11 ACS DIRECTOR’S CORNER / SPOUSES’ CORNER / WHO’S WHO

United States Army Garrison-Miami Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation 9301 NW 33rd Street Doral, Florida 33172 Director - 305.437.2720

Coast Guard Morale, Welfare and Recreation and US Army Garrison-Miami Family and MWR hosted a Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Coast Guard Station Miami Beach. Eighty spouses attended the luncheon which was held to show our appreciation for all military spouses do to support their active duty service member. The theme for the celebration this year was “Military Spouse Appreciation Day: The Strength of Our Service Members.” Military Spouses Day was created by President Ronald Reagan to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of spouses of their Armed Forces. In 1984, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger established the Friday before Mother’s Day as Military Spouses Day. Each year, the US President normally commemorates this day with a ceremonial speech and proclamation. Staff welcomed spouses with a festive beverage, and after socializing, spouses were officially welcomed by Commander Jose A. Peña, US Coast Guard, and Mr. Andy Bird, USAG-Miami. The guest speaker, Mrs. Emmy Ligeikis, spoke about how she manages to provide support for her spouse, who is a veteran receiving

medical care at the Veterans Administration. Mrs. Ligelkis was presented with a plaque to show appreciation for her participation. Attendees enjoyed a lovely lunch consisting of fruit salad, pasta salad, taboule salad with baked bruschetta, barbeque salmon sliders on brioche buns, roasted chicken salad croissants and mini dessert pastries. Twenty-four lucky spouses were winners of the numerous door prizes which included a spa-day; yoga sessions; a two-night stay at the Cottages in Marathon, Florida; local hotel stays and several VISA gift cards. Many thanks to all of the generous sponsors of the event: Conrad Miami; Courtyard by Marriott Miami West/Florida Turnpike; Dharma Holistic Center; Francine Roh, Massage Therapist; Hampton Inn & Suites; Hilton Miami Airport; Holiday Inn/Staybridge Suites; Intercontinental at Doral, Miami; Open Clinical Health. Family and MWR will use the feedback we receive on this event to plan the Military Spouse Appreciation in 2016. We look forward to increasing the number of attendees and hosting an event where spouses from the various commands and branches of service get to know one another.

Creating Your High School Resume and Learning About Interviews W h i l e attending high school it is important to begin re s e a rc h i n g and planning on creating your high school resume and learning about interviews. For those interested in developing and learning more about these processes and are in their junior or senior year of high school mark your calendar to attend, invite other high school students, and get ahead of your peers with developing these essential career development tool.

High cost of high debt got you down? The solution is easier than you may realize! Getting out of credit card debt is not so hard, but it will require a little bit of discipline and some commitment, at least for several months until you get on a roll. The trick to getting out of debt is to not use credit. How do you do that? Well, simply by keeping spending equal or less than monthly income. It’s really not that hard to do, but you may need to adjust some spending.

Creating Your High School Resume Wednesday, 8 July 2015, 9am - 12pm USAG-Miami, Installation Services Center, ACS Classroom, E2005, 9301 NW 33rd Street, Doral, Florida 33172 http://miami.armymwr.com/us/miami/ miami-events/creating-your-high-schoolresume/

The first step is to review your leave and earnings statements and any other household income that you have. Add up your net monthly income so you know what you’re working with, and then add up your monthly expenses. Some of your monthly expenses will be pretty obvious such as car payment, electricity, mortgage payment, or rent; but others will not be so obvious. You may need to think carefully for a few minutes in order to list all the things that you regularly spend money on each month. Sometimes discussing this with a spouse, best friend, or accountability partner is helpful, or reviewing an online checking account.

Interview Workshop for High School Students Wednesday, 22 July 2015, 9am - 12pm USAG-Miami, Installation Services Center, ACS Classroom E2008, 9301 NW 33rd Street, Doral, FL 33172 http://miami.armymwr.com/us/miami/ miami-events/interview-workshop-highschool-students/

Once you know your monthly income and monthly expenses, you have the components for a rudimentary plan. Remember, the goal is to not use credit. As long as you can meet your monthly expenses with your monthly income, your debt will collapse by itself. You may need to cut some spending in order to ensure you won’t have to use credit.

All attendees will receive resources to include a copy of Quick Resume Guide Six Steps to Building an Effective Resume, or an Interview Guide when attending “Interviewing/Mock Techniques Workshop. Space is available for 14 attendees per session.

After not using credit cards for a few months, usually one of your accounts will be paid to a zero balance. Then, take the money you were paying on that account and add that amount to the amount you pay on the remaining highest interest rate account. This creates what is called a “debt snowball” and normally results in liquidation of consumer debt within 18 to 30 months.

To register, send an email to joe.pagan1.civ@mail.mil or call 305.437.2639.

Fifty years of Army Community Service

Fifty years ago, on 25 July 1965, the Army Community Service (ACS) was established to provide readiness and life skills programs to promote self-sufficient Families, safe homes and cohesive communities, and enhanced readiness. From 1965 until today, during our Nation’s wars and conflicts, our Soldiers and Families remain strong. On 25 July 2015, the Army will celebrate the 50th birthday of ACS at the Headquarters Installation Management Command (IMCOM) G9, Fort Sam Houston, at all ACS centers and at other venues throughout the Army. The Miami Army Community Service center has been providing Family Programs to service members, Family members, retirees and civilians since the program moved from Panama to Miami in 1997. Providing those services from three different locations since 1997, a wide variety of prevention, education and awareness programs have been offered. Programs provided by the Miami ACS center are Employment Readiness, Exceptional Family Member Program, Family Advocacy Program, Financial Readiness, Information & Referral, Military Emergency Relief, Military Family Action Plan, Military Family Team Building, Mobilization and Deployment Readiness, Relocation Readiness, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) and the Volunteer Program. ACS is always looking for volunteers to help at the Center and when we host special programs. Events hosted by ACS as well as the Family and MWR program are listed at the MWR.com website: http://miami.armymwr.com/us/ miami. Feel free to contact ACS at 305.437.2644 if you would like additional information on programs and services, would like to volunteer at the center or want to participate in the ACS 50th Birthday celebration.

WHAT’S UP IN MWR? The 8th annual KEYS100 was held the weekend of May 16 and 17, 2015. The race is a point-to-point event beginning in Key Largo--Marathon for the 50 mile race and Big Pine Key for the 50 Km race--and ending in Key West on the Atlantic Ocean at Higgs Beach. The KEYS100 includes four distinct competitions: individual races of 100 miles, 50 miles and 50 kilometers, and the original Florida Keys six runner 100 mile team relay race. The relay format is a lot of fun, uniquely flexible and easy to organize. Each team is able to design their own race strategy. The team decides how many legs each team member will run and how long each segment will be, subject only to swapping runners at allowable locations. Teams are allowed to make changes to their plan during the race. This race also has an artistic side — coming up with a team name, decorating the team vehicle, even insulting the competition. Another bonus is the unique, Keys-focused awards. Being able to compete in a 100-mile race without running the entire distance alone really makes the KEYS100 a fun and exciting team sport. This year several teams from SOUTHCOM competed in the KEYS100. Congratulations to all teams for completing the KEYS100. Joint Warriors: Finished 2nd in the Military Division and 7th overall time of 11:49:50.3. Anthony Perez, Erelio Mesa, Trevor Brinton, Bryan Hammond, David Terpstra, Ramon Martinez. Supersonic: Finished 4th in the Military division and 13th overall with a time of 12:29:44.7. Stephen Barber, Anthony Stong, Chris Muller, Richard Coble, Troy Lovely, Robert Wiltzius. Team RWB South Florida: Finished 81st overall with a time of 16:10:44.8. Gigi Huelbes, Alvaro Perez, Murille Dennis, Wendy Mercado, Briceida Casas, Aura Rojas.

The SOUTHCOM Warriors Soccer Team competed in the City of Doral’s Adult Soccer League this season from March - May 2015. The team was sponsored by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (Family and MWR) Sports Department. The Adult Soccer League provides an opportunity for community and professional organizations to participate in one of the most popular sports in the world. This is a great opportunity for all teams to compete, network, and socialize. The SOUTHCOM Warriors made it to the semi-finals this year. Way to go Warriors! ZIP CODE GROUPS

ilitary OneSource provides some great tips to get organized for a PCS move in their article titled “10 Tips for Getting Organized Ahead of a Move,” online at http://www.militaryonesource.mil/.

The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For additional information, contact Army Community Service at 305.437.2644 or one of the Zip Code Group Coordinators listed below:

Packing and moving can be especially stressful. A little advance planning will go a long way to help relieve the stress and help make your move as smooth as possible. Follow these tips to get organized: • Arrange for child care. Packing and moving can upset children and it may be difficult to give them the attention they need when you’re trying to move. • Take pets to a friend’s home or a kennel. They may also need more attention than you will be able to give on moving day. • Be sure at least one person is at home at all times. At least one adult should be available to supervise the movers and check inventory sheets. • Watch the packers and movers carefully. Make sure they understand exactly what items are to be packed. Be sure each container or crate is on the inventory and has a tag from the moving company. Have a marker handy to make extra notes on the boxes. • Check to be sure the condition of your possessions is accurately reflected on the moving inventory. • Keep items you don’t want shipped in a labeled closet, at a friend’s home or in a locked car. This will prevent those items from being packed and shipped. This includes your trash. You might also want to keep a box of cleaning supplies with your no-ship items so you can clean your home after the movers leave. • If van lifts are loaded at your doorstep, supervise the packing of them. These vans will be hoisted by cranes, loaded onto a ship and treated roughly. • Have coffee, cold drinks and snacks available for you and for the packers and movers. • Read all documents before signing. Be sure your copy of the moving company’s inventory is legible. Hand-carry these moving documents to your new duty station. • Check each room and closet to be sure everything is packed. You’ll want to do this before the movers leave.
