COVER The recent ice storm that swept most of the country did not stop this bundled up calf from taking a moment to enjoy the results of the storm. This snapshot was taken at LadyLane Farm in Mulino, Ore. which is owned by National-All Jersey Queen of Quality producers Garry and Lacey Hansen. They bottle milk and sell it locally from their 106 cow herd of Registered Jerseys. In this issue, there is a production recap from the year for Jerseys with record setting milk, fat and protein production. Check out the herds at the top of the production charts from 2020, starting on page 18, and in breed history, on page 44. Stop at pages 12 and 13 to see what Iowa is planning for the 2021 national meetings.

The American Jersey Cattle Association promotes the use of authentic and unaltered photographic images of Jersey animals, and disapproves of the use of any photographic images that alter the body of the Jersey animal. The American Jersey Cattle Association therefore requests that all photographic images of Jersey animals submitted for publication in the Jersey Journal contain no alterations to the body of the animal. Despite its best efforts to ensure that only unaltered photographs of Jersey animals are used in this publication, the American Jersey Cattle Association cannot guarantee that every photographic image of a Jersey animal is authentic and unaltered.

Lori Sollenberger, Everett, Pa., has officially been nominated for Director of the Third District of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Bradley Taylor, Boonesville, Miss., has officially been nominated for Director of the Fifth District of the American Jersey Cattle Association ***************** Stella Rose Black-Venegas was born on February 19, 2021, to Steven and Lauren (Black) Venegas, Saluda, S.C. The couple’s first child weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz. and was 20 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Joel and Gail Black, former owners of Jo-Ren Farm, Saluda. Lauren is a member of the Jersey Jug Futurity Committee. Reporters for Fox 18 KLJB recently interviewed John Maxwell, Donohue, Iowa, to learn how Cinnamon Ridge Dairy cares for its cattle in cold weather. The video clip aired on February 11, 2021, in the height of a cold snap that brought the Quad City area some of its lowest temperatures in recent years. Maxwell explained that precautionary measures are taken heading into winter. Then, when temps drop, cows are protected from drafts and fed extra energy (corn) to enable them to generate body heat. Maxwell also put in a plug for Jerseys, the dairy breed that produces the richest, most nutritious milk. AJCA Director Maxwell and his family milk about 240 Registered Jersey cows. The herd is enrolled on REAP and leads the nation for milk, protein, and cheese yield production on both an actual and standardized basis. The Maxwells also produce cheese and raise Jersey beef. They milk the herd with Lely robots and operate an agri-tourism business on the farm. The dairy is FARM certified and works with the Food Rescue Partnership to prevent outdated food from entering landfills. Alan and Stephanie Hughes, Sunsett Dairy, Pittsville, Wis., were featured in a television commercial that ran in advance of Super Bowl LV on February 7, 2021. The three-minute spot named “Essential” paid Page 14

tribute to the heroes who help to keep life going through the pandemic. The Hugheses had an in with the creative director, CBS sports producer and seventime Emmy winner Gareth Hughes, as he is a cousin to Alan. And though most would jump at the chance to be a part of the commercial, it was Gareth’s roots in agriculture and appreciation for their occupation that sealed the deal for Alan and Stephanie. “When you get opportunity to speak on behalf of agriculture as a whole, we couldn’t say ‘no,’” Stephanie commented. Alan wears another hero hat too as a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2019 and recently assisted with the inauguration of President Joe Biden and the civil unrest in Kenosha, Wis. While Alan is away, the couple’s three sons, Bryce, Gavin, and Derek, help Stephanie hold down the fort. They began dairying on rented facilities in 2007 and purchased their current farm in 2015. The family milks a 65-cow herd of Jerseys, Holsteins, and Milking Shorthorns and ships to Dairy State Cheese. Sunsett Dairy will be running a stand at the farm this summer.

“Chrome” Semen Sales Surpass 500,000 Units

7JE5004 River Valley Cece Chrome-ET, GJPI +106, has become the second Jersey bull at Select Sires Inc., Plain City, Ohio, to surpass the milestone for half-a-million units of semen sold. He now ranks second to the organization’s lifetime Jersey sales leader, 7JE1038 All Lynns Louie ValentinoET, GJPI +9. Sales of “Chrome” surpassed the milestone in January 2021, when the son of

River Valley Cece Chrome-ET

Schultz Legal Critic-P, GJPI +48, was seven years, nine months-of-age. He has impacted the breed worldwide through his daughters and sons. “Chrome” was the second most heavily used Jersey sire of 2019. He topped the leader board in 2020 with 138 registered sons. Included in this group is the breed’s high-selling individual for 2020, BW Graduate, GJPI +144, who was syndicated at The All American Jersey Sale for $90,000 by Select Sires and the Graduate Syndicate. A “Chrome” daughter, JX Pine-Tree Freedom {4}, was the high seller at the Top of the World Sale last year at $32,500. “Chrome” entered the progeny test program at Select Sires through a partnership with his breeder, River Valley Farm of Tremont, Ill. They had purchased his dam, Lyon Celebrity CeCe-ET, from AJCA Master Breeder, Lyon Jerseys of Toledo, Iowa. “‘Chrome’ is the poster child to illustrate how daughter data helps the accuracy of genomic proofs,” commented Herby Lutz, Jersey development manager at Select Sires. “Because dairy producers provided production and appraisal data from thousands of milking daughters, ‘Chrome’ set the standard for the Jersey breed in Jersey Udder Index and Type.” With the December 2020 genetic evaluations, his proof includes 4,651 daughters in 63 herds. Daughters can be found in seven different countries across the globe.

NAAB to Roll Out New Dairy Breed Web Pages

The National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) is developing a special section on its website to help producers better understand genetic tools available for the six major dairy breeds. The web pages will be launched in late March as links off the NAAB main website. For each breed, the site will provide information on genetic conditions, genomic testing, and genetic indexes for breed specific tools. Genetic tools for the Jersey breed include Jersey Performance Index (JPI), Jersey Udder Index (JUI), and Generation Count (GC), among others. Frequently asked questions will also be answered. The NAAB website can be found at https://www.naab-css.org/. JERSEY JOURNAL

Reaping the Benefits of Identification “The dairy industry has experienced considerable volatility in the past couple of years and many herds have made the decision to let registrations go to help balance their bottom line. This REAP Registration Catch Up Incentive will allow current herds and those choosing to join or rejoin REAP to catch up their registrations at a 50% savings.” Erick Metzger, USJersey Herd Services Manager

Recognizing the difficult times dairy producers are facing, the AJCA Board of Directors voted unanimously to offer an incentive to Jersey breeders to catch up on overage registrations. The announcement was made February 1 to offer a special incentive to all current, new and herds rejoining the REAP program (oneyear enrollment commitment required). The special incentive program will run through August 31, 2021. Currently REAP is a tiered structure that includes free registration to calves under six-months of age. With the Catch Up Incentive, the cost structure will be: • Anything under 24 months of age, $0 (both electronic and keyed by staff)

• Over 24 months and carry a Generation Count of 1, 2 or 3 and submitted electronically, $2.50 • Over 24 months and Generation Count 4 or higher, submitted electronically, $5 • Over 24 months and hand-keyed by staff, $5

Now entering its 26th year, the REAP program— acronym for Registration-Equity-AppraisalPerformance—is the most encompassing program the AJCA offers. The package combines these four platforms into one parcel and gives you, the herd owner, the convenience of paying one annual fee to participate in each. It is easy to budget as you pay on a per cow basis. In addition, as a REAP herd, you receive reduced rates on many AJCA services such as genomic testing, JerseyTags, JerseyMate (free access), transfers, and advertising in the Jersey Journal. Importance of Information The AJCA just completed its ninth

year of more than 100,000 registrations—121,724 to be exact—which is more than double since 1991. These numbers demonstrate the confidence Jersey breeders have in the services offered by the association. And, indirectly shows the value placed on investing in permanent identification. These breeders realize the advantages identification offers, least of which is to their bottom line. By documenting the ancestry of your herd, you can more accurately manage inbreeding, which helps improve production traits, reproductive performance, calf mortality, and other fitness traits—all things that impact your profit margin. In addition, having this information available when you purchase cattle from other herds gets you more for every dollar you spend. Registrations are similar to an insurance policy— both life and casualty. Every individual will eventually be sold. The certificates of identification are the premium investment that keeps the cash value of the policy current and insures its full value at maturity. At the time of sale, the premiums paid in the form of registration fees will be returned to you with interest. No one ever knows when a herd may be lost due to some type of disaster. Registration serves as an insurance policy for your herd. The certificate is a documented form of identification that can help substantiate the value of the animal. If you are behind on your registrations, we encourage you to take advantage of this special and catch up. REAP is a program you will benefit from in many ways. Not only will your insurance policy be up-to-date, but you can take advantage of the many other added benefits the program offers and increase your bottom line in many ways. Animal identification is essential if the breed is to keep improving. The AJCA will continue to be innovative in providing a process that assures individual animal identification. Our #1 goal remains helping Jersey breeders increase profitability.

Jersey Production Now a Record High

M

ost of us want to leave 2020 far behind. If you milk Jersey cows, though, you may want to rethink this as production per cow improved dramatically in 2020 versus 2019. The Jersey breed production average is now at record high levels and Jersey milk is as nutrient dense as it has ever been. The American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) reports the official breed average is now 20,205 lbs. milk, 980 lbs. fat and 750 lbs. protein on a standardized mature equivalent (m.e.) basis. On a Cheddar cheese yield basis, average production is 2,547 lbs. The number of records included in the breed average is 93,082. Versus 2019, the measures for standardized production per cow for 2020 increased by 196 lbs. milk, 11 lbs. fat, 8

lbs. protein and 27 lbs. cheese yield. Though the number of lactations in the 2020 breed average is down 7,822 from the previous year, the Jersey breed continues to grow relative to other breeds. The most recent statistics (January 2020) indicate Jersey cows represent 8.72% of the national dairy herd, up from 7.73% the previous year. Sales of Jersey bull semen continue to rise as well, now accounting for 15.35% of domestic semen sales. On an actual basis, production per cow is a record high 17,855 lbs. milk, 869 lbs. fat and 661 lbs. protein. Cheese yield stands at 2,248 lbs. These numbers surpass the previous high marks for all measures of production established in 2017. Versus 2019, actual production is up, at 327 lbs. milk, 15 lbs. fat, 12 lbs. protein and 41 lbs.

Cinnamon Ridge Dairy, owned and operated by the Maxwell family of Donahue, Iowa, is the nation's top herd for milk and protein production on both an actual and mature equivalent basis for the second consecutive year. The Maxwells also make artisan cheese at the farm and run a thriving agritourism business. Cows are milked by Lely robots.

cheese yield. When expressed as energy corrected milk, production per Registered Jersey cow was 21,621 lbs., representing an increase of 384 lbs. versus 2019. This is especially good news because Jersey producers are working to breed and manage their cow in a manner that maintains competitive edge for efficiency and leaves a smaller carbon footprint in the production of cheese. The bottom line is that milk yield has increased along with fat and protein—a balancing act that is often difficult to achieve. Based on statistics of the previous 10 years, the breed lactation average is projected to reach 21,024 lbs. milk, 1,030 lbs. fat and 790 lbs. protein by 2025, with a cheese yield equivalent of 2,683 lbs. an actual basis, production is projected to reach 18,530 lbs. milk, 912 lbs. fat and 694 lbs. protein, with a cheese yield equivalent of 2,363 lbs. Cheese makers are projected to be able to make 12.75 lbs. of product per hundredweight of Jersey milk by 2025. In this annual production summary, the Jersey Journal includes lactation averages for individual herds calculated on a standardized 305-day, twice daily milking, m.e. basis and an actual basis. Production is included for lactations meeting the registry minimum of Generation Count 4 and higher. Records included in the average have data collection ratings of 85 or higher. Herds identified in the rankings have a minimum of 10 cows. High Herds for M.E. Milk For the second consecutive year, Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm, Donahue, Iowa, tops its peers for standardized milk and protein production with a 2020 lactation average of 26,503 lbs. milk, 1,250 lbs. fat and 995 lbs. protein on 197 cows. The dairy also leads the nation for cheese yield with 3,338 lbs. and ranks fifth for fat. Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm is the national leader for actual milk, protein, and cheese yield production for the second

consecutive year too with a 2020 herd average of 25,077 lbs. milk, 1,173 lbs. fat, 931 lbs. protein and 3,125 lbs. cheese yield. The fat average ranks fifth nationally. Among the nearly 200 cows on the farm in eastern Iowa are 10 who made leading 305-day records for 2020. The top milk producer, Cinnamon Ridge Nitro NobleET, Excellent-90%, made 39,160 lbs. milk, 1,205 lbs. fat and 1,317 lbs. protein at 5-3. The record ranks on the current National Class Leader list and follows on the heals of a 34,600 lbs. milk record made as a junior four-year-old. With slightly higher tests for components, the second-high milk producer in the milking string, Jake Jasmine, Very Good86%, made a 7-7 record of 38,320 lbs. milk, 1,665 lbs. fat, 1,295 lbs. protein and 4,454 lbs. cheese yield to rank among the top 305-day records for milk, protein, and cheese yield. This consistent top performer has six complete lactations, with an m.e. average of 31,335–1,308–1,071. She freshened with her seventh calf before her ninth birthday in mid-October and is projected to make another actual record exceeding 30,000 lbs. milk. Four up-and-coming young cows at Cinnamon Ridge Dairy produced records

in 2020 that rank on the National Class Leader list for milk, protein, or cheese yield production among senior two-yearolds. Included in this group is the new milk leader, Woodstock Memphis BA Maid, with 34,160 lbs. milk, 1,459 lbs. fat, 1,205 lbs. protein and 4,004 lbs. cheese yield at 2-10. The fully genotyped herd owned by the Maxwell family ranks among the top 25% in the nation for genetic merit as well with a herd average JPI of +18. For the fourth consecutive year, Joseph and Debra Brant, Cuba City, Wis., rank among the top 10 in the nation for milk, fat, or protein. The lactation average for the 21-cow herd is 25,638 lbs. milk, 1,229 lbs. fat and 931 lbs. protein. The average ranks second for milk, sixth for fat and third for protein. The cheese yield average of 3,176 lbs. ranks third in the nation. Actual production is 20,974 lbs. milk, 1,016 lbs. fat and 764 lbs. protein, which ranks second for milk among herds with 10-39 cows. Three members of the herd made actual records over 27,000 lbs. milk, including the leading component producer, Jo-DeBran Lemon Malia, Very Good-84%, with

The Lawtons also focus on functional type in the breeding program. With the latest herd appraisal, the herd includes 39 Excellent and 42 Very Good cows (none lower) and has an appraisal average of 88.6%. D & D Jerseys, Newton, Wis., returns to the top rankings again this year with a lactation average of 24,275 lbs. milk, 1,208 lbs. fat and 887 lbs. protein on 58 cows. The average ranks seventh for milk, eighth for fat and ninth for protein. This is the 13th consecutive year the herd owned by Dan Stock and Donna Phillips, D.V.M., and their daughters has ranked among the top herds in the country. The herd’s high producer for the second year running, JX Dodan Carnation MCK Bridget {5}-ET, Very Good-83%, produced 30,330 lbs. milk, 1,570 lbs. fat (5.2%) and 1,061 lbs. protein (3.5%) as a junior four-year-old. It is in the genes as her dam, JX Dodan Carnation Riley Breeze {4}, Very Good-85%, has a top record of 34,320 lbs. milk, a record that was one of the top 305-day records for 2017. D & D Jerseys also ranks among the top herds in the country for genetic merit. With the latest genetic evaluations, the dairy ranks #14 with a herd average JPI of +41 (92% genotyped). Breaking into the top 10 rankings nationally for the first time is Vierra Dairy Farms of Hilmar, Calif. With a lactation average of 23,819 lbs. milk, 1,073 lbs. fat and 864 lbs. protein, the 469-cow herd ranks eight for milk and 10th (tie) for protein. Vierra Dairy Farms also ranks among the top herds for actual production. The herd average of 22,763 lbs. milk, 1,024 lbs. fat and 820 lbs. protein ranks fourth for milk and fifth for protein. Vierra Dairy is active on the tanbark trail. The dairy earned the prestigious Premier Exhibitor banner at The All American Jersey Show in November and exhibited the Reserve Premier Performance Cow and GJPI Senior Champion, Underground Cura Cancun, Excellent-95%. The dairy also ranks among the top 25% in the nation for genetic merit with a herd average JPI of +14. Rounding out the top rankings for milk averages is the 65-cow dairy herd at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. With a lactation average of 23,597 lbs. milk, 1,036 lbs. fat and 864 lbs. protein the dairy ranks ninth for milk and 10th (tie) for protein. The well-known Randleigh research herd managed by students has consistently ranked among the top herds for production. JERSEY JOURNAL

High Herds for M.E. Components The nation’s top fat herd for both m.e. and actual production is the 19-cow Jersey herd owned by Pam and Danny Moser of Middletown, Md. The 2020 lactation average is 22,732 lbs. milk, 1,376 lbs. fat and 822 lbs. protein. The actual herd average is 20,543 lbs. milk, 1,258 lbs. fat and 746 lbs. protein. The dairy has an actual fat test of 6.1%. The herd at Walnut Ridge Farm moved up in the rankings due to tremendous gains in production (2,136 lbs. milk, 138 lbs. fat and 79 lbs. protein). Eight members of the herd made records over 1,200 lbs. fat; seven of them are appraised Excellent. Te Faw Kits Vera, Excellent-91%, made 24,870 lbs. milk, 1,683 lbs. fat (6.8%) and 830 lbs. protein at 7-9 and PHF V.B. Clementine, Excellent-91%, made 23,980 lbs. milk, 1,871 lbs. fat (7.8%) and 949 lbs. protein (4.0%) at 4-10. During 2020, the Mosers took on another venture as well—Moo Cow Creamery, an on-farm creamery to produce butter and cheese (several varieties of Cheddar, Colby and swiss). They have been selling their product locally for about a month and are taking baby steps to grow demand and expand the product line. Though they milk a herd of mixed colored breeds and Holsteins, the Mosers plan to phase out the black and whites, an ideal move to develop a more efficient cheese business. Another herd to perennially rank for fat production, Woodmohr Jerseys, Bloomer, Wis., moved up this year and now ranks fourth for lactation average and third for actual herd average. The 20-cow herd has a lactation average of 21,062 lbs. milk, 1,268 lbs. fat and 769 lbs. protein. The actual herd average is 19,604 lbs. milk, 1,179 lbs. fat and 714 lbs. protein. Though actual milk production per cow for 2020 was down 670 lbs. from 2019, a boost in fat test (6.0% for 2020 versus 5.6% for 2019) improved overall fat yield by 44 lbs. Herd owners Jon and Wendy Schmidt also focus on functional type and longevity of the herd. With the herd appraisal in November 2020, the herd now includes 29 Excellent and 13 Very Good cows (none lower) and has an appraisal average of 91%. The farm in northwest Wisconsin is also home to several lifetime production matriarchs, including a pair of full sisters, GB Jade Diva of Woodmohr, Excellent-95%, and Woodmohr Jade Lady Diva-ET, Excellent-94%. Both placed in the most recent AJCA Leading Living Lifetime Production Contest. Crosswind Jerseys of Elkton, S.D., ranks ninth for fat again this year for lactation (continued to page 28)

Policy for Maximizing Profit with Jerseys The American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) Board of Directors encourages its members to employ the following management practices to improve herd profitability: Maximize the genetic potential of the herd by • Making a minimum of 80% of all matings to a group of genotyped young bulls enrolled in progeny test programs. • Breeding heifers A.I. to proven or selected young bulls that are enrolled in progeny test programs; if natural service for heifers is a management necessity, using bulls that qualify for those programs. • Maintaining accurate identification and breeding records. • Participating in AJCA performance and functional type appraisal programs that provide the basis for genetic evaluations. • Making mating assignments that maximize profit and minimize inbreeding. Challenge the genetic capacity of the herd by • Feeding ample quantities of properly balanced rations to milking cows. • Minimizing involuntary culling so that voluntary culling can be maximized. • Providing for the special nutritional and management needs of dry cows. • Having cows in proper body condition. • Providing special attention to calf raising practices to minimize losses and optimize growth. • Using new technologies that provide economical advantages in your situation. Exploit Jersey advantages by • Using tamper-evident ID and registering calves before they are six (6) month of age. • Freshening heifers under 24 months of age. • Becoming involved in milk marketing efforts that gain equitable payment for milk components. • Becoming involved in cattle marketing efforts that supplement herd income. • Using your herd and farm to project a positive image for the Jersey breed and the dairy industry.

Still looking for the perfect gift for the special Jersey enthusiast? Membership in the American Jersey Cattle Association may be just what you are looking for. Lifetime membership costs just $100, with no annual fee, and includes a package of benefits. Members are eligible for membership rates for registration, which will save $3.00 or more on each registration application. Active members (those who have either registered a Jersey or had a Jersey transferred into their ownership within a two-year period) have voting privileges at the AJCA Annual Meeting. And, most importantly, members can participate with one another, sharing ideas and experiences as they work together to improve the Jersey breed. Who is eligible? Anyone who owns a Registered Jersey and is interested in improving the Jersey breed can apply for membership in the AJCA. Those who do not own Jerseys but still have an interest in the breed are eligible for associate membership, also lifetime, with the $100 fee. Junior membership in the Association is offered to youth under 21 years-of-age at no cost. They may register the offspring of Jerseys in their names at the membership rate. Juniors must now be a member to be eligible for all youth contests, scholarships and to show at The All American Jersey Show. Membership expires when the junior turns 21 years old, at which time membership of associate membership may be applied for. Surprise the Jersey person in your life with a gift that will continue to give for years to come. For more information on lifetime membership to the American Jersey Cattle Association and for membership applications, contact the AJCA office at 614/861-3636 or lboysel@ usjersey.com.

JERSEY JOURNAL

Jersey Leader Joe Lyon Passes at 92 The Jersey breed lost one of its leading patriarchs on January 22, 2021, with the passing of Gaylord Joe Lyon, Toledo, Iowa, at the age of 92. Lyon was the third son of the late Earl Lyon and Helen “Nellie” Zmolek Lyon, born on November 10, 1928, in the farmhouse that was his residence nearly his entire life. It was here he and his late wife, Duffy, raised their family of nine children and was his home until November 2020, when he moved to an assisted living facility to convalesce a broken hip. Well-respected, Joe was known as a “Dairyman’s Dairyman” in industry circles. His words carried weight in everything he undertook. He was the sole Democrat appointed by President Ronald Reagan on the inaugural National Dairy Board in 1984. As chair of that entity’s Product Research Committee, he played a significant role in the establishment of dairy research centers across the country. Lyon received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Jersey Cattle Club (AJCC) in 1987, was named Man of the Year by World Dairy Expo in 1982 and was the Guest of Honor at the banquet held by National Dairy Shrine in 1991. Additional accolades include the Ralph Keeling Leadership Award from the Iowa State Dairy Association in 1975 and the Richard E. Lyng Award from the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board in 2012. Joe received the Iowa Master Farmer

A local community leader as well, Joe volunteered with the Tama County Soil and Water Conservation District and the South Tama County School Board, where he was instrumental in building a new elementary school while also balancing the books. Joe often referred to himself as “The Husband of the Butter Cow Lady,” proudly taking the back seat to Duffy, who gained world-wide fame for sculpting the butter cow at the Iowa State Fair for 46 years. Recently, another of Duffy’s famed pieces, a bronze of a Jersey cow and calf on a hillside near Toledo, was recreated for display on the ISU campus. Above all, Joe valued hard work, even among his children. If chores needed to be done, extracurricular activities could wait. Despite this, he must have attended a record number of concerts, plays, recitals and sporting events of every kind over the years for his family. PERFORMANCE REPORT Top 25 Records in History and National Class Leader List The Top 25 Records for Milk, Protein and Fat completed in the history of AJCA production testing programs are listed below. The National Class Leader List summarizes the 10 highest lactations for milk, protein, fat, and cheese yield in nine age categories. Lactations are 305 days (or less) in length and are official on the AJCA records. These lists include lactations added to the database through December 31, 2020. To qualify for these lists, all

test days included in a completed 305- or 365-day lactation record must occur in a herd or herds enrolled in the Production Records Plus, TPE-Plus, REAP Plus programs, or be a Generation Count {4} or higher for registration status. An asterisk after days milked indicates that the animal was milked more than twice daily during part or all of the lactation. A “V” following the record indicates that it has been verified.

In Memoriam Karen D. Barfuss Karen D. Barfuss, Sandstone, Minn., 78, passed away peacefully at The Waterview Shores in Two Harbors, Minn., on January 18, 2021. She was born to the late Lloyd and Dorothy Ahlquist on September 6, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from Edison High School in 1960 and was united in marriage to Gerald Barfuss on March 23, 1963. They started their lives together as a married couple in Northeast Minneapolis then moved to a hobby farm in Dayton, Minn. The Barfusses moved to rural North Branch to establish a Registered Jersey dairy farm, where they made a life for themselves and their two children, Hayley and Justin. With a smile on her face and twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes, Karen was a familiar friend to many in the community through her work as a bank teller for Northwest Bank of Northeast Minneapolis, Community National Bank of North Branch and Town and Country Bank of Harris. She was secretary/treasurer for the Minnesota Jersey Cattle Association, a leader for Chisago County 4-H, an instructor for the Blizzard Ski Club, and a beauty consultant for Mary Kay. Among the many joys in her life were caring for the animals on the farm, gardening and flowers and deer and bird watching. She enjoyed annual trips to the Minnesota State Fair, social time with the “Konzas,” a group she and her girlfriends started in seventh grade, and decorating the house, especially for Christmas. Her passion for shopping and beauty meant she was always impeccably “put together.” In addition to her daughter, Hayley
