Transfer Fees Effective July 1, 2014 Standard processing fee is $14.00 when transfer is received within 60 days of the date of sale of the animal to the new owner, and $17.00 when received after 60 days. $2.00 discounts from the standard fee will be applied to individual animal transfers processed via infoJersey.com and to group transfers submitted in batch electronic files: Excel spreadsheet, report downloaded from herd management software, or a field-delimited text file. Additional discounts may apply for herds enrolled in REAP, and for intraherd and intra-farm transfers. Hazel Quinn Horst, the second child for Aaron and Meagan Horst, Chambersburg, Pa., was born two weeks early, on April 13, 2021. She weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. and was 18 ¾ inches long. On the tinier size, this bundle of joy is the perfect size for big sister, Scarlet, 2, to cuddle. Eligibility Rules for 2021 All American Junior Show
The All American Junior Jersey Show is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, 2021, in Louisville, Ky. The eligibility and ownership rules were approved by the AJCA Board of Directors upon recommendation of the All American Planning Committees. Junior Jersey owners need to read these carefully and take appropriate action now to ensure that they are eligible to exhibit in the 2021 show. Rule 1, Exhibitors. Exhibitors must be no younger than nine (9) and no older than 20 years of age as of January 1, 2021. U.S. residents must be members (junior or lifetime) of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Rule 2, Entries. Animals are eligible when recorded by the American Jersey Cattle Association in the Herd Register or with Generation Count 4 or greater, or by Jersey Canada with registry status of 93.75% and greater. The exhibitor must be listed as Recorded Owner on the registration certificate, either
(1) as the sole owner or (2) by his/her name in joint ownership. If the joint ownership includes more than one person meeting the eligibility requirements of Rule 1 (above), one of them must be declared as the exhibitor during check-in. Animals must be registered and/or transferred to meet one of the above ownership requirements on or before August 1, 2021. The date of registration and/or transfer is the Date Recorded printed on the registration certificate. Rule 3, Participation. Entries must be shown by the exhibitor, except by prior written approval from NAILE. Alternate leadspersons must (1) be associated with the Herd Unit and also eligible to show by age (Rule 1, above), or (2) if not, be the same age or younger than the exhibitor of the animal being shown. Requests for alternate leadsperson must be submitted for approval by the NAILE dairy show superintendent on forms provided by the AJCA not later than 12:00 noon the day before the show. No more than two (2) animals may be shown by one exhibitor in any one class. The exhibitor must lead the first entry and the second entry must be led by an NAILE approved alternate leadsperson. Adults are not allowed to show in any case. Rule 4, Breeder Status. In order to qualify for Premier Breeder points and Best Bred and Owned awards, the exhibitor declared at check-in must have his/her name recorded as a Breeder on the animal’s registration certificate. World Dairy Expo 2021 to Remain in Madison
World Dairy Expo is pleased to announce the 2021 event will be held once again at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., from September 28 through October 2. The announcement comes after contingency plans and alternative venues were considered in the wake of the pandemic. JERSEY JOURNAL
Stand Up For Dairy In the past two months two important dairy-related bills have been reintroduced in Congress. The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2021 would allow for flavored and unflavored whole milk to be offered as an option in school nutrition programs. The DAIRY PRIDE Act would prohibit non-dairy products from being labeled with dairy terms such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Both bills can offer a boost to dairy and deserve the support of producers and the dairy industry. Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2021 H.R 1861 U.S. Representatives Antonio Delgado (D-N.Y.) and Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-PA) introduced legislation to expand school milk choices to include flavored and unflavored whole milk. Current regulations adopted in 2017 only allow for fat-free and low-fat (1%) milk. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans reiterated dairy’s role in providing critical nutrients. The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee reported that 79% of 9- to 13-yearolds do not meet the recommended intake for dairy. Data show that from 2014 to 2016 schools served 232 million fewer half pints of milk and milk was among the most discarded items in school waste studies. While announcing the bill Rep. Thompson cited a project conducted at a Pennsylvania school during the 2019-2020 school year. Working in conjunction with the Grassroots PA Dairy Project Advisory Committee, students were offered milk at all butterfat levels. Whole milk was preferred 3 to 1 over low-fat milk, milk sales grew by 65%, and the volume of discarded milk declined by 95%. Making whole milk available in schools provides the opportunity to bring a generation of youth back to consuming fluid milk. The DAIRY PRIDE Act H.R. 2828 and S. 1346 U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Jim Risch (R-ID) along with U.S. Representatives Peter Welch (D-VT) and
Mike Simpson (R-ID) reintroduced the DAIRY PRIDE simultaneously in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Data from the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans found that most Americans are not meeting the recommended intake for dairy. While consumers know that dairy products provide key nutrients, the labeling of plant-based alternatives using dairy terms conveys an equivalency that is not accurate. Plant-based alternative products contain a variety of ingredients that often are not equivalent to the nutrition content of dairy products. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations define dairy products as being from dairy animals. Though existing federal regulation on the issue is clear on this subject, the FDA has not enforced to ensure accurate labeling, and as a result the incorrect use of the terms “milk”, “yogurt” and “cheese” has increased rapidly. The DAIRY PRIDE Act would require FDA to issue guidance for nationwide enforcement of mislabeled imitation dairy products and to report to Congress two years after enactment. “Dairy farmers and processors work hard every day to ensure that milk and real dairy products meet the highest standards for quality and nutrition. Manufacturers and marketers of imitation products are fully aware of dairy’s excellent reputation and have been hijacking dairy terminology to their benefit. It’s past time for the FDA to abide by their own definitions and stop the mislabeling of products that do not originate from milk,” stated Erick Metzger, National All-Jersey Inc. General Manager. Anyone involved in the dairy industry can help to advance these bills through Congress by contacting their Senators and Representatives and encouraging them to become co-sponsors. Three Young Jersey Breeders to be Recognized
T
he Board of Directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) has named three recipients of the Young Jersey Breeder Award for 2021. They are Matthew and Lauren Evangelo, Kingsburg, Calif., Amy Maxwell, Donahue, Iowa, and Alana Peterson, Viroqua, Wis. The first Young Jersey Breeder Awards were presented in 1976. Since then, more than 280 producers have received this award, including this year’s recipients. The Young Jersey Breeder Award is presented to individuals or couples younger than the age of 40 on January 1 of the year nominated who merit recognition for their expertise in dairy farming, breeding Jersey cattle, participation in AJCA and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) programs, and leadership in Jersey and other dairy and agriculture organizations. The honorees will be recognized at the Young Jersey Breeders Banquet to be held in conjunction with the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings in Bettendorf, Iowa, on June 23, 2021.
Matthew and Lauren Evangelo Matthew and Lauren Evangelo partner with his mother, Teresa, in Bar E Dairy, a mixed herd of 600 Jersey and 400 Holstein cows. A mutual love of cattle brought Matt and Lauren together for the first time in 2004 at World Dairy Expo. He was competing with the dairy judging team for California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and she was attending with family and friends. The next year, their paths crossed again with a reversal of roles, with Lauren judging for Cal Poly. Fate brought them
together again when he returned to dairy with his family, and she moved to Hanford for an internship with Farm Credit West. They married in 2008 and purchased their first big ticket item as newlywed— Tiaro Nevada Jazzle—with Blake Renner as a heifer calf from the Spring Valley 7th Edition. She was named Honorable Mention Junior Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2009 and placed 8th in the five-year-old class at the show in 2012. She is appraised Excellent-93% and has been a cornerstone of the merchandising program at Bar E Dairy. Black and whites were the leading ladies in Matt’s life initially. He grew up on D & E Dairy, a Registered Holstein farm owned by his parents in Hanford. When he was eight, Jerseys came to the farm as project heifers for him and his brothers. Matt found success in the ring with brown cows and grew the Evangelo Jerseys herd. After he graduated from Cal Poly in 2005, he returned to the dairy full time and evaluated cows part-time for Semex as well. In 2014, his parents helped Matt and Lauren start a second dairy. Three years later, the herds were merged to establish Bar E Dairy. The Evangelos focus on developing superior genetics, utilizing technology, and providing excellent cow comfort. They installed the SCR activity monitoring system from Allflex in 2019 and have continued to improve cooling equipment to combat temperatures that often surpass 100˚F in the summer. In the mating program, priority is placed on bulls that transmit high fat and protein yield and desirable udder traits. All heifers are genotyped. The top end of the herd is mated to gender-sorted genomic bulls from Semex and Select Sires. Animals with lower genetic merit are bred to beef bulls. Matt and Lauren also use high-type bulls on a few fancy pedigreed animals for the show market. Among the bulls that have been sold to A.I. include the breed’s former #1 bull for Jersey Udder Index, Evangelo Del Primero, at Accelerated Genetics. He has

Amy Maxwell Amy Maxwell and her family own and operate Cinnamon Ridge Jerseys, a diversified farming operation, in Donahue, Iowa. The dairy farm on which she grew up was very different than the one she now manages. But it was time in the tie-stall barn working with 40 cows two decades ago that laid the foundation for her success milking 210 cows with robots today. For Amy, success hinges on a strong work ethic and quality care for the cows, be the herd small or large. Amy has pursued opportunities to learn and network from the onset. She attended the inaugural Jersey Youth Academy in 2009 and worked as an intern at High Lawn Farm, Lee, Mass., in the summer of 2011 as recipient of the Fred Stout Experience Award. She was a member of the dairy judging team for Iowa State University in 2010, where she was exposed to a variety of management styles at farms that hosted team practices. The following year, she earned a degree in agricultural business and economics from Iowa State. Amy spent the next several months working at other dairies around the country to gain knowledge she would bring to back to Cinnamon Ridge Jerseys. A six-month internship at Forest Glen Jerseys in Dayton, Ore., brought proficiency in breeding and experience caring for a large organic dairy herd. She was responsible for inseminating the 2,000-cow herd and helped with vaccinations, newborn and postpartum care, and veterinary visits. She also spent time at two dairies that used Lely and DeLaval robots to learn the pros and cons of each manufacturer and determine a best fit for her own situation. The Maxwells settled on Lely robots because of proximity to the local dealership and compatibility with sand bedding. They began milking 80 cows with two robots in November 2012, then added another two robots in March 2013. They purchased bred heifers from the Cedarcrest Dispersal to grow the herd. With trial and error, they found the current herd size of 210 cows to be ideal for maximizing production per cow. With the transition made, the goal oriented Maxwells set their eyes on becoming the top producing herd in the nation. Though the dairy had consistently ranked among similar-sized herds, Amy set forth a strategic plan to lead all herds, regardless

of size. The Maxwells broke into the top 10 rankings in the nation in 2016 and topped the list for milk, protein, and cheese yield production in 2019. Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm retains this ranking today for actual and m.e. production with an actual average of 25,077 lbs. milk, 1,173 lbs. fat, 931 lbs. protein and a cheese yield of 3,125 lbs. From an early age, Amy saw the value of investing in elite Registered Jersey genetics and developing them at Cinnamon Ridge. She purchased her first heifer from the Pot O’Gold Sale when she was nine and made several additional purchases over the years. The herd today includes numerous descendants. Among them is Cinnamon Nitro Noble-ET, Excellent-90%, who made the nation’s top 305-day milk record for 2020. She traces four generations back to Amy’s second Pot O’Gold purchase in 2002. Amy has also marketed to A.I. and other Jersey breeders from her purchases. Three bulls from the “Noble” family are being sampled by Select Sires Inc. Cinnamon Ridge Method Bulgaria, a daughter of another Pot O’Gold purchase, sold to Pine Tree Dairy of Marshallville, Ohio, for $39,000 in 2016. She has six sons in A.I. Amy has developed other production and genetic leaders from years of Cinnamon Ridge breeding, including Cinnamon Ridge Plus Partridge, Excellent-91%, winner of the Hilmar Cheese Yield Trophy and the President’s Trophy in 2018, and Cinnamon Ridge Rasmus Lily, Very Good-86%, winner of the National Jersey Youth Production Contest in 2011. Alana operates Peterson Jerseys, a 50cow Registered Jersey dairy in Viroqua with the help of her parents, Dean and Pat. Ownership of the farm has been passed through four generations of the family, with Alana purchasing it from her parents in June 2016. Like most kids “lucky” enough to grow up on a dairy farm, Alana spent a great deal of time in the barn at a young age. That experience was the springboard for dairy youth activities, pursuit of a dairy science degree and a career decision to return to the family farm. Alana first showed at the Vernon County Fair when she was five and owned her first Jersey, a 4-H project, at the age of nine. She was making mating decisions for her cattle at 14 and involved in all aspects of the farm as a high schooler. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a degree in dairy science management and a minor in coaching then returned to the family farm. For her to continue dairying, it was clear changes needed to be made to the laborintensive, tie-stall barn of her predecessors. Alana did her research and settled on a design that was efficient and affordable and would help her meet goal one: cow comfort. In the fall of 2012, construction was begun on a 12-stall stanchion barn with lever locks and six milking units and a 50 x 100-foot barn with a bedded pack and two calving pens. They began shipping Grade-A milk in the spring of 2013. The pack barn is used as a holding pen for milking and housing during the winter. Cows are rotationally grazed during the summer. They are fed from bunks and a round bale feeder on a cement pad during the winter. Another facility improvement included a switch from Hbunks to bottomless metal feed bunks to reduce waste and aid feed removal. For young stock, a fence line feeder was purchased and stalls in the old barn retrofitted for smaller animals. Corn silage was ensiled in bags to increase quality and reduce spoilage. On her list of future improvements is a cover for the cement pad and a second pad to reduce feed and bedding costs. The results of the facility changes are healthier, more comfortable cows with higher production and fewer foot issues and a lower electricity bill. The dairy
has earned milk quality awards from Prairie Farms and Swiss Valley. Another pivotal decision for Alana was to more fully use AJCA programs and services, including REAP, and enroll the herd on official DHI test after a lapse. Among her goals is to develop a stronger market for show and A2/A2 genetics. To accomplish this, she is breeding stature into the genetics for youthful udders that she inherited. With her first herd appraisal in November 2020, this sound genetic base includes 20 Excellents and an appraisal average of 87.2%. Of these, one was appraised Excellent-94 points, three were made Excellent-92 and another three appraised Excellent-91%. Alana also became involved with the farmland conservation program from the National Resources Conservation Service and took a nutrient management class to make the farm sustainable and efficient. Alana is active off the farm too. She was elected as a director-at-large for the Wisconsin Jersey Breeders Association in 2018 and then became president of the club in 2020. She sits on the board of the Vernon County Dairy Youth Fund and chairs the Vernon County Dairy Day. She helped to establish the Cheese of Champs Sale at the Vernon County Fair, which auctions cheese made from milk produced by cows in the junior and open shows to raise funds for youth programs. She also helped to create a virtual speaking contest for youth to learn how to talk to the public about the dairy industry and to recognize public speaking (continued to page 24)

Amy attain success is a willingness to try new things and accept the outcome—good, bad, or indifferent. She instituted a quarterly meeting for everyone on the team at Cinnamon Ridge to discuss options for improving the business. Anyone and everyone who is involved is encouraged to attend, from veterinarians and nutritionists to bankers and crop advisors. Amy genotypes the entire herd, uses industry programs to source herd sires and implements JerseyMate to mate females as individuals. The breeding efforts have resulted in a REAP herd ranked among the top 25% in the nation for genetic merit, with a herd average JPI of +19 (April 2021). Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm has also earned a reputation for selling quality herd replacements and developed a solid clientele of repeat customers. Amy is also willing to share knowledge with peers. She has participated in roundtable discussions in the Jersey Journal on genotyping, robotic milkers, and dairying as a millennial. As well, the dairy has assisted in research projects sponsored by the AJCC Research Foundation, the William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute and Cornell University and the University of Missouri. Among her passions is to encourage youth to become involved with dairy. Amy and her father have helped to expand opportunities for showing and judging dairy cattle at the county fair. By opening the event to all youth (not just 4-Hers), entries have doubled since the pair assumed leadership in 2010. Amy has also helped nonfarm kids in St. Louis exhibit 4-H projects at county and state fairs. This mentorship includes a cousin, Jacob Tatko, who spent summers working at Cinnamon Ridge and saved money to buy a Jersey calf. His first purchase, JX Clemson Lemonhead 330 604 {6}, from the 2016 Pot O’Gold Sale won the ensuing production contest and the 2018 National Jersey Youth Production Contest as well. The diversified farming enterprise at Cinnamon Ridge also includes production of artisan cheese, Jersey beef, pork, and eggs. These and other goods, like the farm’s famous cinnamon rolls, are sold through The Country Cupboard farm store. Cinnamon Ridge also operates an agritourism business that includes tours of the farm. Cinnamon Ridge is a tour stop for this year’s AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings, hosted by Iowa Jersey breeders. The dairy will also host the National Heifer Sale on Friday, June 25. JERSEY JOURNAL

impacted herds internationally as well, with daughters tapped as Junior Champion of the Swiss Expo Jersey Show and Grand Champion of the German National Show. The herd is enrolled on REAP. It ranks among the top 25% in the nation for genetic merit with a herd average JPI of +14 (April 2021). With the latest appraisal in April 2021, the herd includes 31 Excellent and 398 Very Good cows. The January 2021 rolling herd average is 19,747 lbs. milk, 958 lbs. fat and 719 lbs. protein on 562 cows. Matt and Lauren believe in investing in the future of agriculture and may be as recognized for activities off the farm as for Evangelo Jerseys. Matt serves on the Kings County DHIA Board and the Kings Fair Dairy Replacement Heifer Committee and is a Region 81 delegate for Land O’Lakes. He has served the California Holstein Association as president, vice president and secretary/treasurer and was one of the state’s delegates to the national Holstein convention three times. He is a graduate of the California Dairy Leaders program sponsored by Western United Dairyman. Lauren has been secretary of the South San Joaquin Holstein Association (SSJHA) since 2006 and was committee chair for

the pre-convention tours for the national Holstein association’s convention hosted by the state in 2009. She has been a member of the county’s June dairy month committee and the dairywomen organization since 2007. Her influence as manager with the loan department at Farm Credit West has garnered financial support for many dairy and youth activities at Cal Poly, the Fresno and Kings County Fairs, and Hanford FFA, among others. But the couple is most proud of being co-chairs and founding members of the Western Classic Junior Dairy Show. The event was organized by the SSJHA in 2011, when the state of California eliminated funding for the junior show. Matt and Lauren are credited for being the driving force in the formation of The Classic and key to its development. For the ninth show in 2019, nearly 400 entries were shown by 200-plus exhibitors. For Lauren, the show may be a way for her to pay forward the doors opened for her by Monique and Mike Moretti. Though she did not grow up on a farm, the couple helped her to join 4-H when she was nine and purchase her first calf a year later. Her dairy herd numbered 15 head by the time she was a high school senior and prompted her to study dairy and agriculture at Cal Poly.
The Moretti couple was also indirectly responsible for the development of a partnership that brought some well-known genetics to Bar E Dairy. Among the other juniors they helped with dairy projects was Carly Olufs. When she showed Carly-O Tequila Alley {4} as a heifer at World Dairy Expo, she was unable to return to the Moretti’s organic dairy. She eventually found her way to Budjon Farms of Lomira, Wis. The partnership of Budjon Farms, Peter Vail, F&D Borba and F&C Borba showed her to National Grand Champion laurels in 2015. Recognizing the genetic transmitting ability of her dam, Twisted-K Iatola Apple {3}, Carly asked the Evangelos to partner with her in introfertilization to increase progeny. One of her daughters, Carly-O Tequila Afterdark-ET, Excellent-90%, is a farm favorite and in the donor dam program. Matt and Lauren gave birth to their first child, Carson Brooks, in October 2020.

She born during the Minnesota State Fair week and eventually made a trek with the show string to this fair and several others over the years. The Petersons regularly exhibit at the Wisconsin Spring Spectacular Show, the Wisconsin State Jersey Show, the Wisconsin State Fair, the International Jersey Show and the All American Jersey Show. She has shown the Supreme Champion of the Vernon County Fair three times, topped the Wisconsin Jersey Futurity, and been named the top junior exhibitor in the National Jersey Jug Futurity. In 2019, the state of Wisconsin officially recognized the Peterson family for 75 years of continuous showing at the Vernon County Fair. Alana was named Wisconsin Junior Jersey Breeder of the Year in 2006 and featured by Dairy Star in the Women in Dairy series in 2018. She has coached basketball and softball and grows giant pumpkins. It is her goal to win the largestpumpkin class at the Vernon County Fair. She has come close several times with entries that weigh more than 300 lbs. July 1 is the deadline to apply for scholarship and educational awards administered by the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA), Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The funds provide financial support for young Jersey owners pursuing a college or university degree or, in some cases, gaining hands-on experience in the development and management of Registered Jersey™ cattle. Eligible applicants are Junior or Lifetime members of the association with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale). New is the the Walter and Joyce Owens Family Scholarship. Walter and Joyce provided a monetary gift to establish this scholarship. It will be awarded annually to an incoming or current undergraduate student in any post education endeavor studying dairy related majors, working towards a 2-year or 4-year degree and demonstrating satisfactory academic performance. Recipients are eligible to receive scholarship up to two (2) times but must reapply to be considered. The Russell–Malnati Scholarship for Advanced Studies will be awarded to a graduate student in dairy science, animal science (dairy emphasis), large animal veterinary practice, dairy production or manufacturing, or dairy product marketing. Students who will begin a program of study at an accredited college or university in the fall of 2021 may apply for the William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship. Students who have completed at least one year of study toward their degree are eligible for the V. L. Peterson Scholarship. Also, the Jack C. A Cedarcrest Farms Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a program to earn a degree in large animal veterinary practice, dairy production, dairy manufacturing, or dairy product marketing, and who demonstrates through completed coursework and goal statement, significant progress toward this intended degree and a clear intention for a career in agriculture. The Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship is for continuing college students in any degree program area. The AJCA Directors’ Scholarship will be awarded based on academic performance, activities and accomplishments with Jersey cattle and commitment to continued involvement in the Jersey dairy business. The Bob Toole Jersey Youth Award can be used for educational expenses or a well-defined practical experience related to breeding, developing and showing Registered Jerseys. The Morris B. Ewing ABS Genetic Performance Scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student seeking a career in genetics, dairy production, large animal veterinary medicine or milk marketing. The Lineweaver Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate who has completed at least one year of study in a four-year program focused on dairy science, animal science (dairy emphasis) or dairy products. The recipient of the Anne E. Perchard Challenge Award will be selected from among applicants for the national achievement contest and/or scholarship program to recognize abilities and leadership potential and, in turn, challenging the recipient to achieve his/her potential through continuing Jersey activities. Also, the Reuben R. Cowles Jersey Youth Award will be presented to an eligible resident of Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia to be used for educational expenses or to travel to the All American Jersey Show and Sale, the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings or other Jersey educational activities. Applicants must be at least high school graduates, but not older than 36 years of age as of January 1, 2021. Judges Named for 2021 All American Jersey Shows The judges have been selected for The 69th All American Jersey Shows, sponsored by the American Jersey Cattle Association of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The largest exhibition of Registered Jersey™ cattle in the world, the three shows of The All American, will be held November 6, 7, and 8, 2021, in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. Ted DeMent, Kenney, Ill., will judge The All American Jersey Show on Monday, November 8. This will be his third time to officiate the open show, following his appearances in 2000 and 2008. DeMent also judged the National Jersey Jug Futurity in 2002 and 2016. In 2011, he served as the judge of the All American Junior Show. He has officiated at state and national shows for every dairy breed and has served on the Ayrshire, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn All-American panels. He judged the national Jersey show in Ecuador in 2015. He and his family own and operate DeMents Jerseys. Ted was employed as a type evaluator by the Jersey association for five years and has served on the AJCA Type Advisory Committee. Selected to place the oldest and richest class for dairy cattle in the world is Brady Core, Salvisa, Ky. He will place the 68th National Jersey Jug Futurity on November 7. This will be his first time to judge the class, but in 2012 he bred and exhibited the winner, KCJF Tracer Ritzy. In 2019, he was selected to judge the All American Junior Jersey Show. He was the junior show’s associate judge in 2017. He has officiated at many state and regional shows including the Dixie National Livestock Show, Wisconsin State Fair Junior Show, Ohio State Fair Junior Jersey Show and Tennessee State Fair. There are 298 three-year-olds currently eligible for the 2021 National Jersey Jug Futurity. Last year, the show offered a grand total of $8,130 in premiums, with the winner receiving a check for $2,020. Judge for The All American Junior Jersey Show on Saturday, November 6 will be Louie Cozzitorto, Jackson, Tenn. Louie has judged the Illinois, Maryland and Michigan State Shows in addition to serving as an associate judge for the National Jersey Jug Futurity in 2018. He has judged many county, district and regional shows and has international experience judging in Australia. Louie was employed as a type evaluator by the Jersey association for seven years. Candidates for AJCA and NAJ Elections AJCA President Nominee Jonathan Merriam Jonathan Merriam, Hickman, Calif., has been nominated for President of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA). He currently is serving his third term as AJCA president. Merriam grew up on the family dairy farm in Hickman and now works as the genetics specialist at Ahlem Farms Partnership in Hilmar, Calif. The 7,000-cow dairy owned by Carolyn Ahlem, Sabino AhlemHerrera and Roger Herrera milks cows on three dairies using several AJCA programs, including REAP and JerseyMate, and JerseyTags for permanent identification. Ahlem Farms Partnership is a charter investor in Project Equity and a contract advertiser with the Jersey Journal. The dairy is also a founder of Hilmar Cheese Company. All three herds have herd averages over 17,600 lbs. milk (actual) and herd average JPIs over +21. Among herds with 750 or more cows, Ahlem Farms Jerseys ranks seventh for protein with an average of 18,753 lbs. milk, 870 lbs. fat and 713 lbs. protein on 1,713 cows. Ahlem Farms Partnership ranks 10th for fat with a herd average of 18,217 lbs. milk, 888 lbs. fat and 686 lbs. protein. The home dairy ranks #14 in the nation for genetic merit with a herd average JPI of +47 on 3,534 cows. Eighty-nine percent are genotyped. Merriam grew up on 400-cow dairy farm in central California, where he and his family milked 250 Registered Jerseys and 150 grade Holsteins. His grandfather, William Merriam, established the dairy herd with Jerseys in 1929 and added Holsteins in the 1960s, when the creamery required their addition due to public concern about high fat milk. As a youth, he was active in 4-H and FFA, where he earned the American FFA Degree. A highlight of his show career was exhibiting Supreme Champion at the California State Fair with a cow bred by James Pappas of Stardust Jerseys. But with the growing interest in niche and artisan foods in recent years and the Jersey being the perfect cow to produce these value-added products, she revisited that goal and made the decision to run for Director.

With the most recent appraisal, the herd includes 21 Excellent and 134 Very Good cows and has an average of 82%. AJCA Director Nominee Bradley Taylor Bradley Taylor, Booneville, Miss., has been nominated to serve as Director from the Fifth District of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA). He is serving his f irst term as Director, having been elected to the position in 2018. He currently chairs the Finance Committee and is a member of the Breed Improvement Committee as well. Taylor owns and operates Taylor Jersey Farm Inc. with his wife, Carla, sons, Lee, Carl and Holden, and parents, Royal and Marthell. The 150-cow Registered Jersey herd is enrolled on REAP, uses JerseyTags for permanent identification and is a contract advertiser with the Jersey Journal. Taylor Jersey Farm has a 2020 lactation average (m.e.) of 14,751 lbs. milk, 644 lbs. fat and 514 lbs. protein and an appraisal average of 82.6%, with 15 Excellent and 70 Very Good cows. The dairy is a member of Dixieland Jersey Sires and Liberty Jersey Sires. Milk has been shipped to Lone Star Milk Producers since October 2020. Taylor grew up on the family farm, which has been in operation since 1966, and graduated from Mississippi State University in 2000 with a degree in animal and dairy science. For four years after graduation, he worked off the farm with Jersey Marketing Service as part of the crew for sales like the Deep South and Southeast Heifer Growers South Sale and the All American Jersey Sale, where he met Carla, an AJCANAJ Area Representative at the time. Taylor also donated his service for the 2005 National Heifer Sale in Washington, Pa., which generated funds for the AJCC Research Foundation. Taylor Jersey Farm also regularly consigns to leading Jersey sales, including the National Heifer Sale, the All American and several regional sales. The Taylors will host the second Southern Selection Sale this May at Taylor Jersey Farm. They hosted the inaugural event in May 2017. The Taylors also merchandise cattle privately, selling most bulls calves as herd sires for dairy farms across the southeast. Taylor Jersey Farm has sent 13 bulls to (continued to page 38)

NAJ Director Nominee John H. Kokoski John H. Kokoski, Hadley, Mass., has been nominated to serve as District 3 Director for National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ). He is currently serving his fourth term as director, having been appointed to the position in 2007 when former director, David Chamberlain, was elected president of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA). John is also serving his third term as president of NAJ. Kokoski is the fourth generation to farm the land initially purchased by his great-great grandfather in 1904. A 1969 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Kokoski took over operation of the farm in 1986 and phased out the vegetable and tobacco business to focus on dairying. Mapleline Farm has direct marketed milk from its Registered Jersey herd since 1995. Initially, milk was processed and bottled (continued to page 39)

Ralph Frerichs, LaGrange, Texas, has been nominated for Director of the Ninth District of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA). He also served on the organization’s Executive, Finance, Breed Improvement, Information Technology and Identif ication and Registration Committees. Frerichs operates Frerichs Dairy Inc. with his wife, Faith, and his brother, Robert, and his son, Neal. His parents, Marian and the late Edgar Frerichs, got into the Jersey business in 1948 with a handful of Jersey cows, the first one a wedding gift for the couple. The herd was enrolled in the Genetic

Born in Mexico, he emigrated with his family to the United States when he was four years old and grew up in Los Angeles, Calif. He pursued a career in law enforcement, working as patrol deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department for eight years. He and his wife, Heather, and children, Regan, Ryleigh and Asher, raise a few milk cows and bred heifers and care for a small flock of chickens at the home farm in Northwood. They breed Registered Jerseys with a focus on style and balance and use his family’s childhood prefix, Johnsonacres. Success with their breeding philosophy came most recently in 2019 with Johnsonacres Colton Behold. She was named Supreme Junior Champion of the New Hampshire Jersey Breed Show and Reserve Junior Champion of the Eastern States Exposition Junior Show and earned an Honorable Mention Junior All American award from AllBreed Access. The Johnsons hope to exhibit her in the 2021 National Jersey Jug Futurity. Show ring experiences with animals like “Behold” are one of the joys of dairying for cattle breeders like Jason. He fondly remembers his first show calf, “Rosie,” who took him to the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass., for the first time as a youth. She and Jason paraded show rings in the same era as her world-famous paternal sister, two-time National Grand Champion, Billings Top Rosanne. In an act of serendipity, Jason was presented with opportunity to build on “Rosanne’s” genetics nearly three decades later as herd manager at Billings Farm. While at Billings, Jason helped to revive the breeding and show programs, with several cows standing in the same spotlight as the former Billings Farm resident. Jason also developed the “B” cow family and revived the merchandising program at the farm. Jason is the vice president of the New England Jersey Breeders Association. He has served as a director of the Vermont Jersey Breeders Association six years and was elected president and vice president as well. He has chaired the sale committee for the Northeast Jersey Breeders Classic and sat on the All American Sale Committee. While in college, he helped to revive the university dairy club and was a member of the dairy judging team that competed nationally. Among his proudest moments was receiving the A.C. “Whitie” Thompson Memorial Award at World Dairy Expo in 2015. The award is presented annually to honor a herdsman or showman who exhibits exemplary leadership and sportsmanship throughout Expo. Jason’s desire to serve on the AJCA Board stems from his experience working on Jersey dairies in three New England states. He would like to be a voice for the herds from the Northeast. Spring Spectacular Show in 2019 for her current owner, Jason Luttrop of Lost Elm Jerseys, Berlin, Wis. Moira grew up on Tierney Jersey Farm in Malone, N.Y. The dairy is currently operated by her brother-in-law and sister, Charles and Jennifer Tierney Bosley, with the help of her semi-retired father, Jack Tierney. Some of the genetics in Moira’s herd today trace to Tierney Jerseys. She was a 12-year member of 4-H. She participated in showmanship and dairy judging, winning the judging contest held at the Eastern States Exposition in 1995. She earned an associate degree from SUNY-Cobleskill and an undergraduate degree in animal science from Cornell University in 1998. She was fitting chair of the Dairy Fashion Sale conducted by SUNY-Cobleskill and a member of the Cornell Dairy Club. For 11 years, Moira worked with 2,600 dairy goats in a transgenic program. She was responsible for as many as 16 employees, farm wide animal nutrition and the kid rearing program, which included more than 1,000 kids. She also worked as a milk tester for Dairy One for three years. She tested for herds with varying management styles and sizes and gained valuable experience with the software programs Dairy Comp 305 and PC Dart. A strong advocate for agriculture across New England, Moira is the current president of the New England Jersey Breeders Association (NEJBA) and has been the Jersey representative at the Eastern States Exposition for the past 20 years. She has served the Massachusetts Jersey Cattle Club as president and director and been a member of the show committee, where she helps to raise funds and promote the show each summer. Moira manages and creates posts for Facebook pages for the NEJBA, the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale and Poitras Jersey and Sire Services. She has been a coach for the Massachusetts 4-H dairy judging program for 20 years and has chaired the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale, which benefits the state’s dairy program, for many years. She chaired the All Breeds Fall Show in October 2020 and is heading up the Northeast All Breeds Spring Show, to be held in May. Lori grew up on Ralaine Jersey Farm in Bedford County. Among her early memories are the odd-looking cross-bred calves that were the result of productive grade Jersey cows being bred to beef bulls. Her parents set a goal to phase out these animals and become a fully Registered Jersey herd. Over time, they reached their goal. And with the use of AJCA services like REAP and bulls from the young sire groups, they consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation for genetic merit and production. They regularly received

the Norman Genetic Award, presented to Pennsylvania’s high herd for genetic merit, and sent Ralaine Paramount Peter to Accelerated Genetics. In 2005, several issues converged to create a difficult financial position and the herd was dispersed. With the few cows that were left behind, Lori began a new marketing venture: raw milk farmstead cheese made from milk produced by Hidden Hills Jerseys and marketed using the Hidden Hills Dairy label. Today, she produces six varieties of raw milk cheese in a licensed, on-farm creamery from milk produced by 15 cows. Most of the cheese is sold to restaurants and stores in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Old Gold, an aged gouda style cheese, has a growing following as a finishing cheese on pizza. It is shipped as far as Vermont and Texas. Lori recently began participating in REAP again and will soon market cheese with the Queen of Quality label. Cows
are rotationally grazed during the grazing season. The farm also makes grass hay from 150 acres of fields. Through cheesemaking, Lori was introduced to a new segment of the dairy industry. She has entered cheese competitions and hosted cheesemaking classes at the creamery. She was a member of the steering committee that established the Pennsylvania Cheese Guild and a charter member of the organization. Lori has been active with Jersey programs and events as well. She has served the Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Association as president, director, and youth program coordinator. She received the organization’s Distinguished Service Award in 2015. She has also served on the All American Junior Show Committee and was the Jersey representative on the board for the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pa. (continued to page 34)

She has also been a moderator for the middle Pennsylvania region. At the denominational level, she is a former vice chair and acting chair of the Ministry and Missions Board and represented the denomination on the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches. The youngest of eight children, Joe grew up on a registered Holstein farm in Missouri. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1991 with a degree in dairy science. He had a 17-year career in A.I. with the former Sire Power of Tunkhannock, Pa. (now Select Sires). While with Sire Power, he worked with the organi-
zation’s mating program and the public relations department. His love for Jerseys deepened when he married Melinda in 1995 and joined her parents, David and Marilyn Quick, in the operation of their Registered Jersey herd. They partnered with the Quicks until 2001, when Joe and Melinda assumed sole ownership at the passing of Melinda’s father. Joe also worked part-time as an appraiser with the AJCA. Joe and Melinda received the AJCA Young Jersey Breeder Award in 2003. Since purchasing the farm, they have made numerous additions and improvements to the facilities. Today cows are milked in a double-six step-up parlor. They are housed in a two-row freestall barn that was built in 2002 and subsequently expanded. They are then sent to a pair of local calf growers, where they are raised until confirmed pregnant, then brought back to the home farm. The family farms about 700 acres of corn and alfalfa hay as well, growing most of the forage needs for the herd. Joe is a member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Montrose, Pa. Both Kyle, 19, and Corey, 16, have been active in agriculture programs for youth. They especially enjoy showing and judging cattle. Following college, Kyle plans to return home to partner with his parents in operation of the farm.
Sale. He placed third in the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest. Jonathan has an associate’s degree in dairy science from Modesto Junior College. He graduated from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo with a major in dairy science and a minor in agriculture business. He also received a master’s degree in dairy genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Merriam was selected for the California Agriculture Leadership program, a twoyear leadership program with extensive training in leadership areas of health, communication and politics. The program included a week-long trip to Washington D.C. to meet with politicians to discuss agriculture issues and a three-week excursion to India and Nepal to share agricultural knowledge and experience with thirdworld countries. Jonathan was general chair for the 2019 All American and sits on the board of Jerseyland Sires. Jonathan has served on the Hickman School Board, an elected position, for nearly 20 years, serving as

president three times, gaining experience, and understanding in all aspects of public education, government regulations, negotiations, and staff evaluations. He helps coach the FFA dairy judging team, is a 4-H dairy project leader and volunteers to serve community through church and other civic opportunities. Jonathan and his wife, Becca, have four children. Kathryn, 23, is a graduate of Brigham Young University-Idaho, where she earned a degree in English. She is a published author with her first novel, No Matter What, released last year and the sequel later this year. Reva, 22, is working as an emergency medical technician planning to be a nurse. Grace, 19, is a Certified Nursing Assistant and plans to also be a nurse. Nathan, 18, attends Spartan College in Tulsa, OK studying engineering. The Taylors also enjoy showing Registered Jerseys. Bradley has been an exhibitor at the Mississippi State Fair every year since 1980 and has shown in the Mississippi Jersey Futurity each year since 1984. The Taylors exhibit cattle at several county fairs each year and have also shown at The All American Jersey Show. Bradley currently chairs the AJCA Type Committee and serves on the All American Sale Committee as well. He is a former board member for Dixieland Jersey Sires and vice president of the Mississippi Jersey Cattle Club. He served the Southeast Area Council of Dairy Farmers of America for 10 years, including the office of secretary. He sat on the board of the Mississippi American Dairy Association for seven years and currently serves on the Dairy Research

Recovery program in the 1970s and today is a fully-registered herd of 120 milking cows. Frerichs Dairy has been enrolled on REAP since its inception and contributed to Project Equity since 1988. The farm is a member of Dixieland Jersey Sires Inc. and has contributed to the AJCC Research Foundation. The Frerichs family has been actively involved in educating the public about dairy farming through the Jersey Barnyard. The hands-on barnyard exhibit provides self-guided and guided tours to local residents, tourists, schools and groups, with opportunity to pet and feed a variety of farm animals, milk a cow by hand, venture through a hay maze and learn about other farm activities. They expanded their business to include Grade A raw milk, pastured eggs, grass fed beef, organic chicken and pastured pork. The farm store is packed with domestic and imported cheeses and local farm goods to support other farmers in their value-added endeavors. They also operate the Texas Jersey
Cheese Company. For 10 years, Ralph and Faith made the all-natural Jersey cheese by hand. Today it is made by others so the couple can concentrate on other aspects of the farm. Their cheese is sold locally and online. Frerichs Dairy is home to the well-known “Belle,” television star and “spokescow” for Blue Bell Creameries. “Belle” has appeared in many commercials and traveled extensively promoting Blue Bell ice cream. “Belle” and her herdmates have starred in 11 commercials for Blue Bell ice cream. The farm’s Jerseys have also appeared in commercials for Astro Yogurt and Promised Land Dairy. Frerichs, a graduate of Texas A & M University with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science, has served as the Texas Jersey Cattle Club president, vice-president and director and sat on numerous committees. He was a co-chair of the 1994 National Heifer Sale and served on the All American Sale and Youth Committees and the Jersey Jug Committee. He has participated in the Young Dairy Leader Institute and received the Texas DHIA Master Dairy Producer Award. The Frerichs were recipients of the Young Jersey Breeder Award in 1988 and have participated in AMPI’s Young Cooperative (continued to page 41)

A wholesale delivery business then grew out of the demand for all-Jersey milk, especially in the local restaurant scene which loved cooking and baking with premium Jersey milk. In January 2004, the farm constructed its own processing and bottling plant, bottling in both glass and plastic. Today, Mapleline Farm’s milk can be found throughout the state of Massachusetts, in grocery and specialty food stores, restaurants, coffee shops and institution dining services. Mapleline Farm milk is a certified “Queen of Quality” All-Jersey product, and proudly displays the “Queen of Quality” logo on its returnable glass bottles. Its chocolate milk has been featured by many food editors and recently named “Best Chocolate Milk in Massachusetts.” The herd of 110 cows is enrolled on REAP, a contract advertiser in the Jersey Journal and a member of New England Jersey Sires. The herd has a 2020 AJCA lactation average (m.e.) of 18,907 lbs. milk, 1,006 lbs. fat and 690 lbs. protein on 114 lactations and an appraisal average of 83.6% after the January 2021 appraisal. Cows are milked in a double-seven, rapid-exit parlor and housed in free stalls. Mapleline Farm routinely consigns animals to The All American Jersey Sale, the Massachusetts Blue-Ribbon Calf Sale, the National Heifer Sale, and the New England Spring Sale. Mapleline Farm has been named a Dairy of Distinction by the Massachusetts Farm Bureau for 10 years and was recognized as a Century Farm by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources in 2004. Mapleline Farm has been featured extensively in articles and tours sponsored by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service because of its conservation efforts and nutrient management plan. The farm also installed a total of 150-kilowatt solar generating system that went online in October 2016. In 2019 the University of Massachusetts presented Mapleline Farm with its “Sustainability Award.” Kokoski has sat on the New England Dairy Promotion Board and served the organization as director for more than 25 years. He has been a member of the Massachusetts Cooperative Milk Producers Federation and sat on its board for several years. Kokoski is past president of the Massachusetts Jersey Cattle Club and the New England Jersey Breeders Association. He has served as chair of the New England Spring Sale. MAY 2021

The herds continue the tradition of the foundation herd by breeding high-scoring, high-producing, long-lived cows. The dairies are actively involved with Jerseyland Sires and use JerseyMate to assist with mating cows and heifers. Though raised in Los Angeles, Herrera always yearned for small town life, which is what he got when he moved to Hilmar and began his dairy career.

Get Transfers In Order For Junior Show Season
A new year, and parents’ thoughts turn to, “What are the kids’ project animals going to be this year?” The next question goes like this: Please advise me as to what steps a junior (under 20 years of age) needs to take in order to show a Jersey at all shows. Can an animal be leased or does the animal need to be transferred into the junior’s ownership? The answer is simple. File a transfer of ownership so that the junior is listed as a Recorded Owner on the registration certificate. Ownership rules vary from state to state. Some do allow leasing. Others allow animals to be registered in the farm name, but require that paperwork be completed and filed certifying that an animal is the junior’s 4-H or FFA project. What about the All American Junior Jersey Show, the biggest junior Jersey show of the year? The ownership policy is as follows: Animals are eligible when recorded by the American Jersey Cattle Association in the Herd Register or with Generation Page 42
Count 4 or greater, or by Jersey Canada with registry status of 93.75% and greater. The exhibitor must be listed as Recorded Owner on the registration certificate, either (1) as the sole owner or (2) by his/ her name in joint ownership. If the joint ownership includes more than one person meeting the eligibility requirements of Rule 1 (above), one of them must be declared as the exhibitor during check-in. Animals must be registered and/or transferred to meet one of the above ownership requirements on or before August 1, 2021. The recording date is the postmark date and will be considered the date of registration and/or transfer. So, submit the transfer of ownership as soon as you figure out which animals are going to be the projects this year. That one step will save you the effort of researching the exhibitor ownership requirements for all the shows you are considering. A final note: Exhibitors at the All American Junior Jersey Show are also required to be members (junior or lifetime) of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Applications for membership are available online at http://bit.do/JuniorMembership.
Junior Awards Available Throughout the year, awards for shows and production and judging contests are provided by the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) at events specifically for Jersey juniors. For junior shows at county, district, and state levels, the AJCA will provide ribbons for the first, second, and third place animals, plus a Grand Champion rosette. In addition to the rosette, a special award is provided for the Grand Champion at state fairs and AJCA-designated regional shows. Awards are also provided for showmanship contests exclusively for Jersey juniors. Awards must be requested annually. Contact the AJCA Director of Communicaitons at 614/322-4451, at least two weeks in advance of the event. Regretfully, requests made within two weeks of the show date cannot be filled.

North Carolina Recognizes Jersey Breeders
Though members of the North Carolina Jersey Breeders Association did not gather for their annual meeting due to the pandemic, they continued to recognize winners of the production and youth awards normally presented at the meeting. Officers will continue their roles, with Corey Alan Lutz, Lincolnton, serving as president and Major Bond, Hickory, as vice president. Shirley LeForge, Union Grove, will continue as secretary, and Coy Reese, Taylorsville, as treasurer. Allie Rollins, Ayden, won the 2021 North Carolina Pot of Gold Production Contest with her entry, Piedmont Megapower Beca. The Very Good-85% daughter of River Valley PF Megapower-ET, GJPI +52, produced a first lactation with a total dollar value of $7,034.57. The m.e. of the 2-1 record is 21,809–1,153–834. “Beca” was purchased in the 2018 North Carolina Pot of Gold Sale from Corey and Mandy Lutz and James and Olivia Person of Piedmont Jerseys, Lincolnton, and milked at Simply Natural Farm in Ayden. Bryson Baldwin, Statesville, placed second in the 2021 North Carolina Pot of Gold Production Contest with JX Oliver Lucky L Candance {4}-P, Very Good83%. She produced a first lactation with a value of 5,973.01. Bryson purchased her from Dennis T. Leamon, Lucky L Jerseys, also of Statesville, in the 2018 sale. Emily Holland, Olin, won the Kenneth
E. Myatt Senior Memorial trophy for exhibiting the Grand Champion at the 2020 North Carolina Junior Dairy Show, TC 2429 Texas Iris, Very Good-83%. Production Awards Members were recognized for herd achievements in production and other management benchmarks. The 129-cow herd owned by Brian J. Moore of Mount Ulla led the state for average production with a 2020 herd average of 22,301 lbs. milk, 966 lbs. fat and 795 lbs. protein. The herd also was the leader for lowest age at first calving, with a herd average of 22 months during 2020. A member of the milking string, Moo Glowfly Axis 1312, won the Myatt-Lutz Cup for m.e. protein production among all cows, regardless of age. She made a record with an m.e. of 1,169 lbs. protein to win the award. The record also ranks among the top 305-day records in the nation for 2020. As a senior four-year-old, she made 36,340 lbs. milk, 1,650 lbs. fat, 1,295 lbs. protein, and 4,434 lbs. cheese yield to rank fourth for cheese yield and fifth for protein. This is the second consecutive milk record over 32,000 lbs. milk for the Very Good-81% daughter of Sugar Grove Valentino Axis, GJPI +29. North Carolina State University of Raleigh was the state’s leader for somatic cell count and calving interval, with averages of 133 for cell count and 11.8 months for calving interval. Maryland Breeders Meet Virtually Members of the Maryland Jersey Cattle Club (MJCC) used Zoom to conduct this year’s annual meeting on March 13, 2021. They tended organization business and recognized Maryland Jersey breeders for achievements. They were also brought up to speed on national Jersey activities from Scott Holcomb, their Area Representative for the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc. Robbie Shaw, Fairplay, received the Herbert Hoopes Outstanding Senior Member Award for service to the club. Shaw currently serves as vice president of the MJCC. Morgan Osborn-Wotthlie, Union Bridge, will assume a new role on the royal court this year as Maryland Jersey Queen after serving the past two years as Maryland Jersey Princess. Stepping into her shoes as the new princess is Emmah Utterback of Jefferson. Caroline and Olivia Dinkel of Frederick received John Stiles Outstanding Junior Member Awards and scholarships from the MJCC. In the record books contest, Lilah Utterback, Jefferson, was named winner of the junior division for girls. Daniel Clougherty, Easton, topped the junior division for boys. Claire Minde, Belair, won the intermediate division for girls. Lane and Noah Utterback, Jefferson, earned awards in the intermediate division for boys. Winners received Maryland Jerseys tee-shirts. Six juniors received newly designed, full-color Junior All-Maryland or Reserve Junior All-Maryland certificates. Noah Utterback took home four Junior All-Maryland and two Reserve Junior All-Maryland awards. Lane Riggleman, Jefferson, received three All-Maryland certificates and was named co-winner of a Reserve Junior All-Maryland heifer. Other juniors to receive certificates were Tristan R. For the fifth consecutive year, Walnut Ridge Jerseys, Middletown, won the herd average division for herds with 10-49 cows and received the J. Hanson Hoffman Award for overall high herd average. The 37-cow herd owned by Pam and Danny Moser has a 2020 rolling herd average of 18,402 lbs. milk, 1,107 lbs. fat and 676 lbs. protein, with an MFP$ of 4,418. The Moser herd is also the nation’s leading fat producer on an actual and m.e. basis. Walnut Ridge Jerseys also took home five certificates for individual cow production. Among milking yearlings, Walnut Ridge Barnabas Mint was the state’s top producer. She produced a 1-10 record with an m.e. of 31,850–1,634–1,050 and a value of $6,800. Walnut Ridge Chrome Molly, Very Good-83%, was the junior three-year-old leader with a 3-5 record with an m.e. of 26,880–1,902–811 and MFP$ of 6,572. Her paternal sister, JX Walnut Ridge Chrome Hazel {2}, Excellent-91%, led senior three-year-olds with a 3-7 record with an m.e. of 30,530–2,388– 919 and a value of $7,904. PHF V.B. Clementine, Excellent-91%, was the high producer among four-yearolds. Her 4-10 record has an m.e. of 24,460–1,852–949 and an MFP$ of 6,740.
In the division for cows 5-7 years-of-age, Te-Faw Hire Gun Kandy Kane, Excellent-90%, made the top record. Her 5-2 record had an m.e. of 23,220–1,664–919 and a value of $6,067. In the herd average division for herds with 40 or more cows, Michael Forsythe, Hagerstown, led his peers with a 2020 herd average of 16,995 lbs. milk, 813 lbs. fat, 630 lbs. protein and a value of $3,686. Ehrhardt Farm Inc., Baldwin, received two certificates for individual cow production and the award for lifetime production. Chilli Andreas Conclusion-ET, Very Good-87%, earned the prize for high junior two-year-old production. Her 2-4 record has an m.e. of 24,510–1,618–904 and an MFP$ of 6,174. Her maternal sister, Chilli Action Couture-ET, Excellent-92%, was the winner for cows eight years-of-age and older. Her 9-6 record has an m.e. of 21,850–1,118–699 and a value of $4,740. For the second consecutive year, Jewels Sapphire, Excellent-93%, earned the top prize in the lifetime production division. The value of her lifetime production is $37,341, with 164,950 lbs. milk, 8,397 lbs. fat and 6,346 lbs. protein. The final award for individual cow production was presented to Spring Valley Jerseys, Westminster, for SVHeaths Colton Brown Sugar, Very Good-87%. She topped her senior two-year-old peers with a 2-8 record with an m.e. of 19,170– 894–599 and a value of $3,700. Business Meeting Members were invited to attend this year’s Maryland Jersey Field Day on June 19 at the Frederick Fairgrounds. As well, the Maryland Jersey Picnic will be hosted by the Kepler family at the farm in Woodsboro on July 24, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Officers were re-elected to serve the MJCC again in 2021. Richard Keppler, Woodsboro, will serve as president and Robbie Shaw will be vice president. Katie Albaugh Stevens, Walkersville, is secretary and Ryan Haines, Taneytown, will serve as treasurer, with assistance from Katie Stevens.

Buckeye Classic Kicks Off 2021 Spring Sales
The Ohio State University Buckeye Dairy Club and Jersey Marketing Service hosted the 27th annual Buckeye Classic Jersey Sale on March 31, 2021. The annual sale was held in conjunction with the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo at the Pickaway County Fairgrounds in Circleville, Ohio. The sale offered a combination of genomics and high type in the lineup. Topping the sale was a high genetic polled heifer from Matthew Steiner, Marshallville, Ohio. JX Pine-Tree 1860 Demos 2418 {5}P-ET was purchased for $4,250 by Ed and Lori Jasurda, Phillips, Wis. The couple placed the bid online through JerseyAuctionLive.com. “2418” is a June 2020 heifer with PTAs of +5.3 Productive Life, +$399 Net Merit, a GJUI of +18.2 and +95 for GJPI. She is sired by All Lynns Demos-P-ET, GJPI +119. Her dam is a Very Good daughter of Oaklane Dazzler Disco 2127-ET, GJPI -2. At 1-9 she has a completed record of 15,290 lbs. milk, 789 lbs. fat and 546 lbs. protein. The next dam is JX Faria Brothers Marlo Chapel Hill {3}-ET, Very Good-85%. She has three sons in A.I. sampling programs. The next dam is Very Good-87% with a best record of 26,210 lbs. milk, 1,213 lbs. fat and 965 lbs. protein. A stylish summer yearling sold for the second best price of $3,200. JX Cornish Lil Momma {5} was consigned by Greg and Megan Cornish, North Fairfield, Ohio. In Memoriam Albert P. Talbot Albert P. Talbot, Lynn, Ind., 83, passed away on March 17, 2021, at Reid Health and Hospital of Richmond, Ind. He was born on July 23, 1937, in Port Newt, Canada. A lifelong farmer, Albert got his feet wet in the business working at Heaven Hill Farms after he came to the farm in Lake Placid, N.Y., from an orphanage in New Brunswick with another farm hand, Floyd Fanjoy. The two traveled with John Perkins and the show string via box car during the glory days of the tanbark trail, working behind the scenes with the prize-winning Registered Jerseys. Talbot was a herdsman from the early 1980s until the Heaven Hill herd was transferred to the W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, N.H., in 1988. Alfred, known as “Groundhog” to many of his friends, was known for being humble, kind and active and always wearing a smile. He enjoyed fishing and, above all, spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; a son, Lloyd Talbot of Lynn; two daughters, Elizabeth Clark of Winchester, Ind., and Cindy Donell of Lynn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Albert was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Frank, Mary, and Dottie.
