President’s Message Jonathan Davis - USPTA Southwest President
Dear Southwest Pros, I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and is ready for the fall weather. It is hard to believe that we are already on the back half of 2019. As we look towards the end of the year remember that 2019 marks the end of the three year continuing education cycle for the majority of our membership. Right now roughly 15% of our Southwest members need to complete their continuing education before December 31st.

Andrea is from Clarkdale Arizona and is the girl’s tennis coach for Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, Arizona. Her passion for tennis and kind personality are apparent the first minute you meet her. Andrea has already slid into her role seamlessly and is doing a fantastic job. We are very lucky to have her in Northern Arizona! I wish everyone has a safe and healthy transition to the fall season. Thank you all for everything you do to have a positive impact on the USPTA.
If you are unsure how many continuing education credits you have earned you can check on your Educational Report Card on the USPTA website. To access your report card, login to www.uspta.com and go to your account page. The report card is listed under your “member documents” tab. Please make sure you complete your continuing education before the end of the year to prevent your membership from becoming inactive in 2020. We all know how popular and fast growing pickleball has become. Having a certification in pickleball instruction is now more valuable than ever. What you might not know is that the USPTA has a partnership with the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA). The IPTPA is the leader in developing the teaching standards in pickleball and they offer multiple levels of certification. On October 20th we are having a special USPTA only certification with the IPTPA at the Arizona Country Club in Phoenix. Their workshop and certification course will prepare you to teach pickleball and expand your clientele base. There is a flyer with more details in this newsletter if you are interested in signing up for

Badger/Johnson Win Awards Congratulations go out to USPTA Southwest Pros Amy Badger and Dick Johnson, both from Albuquerque,New Mexico. Amy is USPTA Southwest Board Secretary and Dick is the USPTA Southwest Northern New Mexico District Coordinator and also tester for that district. Amy received two awards from the New Mexico High School Coaches Association (NMHSCA); the first was the 2019 “Team of The Year” for her Albuquerque Academy High School Team where she has served as varsity girls tennis coach for the last 20 years and second for being named the NMHSCA 2019 “Coach of The Year”! Amy was also named the USPTA Southwest High School Coach of The Year in 2006, 2014, and 2016! Amy serves as a coach for the Southwest’s EDC camps for 10 and under. She also serves on the USTA Southwest Coaches Commission and is the USTASW EDC Futures Lead Faculty for New Mexico and El Paso. Amy also participated in a 4.5 league team in 2017 that finished 3rd at Nationals. For many years now Amy has volunteered her time for the Coleman Vision Women’s Pro Circuit event and local USTASW district programming. Amy is one of the hardest working pros you will ever meet and is certainly deserving of both of these awards. Way to go Amy, keep up the good work. She has one daughter Ava, now 16, who keeps life busy, fun and in perspective. Dick Johnson has been an Elite USPTA Tennis Pro for 42 years and past president of the Southwest USPTA. He currently is a Southwest Tester for the USPTA and is the SWPTA District Coordinator for Northern New Mexico. He is also a three time past President of the USTASW Northern New Mexico district. Johnson was recently awarded the 2019 National High School Coach of The Year. Dick has been the Southwest USPTA High School Coach of The Year on five occasions and SWPTA Pro of The Year twice. In 2016 the USPTA named him National High School Coach of the Year and in 2017 the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame named him High School Coach of the Year. The USTA Southwest honored Johnson in 2008 by inducting him into the Southwest Hall of Fame. DJ has been the boy’s coach at La Cueva High School for 23 years besides being the girl’s coach for six years. His lifetime record is 378-55 with nine state championships. He has lead the La Cueva Jr Tennis Camps over the past 20 years which has involved over 2000 kids getting instruction.

He has been a guest speaker at over 15 USTA, USPTA, NMHSCA, and other groups in recent years. Johnson has been married 46 years to his wife Marcie, a retired mid-school principal. They enjoy traveling and being with their pups Gizmo and Lulu. page 4

* The most recent full certification dates in the USPTA Southwest were held in June at the Tanoan Country Club in Albuquerque, New Mexico and at the Tucson Country Club in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Gregory Prudhomme, Larry Lineberry, and Dick Johnson conducted the testing experience for the seven new USPTA applicants in Albuquerque while Bryan Dirks conducted the event in Tucson with four applicants.

s you all might already know, along with the official accreditation and endorsement granted to the USPTA by the USTA there will be changes to the certification process for becoming a USPTA professional. The complete details of the changes are not yet finalized, but they will significantly increase the credibility and value of being a certified USPTA professional around the world. The exact start date has not been announced but it is expected that the changes might be pushed back to 2021 from the original forecasted date of 2020. Member professionals that are already certified before the changes take place will be grandfathered in and will not have to recertify. For those of you that would like to upgrade, the remainder of 2019 and during 2020 would be a good time to do so. Further, now is a good time to encourage other prospective USPTA pros to become certified.

Southeastern Arizona by Bryan Dirk
What a great summer! At least in Tucson, I believe there is a correlation between the mild temperatures and our increased Jr. Camp participation. We’ve had a fantastic summer not only with our Tennis Camps but also our All Sports Camp, which includes tennis, golf, and swim. We hope to continue the momentum going into the fall season. Tucson Country Club will be hosting the USTA Southwest Hard Court Championships November 7-11. Details can be found through the USTA website and Tennis Link. Britt Feldhausen reports that TCTP continues to work through the logistics of teaming up with the Jewish Community Center. It all looks very promising as the schools that fit the profile for TCTP are already in the J’s operating area. We are hoping to have everything in place by fall season. Chuck Reisig is working with our staff to make sure we have a good opening. Rita Bermudez started her fall season Queen of the Court at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club! It is an 8-week doubles league for women and began on August 27th. You get to play one set of doubles with each Queen on your court and at the end of the day, the winner moves up a court for the next week. Queen is a great way to work on your doubles game while socializing with the wonderful women of TRC. At the end of the session we will have a big brunch together with prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall winners! We have also added a Miss Congeniality Award! The Queen with the friendliest poise and spirit out there will get a fun surprise!

Hello Southwest USPTA Pros! I hope you are all getting through the heat of the summer as well as possible! I am looking forward to fall coming around the corner as well as the 2019 USPTA World Conference in Las Vegas later this month. Throughout the years attending the USPTA World Conference I have learned an immense amount of information about the tennis industry, I have made great friends, and I have accumulated many fond memories. In fact, it was at one of the World Conferences in the 1990s where my passion for Sport and Performance Psychology was developed from attending sessions by Dr. Jack Groppel and Dr. Jim Loehr on the topic of human performance. Since then, I have pursued that passion in and out of USPTA divisional and national conferences and I am now proud (and relieved :)) to announce that I have completed my Doctorate in General Psychology with an Emphasis in Performance Psychology this summer. Without the influence of the USPTA and the emphasis on continuing education I do not know if I would have attempted this degree. A key aspect for human fulfillment and motivation is to continue to improve and learn throughout life. I hope to see many of you at the USPTA World Conference nurturing your continued education and bettering yourselves in the tennis industry and as individuals.
USPTA Pro Captain Class Forgive me for the self-regarding and personal acknowledgement, but I would like to recognize USPTA pro, Mandy Prudhomme, for her captain class example, especially in light of my recent PhD graduation. Countless people commented on the effort I was making to pursue a PhD while coaching two college teams, teaching at the Paseo Racquet Center, and raising three children among my other various committee involvement. While I am proud of that effort, it

would not have been possible without the support and hard work of my better half. Not only did Mandy take the brunt of this challenge for those four years by keeping up the household, the yard, and our children, but she also taught many more hours on the tennis court (6 days a week was the norm), including teaching some of my clients that I could no longer fit into the schedule. Additionally, while I was writing the dissertation Mandy endured two separate foot surgeries and was on the court teaching only days later on one foot using a scooter or a crutch in order to prevent her students from waiting weeks before getting back on the court. During this time, Mandy continued her USPTA education by attending 2 world-conferences and 3 divisional conferences. Like myself, Mandy grew up around USPTA pros and owes much of her lasting passion for tennis to the wonderful role models that she has met in this great organization. Thank you, Mandy, for setting such a great example with your hard work, commitment to tennis, and being the ultimate team player!
Upcoming Events * We are attempting to host a Phoenix Area Pros meeting this fall at the newly-renovated Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, AZ, which is the first tennis complex in Arizona to feature PlaySight. Their PlaySight system has two high-definition cameras on every court that allows for live viewing as well as recording of matches and practice sessions that can be used for video analysis. When the details are finalized the date and time will be sent out. * Come out to watch local Fall Division I College Tennis Tournaments: o The Grand Canyon University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams will be hosting a tournament at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Arizona on November 1st through 3rd. o The ASU Women’s Tennis Team will be hosting a tournament at ASU on November 8th through 10th. * USPTA pro, Brian Edwards, will be hosting both Grand Canyon University Tennis Teams on October

Other News * USPTA pro, Jerry Keever, was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame at Phoenix Country Day School for his exceptional career as the tennis coach for their programs. Coach Keever has led the PCDS tennis program since 1994, and during his tenure, has garnered almost 700 wins, 29 Region Championships, eight State Champion Runner-ups and seven State Championships along with four coach of the year awards. He has also coached 15 girls’ singles and doubles state champions as well as six boy’s singles and doubles champions. Some of Coach Keever’s players have continued playing college at the NCAA level, and he has impacted multiple students on and off the court. Congrats, Jerry! * USPTA pro, Tom Breece, and his wife, Gail, conducted their 33rd summer camp in a row at the Poconos Lake Preserve in Pennsylvania. Over 60 players attended the camp. Phoenix USPTA pros, Dr. Gregory Prudhomme, Mandy Prudhomme, and former Phoenix USPTA pro, Rob Horsch, assisted at the camp as guest pros. Northern Arizona by Andrea Meyer
Master Professional and new USPTA tester, Larry Lineberry, was part of a two day USPTA certification test in Albuquerque June 7-8. Seven new applicants spent two days working with USPTA testers Dr. Greg Prudhomme, Dick Johnson and Larry hoping to be certified. Larry conducted his own certification test August 24th in Cottonwood, AZ for several new applicants. He is finding the process of certifying new applicants very rewarding at this stage in his career. Larry will be directing a major USTA sanctioned tournament for juniors and adults in the Verde Valley October 11-13 in which all proceeds will benefit junior tennis development in Northern Arizona. He is donating his tournament directing fee to the Event. He traveled to Maine again for 10 days in August to continue his work with a junior whose family resides part time there and in Sedona. Larry’s second granddaughter, Eleanor Elizabeth, was born April 10th to son Alexander and his wife Zoe. Larry’s son, USAF Captain Alexander Lineberry, leaves for his second deployment as a USAF special operator to Somalia in the fall. Alex was a top ranked tennis player in the Southwest as a junior and played four years at the US Air Force Academy. REMINDER: Less than 1% of all Americans are currently serving our country in the armed forces. During the Wimbledon Championships, USPTA Elite Professional, Claudette Laliberte held a “Whites and Woods” round robin event at the Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona. It was a lot of fun seeing everyone in all white attire and using wood rackets! USPTA Profes-

sional, Andrea Meyer, also participated and even made some sweet biscuits with fresh cream and strawberries for everyone! Pimms cocktails was the beverage of the evening! In August, Claudette hosted an annual round robin event at Enchantment Resort. Players from Anthem got together with Sedona for some fun competition, followed by lunch at the Resort. In October, Enchantment will be hosting another Nike Adult Tennis Camp where Claudette will be providing instruction to the group of players. Summer Sizzler Round Robins at Poco Diablo Resort have been well attended, and will continue into the fall. Congratulations to USPTA Professional, Andrea Meyer who has now take over the SWPTA District Coordinator position for Northern Arizona. Verde Valley USPTA Professional, Andrea Meyer is excited about the progress of her orange ball group of juniors playing on the Mingus Union High School courts in Cottonwood. She attributes the increased numbers of middle school and upper-elementary players this summer to the advent of Tennis in the Schools, funded by Northern AZ USTA and SWUSTA. “We now have tennis instruction offered in PE classes at ClarkdaleJerome, Dr. Daniel Bright School, and Cottonwood Community School. And word of mouth is starting to spread that kids love tennis and are having both exciting challenges and making new friends on the tennis court,” said Meyer. “A big thrill this summer was seeing one of my nine year-olds really move and react like an athlete. Joelle had resisted playing any sport before. Now, her mom tells me that Joelle begs to play and was grieved when the summer session ended. “Meyer is looking forward to Joelle and others in her group entering their first tournament, the Oxendale Autogroup Tournament in Cottonwood and Sedona, Oct 11-13. This fall, Meyer plans to continue and expand tennis programming in local schools. Meyer, who coaches the girls’team at Mingus Union

High School, also helped Prescott HS coach and USPTA pro Sterling Fetty coach his three JTT teams Aug. 2-3 in Flagstaff at the SW JTT Sectional. She explained, “I helped most with the 14U’s . “Getting to know players from opposing schools like Prescott and Flagstaff helps spread goodwill. In the spring I’ll be rooting hardest for my Mingus kids as the high school season starts, so having the chance to promote tennis and sportsmanship among a wider group of kids expands my own heart and my own skills. “The 14U Advantage Tennis Academy players “showed tremendous personal growth on court, “Meyer said. “Holding your composure while the crowd seems against you and playing with heart are characteristics that we adults are not always able to manifest, yet these 13 -year-olds played like lions.” Sterling Fetty reports that Northern Arizona had a great turnout of over 30 players signing up for their local Junior Team Tennis advancing league over the summer. Three teams have qualified for the sectionals tournament being held at NAU. They have one 14 and under team and two 18 and under teams competing. Hopefully, one of these teams will qualify for Nationals in November. There was also a junior one day tournament held August 17th at Yavapai College, each match consisted of one set. There was a good turnout from Northern Arizona.

Dick Johnson I am looking forward to the 2019 USPTA World Conference on September 22-26th. I hope many of you in our district can go because it is so rewarding and the fellowship, bonding, and networking is entirely worthwhile. It has been a wild year for me thus far, my chemo treatment ended 3 months ago, and

I had a cat scan on August 12th, which came back clear. My wife, Marcie has been my backbone all along with my high school tennis team. To say that our end of the season banquet was a “Team-Fest” is an understatement. We won our 4th state championship in five years (15 of the last 20). These kids kept me going all season. I thank everyone for all your calls and support. Excited to tell you that in June we tested seven more USPTA candidates in northern New Mexico USPTA. I want to thank Greg Prudhomme and Larry Lineberry who carried the load for me in June. It was a complete surprise a few weeks ago when our own New Mexico High School Coaches Association Director, Buster Mabry, called and told me that I was named the 2019 National High School Coaches Association, Coach of The Year. I was thrilled and honored to be the tennis coach at La Cueva High School. Have a great fall everybody and I hope to see you soon.
Amy Badger I went for Day 1 of testing to lend support to several candidates that I sponsored and to our ever capable testers Greg Prudhomme, Larry Lineberry, and Dick Johnson. Just returned from coaching from 12 zonals in Tucson with our top southwest boys and girls. They had a very tough schedule against two SoCal teams, two NorCal teams, ending with a playoff against PNW. Parents and players all agreed that they’d rather play against the toughest teams. It was over 100 degrees each day and the kids were fantastic! Will be lead faculty for our fall orange ball EDC camps in Albuquerque. This is a wonderful new initiative to bring these types of player development camps closer to home. One will be held each month in October, November and December. This camp series is no longer selection based, so any child, with experience is able to apply! Looking forward to beginning another mid-school season in a couple of weeks at the Albuquerque Academy. graders to take to the courts with our no cut program. Very honored to have recently received the NMHSCA, Team of the Year and the Coach of the Year at the NMHSCA Annual Convention. It’s always a wonderful experience getting together with colleagues around the state.
Doug MacCurdy Hitting the road from September through November. I’m looking forward to checking in with numerous players and coaches at the US Open in New York. I will be traveling to Israel to do an evaluation of the player development system for the Israel Tennis Association. This is an exciting project given historical significance of the country and a great tradition in tennis. From Israel I will be returning to Turkey for training of national coaches and tutors of the national association’s coach education program. It will be a real homecoming since I spent 18 months in Turkey from 2014-2016. In November I will be heading to Japan to do a twoweek coach education tour in five cities. This is organized by the state of the art Total Tennis Training Center in Kashiwa, Japan. I look forward to making it back home for Thanksgiving.
Ralph Bolton The Ancient City Adult Open had over 100 participants this year at beautiful Santa Fe Tennis and Swim Club. Jim Parker, Santa Fe Tennis and Swim Club Pro Emeritus and USPTA Master Professional, heads to Croatia in September, to Captain the United States Team in The World Championship. He is also playing in The World Individuals. Summer Tennis camps are coming to a close to soon be replaced by after school programs as well as middle school practices for Santa Fe Prep. they look to defend their championship title. The pickleball courts are getting busier and that should continue as the weather cools off a little more.

Kurt Edelbrock Wow, it’s tough to squeeze a whole tennis season into six months! Ten weeks of high school tennis started in March and finished in May. Each week in June offered six drop-in play opportunities and five teaching adult clinics. A special clinic run by John Fielding from Elevated Tennis in Colorado was held. The clinic included pickleball on the six pickleball courts. July started with a bang with one of the largest adult tennis tournaments in New Mexico. The sanctioned NTRP tournament included 175 players from five states. Even with major Saturday rain delays, the main draws were completed on Sunday. There was a wet and wild party on Saturday night. The Angel Fire- Taos competition began the next week with ten doubles matches competing on July 13 in Angel Fire. Two weeks later, July 27, the rivalry continued in Taos with 36 players. Taos squeaked out a win both Saturdays. The club “World Team Tennis” style league starts in August. Forty players from Taos country club make up four teams competing in the World Team Tennis format for five weeks. A benefit tournament for Taos High School Tennis will be played September 14 and 15.The 42nd annual “Aqui in Taos” Championships will be held September 27-29 at Quail Ridge Taos. staff. The adult lesson program has expanded to three lesson times, and the youth program has seen a rejuvenation with the employment of three new teachers to continue providing instruction for all ages. Dave co-coached the Rio Rancho JTT 18-under intermediate team with players from three different school districts taking part. In September, he will help out with the NNM USTA’s Middle School league in Rio Rancho consisting of four Rio Rancho middle schools. In June, Dave and his wife Nancy greeted participants in the national Senior Olympics in Albuquerque as part of the Haverland-Carter booth at the Wellness portion of the registration area. He is hoping to again be part of an adult USTA tennis team.
Robert Soneru The assistant pro at Tanoan Country Club is offering green and orange Ball classes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays.
David Pitts The Director of Tennis at Tanoan just returned from his yearly trip to France for the month of August. For over 20 years, he has been a private lesson instructor. He was especially excited about this year’s New Mexico Adult Open. The numbers were up and Prize Money for the Open Division was $1000 thanks to Steve Lynch, the title sponsor.
Craig Bobo The Tennis Director at Highpoint has had a busy summer. He hosted the Memorial Day 40+ Sectionals with over 800 players coming from all over the southwest section. Highpoint also hosted the first annual New Mexico Adult L2 Championships June 14-16 and will be hosting the 18+ sectional championships August 9-11. Over the last 18 months Highpoint has resurfaced 12 of its 15 courts and added seating by the stadium courts. They have added two more JTT teams and adult teams to 31 for the year. His men’s 4.5 team went 12-0 in the spring and will be competing in Sectionals this weekend.
USTA News USTA Southwest Annual Meeting Weekend will be Nov. 16-17 in Tempe, AZ Our USTA Hall of Fame/Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, November 16 at Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix-Tempe ASU Research Park.
Juliana Guerin I just wanted to say that the certification and training was a wonderful event that I feel lucky to have experienced. It was inspiring and motivational to be surrounded with likeminded applicants and testers who are some of the most professional and successful people in the business. I took away invaluable information about professionalism and organization that is often not taught to prospective tennis professionals while learning how to teach the mechanics of tennis. It gave me a lot of motivation and encouragement to grow as a professional and continue on in the business. As of now I work as an assistant professional at the Tennis Club of Albuquerque and would like to start graduate school this fall while continuing to teach tennis.
