Sixty plus display tables featured information on programs available at USAG-M and the City of Doral. Several universities attended, along with the United States Passport Office and other government agencies. An interlocal agreement was signed by the Garrison Manager, Andy Bird, and City of Doral Mayor, Luigi Boria. This agreement with the City of Doral is beneficial to the command, as it gives the employees of USSOUTHCOM and USAG-M the authorization to utilize the City’s outdoor/indoor recreational facilities. Family and MWR has been receiving a lot of positive feedback from customers and participants. We hope to provide this command event again next year.

The Black Archives Presents “Lyric Live” September 4. Lyric Live” is a monthly Apollo-styled amateur night showcase presented by the Black Archives.

“Lyric Live” is currently hosted by local comedian Chello, accompanied by DJ K-Chin, and the house band, Jody Hill and Deep Fried Funk. The show features a twist on the Amateur Night at the Apollo feel, by adding the distinctly local flavor of the Showtyme Junkanoo Band in lieu of the “Sandman.” The audience is the judge, as winners compete for a cash prize each month and for a slot in the “Lyric Live All Star” season ending show. The “Lyric Live” program is held in conjunction with the Folklife Friday Festival, a community festival held adjacent to the Lyric Complex on the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall every first Friday of the month. “Lyric Live” is a platform for up-and-coming amateur performers to increase their exposure to a broader audience, as well as to evaluate and strengthen their art. FAMILY SUPPORT NEWS What to do if personal information is lost or stolen Social Security Number If a company or organization that is responsible for exposing your personal information offers you free credit monitoring, take advantage of it. Get your free credit reports from annualcreditreport.com. Check for any accounts or charges you don’t recognize. Consider placing a credit freeze on your credit files at www.consumer.ftc.gov/ articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs. A credit freeze makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name. If you place a credit freeze, be ready to take a few extra steps the next time you apply for a new credit card or cell phone – or any service that requires a credit check. If you decide not to place a credit freeze, at least consider placing a fraud alert on your credit files (info at above website). Try to file your taxes early — before a scammer can. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job. Respond right away to letters from the IRS.

Check your account for any charges that you don’t recognize.

FAMILY SUPPORT NEWS Have you considered the Riley Guide? Those seeking employment should consider using “The Riley Guide”. This resource is an excellent resource that contains valuable employment information, along with other essential employment and career related information. It is intended to serve you in two unique ways: 1. It is a directory of employment and career information sources and services on the internet. 2. It provides instruction for job seekers and recruiters on how to use the internet to their best advantage What the Riley Guide is not: The Riley Guide is not a place to post job announcements nor resumes. There are hundreds of places that will do that for you when using the guide. Why the Riley Guide looks like it does: The Riley Guide is purposely simple with minimal graphics. It is not flashy or incredibly visually attractive to some, but it is usable by everyone. Where to Find the Riley Guide: Visit: http:// www.rileyguide.com. Techniques to Consider for Identifying Potential Careers Discover Your Desires Examine your personal hobbies and interests as a possible career path. Often working in an area of personal desire can lead to meaningful and

fulfilling careers when combined with current skills, knowledge, and abilities. The goal is to identify some of your personal interests and investigate them a little deeper. Once you have identified that information, you can couple it with other things you’ve learned about yourself from previous sessions and can begin to apply this knowledge to identify possible positions that integrate all of these elements. These potential careers may be outside of your current pattern. As you progress through this process you will soon identify possible career opportunities, companies and industries that can offer personal meaning. Almost everybody likes to do something. Even the quirkiest codgers have something in their life that can make them smile. The intent is to discover ways to open some doors and consider new areas that might offer you a great work experience.

If the answers to any of these questions point to a dead-end for that desire becoming a career path, then realize it is okay. There is nothing wrong with maintaining a desire as a hobby and getting paid to do something else that you enjoy.

Additional Techniques for Identifying Potential Careers Technique: Imagine yourself in the future. Imagine yourself five, ten, and twenty-five years from now. Dream big! Imagine your ideal position, not what you realistically think you might end up doing. Technique: Write or tell someone what you imagine. This may mean sitting down, picturing a huge television screen in front of your eyes and convincing yourself to create the TV show of your life. Or, it might mean noticing the daydreams that you tend to devalue. You may be imagining the things that are the true desires of your heart, and your purpose might be in those wishes.

Technique: Another great idea is to develop a mission statement for your life. List your core values and what you want to contribute to the world. What legacy do you want to leave behind? What would you like to change? Are there people you have served who are grateful for what you Although, not all individual desires are suited did for them? to careers, these interests can provide a great starting point for your direction. This Technique: Think about your answer to this determination takes some investigation into question, “If you knew you could not fail, had the markets and potential jobs involving that desire. resources you needed, and were supported by your family, friends and community, what would Here are six questions you must ask yourself: you do?” • • • •

Does this involve starting a business? Am I aware of what this will entail? Is this something I am well suited to do? Will I still enjoy my desire if I have to work with it 24/7? • Is it likely that people will pay me for this? • Is there a demand for it in the market, or could I demonstrate that demand?

For additional exploration on “Potential Careers” contact the Employment Readiness Program at 305. 437.2639, or email joe.pagan1.civ@mail.mil to speak with Joe. Together you can brainstorm some of your creative ideas. Who knows, this may very well turn into your next great profitable venture or occupation!

WHAT’S UP IN MWR? The Family and Morale, Wellness and Recreation (FMWR) Fitness Center hosted their first Body Building/Physique Competition on 1 August, 2015 in the fitness center. The categories were bodybuilding, bikini and physique. The bodybuilders appear in lineups doing specified poses, and later perform individual posing routines. All contestants posed for a panel of judges who rank competitors based on criteria such as symmetry, muscularity and conditioning.

Brad Gilmer - 3rd place Masters Men’s Physique Antoine Brookes - 3rd place Class B Open Men’s Physique Many thanks to our generous sponsors for supporting this event! The Department of Defense does not endorse the sponsors.

The physique category is relatively new, beginning in about 2011 in the bodybuilding circuit. Although it was met with jokes and criticism at first, it’s since become a legitimate division especially among some great athletes. In the physique division, judges look for fit contestants who display proper shape and symmetry combined with muscularity and overall condition. This is not like bodybuilding so, extreme muscularity is marked down. The bikini division is about looking good in a bikini with not so visible muscles, as those competing in bodybuilding and physique. Their muscles are not as defined, yet their bodies are well-toned. Approximately 20 contestants participated in the FMWR Fitness Center Bodybuilding and Physique competition, four of whom work here at the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) and one active duty Marine recruiter. The competition was close and all the participants looked fabulously fit. Congratulations to all the participants. The show was a great success and we hope to host another show next year. ilitary OneSource provides great information for Special Needs Families online at http://www.militaryonesource.mil/family-and-relationships/specialneeds?content_id=282377.

The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For additional information, contact Army Community Service at 305.437.2644 or one of the Zip Code Group Coordinators listed below:
