THE IMPORTANCE OF POWER IN TENNIS, AND HOW TO IMPROVE IT

Tennis is an ever-evolving sport, with its demands and standards continually rising. What is striking when watching top players in modern tennis, is the great physical shape they’re in. The impressive speed and heaviness of the shots produced by players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannick Sinner, and Aryana Sabalenka, are not just a result of great technique and timing, but their ability to generate power Multiple studies have underscored the role of power as a predictor of effective stroke production and on court performance in tennis (Fett et al , 2020; Turner et al , 2022 ) These findings emphasize the significance of power in determining a player's ability to execute explosive movements, generate hard and heavy shots, and maintain a competitive edge on the court. It is clear that power plays a crucial role in tennis performance, but how can you enhance your player’s power?

Before delving into strategies to enhance your player's power, let’s establish a clear definition of power itself Power is the capacity to apply force rapidly within a brief timeframe In simpler terms, it's about being able to generate maximum strength quickly (Grand Valley State University, 2019) A sprinter exploding off the starting blocks, accelerating to an extremely high speed within seconds, is a demonstration of power Power is crucial for activities that require quick bursts of energy, like sprinting, jumping, throwing, and hitting a powerful stroke in tennis.

There are many ways, and countless exercises that will improve your player’s power. The important thing when focusing on power is to use exercises that focus on rapid movements. When working on improved power, quality is over quantity The goal is not to make your player tired, but to perform a movement or exercise in an explosive manner where high quality is maintained throughout the set If your player can complete a set of 4 repetitions at 100% intensity, it will be more efficient for improving their power compared to a set of 30 repetitions at 60% intensity (Sarabia et al , 2017) In the latter case your player is no longer working on improving power, but rather on building endurance

Although endurance is also crucial in tennis, it's important to maintain a clear focus and purpose when addressing fitness aspects, avoiding the blending of different fitness components. So when working on power and explosiveness with your player, focus on lower repetitions and higher quality. There are many different exercises you can do with your players to enhance power Here are three exercises for tennis players to improve power and on court performance:

Medicine Ball Rotational Throws: Have your player stand perpendicular to a wall with their feet shoulderwidth apart, holding a medicine ball. Their torso rotates away from the wall and then explosively rotates back towards the wall, throwing the ball as hard as they can. They need to catch the ball on the rebound and repeat on both sides. To increase difficulty, use a heavier ball.

Plyometric Box Jumps: Have your player start in a squat position in front of a plyometric box or sturdy platform Have them explosively jump onto the box, and land softly in a squat position After this, have them step or jump back down, and immediately repeat To increase difficulty, use a higher plyometric box or platform

11

Lateral Bounds: Have your player stand on one leg, and then guide them to initiate an inward movement with the lead leg and arm, shifting weight to load the outside hip. Instruct them to explosively jump to the side. Upon landing softly on the opposite leg, emphasize the importance of maintaining good posture for two seconds Repeat on the other leg To increase difficulty, try it with a medicine ball or weight

Those are a few of many exercises that will improve your player’s ability to produce power In conclusion, power is the ability to rapidly apply force, and you can improve your player’s power by guiding them through explosive high qualitative movements and exercises. It’s one of the most important physical traits of a successful tennis player. Don't forget to have fun while doing it!

RACQUET X 2024: RACQUET X 2024: FIRST IMPRESSIONS FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Many of you probably saw the numerous promotional announcements for Racquet X, an ambitious venture by event planner Robyn Duda and an attempt to solidify unity among all the racquet sports. The event was strategically placed from March 23rd to the 26th, to fall within the dates of the Miami Open.

From the outset, Racquet X presented itself as an expo, a symposium and a confluence of the various racquet sports; all things for all people. As great as this sounds, it only partially achieved its lofty goal.

Let’s take a look at the positives. This was a fantastic example of the proliferation of pickleball and the more recent explosion of padel It was also heartening to see tables representing both the USPTA and the USTA I was particularly impressed by the presence of USPTA CEO Brian Dillman and Chief Development Officer Ramona Husaru Hopefully, they considered their attendance worthwhile Cardio guru, Michele Krause also appeared with her infectious presentation of tennis plus fitness plus fun The existence of full-size tennis, pickle ball and padel courts made the whole experience very vivid and lively

So where did Racquet X fall short? Well, some things mentioned above contributed to the event’s shortcoming. First of all, the early promotions for Racquet X promised coverage of Table Tennis, Badminton, Platform Tennis, Squash, Racquetball, Beach Tennis and even Spec Tennis. None of these were represented. While we, as USPTA members do not naturally focus on these sports, their exposure would have made the event a more interesting and rewarding one

Clearly, Pickleball and Padel were the shiny objects in the room That’s fine and it’s understandable in Miami, where Padel, in particular, has begun to skyrocket, as it has in certain parts of Europe and Latin America. In contrast, there are many locales in Florida where Padel courts (unlike Pickleball) are non-existent.

Perhaps my greatest personal disappointment was tennis coming in a distant third in coverage. Hopefully, this does not signal any setback for USTA’s goal of 35 million players by 2035.

So I’m giving Racquet X 2024 a passing grade in its first try The concept is great; give racquet sports one centralized event to showcase themselves and increase interest and participation I look forward to their next attempt and I’m hopeful that they will go out of their way to welcome a full array of racquet sports; and of course, more tennis

12

Like most of you, my first and main sport is tennis To become a complete director of ALL racquet sports, I’ve worked at gaining certification in coaching pickleball and most recently padel

I have always had a love for the game of padel since it was available to me in Brazil at the club where I grew up playing tennis. There are now many packed padel courts and multiple academies in my home country and everywhere I travel internationally. In fact, a lot of my tennis friends have migrated to padel; they love the exercise, camaraderie, long rallies, and fun

The Fastest Growing Sport in the World

One of the most notable aspects of padel is its rapid growth in popularity around the world. Originating in Mexico in the 1960’s, padel has since spread to over 110 countries with over 25 million players participating in the sport. There are over 40,000 padel courts globally. As the sport continues to grow, its demand is expected to increase, attracting more players in the United States and worldwide

Parallels with Tennis, Pickleball, and Other Racquet Sports

Padel shares many similarities with tennis, which has contributed to its widespread appeal. Both sports are played on a rectangular court, with the same scoring systems, and with similar strokes. However, padel courts are smaller than tennis courts, making it easier for beginners to pick up the game (comparable to pickleball) Padel also uses a racquet, which is thicker than a pickleball paddle, but it has holes instead of strings The balls are very similar to a regular tennis ball Additionally, padel incorporates elements of squash, platform tennis, and racquetball, such as the use of walls (glass walls for better visualization and enjoyment of the audience), a shorter court that encourages more net play, it is primary played in pairs (doubles format), going outside the court to save some balls, and an underhand serve that

13

must bounce first, these components add a unique dimension to gameplay These similarities to tennis and other racquet sports, coupled with the sport's accessibility, have played an important role in attracting new players of all ages and backgrounds to the sport that already includes professional, amateur, junior, and senior padel leagues and tournaments around the globe.

Certification

The USPTA has partnered with Marcos del Pilar and Padelmba USA to bring the best certification programs of padel to the United States These certifications serve several key purposes, including standardizing coaching practices, ensuring player safety, and promoting the sport's development. The certification training covers all the technical and tactical topics in addition to aspects such as rules and regulations, coaching techniques, facility management, and player development (that can also be applied for tennis, pickleball, and other racquet sports).

My experience with the certification process was very beneficial The course was easy to navigate and contained online modules that included lessons, videos, tests, and a final exam There was also an energetic weekend workshop at the USTA National Campus, where the participants and I could apply our knowledge, improve our game, ask questions, run drills, test our skills, meet wonderful like-minded peers, and have a lot of fun! By offering these courses, certifications, and workshops, the padel organization aims to enhance the quality of coaching and gameplay, ultimately contributing to the sport's global growth

Conclusion

I had the privilege to take the USPTA Padel certification and it was exceptional! The coaches were amazing communicators, the energy was contagious, and the partnership with Marcos Del Pilar (one of the top promoters of padel) and Padelmba USA brings us the best that padel has to offer. As the sport continues to grow, its demand is expected to increase, attracting more players and enthusiasts in America and worldwide With its exciting gameplay and inclusive nature, padel has the potential to become one of the most popular sports for years to come

My commitment to padel is very strong and I’m working on bringing the first padel courts to Northwest Florida. I highly recommend racquet professionals take this certification and get more familiar with padel since it is growing everywhere I honestly believe you will love playing and teaching padel if you give it a shot!

You can get more information about the certification here: https://pmba.link/usa
