STATISTICS: Past issues of the Modern Gymnast have carried numerous research notes which have provided us with some picture of a "typical" gymnast. For comparison's sake, we offer the followin g information derived from official Olympic statistics : The average height of the Male gymnasts was 167 centimeters (cm.) or about 5'6ljz". The top ten all-around men averaged slightly shorter, 165 cm. (5'5" ) . The "average" gymnast weighed in at 63.6 kilograms (kg. ) or about 140 pounds. The top ten were slightly lighter, 61.7 kg. (136 lb. ). There wa.s little difference between the overall average age and the average age of the top ten performers, 25.3 years versus 25.7 years. In addition it was of interest to note that the yo ungest male performer was Makoto Sakamoto (USA) while the oldest was Josy Stoffel (Luxembourg). The tallest competitor among the men was Frederick E. Trainer of Australia who was 6' and the shortest was' Demetrio T. Pastrana of the Philippines l5'). Looking at the women, we find their average height to be 158 cm. (5'2"), their average weight to be 52.7 kg. (116 lb. )', and their average age to be 21.8 years. The top ten women gymnasts in the all-around competition were, on the average, the same height (158 cm.), somewhat heavier (53.8 kg. or about 117.5) and were almost three years older (25.1 years). ' . ' The youngest woman competing was Djamileh Sora uri of Iran (14) and the oldest was Sofia Muratova of the .S.S.R. at 35. Miss Sorouri was also the shortest woman competing (4'9ljz") and Salme Koskinen of Finland the tallest (5'7ljz") . For the above statistics and those that follow in the M.G. yo ur editor is grateful to Dick Criley (former P enn State gymnast and assistant to coach, Gene Wettstone and now a graduate student at CLA) who spent many' hours sifting thru and organizing the reams of IBM reports your editor brought back from Japan. In these statistics we have printed every compulsory and optional score as well as the placing in each event of every competitor in the 1964; Olympic Gymnastic Competition. There are many other possibilities to be arrived at such as team averages, high and low men averages, team consistency etc. Dick will be working on more statistics for the next edition. In the meantime maybe you can figure out many stimulating statistics and " what if's" for yo ur own use until then .

QUESTIONS and POINTERS AJtf'

~ Dear Gymnast, Up to date I have primarily explained or analyzed individual movements that are performed within a gymnastic routine. However, I cannot stress too highly the import· ance of the total exercise. The tota l presen· tation is much more significant than any individual part of it. For instan ce, a performer might have one or t wo original or outstanding movements within his routine that he does superbly, but with a lack of continuity or fluidity h e will not score high because the routine becomes jarring to our e sthe tic senses (even though it contains parts of extreme difficulty, or perfection). The gymnast must r ealize that only by constant r e petition of the complete routines is h e capable of demonstrating an o utstanding exercise each and every time he performs. The gymnasts in the United States on every level are far too in con sistent. We can learn from dancers or from many differ ent types of acrobatic acts, that con cen tration, complete rou tines, build con sis tency. Repetition allows for the r efin ement of each segmen t of the routine since it becomes a habit pattern. When the routine is committed to habit the gymnast can con centrate more thorou g hly and competently on form, execution, finess, and the quality of every part of the routine. In the Tokyo Olympics the gymnasts that perfor'm ed the best came from a system of training whereby they worked their ro utin e consistently and r eptitiously. The Russian gymnas ts, Titov and Shakline w ere p erforming routin es that they have performed sin ce 1957 with only very slig ht modifications. Titov's horizontal bar r outine was exactly the same as the on e he performed in the 1958 World Champion shi ps. The teams, namely: Japan, Russia, G ermany, and Poland; had obviously been well acquainte d with the routines they perform ed in the Olympics. Their consistency in going th rou gh their r outines garnered them the first four team places respectively. Sincerely, Art Shurlock P.S. A nd they all performed as a t eam, in · cl udin g the ir officials.
