When the annual NCAA bracket was announced, Tennessee, fresh off a thrilling SEC Tournament title run, was surprised to earn a lower-thanexpected No. 14-seed in the field of 64. UT’s reward was perhaps the toughest regional in the country as three of the top 18 teams in the RPI would battle it out in Knoxville. In the opener against Liberty, Ivy Renfroe was dominant in the circle, firing her third career nohitter to back a Lady Vol offense that scored eight two-out runs in an 8-0 (5 inn.) victory. Freshman Madison Shipman ended a seven-run, seventh inning outburst with a walk-off grand slam. Despite out-hitting Oklahoma State, 9-8, UT dropped into the losers bracket by suffering a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Cowgirls. With Tennessee forced to play again on May 21 in an attempt to avoid elimination, sophomore Lauren Gibson blasted a pair of homers to back another Ivy Renfroe masterpiece (two-hitter) as the Big Orange cruised past No. 19 Georgia Tech, 7-0. On championship Sunday UT knew it would have to defeat OSU twice to advance to NCAA Super Regionals. The Lady Vols rallied from deficits on a pair of occasions, even grabbing a 4-3 lead in the fifth, before the Cowgirls erupted for three tallies in the sixth. Down to its last chance, Tennessee managed to plate a run in the top of the seventh via a sacrifice fly. With a runner at second and two down, Gibson ripped a single to left. Unfortunately for the Big Orange, Kelly Grieve was thrown out at the plate to end the season. 108
