Panch Kedar and Panch Prayag - A must visited places during Badri-Kedar Yarta

Kedarnath Dham is one of the holiest visits to the famous shrine of Lord Shiva and is among the famous Chardham Yatra. At Kedarnath, Lord Shiva is manifested in the form of Jyotirlinga, the cosmic light and is set amongst the stunning mountain ranges of the Himalayas beside Mandakini River. Lord Shiva is believed to be the embodiment of all passions including love, hatred, fear, death, and mysticism, which are beautifully expressed through his various forms.

There are more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in Chamoli district out of which Kedarnath temple is the most important one. The various temples are believed to be the various parts of Lord Shiva and Panch Kedar is the most significant form. At Kedarnath, Lord Shiva’s image in the form of bull (its hump) was worshipped by the Pandavas to get rid of their sins. Other parts of Shiva's body, hands, face, navel, and locks of hair were visible at Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. These four shrines along with Shri Kedarnath Ji are worshipped as “Panch Kedar” which is the holy destination for all the Hindus.

Panch Prayag has also equal significance in this respect. “Prayag” means the confluence of two (or more) rivers. In India, there are only six most sacred Prayag, out of which the “Sangam” prayag in Allahabad is the sixth one and the remaining confluences can be found in the Garhwal regions that are known to be as Panch Prayag. These Prayag are Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag and Vishnuprayag.

Devprayag

- It is situated on the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers and is known to be the birth place of River Ganga.

Rudraprayag

It is located at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini Rivers where lord Rudreshwar is being worshipped and the place where two different ways bifurcates for Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham.

Karnaprayag

31 km from Rudraprayag, it is an icy flow from the Pindari Glacier to form Pindari River and meets Alaknanda to form the Karnaprayag confluence.

Nandprayag

20 km from Karnaprayag, Nandprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini (flowing from the glaciers in Nanda Devi peak) rivers.

Vishnuprayag

It is formed by the confluence of Vishnu Ganga (known as Alakananda at this point) and Dhauliganga River and has an ancient temple of Lord Vishnu here.

The “Panch Prayag” is important for the pilgrims since they can found them while making their devotional trip to both Kedarnath and Badrinath temples and get benefited.
