending her freshman and sophomore campaigns with the Setters.
