matter how much the loyal students have loved this great and growing institution, nor how great has been the desire of some to leave our beloved Alma Mater, there always comes a time when every Senior must bid a sad and tearful or a happy and cheerful good-bye to our . beautiful campus, so dear to the hearts of all those who have a high respect for knowledge and beauty, and thereÂŁore the great desire of the Staff of this, the ninth volume of the W eh, is that this book may help to serve as a reminder of the happiest times in a boy's or girl's life, regardless of how he or she may view them at the present.

Lack of reserve strength, the neme'1s of Spider elevens for the past fe,¥ years, again proved the unpassable obstacle in the v~· ay of the C niversit.v of Richmond football team. This season, however, sa \\. the developing of a capable group of reserves ''Tho are expected to prove of great aid in fonning the nucleus of next year's outfit. Beginning the second year under the fir t year rule barring fresh1nen from competing in varsity athletics, Coach Frank Dobson found himself at the :tart of the season ''"ith a fair collection of veteran backfieid men, but vvith only a skeleton of a line, the main key in the Spider play. Nothing undaunted, he set to work vvith the four letter men pre:ent to build a neyy forvYard " ·all out of a group of V'\·illing but inexperienced aspirant.'. 'rhe close of the year found Richmond represented by as good a line as V'\Tas to be encountered in the Virginia Conference, vvhich, V'\·hile exceedingly slo-vY, vYas nevertheless entirely capable of aring for the continued line thru t of heavier foe . 1'he Spider mentor took his collection of players to V. M. I. for the opening tilt, following an old custo1n, ancl when the final ,,·hi tle had sounded, the Spiders '"'·ere beV'\·ilderedly clinging to the lo\\· end of a +o-o score. 'I'y,·o touchdo"·n scored against them in the first two minutes of play started th fire,Yorks. Thus you can readily see, dear reader, \'\·hat a stupendous problem \Ya · onf ranting Coach Dob:on at the outset of the year. Ho-\Yever, before the same season V'\·as over-but that's another story and can be related in its place. V. M. I. svYept through the state \Yithout a loss to capture the Old l)ominion football title for the second successive year, having probably the best team in the hi~tory of the in 'titution, so the Spiders had some con olation.
Wake Forest proved the next opponent of the Red and Blue squad, but for the second con~ecu tive Saturday the locals ·w ere held scoreless hy a superior grid machin . Continued gains Yia the off-tackle route netted the Deacons a I 9 to o decision. The piders " ·ere guilty of the poore~t tackling and blocking exhibited by Richmond pig~kin representatiY s in quite a span of year~. They seemed unable to get started and the \Vake Forest victory \Yas richly earned. The follovYing ,,·eek-end sa\Y an inspired Red and Blue eleven trounce Johns llopkins b:· a count. Captain Doug Gunter featured his team's play \Yith a beautiful dash through the Blue j ays' line \vhich started him on hi vray for a se,renty-yard race tenninating in a touchclo\Yn. ../\ !though the locals ·w ere for a short \Y hi le baffled by the aeria I ga1ne of the visitors, a rnea ns b _, \Yhich they tied the score at 7-7 as the first half closed, the: soon solved the puzzle and there after had things their O\Yn yyay. The t\\·o \Y1nn1ng ~cores came as the result of a continued
21-7
line attack. In the first Virginia Conference encounter, Lynchburg \Yas handed a 19-6 set-back in a rather Ii 'tles struggle. Both eleven . \Yere guilty of numerous fumbles, but the Spiders displayed a victor. f~ uperiority in every phase qf the game and had little difficulty in emerging th For the first time in the history of the co11ege, the Spiders journeyed to Emory to take on the povverful Emory and Henry eleven, holder of the conference championship for '28. Messrs. Littl john ancl Company very rudely re\Yarded the Richrn ond tea1n for all its trouble and travel by administering a neat and \\·ell-desenred 26-0 trimming. The locals started off in great fa~hion,
••
marching fifty ard to their opponent ' eighteen-yar d marker before losing the oval on do·w n . 1'hereafter, it \'\'a imply a question of too much Littlejohn, vvho ·wa here, there, and every,,·here at once, except \vhen he carried the ball and then he vvas not to be found. Despite the ovenYhelmi ng score, the Spider line played good football and gave promi"e of better things to ome in the future. vVith vi tory apparently vvithin their grasp, the Spiders sa\v an alert Roanoke tackle slip th rough and break up a kick on the five-yard mark, the ball being recovered by the visitors ov r the line and giving them the needed touchdo\vn to gain a 6-6 deadlock. Thirteen first do,vns \Yer regi tered by the local a against five for their foes. 1'he folio-wing aturday Randolph-M acon came to Richmond and after displaying an unquenchable fighting spirit v\·as downed, 9-0. All of the scoring came in the first fe\v minutes of play and although the Red and Blue ·were ,,·ithin their opponents' ten-yard strip no less than four tim s, they failed to dent the coring mark again. Hampden-S ydney came to the Capital City doped to ,,,hip the Spiders in decisive fashion, but ·w ere inighty lucky to ,,·in. Richmond piled up an eight-point lead a the game progressed and Red and Blue follo\l\·er \Vere about ready to stage a big celebration \Yhen quite suddenly and rtainly \Vithout \Yarning, one McCann, a ub titute, broke loose and tallied two touchdo, vns in the final four minute of play to give the Death Valley quad a 13-8 victory. Up to thi" point the 1'iger . had :ho\Yn nothing that the locals \Yere incapable of caring for.

The r 9 30 ba~ketba 11 results of the l niversity of Richmond team \\·ere far be]o,v the usual standard , et in the past and a glance at the per onnel of the quint gives the " ·hole ~itory a\vay. Small men all, the Spiders, no rnatter hoYv hard they fought, and they lived up to the reputation of the great teams of the past in this respect, couldn't get their hands on the ball \vhen they needed points. This inability to get po~session of the ball vvas the greate t single reason back of the series of defeats suffered. The much-heralded Rich1nond bid for another consecutive Virginia Conference basketball title failed to materia 1ize-and failed chiefly because of the above-named reason. In~ofar
as fighting spirit \\·as concerned, the Spieler. riv a led a l1 of their opponents. This splendid never-say - die . pirit, exhibited at all times, no matter hov\T big the disadvantages facing them, evoked round upon round of applause from Red and Blue follo\\' er . Of the five starters, t\YO \Yere sophomores. Captain Rus. ell Mann led the team, composed of Stuart Eacho, Louis Onesty, Lud Sherman, and John .A dams. Doug Reams also earned his rnonogram for the first time. The Spiders opened the season \vith a rush, dovvning the Medical College quint in the opener by a 37 to 26 score. Coach Dobson employed frequent . u bsti tutions throughout the en ti re 1ength of this scrap. vVa , hington and Lee \Yas the next team to be played, and Richmond's representatives, after putting up a pirited fight the entire length, V\rere forced to accept a 39 to 3 5 trimming. This unlooked-for strength on the part of the Spiders against '"hat ·w as undoubtedly the strongest team in the Old Dominion, caused Red and Blue tock to oar to ne\v high leveh. But, alas! the nevv . " .as too good to be true. Roanoke \Ya , clo-wned follo\\Ting the game with the GeneraL, but, although the locals captured the game by a . core of 37 to 22, they \\'ere far from being impressive. Passe. .w ere muffed and easy :hots missed \Yi th a disheartening frequency. Then came the turning point in Spider fortunes. 1'he dreaded came to pa s. Lynchburg captured a thrilling 31 to 30 scrap from Richmond. The game, played on the Hornet. court, \\·a a nip-and-tuck affair the en ti re route. ~T i l1 iam and Mary, ancient and deacll.\· rival of the Spiders, administered a

A . rally in the la . t t'Yo ininutes of play ·w hich enabled them to cut clo,Yn a fivepoint Richmond lead and then the heart-breaking five-minute extra period in 'vhich they forged ahead, gave the Y el lo'v Jackets the game. Emory and Henry took the locaL in to'Y for the first time in basketball history, \Yinning out by the clo . e count of 3+ to 32. This defeat gave the Spiders added determination, and the earlier lo~s to Lynchburg vras ·w iped out in a return ga1ne played here, the Spiders '"inning, +1 to 33. Bridge\Yater also fell victim to the Reel and Blue tea1n before William and Mary duplicated it. earlier feat and again trimmed Richmond, this time hy a 3+ to 22 count. The game ''"a a repetition of the first affair, the Indian . piling up a big lead in the final five minute. of play. Hampden-Sydney \Ya . played at Farmville and overvvhelmed, 33 to 19, in a game marked by rapidfire passing and accurate shooting of the local . . The Medical College cager. \Yere again trimmed, this time by a 36 to 2+ core. Randolph-Macon defeated Richmond in a return . era p played at Ashland to bring a rather unsuccessful . ea son to a close. The Spider. had numerou fou L a lled on them, and before the final \Yhistle . ounded only t"·o of the five starting men 'Yere left in the game for the locals. DEDICATION to MISS SUSAN M. LOUGH In the inspiration of a scholarly mind and in the feeling of common service engendered by a spirit of true comradeship, we find a relation that raises us above the status of master and disciple, and gives to us the mutual glory of friendship. -f To you, whose smiling Irish eyes have been a source of joy to us, and whose humor and true friendly advice have been a constant encouragement, we grateÂŁully dedicate this book, which holds within its pages the most precious memories of youth.

P "///////////////////////.
Outside Games Hockey started in as soon as college opened, and the freshmen were initiated into the intricacies of stickwork and rules even before the old girls returned. Varsity squad showed up son1e new talent, which filled up the gaps left by those who were graduated. The Harrisonburg game was the first of the season and vvas played here. It was an excellent gan1e, with both teams demonstrating good hockey. The final score was 5 to 4 in favor of Harrisonburg. Sweet Briar beat Westhampton with a score of 4 to I. One extra game was added to the schedule this year, which was with Farmville. The game couldn't be played on the scheduled day, due to a three-inch snow, but was played the next T 'u esday. Westhampton won a 6 to 4 victory. The gam,e with the Alumnae on Thanksgiving morning ended the season with a 4 to 2 score in favor of the varsity. The basketball season this year consisted of four outside gam.es. The first was "'rith Fredericksburg State T 'e achers College, and was a I 9- I 9 tie. The next game "'ras with Harrisonburg's strong team, which defeated their visitors by a 25 - 14 score. This was by far the strongest team the Red and Blue team rnet the entire season. The game with William and Mary Extension School was a close one, the Indians ending up at the largest end of a 29-25 score. The last game of the season was the one with Sweet Briar, played here. One improvement of this season over the last was that all home games were played in the Roger M ilhiser gym, and not in the Red Cross building. Although neither hockey nor basketball varsities were entirely victorious, the tean1s showed up well and kept up a keen interest under Miss Crenshaw's apt coaching. The scheduling of games in both sports with teams from colleges heretofore unplayed has extended the friendly relations of the college and has made new and pleasant contacts.
