USA Volleyball Trying To Qualify For Olympics This Week Like

Mike Guardabascio | The USA Olympic Men’s Volleyball team hasn’t punched their ticket for London yet. The red, white, and blue, defending gold medalists, want to be one of the twelve teams competing at this year’s Olympics, and a big performance in Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid this week would take care of it. The NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament is taking place this week, beginning Monday May 7th and running until Saturday, May 12th. The United States will compete against teams including Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, with the tournament’s championship team qualifying for London to represent the NORCECA (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) Confederation. This is America’s first time hosting the tournament, and obviously Long Beach’s too. The US Men’s National Volleyball team features a number of local greats, including head coach Alan Knipe, currently on leave from Long Beach State and a Hall of Fame athlete and coach at that university. In addition to Knipe, five former 49ers are currently on the roster: David Lee, Paul Lotman, Scott Touzinsky, Robert Tarr, and David McKenzie. In an interview conducted shortly after the site was announced, Knipe said, “We’re hoping a lot of local fans come out. It’s exciting for us, and exciting for Long Beach, too.” How the Americans qualify through pool play Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week (all games at 8pm) will determine where they start in the quarterfinals, which will be held the evening of Thursday, May 10th. The semifinals will be May 11th and the championship match at 8pm on Saturday. You can check GazettesSports.com each night to track their progress and see when the next day’s game is.
