MEET THE COACHES...
Mark Trakh, who led USC and Pepperdine to NCAA Tournament appearances before guiding New Mexico State to three NCAA berths, returned to USC as its head women’s basketball coach for the 2017-18 season. “We are thrilled to welcome Mark back to USC,” athletic director Lynn Swann said in the announcement on April 21, 2016. “It was important for us to hire a coach who really wanted to be at USC, who truly cares about our student-athletes and who believes in the Trojan way of excelling. We found that coach in Mark Trakh. He has the experience and maturity to help our young team grow and develop. “Mark is a great teacher of the game. Players enjoy playing for him. He is a very effective recruiter. And he has a knack for taking teams to the NCAA Tournament, which we look for him to continue doing.” In his first season back at Troy, Trakh’s 2017-18 Trojans played an inspired season, notching a 20-win campaign but just missing out on an NCAA selection. USC went 2011 overall last season, beating three ranked opponents and finishing 9-9 in the competitive Pac-12. As a college coach, Trakh has an overall record of 413-278 in 23 years, with eight NCAA Tournament trips, seven regular season championships and five conference Coach of the Year honors. Trakh coached the Women of Troy for five seasons (2005-09). Despite a tenure hampered by injuries to key players that stalled promising seasons, Trakh’s USC teams won at least 17 games all five seasons, advanced to a pair of NCAA tourneys (getting to the second round in 2005 and 2006 before falling to the eventual NCAA runner-up both seasons),
reached at least the semifinals of the Pac10 Tourney four times (his 2009 team was a finalist), never finished below fifth in the Pac-10 and went 8-3 against crosstown rival UCLA. His debut 2005 team won 20 games, tied for second in the Pac-10 race and made USC’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in seven years, where it lost on a last-second basket in the second round. His Women of Troy players made various All-Pac-10 teams 23 times and Pac-10 AllAcademic squads 14 times, and he turned out two All-Americans and four WNBA draftees. He signed Top 10 recruiting classes four times, including the nation’s No. 1 group in 2006, and seven of his signees were McDonald’s All-Americans. Overall, he was 90-64 at USC, but resigned after the 2009 season for personal reasons. After nearly two years off from coaching following his resignation from USC (he was associate head coach briefly at San Diego State in the 2011 season before leaving to attend to personal family matters), Trakh spent the past six years (2012-17) at New Mexico State, where he went 104-80 overall. In each of the last three seasons, his Aggies posted 20-plus victories while winning the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships, and he was named the league’s Coach of the Year each season. His 2017 Aggie squad was 24-7 overall, including a perfect 14-0 WAC mark (NMSU’s first perfect conference record), had a school
record 17-game winning streak and it lost by just eight points in the NCAA first round to eventual NCAA finalist Stanford. That came on the heels of 2016’s 26-5 team which tied the program record for season victories and consecutive wins (15). That year, he became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2015 team, which was 22-8 overall, advanced to NCAA play for the first time in 27 years, posted the school’s first winning record in WAC play (131) in seven years and won the program’s firstever WAC regular season and tournament titles. In 11 years (1994-2004) at Pepperdine, Trakh went 199-123, won four West Coast Conference crowns and two WCC tournament titles, captured at least 20 wins six times, and made the post-season in each of his last six seasons (three NCAAs and three WNITs). He was the 1999 and 2002 WCC Coach of the Year. He coached two WCC Players of the Year and produced Pepperdine’s first WNBA pick. His Wave teams had a 100% graduation rate during his time there. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Trakh coached Brea (Calif.) Olinda High for 13 seasons (1981-93), compiling a 354-45 (.887) record while winning four California state championships and six CIF Southern Section titles. He also taught English at Brea Olinda. He is a member of the City of Brea Hall of Fame and the Southern California High

School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1980, he was the boys’ sophomore team coach at Western High in Anaheim (Calif.). Trakh played basketball and baseball at Lakeland Regional High in Wanaque, N.J. He then attended Fairleigh Dickinson and Fullerton College, where as a journalism major he was the sports editor of the student newspaper, before graduating from Long Beach State in 1981 with a degree in journalism (he also has his teaching credential). Trakh was born on May 31, 1955, in Amman, Jordan. He moved to the United States at age four, living first in Connecticut and New Jersey before coming to California for college. His younger brother, Maz, is an assistant coach with the NBA’s Washington Wizards and previously was an assistant with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons and a scout with the Golden State Warriors. He also coached in the ABA, CBA, collegiately and overseas.

MEET THE COACHES...
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH | 2ND SEASON AT USC | GRAND CANYON 1985 Jason Glover enters his second season on the coaching staff at USC. Glover served as Mark Trakh’s associate head coach for the 2015-16 season at New Mexico State and has coached at almost every level of the basketball world. Prior to his time with the Aggies, where he helped the team to a third consecutive NCAA appearance, Glover spent three seasons as associate head coach at Utah Valley. There, the Wolverines doubled their win count from Glover’s first year to his third. He also boasts significant experience in the pro ranks. He was an associate head coach for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock, working with such stars as Candice Wiggins, Skylar Diggins and Courtney Paris, for two seasons (2012 and 2013). He also spent 2010-11 as a player development coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he worked with Kevin Love, Kosta Kouros, Anthony Tolliver and Sebastian Telfair, among other pro stars. He logged several seasons in the D-League as director of operations, associate head coach and head coach of the Reno Bighorns. “Jason has so much experience across the board, he really knows how to get players to the next level,” Trakh said of Glover, who will serve as his associate head coach at USC. “He’s worked with NBA and WNBA stars and most recently developed New Mexico State’s Moriah Mack into a WNBA roster player. He has great experience, knows the game and is excellent at player development.”

ASSISTANT COACH | 2ND SEASON AT USC | USC 2010 Aarika Hughes enters her second season on the coaching staff at USC. She was a player for Mark Trakh when he first served as head coach at USC from 2005-09. A 2010 graduate of USC, Hughes went on to coach AAU teams in Oregon before joining Trakh’s New Mexico State staff as an assistant in 2011. While working under Trakh with the Aggies, she was named one of the WBCA’s Top Thirty Coaches Under 30. She was an assistant for Trakh at New Mexico State for five seasons — helping the Aggies to back-to-back NCAA appearances — before moving to New Mexico as an assistant for the 2016-17 season. “Aarika is a Trojan, and I’ve been able to see her grow into a great coach,” Trakh said of Hughes. “She is a fantastic recruiter with a fantastic personality, and she really knows her Xs and 0s. She is a great on-floor coach and players really love her. She has a very bright future ahead of her.”
BLANCHEALVERSON ASSISTANT COACH | 2ND SEASON AT USC | AUBURN 2013
Blanche Alverson enters her second season on the coaching staff at USC. She was a star player at Auburn before joining the coaching ranks. As a Tiger, she became just the fourth player at Auburn to hit 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 50 blocks in her career. After a year as a pro in Spain, Alverson began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech, where she spent two seasons. In 2016, she joined Trakh as an assistant at New Mexico State, where she helped the Aggies to an undefeated conference record and on to another NCAA appearance in 2016-17. “Blanche brings amazing playing experience and youth to the staff,” Trakh said of Alverson. “She is experienced and a great recruiter who also stands out as a strong on-floor coach with Aarika. Blanche knows her Xs and 0s, too, so she fits in perfectly with Jason and Aarika to make this a really knowledgable group. This staff knows how to get the job done.”

ASHLEYFORD Director of Operations | 2nd season
Ashley Ford enters her second season as director of operations for USC women’s basketball. She previously served as an assistant coach under Mark Trakh for the 2016-17 season at New Mexico State. Prior to that, she was an assistant at her alma mater, Nebraska, for the 2015-16 season. Ford was the starting point guard for the Huskers from 2005-07 after playing two seasons at Cloud County Community College in Kansas. Ford’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Nebraska from 2008-10. She then spent five seasons (2010-15) as an assistant coach at San Diego, where she helped the Toreros post four straight 20-win seasons. A native of Fort Rucker, Ala., Ford earned a degree in communication studies from Nebraska in 2008. In 2016, she completed her masters in education administration.

Prior to his time at St. Joseph’s, Koclanes was a volunteer assistant coach at Dartmouth, serving an integral role in helping the staff with recruiting. Koclanes spent the 2012-13 season as director of basketball operations at William and Mary, where he was responsible for travel coordination, managing opponent film exchange, organizing and maintaining recruiting databases, coordinating community service events, and overseeing team managers. Off the court, Koclanes served as primary contact for alumni, family, friends and fans of William and Mary women’s basketball, while directing the team’s ball kid program. A 2010 graduate of Old Dominion, Koclanes served as a scout team player and a manager with the Monarchs from 2008-10, when Old Dominion post a 36-27 record over two seasons, including a WNIT Second Round appearance in 2010. Koclanes also was active on the club tennis team, reaching the 2010 Club Tennis National Tournament. After graduating with a degree in finance, Koclanes spent two years as a financial advisor in New York City. He also served as a volunteer coach at the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club in 2010, and as head coach of the Hooperstown Huskies AAU team in 2011. Koclanes also served as video coordinator for the Connecticut Sun during the 2016, 2017 and 2018 WNBA seasons. A native of Pelham, N.Y., Koclanes is currently pursuing a master’s degree in organization development and leadership.

Brandee Walton enters her second season on the USC women’s basketball staff, serving as administrative assistant. A 2017 graduate of New Mexico State, Walton played her collegiate career under current USC head coach Mark Trakh. An Academic All-WAC honoree, Walton graduated with a degree in journalism and mass communication. She was a team captain as a senior, she also was the president of the Student-Athlete Academic Council at New Mexico State. A native of Surprise, Ariz., Walton prepped at St. Mary’s High School.

2017-18 SOPHOMORE SEASON Moore increased her production from her freshman season, averaging 13.2 point, 4.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.9 steals per game as a full-time starter in her sophomore campaign... Her 165 assists was seventh most in single-season history at USC, and she finished 29 minutes away from setting a new USC record for minutes played in a single season... Her 89 steals was 10th most in USC history... Set a new career-high with 34 points at LMU... Perhaps the finest female basketball player ever, Cheryl Miller finished her USC career owning virtually every school record, including career scoring (3,018 total points), scoring average (22.3 ppg), career rebounds (1,534), total field goals (1,159) and total free throws made (700). Miller also owns USC single-season records for points (814) and rebounds (474). During her career she broke USC’s all-time scoring records three times after adding 40 points against Cal State Fullerton (1/19/85), 43 against Louisiana Tech (1/26/85) and 45 against Arizona (2/28/85). Miller is the fastest player in USC history to reach the 1,000-point and 500-rebound mark in her career. In Miller’s four years, USC went an incredible 112-20, won two national championships and made three Final Four appearances. Twice she was named the NCAA Tournament MVP (1982-83, 1983-84). As an athlete, Miller personified the joy of basketball. She was known not only for her tremendous athletic talent, but for the dedication and emotion she embodied as well. A four-time All-American, Miller starred on the U.S. gold medal teams at the 1984 Olympics and 1983 and 1986 Goodwill Games, leading each squad in scoring. She also has a place in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

A three-time All-American (1992-94), four-time All-Pac-10 team selection (the first player in Pac-10 history to be so honored) and the unanimous 1994 National Player of the Year, Lisa Leslie was everybody’s All-American. With 2,414 career points and 1,214 career rebounds, Leslie is the conference’s No. 4 all-time scorer and No. 7 rebounder (No. 3 on USC’s all-time scoring chart and No. 4 in rebounding). She is also USC’s all-time leading shot blocker (321), No. 3 in field goals (973) and scoring average (20.1 ppg), No. 4 in rebounding average (10.1 rpg), No. 5 in free throws (461) and No. 8 all-time in steals (228). As a freshman she led the country in scoring and rebounding, then became the first rookie in Pac-10 history to be named a first team selection as well as the NCAA Freshman of the Year. She added to her resume at the 1996 Olympics where she led the Team USA to the gold medal. Leslie would repeat that feat three more times in 2000, 2004 and 2008 in leading the United States to gold medals in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. A three-time WNBA MVP and two-time WNBA Champion, Leslie held the WNBA records in career points and rebounds during her career. She was named an All-WNBA first team (eight times) and second team (four times) selection in her 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. Also a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Leslie was selected as a Western Conference All-Star eight times with three All-Star game MVP awards. In 2015, Leslie was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

HIGHLIGHTING THE 1982-83 SEASON • Under sixth-year head coach Linda Sharp, the USC women’s basketball team entered the 1982-83 season ranked No. 1 by the AP, Sports Illustrated, Street & Smith and Women’s Sport Magazine.
• To begin the season, the Women of Troy earned 13 straight wins, including four 100+ scoring games. Among them, the Trojans defeated Louisiana Tech (two-time defending NCAA champions) 64-58, breaking the Lady Techster’s 59-game win streak. • USC won the Wahine Rainbow Classic Tournament and Winston Tire Classic. • In spite of playing one of the nation’s most competitive schedules that season, the Women of Troy recorded USC’s best season ever with a 31-2 mark. • With a 13-1 record in the WCAA, USC captured the conference crown. • In route to the National Championship, USC traveled more than 16,000 miles and broke 11 attendance records on the road. FIRST ROUND • Paced by the efforts of Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooper, the Women of Troy defeated NE Louisiana State 99-85 to advance to the tournament regionals. WEST REGIONAL • Against Arizona State, USC quickly built a 38-point advantage en route to a 96-59 victory. This was the third win over the Sun Devils this season.
• For the regional championship, the Trojans avenged an earlier season loss by defeating Long Beach State 81-74 in front of 4,216 at Pauley Pavilion. USC was led by the “Triple Threat” of Miller and the McGee sisters — Pam and Paula. All three earned NCAA All-Regional honors. FINAL FOUR • The Trojans faced Mideast Champion Georgia in the NCAA Semifinals in Norfolk, Va. Up by 13 points at the half (40-27), USC defeated the Bulldogs 81-57. Miller posted 16 points and 14 rebounds, while fellow freshman Rhonda Windham set an NCAA Final Four record with 16 assists. FINALS • USC and Louisiana Tech, the defending champion, met for the third time this season in the championship game.
• In front of 7,800 screaming fans, The Women of Troy were sluggish to start the game and entered halftime with an 11-point deficit (26-37). • To start the second half, Coach Linda Sharp employed a full-court press that led the Trojans on a 9-2 run midway through the half. Fueled by key steals from Cooper, USC took its first lead, 61-59, on a 16foot jumper by Miller with 5:48 remaining. • USC increased its lead to five points with 1:57 on the clock, but saw that advantage diminish to two with six seconds remaining. Top-of-the-key desperation shots by the Lady Techsters fell short, and the Women of Troy won the program’s first-ever NCAA National Championship, 69-67. • Miller scored a championship game record 27 points

1984 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • Advancing to the regional championship game, USC sought revenge against Long Beach State and dominated the meeting. At the Sports Arena, the Trojans led by as many as 30 points in the second half in route to the 90-74 victory. The 49ers were not able to contain the McGee sisters (Paula had 22 points, Pam added 11 rebounds) as USC advanced to the Final Four by defeating its WCAA arch-rival.
• The Trojans began the season with 10 consecutive victories, including wins over highly ranked Maryland, Tennessee (twice), Missouri, Georgia and Oregon.
FINAL FOUR • In a rematch of the 1983 national championship game and one of the Trojans’ early season losses, USC met Louisiana Tech in the semifinals of the Final Four. The Women of Troy struggled early in the contest with their own running attack, and were forced to play the slow and deliberate-style game of the Lady Techsters. The Trojans rallied with six minutes remaining as Cynthia Cooper entered the game and hit three straight shots and Yolanda Fletcher added two to put USC on top.
• Despite the start, USC suffered a disappointing road trip in early January, enduring successive nine-point losses to Texas and Louisiana Tech, then losing to Old Dominion two nights later. The Women of Troy returned to win 14 consecutive games following the brief losing streak. • In the final game of the season, the Trojans fell to Long Beach State 71-67 and were forced to share the WCAA title with the West Coast rival 49ers. FIRST ROUND • USC hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament and defeated BYU 97-72. The team was paced by Pam McGee, who had 25 points, and Cheryl Miller, who grabbed 14 boards. WEST REGIONAL • Leading to the regional championship, the Women of Troy earned a 76-51 win over Montana thanks to the scoring efforts of Paula McGee (22 points) and the rebounding of her sister, Pam (12 rebounds).
FINALS • Surprisingly, USC faced Tennessee in the championship game after the Lady Vols upset No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Old Dominion to reach the finals. The Trojans were the heavy favorites over 15th-ranked Tennessee, having already defeated the Lady Vols twice earlier in the season. • Despite the advantage, USC needed a come-frombehind effort the win the game. The Lady Vols entered halftime with a 28-26 lead and managed to hold onto a one-point lead with 7:36 left to play. Once again, head coach Linda Sharp inserted Cynthia Cooper back into the lineup. Cooper responded by penetrating Tennessee’s zone defense.

HIGHLIGHTING THE 1983-84 SEASON • The Women of Troy entered the 1983-84 season as the defending NCAA champs and ranked No. 1 according to the Associated Press. With the leadership of Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooper, both preseason All-American candidates, a lot was expected from the USC women’s basketball program and its nine returning letterwinners.

The Trojans sealed the championship with an 8-0 run.
