Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, along with the rest of US Army Garrison-Miami, moved, lock stock and barrel, to the long-awaited, brand new Installation Services Building on November 2nd. The Information, Tickets and Registration (ITR) Office is now located in a central area on the first floor, along with ID/DEERS, Transportation and Passports and Visas. The central waiting area makes it easy to take care of all your business in one stop. Child, Youth and School Services is located on the second floor in area 2091, as is Financial Management, Recreation, and Marketing, Commercial Sponsorship and Advertising.

Army Community Service (ACS) moved into a 4,500 square foot wing of the new building. Services include Army Family Team Building, Army Family Action Plan, Employment Readiness, Emergency Financial Assistance, Exceptional Family Member Program, Family Advocacy Program, Financial Readiness, Information & Referral, Mobilization & Deployment Readiness, Relocation Readiness/Lending Closet, Survivor Outreach Services and the Volunteer Program. A new addition to the staff will include a Community Support Coordinator who will work to make connections between the geographically dispersed and services available locally. Ruddy Arguello joined the staff on November 22nd. He is the new financial Counselor and will provide support to Survivors in the areas of financial management and counseling. The new fitness center takes us from a mere 1200 square feet to a state-of-the-art equipped 44,000 square feet. The fitness center has something for everyone, including a fully-equipped weight room with cardio machines, free weights, dumbbells and hammer strength machines. There’s a gymnasium with two full basketball courts that convert to continued on page 4

Auktion 392: Reclaiming the Galerie Stern January 18 - April 25, Jewish Museum of Florida In 1935, Dr. Max Stern’s license to trade art in Germany was withdrawn because he was Jewish. He was forced to sell his artworks under extreme duress in Auktion 392. NEW BEGINNINGS continued from page 1 volleyball courts, two racquetball courts and a sauna. Programs will include aerobics, yoga, self-defense, competitive running events, weight lifting competitions and health promotion events. The intramural sports program includes flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and softball leagues. Varsity level teams and competitive running teams will represent the installation in local, regional, and national events. The Fitness Center will be open Monday to Friday 0500-2100 and 1000-1700 on week-ends. Child, Youth & School Services, (CYSS,) primarily an outreach program serving the U.S. Southern Command family, will be adding a Child Development Center to its services. The Child Development Center will open its doors on March 2011. The facility will provide services to 75 children and infants through age five throughout the year. There will be a modified program available for school age children during teacher workdays, spring, winter and summer breaks. As in the past, CYS Services will continue to outreach to the community for child care, summer camp and work with district personnel to support our military children transitioning to local schools. We will continue to maintain partnerships with child care centers in the community through Army Child Care in Your Neighborhood (ACCYN) and Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood (MCCYN) programs. These programs are designed to provide quality child care to military-connected children close to their homes or parent’s employment. Child care in these programs is also subsidized. School Support Services continues to forge relationships with school district personnel to meet the needs of our military children in transition. Through our new in-house child development center and our partnerships with the community and schools, CYS Services staff seeks to meet the needs of our military-connected children. WHAT’S UP IN FMWR ? ARMY TEN MILER - Congratulations to the SOUTHCOM Family and MWR Army Ten Miler Teams! Both teams did very well this year. The Army Ten Miler brings in tens of thousands of runners and spectators each year. They travel from all over to come to Washington, DC to join in this race classic. The Army Ten-Miler proceeds support Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation, a comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of soldiers and their families. The race starts and finishes at the Pentagon, passing by DC landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Capitol Building. This year more than 700 military and civilian teams competed for team titles, such as the Commander’s Cup and the International Cup. Team 1 placed 17 out of 47 teams and Team 2 followed closely behind finishing at 25th spot. Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) OPEN TO ALL SINGLE SERVICE MEMBERS! The BOSS program provides opportunities for single all Single Service Members, geographical bachelors and single parents. The mission of BOSS is based on three pillars: Community involvement, quality of life and recreational activities. BOSS plans a variety of activities throughout the year to support these pillars such as the angel tree program, mentorship for elementary students, focus group in the Military Family Action Plan, trips to local events and attractions, comedy clubs and fashion shows. BOSS conducts revenue generating programs to raise funds to offset the participation fees for all recreation activities. Another successful season for the Family and MWR Flag Football team. So far the team has a record of 5-3 and are on their way to the play offs. Congratulations team!
On a beautiful, balmy Saturday, in November, more than 30 dragon boat teams raced on Biscayne Bay. Athletes paddled between the Miami Rowing Club and the Miami Marine Stadium in a series of 500 meter and 2000 meter sprints. Thirty-two members of the USSOUTHCOM/USAG-MIAMI team put in a terrific effort, winning two of three heats. The annual Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival promotes the 2,000 year old sport and tradition of dragon boat racing, sharing this dramatic aspect of Asian culture with the greater Miami community. Blain Reeves Excels in Florida Cycling Race Season 2010 Family and MWR Sports and Fitness recognizes Blain Reeves, Chief of Special Technical Operations, on his excellent cycling season. The Florida Cycling Race Season began in early February and concluded the last weekend of October, 2010. Since the racing season began, Blain has competed in nearly 80 races ranging between local Pro 1/2 and Masters races to the USA Cycling Master’s National Championships held in Kentucky this past August. Out of 80 races, 50 of those races were in the Masters Category within the Florida Points Series. Blain was lucky enough, with the help of a great team, to make the podium (top 3) 20 times with 10 of those on the top spot. In each of the three State Championships within the Master’s Category, he achieved 2nd Place in the State Time Trial, 2nd Place in the State Criterium and 3rd Place in the State Road Race. As a result of all the racing this season, Blain was awarded the Florida Points Series – Season Champion Trophy and Jersey, the Spring Season Champion Award and 2nd Place for the Fall Season. He was awarded an additional award, the Champion of Champions Trophy and Jersey for having the most consistent finishes in each of the State Championships. Congratulations Blain, on a great season!
Rewarding Way to Serve Your Military Community! It is the giving time of year! We would love to have you join our team. There are many benefits from volunteering. The Volunteer Program is committed to serving the Service Members and their Families that are serving to ensure our freedom. We all have asked ourselves, “What can I do to help our soldiers? Maybe provide gifts, books, or care packages.” They are all great ideas and our Service Members love to get them, but how about serving on a deeper level - making a difference, even more than you could imagine. Become a volunteer at SOUTHCOM. Join our Army Family Team Building committee and improve our installation and our Military Family. It’s easy to find a reason not to take up one of these volunteer opportunities; you don’t have the time; you’re too busy trying to make money; you are just a drop in the bucket and your time won’t make a difference; there are plenty of other people who can fill these volunteer openings. That could not be further from the truth. You are needed and appreciated! Although it may be true that some of us are so busy we barely have time to eat and sleep, there are a lot of people who can spare a few hours a week contributing to the betterment of others. If you have just a few hours you can spare, give some serious thought to our volunteer opportunities. 2011 SCCIM meetings will be held 27 January, 28 April, 28 July and 27 October (tentative.) Zip Code Group Coordinators disseminate information from the SCCIM to the zip code groups. All spouses are encouraged to submit concerns/issues to your area zip code coordinator. The purpose is to share ideas and make living in South Florida an enriching experience. Coordinators disseminate information from the monthly SouthCom Community Information Meeting (SCCIM) to spouses in their zip code area and present ideas, issues or concerns to the SCCIM. Zip code groups can organize and meet in a variety of ways, from monthly information socials to web groups, depending on the desires of the members. Programs such as music play group, 9/11 GI Bill briefing and the recent “Evening with TRICARE” are examples of recent collaborations between Army Community Service and zip code groups.
