That is exactly what we did at the Command with some delicious traditional German cuisine, Oktoberfest Beer and an Ommpapa band that entertained all during the event.

To set the tone, the fitness center was decorated like a Munich Fest. More than 500 people attended the event and enjoyed a cold beer and snacks provided by our generous sponsors who also enabled Family and MWR to provide the meal free of charge for all our active duty military members. Everyone who attended the event was very pleased with the food, drinks and entertainment but most of all a chance to break away from the office stress and enjoy time socializing with coworkers and friends. The next quarterly event will be the Holiday Celebration on December 2. Many thanks to our sponsors. The Department of Defense does not endorse the sponsors.

Dollars & $ense - Financial Limitations This month’s article, which is my first, is all about financial limitations and your ability to overcome these limitations. Military personal of all ranks Samuel D Coston, Financial have told this Readiness Advisor “Old Hand” at saving and investing that they just cannot figure out how to save and invest. I have never said this to a client, but that excuse is just a bunch of “Hogwash!” As a PFC/E-3 with a spouse and son, (we) were able to save $50 a month in 1984, and in 1984, $50 was a lot of money. On numerous occasions, I have asked Soldiers earning approximately $1,700 a month, living in the barracks and eating in the dining facility, to

have to guess. Whether your limitations are emotional, physical, or dealing with spending like a drunken sailor, nothing personal sailors, you know what is causing the cracks in your Fact, the Blue Bar, Blue Goose, and other clubs will windshield! start saving up to $500 a month. These Soldiers have looked me straight in my eyes and stated, “You want me to survive in Italy with only $1,200 a month! survive without your weekly contribution to their overpriced entertainment. Every member of our exclusive military community needs to start reducing their debt, increasing their emergency savings, and then pursuit pleasure activities. Becoming debtfree requires delaying certain pleasure activities

On a number of occasions, Ms. Vickie DuBois, our exceptional USAG-Miami Army Community Service (ACS) Director, has asked this “Old Warrior” and “Financial Counselor/Advisor” if military personal are listening? All I can say is, “They see my lips moving, they hear sounds, but only a limited few are data processing.” Finally, please do not accept things as they are, do not complain, do not feel sorry for yourself, and please do not opt out, because financial prosperity is achievable and begins with you deciding what is important! Some people say I am very frugal when it comes to spending my limited funds and they are correct! The money you earn is your money, and if your entire check is used to pay debts because you want to keep up with the Kardashians or the Joneses, then you need a “financial hug.” For example, somewhere between the MercedesBenzes my spouse wants, and the Kia Rio I want, is the right car for the Coston family. “Know what you owe and Know why you owe it! n Sunday 26 September 2,200 triathletes competed along a unique South Florida Course in the 2016 Escape to Miami Triathlon.

The Escape to Miami Triathlon is regarded by many as one of the premiere triathlons in the state of Florida. Typically, this event sells out at 2,150 participants each year due to its distinctive and intense course combined with great perks. This international race kicked off shortly after sunrise beginning with the Olympic distance competition. Participants of the Olympic distance departed on a ferry and were taken to Escape Island where they were welcomed with tiki torches and live music as they prepared for their .9 mile open water swim back to the mainland. They then completed in a 25 mile bike ride and finished with 6.2 mile run. Many of the 2,200 triathletes chose to take part in the Sprint division, which is shorter and included a quarter-mile shoreline swim, a 13 mile bike course and 3.1 mile run. The Mack Cycle Escape to Miami Triathlon is the last event of the 2016 Life Time Tri Series, which includes 10 triathlons across the country. A

Spouse Symposium was held on September 20, 2016 during two sessions: one in the morning and one in the evening for individuals who work. The sympoisum was held to bring members of the USSOUTHCOM military community together, specifically spouses, to get updated information on select topics and to network. The morning session was held at the Conference Center of the Americas and attended by 27 individuals; the evening session was attended by four individuals. Maj Gen Plehn, Chief of Staff, opened the morning session and LTG DiSalvo, Military Deputy Commander, provided remarks at the conclusion. Mr. Andy Bird, Garrison Manager, and Maj Gen Plehn conducted a roundtable discussion with attendees at the beginning of the evening session. Topics presented were “Ways to Connect by getting information about programs and services on the Internet; Financial Planning; Legal Assistance; Miami Adventures and Transition Portfolios presented by Military Child Education Coalition. A similar event will be held semi-annually -- planned for March and September. The next tentative date is March 28, 2017. Suggested topics for March include information on programs and services provided by the garrison; spouse employment; programs and services offered by Military OneSource and information on health and TRICARE services. Since an evening session will not be held, we are exploring alternate ways to disseminate the information.

ZIP CODE GROUPS The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For additional information, contact Army Community Service at 305.437.2644.

ACS has two social work graduate students from Barry University School of Social Work who are interning this semester. We are pleased to have them with us. The students are: Hi, my name is Cristina Putnam and I am a graduate student at Barry University earning my Masters in Social Work. I am excited to intern with USAG-Miami because I have a passion to work with service members and their families. Growing up with Navy parents has exposed me to the unique challenges that military families face. I believe that my background allows me to understand what families of service members are going through and how best to help the family. I want to practice social work with military families so that I can improve the quality of life for service members and their families. I am eager to work with USAGMiami and better the lives of the service members and their families at this installation. My name is Vondolyn Harrell. I am a 27 year old African American who is currently a full time student at Barry university seeking a master degree in social work. I was born in Miami, Florida and raised in the city of South Miami. I travel to different States exploring the United States. I enjoy spending time with my family and volunteer to help people who are in hardship. I am a independent and hard working women who is dedicated to success.
