Newborn-Ready Car Seat Guide Active Baby shared their top car seat picks for 2016. These are not only beautiful and functional, but innovations in modern safety and style for your new babe. Please remember to follow all safety instructions and local vehicle safety laws for proper car seat use.

MAXI-COSI MICO AP 2.0 INCREDIBLY LIGHT | $299.97

UPPABABY MESA MAKING LIFE EASIER | $429.99

presented by

At 8.6 lbs, this is the lightest premium seat in its class! MICO AP is rear facing, suitable for babies from 5-22 lbs, and 19”- 29”, and is super easy to click in and out of its stay-in-car base and attach to your Maxi-Cosi or Quinny stroller. The base itself is height-adjustable and easy enough to install and switch between vehicles. The seat feels luxurious, with new premium moisture-wicking, machine washable material, and tons of softer than average padding to ensure comfort. The Cozi-Dozi™ infant insert is included with the seat, as well. Most importantly, Mico AP uses advanced Air Protect® side-impact technology to provide extra head protection. Safe, but also stylish, Mico AP Comes in a selection of bold colours, and is outfitted with a beautiful canopy to shield little eyes from the sun.

We cannot rave enough about the Uppababy MESA—especially it’s incredibly easy, 10-second installation! LATCH connectors, red-to-green tightness and level indicators, no-rethread harness, buckle storage pockets, and a 4-position adjustable foot, among other features, make set-up incredibly fast and accurate! It’s a rear-facing seat with an infant insert, that’s great for preemies, accommodating children 4-35 lbs and up to 32” tall. It weighs less than 10 lbs, is compatible with VISTA and CRUZ strollers, and is an absolute dream to pop in and out of stroller and base alike. As far as safety goes, MESA’s headrest is reinforced with EPP foam, and the integrated design keeps baby’s head stationary during a collision, resulting in up to 4x better test scores than other premium infant seats. To top it off, it’s made with soft, breathable, easily removable, washable material, and comes with an SPF 50 hideaway canopy.

PEG PEREGO PRIMO VIAGGIO 4-35 ITALIAN-CRAFTED STYLE $329.97-$349.97

Here’s another rear-facing seat for infants 4-35 lbs, and up to 32”. Weighing only 9.5 lbs, it’s easy to transport between car and (Peg Perego) stroller, for a complete travel system. UAS and the “Right Tight” system make installation easy. Adjustments are a piece of cake as well, with a simple recline, and Tri-Zone Level Indicator to find the perfect angle for your child as they grow. There are straps to hold the harness out of the way when necessary, and SIP that adjusts between 6 positions, without rethreading, even with baby in the seat. A dual cushion system provides appropriate support, depending on your child’s size. A steel-plated back minimizes flexing and forward movement, and the energy-absorbing EPS foam, anti-rebound bar, and top tether hook all add excellent protection in case of a collision.

PEG PEREGO PRIMO VIAGGIO SIP 5-65 Safety, Style & Comfort | $369.97-$399.97 This convertible seat (rear-facing from 5-45 lbs, and forward-facing from 22-65 lbs, and up to 49” in height) has a higher rear-facing limit than many others. At 18.5” wide, it can often be installed 3 across, but still has a wide, padded seat tailored in breathable, easy to clean fabric. The infant insert is a nice addition, ensuring that baby is secure and comfy as can be. It uses the LATCH system, is easy to adjust, and has a leveling to help you get the recline angle set up correctly. Add to its description all of the safety features included with the Primo Viaggio 4-35, and you’re sitting pretty.

DIONO RANIER LONG LIVE THE CAR SEAT | $399.97 With incredible rear-facing (5-50 lbs) as well as forward facing (22-65 lbs) capabilities, Ranier boasts the largest forward-facing capacity of any 5-point harness seat, before converting to a booster for children 50-120 lbs. Diono’s SuperLATCH ™ system and narrow base make installation easier than ever, even when seating 3 across! Great adjustability, a spacious interior, extra-long leg support, cushions and memory foam add comfort. Deep side walls provide phenomenal SIP, with EPS foam surrounding the whole seat. The harness is energy-absorbing as well, and the steel frame has a reinforced headrest and sides. Extra features include a cup holder, machine washable and dryable cover, and the fact that it`s airplane approved and folds up for travel.

CLEK FOONF WITH INFANT THINGY NO-COMPROMISE $619.94-$669.94

You can feel really good about this solid convertible seat. With the Infant Thingy, it accommodates children rear-facing 25”-43” and 5-40 lbs, and forward-facing 30”-49” and 22-65 lbs. The UAS installation takes mere seconds, and 3 seats fit side-by-side. The height it gives children while rear-facing usually allows them to see out the window, and the seat itself is very plush. It is made with GREENGUARD Select Certified fabric that effectively repels moisture, stains, and bacteria! it has a steel and magnesium sub-structure, comes with an anti-rebound bar, and is reinforced with Rapid Energy Absorbing Crumple Technology and 3 layers of energy-absorbing foam for optimal SIP. Oh, and it’s recyclable. No wonder they call it “the mother of all car seats”

SLEEP CALM & Dream On It is common in today’s world to think that total exhaustion is simply a part of parenting. We think that becoming Mom or Dad equals years of wondering where the ‘old you’ went while you stumble for your words, reheat your coffee for the tenth time, and say to your friends ‘I don’t know when I last slept 4 hours straight.’ We want to tell you that parenting does not have to be filled with fatigue; in fact, with the right strategies both your child (and you!) can get the rest you need to live a healthy, happy, and flexible family life.

A routine is a wonderful way to create happy bedtimes so you can bond with your child instead of struggle with them. They should be exactly the same. Every. Single. Time. Consistent and predictable sleep routines for bedtime and naptime are vital so that your child knows exactly what to expect. Our recommended bedtime routine is listed below and should be 20-30 minutes long. The naptime routine is a shortened version of the bedtime routine, minus the bath and the feed, and should last about 5 minutes.

It is up to us as parents to help our children get their desperately required Zzzs. The first step towards giving your family good sleep is to accept that naps and a good night’s rest are crucial for a child’s development and are just as important for good health as nourishment, love, and shelter. Then, you need to develop your sleep plan, an outline of how you and your family decide to handle every aspect of nighttime sleep and naps*. The foundation of a healthy sleep plan is based on two key items that will help you not only just survive – but also thrive - as a parent of a young child who needs more sleep:

• Bedtime bath (no need to lather up every day, a quick dunk is fine )

1. Having consistent sleep routines 2. Knowing your child’s sleepy cues and awake windows

• Diaper and sleep wear (we highly recommend using sleep sacks) • Have a bedtime feed/drink** (don’t forget to brush teeth) • Read a book (it doesn’t have to be long) • Sing a short song (‘twinkle-twinkle little star’ is a great one) • Put your child in their sleep space while they are still awake Yes – we said it! Put your child down awake: no rocking, bouncing or feeding your child to sleep. Once your little one knows how to fall asleep without relying on you, you’ll see a dramatic change in how long they sleep. Being 100% consistent with your child’s sleep routines will help them become familiar with how to put themselves to sleep in every situation – no matter where you are.

16 • www.modernmama.com | VANCOUVER | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition

‘Sleepy cues’ are the tired signs that your child exhibits before they are overtired. The most common include pink eyebrows and the ‘million-mile stare,’ when your child seems to mentally ‘check out’ for a moment. Look for these sleepy cues so you can identify when your child needs to start their sleep routine. Behaviour such as overexcitement, high emotions, eye rubbing, back arching, and ear pulling are overtired signs and show that your child should have gone to sleep earlier. Remember, an overtired child is a child that has a very difficult time relaxing for sleep - and that makes for stressful family bedtimes. Watch for sleepy cues and give yourself adequate time for the sleep routine; plan ahead and be prepared!

An ‘awake window’ is the time period from when your child wakes to when they fall back asleep for their nap or for bedtime. Children – right from newborn age – can only stay awake for a certain period of time before they catapult into a state of overtiredness. If you do not notice sleepy cues in your child (which does happen!), start by following your child’s age-based awake window, which is unique to them. Start on the low side and watch carefully! Newborn: 45 - 60 minutes 3 - 6 months: 1 - 2 hours 6 - 12 months: 2 - 3.5 hours 12+ months***: 2.5 - 6 hours

* A newborn child needs to feed around the clock to be healthy. We recommend that your child be over 13 weeks AND 13 pounds before you consider rescheduling nighttime feeds to the daytime. ** If your child is over a year, consider having a feed (breast or bottle) before bath time. *** The awake window for 12+ months is relevant until a child is ready to give up napping, often around 3-4 years old.

www.modernmama.com | VANCOUVER | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition • 17

Implementing these core strategies at a young age is the key to moving towards a life of restful naps and happier bedtimes. Some children and parents, however, are at the point where they might need a little (or a lot!) of help in modifying a child’s learned sleep habits. We no longer have the proverbial ‘village’ of support when it comes to raising children so, if you’re looking for more advice for your situation, consider hiring a Certified Child Sleep Consultant. Sleep consulting is becoming increasingly popular amongst parents because a consultant can give you the answers and support you need - when you need it – and can provide you with a proven, customized sleep plan for your child so that your family can sleep calm and dream on.

Rest assured! Kari Wright, B.A., B.Ed., and Alison Ruks, B.M., C.H., are Certified Child Sleep Specialists and co-founders of The Sleeping Child who provide sleep solutions and support to families around the world. They are mothers who have faced the challenges of child sleep issues, have over 30 years of combined family health and education experience, and are passionate about helping you develop positive family experiences.
