PRESEASON NOTEBOOK

- After 27 years as an assistant to Pat Summitt at Tennessee, former Lady Vol player (1976-80) Holly Warlick embarks on her first season as a head coach. - In an April 18, 2012, press conference on the ThompsonBoling Arena floor that is named in her honor, Summitt announced she was stepping away from the head coaching position after 38 years at the helm. UT Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Dave Hart then announced Warlick as Summitt’s successor. - Summitt hung her coach’s whistle around Warlick’s neck, symbolically handing over the reins to her former player, loyal assistant coach and long-time friend. - Warlick served has associate head coach from 2005-12 and was an assistant coach for Summitt from 1985-2005. - After Summitt announced her diagnosis of early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type, on Aug. 23, 2011, Warlick took on greater responsibility and oversaw daily supervision of the basketball office during the 2011-12 season. - She also handled a large measure of the media obligations during the season.

- In addition to Warlick filling the head coaching position and Summitt working in the role of head coach emeritus, there are other changes to the staff. - Former Lady Vol player (1996-2001) Kyra Elzy returned to UT as an assistant coach after spending the past four seasons coaching at Kentucky and serving as recruiting coordinator. - Former Iowa standout and Harlem Globetrotter Jolette Law is UT’s second new assistant coach. Known as a key contributor to Rutgers’ success during her 12 seasons there, Law most recently served as head coach at Illinois from 2007-12. - Elzy and Law fill the spots previously occupied by Warlick and Mickie DeMoss, who left after last season to take an assistant coaching job with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. - Veteran assistant Dean Lockwood is back for his ninth year with the Lady Volunteers.

RECORDS

A NEW ERA

5

GENERAL PRESEASON NOTEBOOK (CONTINUED)

TRADITION LIVES

TOP RETURNEES

- Warlick, who arrived at UT in 1976 as a walk-on track & field athlete, later earned a basketball scholarship and became a three-time All-American on the hardwood, used a well-known track & field prop to demonstrate to her team what the expectations are and what needs to be done in this time of transition. - During a team meeting in August, Warlick passed around a white baton with inscriptions providing a simplified explanation of what is occuring, emphasizing that the program’s values remain the same and encouraging everyone to hit the ground running. - “TENNESSEE LADY VOLS Tradition...All we are doing is passing the baton.” - “NEW TEAM, NEW STAFF, NEW GOALS...SAME HEART, SAME PRIDE, SAME FIGHT.” - “TAKE THE BATON AND LET’S GO!!”

- Sophomore Ariel Massengale, junior Meighan Simmons and seniors Taber Spani and Kamiko Williams possess considerable experience for Tennessee. - Massengale was UT’s starting point guard in 24 games a year ago, while Simmons got the nod 22 times and Spani was on the floor for tipoff on 15 occasions despite dealing with a nagging knee injury. - Sophomores Cierra Burdick and Isabelle Harrison didn’t have the accolades their classmate Massengale did in 2011-12, but their experience should have them prepared to play more considerable roles in 2012-13.

TAKE THE BATON AND LET’S GO!!

A LOOK AT 2011-12 SEC TOURNEY CHAMPS, ELITE EIGHT

- Tennessee produced a 27-9 overall record a year ago and finished second in the SEC with 12-4 league mark. - The Lady Vols won their third-straight and 16th overall SEC Postseason Tournament title. - UT advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament, where the squad was eliminated by eventual national champion Baylor, 77-58.

2012 SENIOR CLASS ALL FIVE STARTERS DEPART

- The five seniors started the final eight games of the season for Tennessee in 2011-12. - Briana Bass, Vicki Baugh, Glory Johnson, Alicia Manning and Shekinna Stricklen got the nod on Senior Day vs. Florida on Feb. 26 and proceeded to start all three SEC Tournament games and four NCAA Tournament contests. - Stricklen (2nd, Seattle) and Johnson (4th, Tulsa) were WNBA first round draft picks, while Baugh went in the third round to Tulsa.

YOUNG IN 2012-13

ONLY THREE UPPERCLASS PERFORMERS

- Tennessee has only two seniors this season, including 6-1 guard/forward Taber Spani and 5-11 guard Kamiko Williams. Both missed time with injuries last season. - The junior class consists of Meighan Simmons, a 5-9 guard who started 22 games last season and played in all 36. - There are three sophomore returnees, including 6-2 forward Cierra Burdick, 6-3 center Isabelle Harrison and 5-6 point guard Ariel Massengale. - Burdick played in all 36 games as a rookie and got three starts, Massengale played in 33 contests and started 24, while Harrison had 31 appearances without a start. - Tennessee also welcomes 5-10 sophomore Jasmine Phillips and freshmen Andraya Carter (5-9, point guard), Bashaara Graves (6-2 forward/center), Jasmine Jones (6-2 forward) and Nia Moore (6-3 center). 6

EXPERIENCED PLAYERS RETURN

SPEEDY SIMMONS UT’S MOST DECORATED RETURNEE

- Meighan Simmons is UT’s top returning scorer and was the No. 3 producer of points for last year’s team at 11.1 per game. - Simmons improved that average to 15.0 points per contest in the NCAA Tournament, tallying 20 vs. UT Martin and 22 vs. Kansas. - She nailed 51 of 164 three-point attempts last season to finish as UT’s second-best long-distance shooter. - Simmons scored in double figures on 21 occasions, including three out of four NCAA Tournament games, and ended her sophomore season with 48 career doubledigit scoring outputs at UT. - Simmons was an AP All-America honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2010-11 as well as an AP & Coaches All-SEC Second Team choice. - She also earned SEC Freshman of the Year kudos from the coaches and AP SEC Newcomer of the Year in 2011.

MORE MASSENGALE ON POINT AS A FRESHMAN

- A year ago, Ariel Massengale was named to the FullCourt.com Freshman All-America First Team and SEC All-Freshman Team. - Massengale appeared in 33 games, getting 24 starts and scoring in double figures on 10 occasions. - She started in the opener vs. Pepperdine (11/13), becoming only the 14th freshman to start her first game as a Lady Vol after being anointed UT’s point guard in March 2011 by Pat Summitt while she was still in high school. - Recorded 162 assists as a rookie, the most-ever by a UT freshman and the eighth-best total in school history. - Ranked second in the SEC with that total, as well, with an average of 4.9 per game. - Led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.1. - Fourth best free throw shooter in the SEC at .776 (6685).

SPANI FOR THREE

ON A ROLL BEFORE INJURIES IN 2011-12

- Taber Spani played in 27 games, starting 15 for Tennessee last season while battling injuries. - She had six double-figure scoring outputs in the first nine games of the season before a balky knee limited her playing time and productivity.

HISTORY

NEWCOMERS

- Tennessee traditionally has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation. - Holly Warlick seems to be subscribing to the same philosophy in regard to scheduling. - The Lady Vols play defending NCAA champ Baylor in Waco as part of a road trip to Texas and Baylor on Dec. 16 and 18. - UT welcomes 2012 NCAA Final Four squads Stanford and Notre Dame to Knoxville on Dec. 22 and Jan. 28, respectively. - UT also welcomes perennial powers North Carolina (Dec. 2) and Rutgers (Dec. 30) to Thompson-Boling Arena as well as a Middle Tennessee squad that resides in most preseason top 25 polls. - To add to the difficulty for a young squad, Tennessee opens with two on the road, facing Chattanooga on Nov. 9 and Georgia Tech on Nov. 11. The latter was an NCAA Sweet 16 team in 2012. - A date at Miami on Nov. 18 makes it three of the first four on the road for Tennessee. - Add to that an SEC slate that includes eight teams that went to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

REVIEW

- Seniors Taber Spani and Kamiko Williams already have earned their degrees. - Spani completed her degree in communication studies in August and now is pursuing a master’s in kinesiology with a concentration in sports psychology and motor behavior. - Williams earned a degree in sociology/criminal justice in spring 2012 and is working on a second undergraduate degree in psychology. - Both kept UT’s 100-percent graduation rate perfect. - Assistant coach Kyra Elzy was the first Lady Vol player (1996-2001) to complete her bachelor’s degree early and earn a master’s degree as a player.
