Tennessee improved to a staggering 4-0 all-time in WCWS opening games with a 9-0 (5 inn.) rout of #3 Arizona to advance on into the winner’s bracket. The nine runs marked the most scored by the Lady Vols in a WCWS contest and the victory continued UT’s perfect run through the NCAA Tournament to that point, improving to 6-0. Freshman pitcher Ivy Renfroe limited the dangerous Wildcats to just three hits in a complete game to move to 30-4 on

the season and become the only Lady Vol pitcher not named Monica Abbott to win 30 games in a season and post a victory at the WCWS. Senior first baseman Erinn Webb and sophomore third baseman Jessica Spigner each knocked in two runs to lead the offense. UA hurler Kenzie Fowler helped UT’s cause by being called for numerous illegal pitches from the circle, including one that plated Tennessee’s first run in the third.

Freshman pitcher Ivy Renfroe chats postgame with ESPN reporter Holly Rowe after firing a threehit shutout versus #3 Arizona. The 9-0 (5 inn.) victory marked the Jackson, Tenn., native’s first career appearance at the WCWS.

Georgia rallied late, cutting its deficit to 7-5 and bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh inning. A Renfroe K and a stellar play on a bouncer to third by Jessica Spigner ended the drama as UT prevailed.
