The CONnection News and Views from the University of South Carolina COLLEGE OF NURSING

SEPTEMBER 2014

Academic Year off to a Booming Start! We have officially welcomed the Class of 2018 to the College of Nursing. Along with our new freshmen, new upper division students, and new graduate students, our numbers are expanding and we are off to a booming start this academic year. In fact, we have the highest enrollment on record for the College of Nursing! On top of these achievements in recruitment of high quality students into our programs, we are enjoying momentous successes in the quality and excellence in our academic, practice, and research agendas. Our master’s and post-master’s enrollment continue to grow. However, our largest increase is in our doctoral programs – with 72 students currently enrolled in either the DNP or PhD programs. Our latest nurse practitioner board pass rates continue to exceed national and state averages, and our graduates are highly preferred among state, regional, and national employers.

We are holding our undergraduate recruits to a limited enrollment, due to clinical site availability and hospital based training requirements for the upper division. Despite this, the demand for our program, along with the admitting SAT and GPA scores, continues to rise with our national reputation by US News & World Report top ranking, excellent NCLEX pass rates, and nationally recognized faculty. I proudly share that the graduating BSN class of 2014 have earned the accolades for the highest pass rate in the history of the expanded BSN program, with 96.6% pass rate. USC continues to graduate the largest number of BSN students in the state (230-240 per year), and have higher pass rates than comparator programs of this size (in the country). These data speak volumes to our outstanding students, our faculty/staff, and our clinical partners—all of whom are invested in Carolina nurses’ success. You will be reading about our successes with research funding, and I want to particularly highlight Drs.’ Culley, Elk, and Adams with their recent NIH funding awards. Dr. Hein will be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in October, and faculty and students are receiving notices on a daily basis about awards, newly accepted publications, podium, and poster presentations at national/international conferences. Our students are experiencing success with competitive scholarship funding, notable internships, and scholarly opportunities around the world. The Children and Family Health Care Center (our nurse managed primary care clinic) is at a high demand among families in the region and continues to grow. There is no better place than the USC College of Nursing! I hope to see everyone at the 50th anniversary of the Viana MCown event on October 17th where we will celebrate our successes, embrace our history, and continue to envision our future! Jeannette O. Andrews PhD, RN, FAAN j.andrews@sc.edu

Students Corner Jordan Ferrugia spent two weeks in Costa

Rica on a medical mission trip with the program International Service Learning. She said, “It was such an unbelievable experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. It was both rewarding and humbling to bring healthcare to those who need it most. I learned so much from the other doctors and nurses on my trip that I believe will help me greatly as I begin upper division this fall. Also on my journey, I met a lot of upper division nurses from all over the country and am grateful to have made these friendships. It was a wonderful way to end my summer!”

PhD Student, Kay Lawrence, will receive the South Carolina Nurses Foundation Graduate Nurses Care Scholarship.

Student, Eboni Harris, has been selected PhD

to receive the 2014-2015 Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future-AACN Minority Nurse Faculty Scholarship.

Lancaster and Salkehatchie students on the steps of Mccutch-

eon House (the original College of Nursing at USC) came to campus as part of a summer bridge program to prepare them for upper division.

NCLEX Pass Rate Above Average NCLEX scores for our May graduates are in and USC has a 96% pass rate - higher that the state and national averages. Special recognition to our faculty, staff, and administrators in the undergraduate program for their hard work and dedication to our students’ success. USC has the largest BSN program in the state, and is a leader in producing high quality and competent nurses in our region and beyond.

Join the SCRN The South Carolina Rooster Nurses, USC’s chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing was chartered in 2012 but saw a drop in membership the following year. This year, Michael Pallon plans to help build up this organization. While AAMN is an organization which advocates for the advancement of men in the nursing profession, membership to SCRN is not exclusive to male students. Pallon plans to make SCRN’s focus as an organization to bring nursing students out of the classroom and help them gain experience off campus. Any students that are interested in becoming a part of SCRN or would like more information can contact Michael at Pallon@email.sc.edu

NCSBN Releases Results of National Simulation Study The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has released the findings of its award-winning research, “The NCSBN National Simulation Study: A Longitudinal, Randomized, Controlled Study Replacing Clinical Hours with Simulation in Prelicensure Nursing Education,” which concluded that substituting high quality simulation experiences for up to half of traditional clinical hours produces comparable end of program educational outcomes to those students whose experiences are mostly just traditional clinical hours and produces new graduates that are ready for clinical practice. CON Faculty New AAN Member On October 17th in Washington, DC, Dr. Laura C. Hein will be inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Hein is a leading scholar on LGBT health in South Carolina, and is nationally and internationally recognized. Dr. Hein’s research focuses on health disparities experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. She investigates LGBT health disparities within a social justice and public policy paradigm. The goal of her research is to impact public policy thereby decreasing LGBT health disparities and victimization. Dr. Hein’s most recent research investigated the acceptability of various aspects of a support-group intervention in the LGBT community in South Carolina. Dr. Hein was invited to the White House by HHS Secretary Sebelius, for a briefing of 150 LGBT leaders on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She returned to the White House for a follow-up briefing on July 24th, 2014. Dr. Hein was the only attendee from South Carolina. Dr. Hein is the fifth nurse to ever serve on the Board of Directors of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality in its 30+ year history. During her tenure, the board of GLMA submitted amicus briefs influencing appellate and U.S. Supreme Court decisions, regarding law and policy related to LGBT health.
