Twitter: @MzNayBonman can increase your target audiences attention by still being yourself. In addition to branding, we have also featured some of the world’s smartest kids who are ‘thinking outside of the box’ with their talents. Who would have thought that chess could be a competitive sport? Or that a five-year-old would pick up on learning six different languages?

Thinking Outside of the Box

I

’m sure everyone is familiar with the term ‘branding’. That has been the evolving theme around this issue. From the cover story with Charlie Vox to the entertainment news on the Justin Timberlake’s and Jay Z’s ‘Legends of Summer Tour’. We are living in a digital, advanced and technological era; therefore, the way that you can brand yourself is much easier. The internet, social media, allows people to create a brand for themselves. Some take full advantage and use it to the best of their ability, while others tend to abuse it.

No matter how you choose to brand yourself, make sure to think of unique ways of how to do it. When it comes to branding, the key is to stand out in a positive way that is different from the rest. For example, Charlie Vox is a prime example of someone who is making a positive brand for herself, and she is doing it in a way where she is able to capture the attention of people in all age groups. She is very versatile. When you establish a brand for yourself, think of ways that you

Also in this issue, we covered fashion trends of the past....jogging pants. But people aren’t wearing them like they used to in the 80s and 90s. They are putting their own little, modern flair to it. The fashion trends that were ‘hot’ back in the day are several steadily making a comeback in full force. And lastly, there have been several wedding proposals this summer. We have an article by our veteran writer, Tamara Jackson, on a few tips that you should consider before you tie the knot. And congratulations to her as well on her recent engagement. We hope this issue continues to enlighten you, and please do not hesitate to leave us your feedback via our twitter @UrbanCentricMag or via email on what your thoughts were regarding in any of the articles. LIVING OUT OUD WITH MOCA/ ADVICE COLUMN

Confused Single

Have you been single for awhile, and now that you’re in the dating scene and meeting people, you just feel awkward? As if you been single for too long? Well you’re not alone.

MOCA, I have met several guys lately. It seems like everyone I meet wants to be in a relationship with me, it’s weird. A guy I went on a date with weeks ago hit me out of the blue to tell me he misses me and wants to be serious. The problem is I’m recently single and I feel awkward, even lame, at times when it comes to men. I feel like I don’t know what to do. The things I end up doing make me feel like a dork. I’m just not use to this single life or dating. How do I weave into this world? What’s considered dating today? How can you tell when someone is genuine? So many questions and no answers, HELP!!!!!!!

on a few dates determine if you are compatible with each other. If ever you feel awkward, lame or a dork then he’s probably not for you. One of the most important things in a relationship is being YOU. Take time to figure YOU out. Then when you meet guys take time to figure them out. It’s not a requirement that YOU must be in a relationship, it’s not written anywhere that being single is a bad thing. It’s better to be single and happy than in a relationship and miserable. I promise that once YOU know who YOU are, the rest won’t be so bad. Again, my best advice is don’t rush in and LIVE OUT LOUD!!!!! MOCA

Confused Single Los Angeles, CA Let me start by saying YOU are not alone!!!! This single life can leave anyone feeling awkward and lame. My best advice would be NOT to rush into anything. Not sure how long you were in a relationship but there should always be time to get to know the single YOU. The SAME person is actually DIFFERENT as a friend, a girlfriend, a wife, and a coworker. You need to understand who you have become since the last time you were single. Completely understand who you are today. Determining who you are, is hard, understanding who you are, is even harder, accepting and being comfortable with who you are, is quite difficult but necessary to move forward in the single life. Knowing who you are will guide you in this world of dating and it will ultimately help you determine who is genuine. The hardest part of this whole equation is the definition of dating. It seems to vary by person and the state of society plays a BIG role in the perception of dating. Wikipedia and myself seem to agree on the definition of ‘dating’ ~ a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by two people with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple. So, don’t feel pressured to be in a relationship. Go

Struggling to Settle

We all have qualities that we want in a significant other; however, if you have ever felt as if you will be alone forever because you just can’t seem o find that one that matches your qualifications, and you refuse to settle, you’re not tthe only one who feels this way.

Moca, I’m sure you hear all the time how hard it is to find the perfect mate. Hell, you probably experience the same struggle we all do when it comes to dating. I’m very particular about the guys I date. I’m not a gold digger or anything like that but just like most women I have a list of qualities that I look for in a guy. I know what I’m attracted to and what I want. I won’t accept anything less than what I deserve, I won’t settle. Because of this, I fear that I will never find someone. Being alone scares me even more than settling. What should I do?

Know your worth, get what you deserve and know that settling is not always a bad option. If both of you are willing to be helpmates and not hinder mates, then in reality you aren’t settling at all. So, my advise to you would be to take hold of your fears and turn them into what fuels your desires. I know you can do it and do it while LIVING OUT LOUD!!!

Ask Moca

Struggling to Settle Dayton, OH ‘Struggling to Settle’ if I don’t know how you feel nobody does. I don’t have a list of qualities per say but I do know ‘what I’m attracted to and what I want.’ Granted it can be hard out here but it is definitely not impossible to find the guy for you. I believe that God gives us the desires of our heart and if being in a relationship and being a helpmate is a desire you have then He will give it to you. The issue I have is with the word ‘settle.’ We tend to use this word often and in direct relation to finding that perfect mate. Why I agree that you should not accept anything less than what you deserve, settling is different. We all settle at some point, its called comprising. You see when I was young and new to this thing called life I had a lot of plans for it, I knew exactly how I wanted it to go, who was going with me, and what I would ‘never’ except. Then life happened and what I realized was expect the unexpected, never say never, and many people will go with you but your final destination will determine who will actually stay in the race. I’m saying this to say, you probably won’t find someone with all the qualities on your list but I’m sure there is a guy with maybe 7 out of 10 or 15 out of 20. At that point the choice is yours. When he comes into your life you have to make the choice to love him or loose him forever. No one is perfect we are all looking for someone to love us flaws and all.

If you have a question, concern or just simply need a little advice about a certain siutation going on in your life please send ‘Moca’ an email to mocasayz@yahoo.com.

FAMILY/ Honey’s Corner Grandparents should be the backbone, herd and problem solver to and for their children and grandchildren. To say the least, they are viewed at as miracle workers. I say that because they’ve been known or expected to have all the answers by both children and grandchildren.

Be 4 Real Granny

G

ood Day to all you beautiful and wonderful grandmothers.

I write this column on behalf of you all and myself in hopes of us gaining a better understanding as to who we are and we feel in the place of where we are at this present time. God

as allowed us to be present in our time on earth for our grandchildren, and the younger generation both spiritually and logically. Honey’s thoughts are that we can relate and have common interest. I share my deepest concerns and feelings with you Grandmothers all over the world that walk in my shoes and I in yours.

We’ve experienced the good, bad and the ugly that family goes through that at times can be devastating. Between the love and betrayal from our children and grandchildren, we’ve been blessed with, through God the strength to be able to continue carrying the torch of love and support. Sometimes we too hurt but that inner strength comes fourth and becomes visual to the point where our children and grandchildren, biologically or God-given, can understand that we are special. There are times when our children and grandchildren think they’ve experienced more in life than us, but they eventually come to realize who’s really experienced in life lessons the more. When the younger see this, it becomes a part of their understanding as well. We as Grandmothers have and demand respect,

12 /// SOPHISTICATEDMAG.COM

honesty and love that our younger people beg for in their lives. This creates a reaction even in our children that they change how they are towards us. We as Grandmothers carry an aura inw ard and outwardly that radiates so brightly that all see it and feel it. As Grandmothers, to so many we maintain a balance with sincerity, love, strength and respect that we deliver it with what our children and grandchildren need when they have to face society. If any of these words have touched you in any way with your grands please share them with me by emailing me at PureDHoney@yahoo. com. These are Honey’s thoughts. Share yours with us today.

Young Democrats Of America Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of The March On Washington

16 /// SOPHISTICATEDMAG.COM

W

ashington DC – On Wednesday, August 28, the Young Democrats of America (YDA) commemorated the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and call for the continued struggle for a more perfect union. YDA President, Atima Omara (VA,) and Black Caucus Chair, Randy Ra Shad Gaines (SC,) issued the following statements: “As an African American woman, I know that I owe much to the brave men and women, both black and white, that fought for equality” said Atima Omara, president of the Young Democrats of America. “However, the fight is not over. Inequality still exists in our country and groups are again trying to restrict the voice of African Americans and other people of color at the ballot box. We cannot and will not let progress be rewound.”

Omara is the organization’s first African American president in its 81 year history. “It has been fifty years since Rev. King gave his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech and America has come a long way to improving the lives of African Americans,” said Randy Ra Shad Gaines, chair of YDA’s Black Caucus. “However, African American unemployment is disproportionately high; they are still underrepresented in elected office, in college classrooms and in top skilled jobs while being overrepresented at the lower end of the economic scale. Rev. King’s dream continues and we work to make it a reality every day. As we work to move The Dream over the next 50 years, we do understand that as America grows and evolves that The Dream does also. Our Dream must be inclusive and bring all races, colors, creeds, and backgrounds to the table of brotherhood. ”

Jonathan Johnson: “Aids affects us all”

A

By Tamara Jackson

merica was introduced to AIDS in the early 1980’s. Initially, it was thought to be a “gay white mans” disease. Eventually, people from all races and sexual orientation began to get infected and many more died. Over the years, research and education has saved many lives. However, the fight against AIDS still continues. With the help of community activist, more people are becoming aware of AIDS and learning how to protect themselves. Jonathan Johnson is a graduate student at Savannah College of Art & Design located in Savannah, GA. He will be receiving his M.F.A. in Performing arts on June 2, 2012. Currently he is directing his thesis show, Before it Hits Home by Cheryl L. West, which opens May 25, 2012 in Savannah, GA. Before it Hits Home is about a young man named Wendal Bailey. He is an African-American bisexual male in his early 30’s. With its dramatic portrayal of Wendal’s two worlds, the play showcases the life of a man living on the down-low. After he is diagnosed with AIDS, he must return home to tell his family, including his twelveyear- old son. Once the secret is out, he finds support from the person he would least expect, his father. Mr. Johnson was inspired to do this show because of the lack of awareness he found in the Savannah community. “I started to realize that HIV and brothers on the down-low wasn’t talked about. It was so surprising to me coming from Birmingham where we are behind in a lot of ways but we know about it. I wanted to do a play that would touch the community in a way that would bring awareness to this issue. Before it Hits Home talks about a very scary issue in our community which is HIV and people dying, especially African American women.” Many of these men appear to live complete heterosexual lifestyles. They have girlfriends or even wives at home. “These men are coming home and passing it on to their women,” says Mr. Johnson. “This issue is very

important to me and it’s very close to my heart because I love my culture, I love African Americans, I love African American women and I also love African American men, so I think this play is a tool to get people to start the discussions. More than anything I want them on their ride home to say that I want to get tested. That’s the beautiful thing of theatre; it lets you see yourself without having to admit that you’re that person.” Before it Hits Home launches Mr. Johnson’s campaign for the 2012-2013 year, “AIDS Affects Us All.” He is planning a tour. His first stop will be at Bahria College in Kentucky, his alma mater. It will be a two day event opening with a play and then ending with a day of workshops focused on AIDS awareness. “AIDS is color blind. This campaign is to get people to realize the huge effect it is having on all of our communities and get people to start talking.” AIDS continues to be a leading cause of death in the African American community. There are many people like Mr. Johnson in communities all over the world who are striving for a healthier and safer society. Mr. Johnson is right, there needs to be an open discussion about AIDS in every community because it does affect us all. Start talking and get tested

In Brooklyn, 65 percent of students live below the federal poverty level; however, at I.S. 318 Middle School they have been ranked the highest junior high chess team in the country holding approximately 30 national championships. One of the students who was part of that team, Rochelle Ballantyne, now a senior in high school, was ranked on the top of I.S. 318’s list of best players. Ballantyne started getting into chess when after her grandmother taught her how to play when she was in the third grade. Her grandmother wanted to find a way to keep Ballantyne relaxed and to get her brain going since she was a really active child. By the time Ballantyne was in the fifth grade she won a national tournament and that is when she decided to take chess more seriously. She also won fourth place at the Girls National Championship. Her current goal is to become the first African American female master in the history of chess. She wants to accomplish this goal because in honor of her grandmother. But then after she died (grandmother), that really affected me because she was the one person that always had confidence in me. She never pushed me, and she always respected me for who I was. I have to reach that goal for her.” Next year, Ballantyne will be graduating high school. She wants to attend the University of Pennsylvania or Stanford. She has applied though QuestBridge, which is a scholarship program that has a partnership with those schools.

College Spotlight: James Ward

here is always a way when it seems like things are impossible. James Ward, 19years-old, out of Los Angeles, California launched an online campaign just a few weeks ago called “Homeless to Howard”. And in the nick of time, he has raised enough money to enroll at Howard University, one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Since launching his campaign, Ward has picked up steam across social media. Teach For America sent out a tweet highlighting Ward’s story, and rapper Common shared the link to the site, supporting Ward’s dream to attend college. The average cost of freshman year at Howard (tuition, fees and room/board) is $32, 165. Ward has received loans and grants to cover 70 percent of the amount, and he also tried to apply for a Parent PLUS loan before the campaign. Since the PLUS loan was denied due to his mother’s credit, he decided to launch the campaign. Ward has been homeless since he was 14, along with his mom and two younger siblings. The family has lived in his mom’s car, and moved between different shelters and relatives’ homes until they secured a spot at the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles’ Skid Row neighborhood in February 2012. He will be the first in his family to attend college. He hopes to become an astrophysicist or a genetic engineer. “We had a lot of ups and downs, but through it all, I’ve always managed to keep my grades up and help my younger brother and sister do the same and keep them on the right track as well as myself,” said Ward. “One of the biggest things I’ve learned from my experiences is that, no matter who you are or how scared you are, as long as you ask for help there’s always someone out there who is willing to help you,” Ward said.

Is 2face Idibia The Right Role Model For Nigeria’s Youth?

NN’s weekly program which focuses on Africans who have done well in their chosen professions, recently featured Nigeria’s 2Face Idibia. Well-known for his creative streak, soothing voice, and award winning “African Queen” track, he has steadily climbed the musical scene with songs that clearly thrill the youth scene. He’s the clear idol of many young men too. They look up to him as someone who they aspire to be. In clear recognition of his contributions to the music industry, he has become a well-known face with advertisers who cash in on his fame to push their products to the rest of us. While not taking away anything from 2Face Idibia’s talent and

2Face Idibia is a popular Hip-Hop artist who has gained exposure both Nationally and Internationally. He was worked along side some of the great icons in Hip-Hop, such as JayZ and Kanye West. However, some feel as if he is not suitable enough to be a role model for youth because of his personal life issues. It never fails with fame...your personal life becomes exposed and then people will begin to judge whether its in their place or not. ability to hold the crowds in awe, I personally do not believe that he should be the role model for young men and women to look up to. This, in my opinion does not make him a suitable role model. Speaking about it during the television interview, he dismissed it as unimportant. As far as he was concerned, the most important thing was that he was looking after the children and taking responsibility for their welfare. By the way, one hopes he is making wise investment decisions with his current earnings. Having laid this sort of pattern down as the norm for society to embrace cannot be right. I suppose the fact that he takes care of them makes it ok! Indeed, our youth watching that interview could also imbibe this unwholesome culture, believing it to be cool and get down to it.

Role models for the youth should boast of upright lifestyles and be above reproach. Knowing that so many look up to them, public faces should take forthright steps in life; they should be proud of wholesome lifestyles. Mistakes in life are allowed though it is difficult to see how one could repeatedly make the same mistake. Being wayward and notorious should not and does not make you a best-seller. Nigeria should stop paying homage to the symbols of a way of life that is blatantly wrong. Advertisers should not think about profits ahead of building a wholesome society which folds fast to real values of life. Laxity in morals cannot be wiped out by all the talents in the world. I see it as a dangerous trend if those who have not demonstrated integrity in their lives are being held up as the barometer for the youth.

I wanted to give the public a taste of who I am by breaking down my life, as well as giving them something that they can also relate to. After completing the EP it turned out to be more than just a mix tape, and more of a personal project. What are your plans from now to the next five years? To continue writing and to collaborate with more producers. I also want to get into acting and into Television. There’s so many ideas that run across my mind. I want to accomplish everything that is on my heart. (laughs) What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love spending time with friends, driving, going to the mall. I like to just live. (laughs). I love simple things like that. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you career be and why? (LAUGHS) Okay one is one that I would consider doing and the other one seems like it would be fun. The first would be a teacher. I love students. I was actually a high school history teacher for three years. I was more of a mentor than a teacher. I was able to keep the students on the right track. The second career would be a forensic scientist, like on CSI (laughs). It seems like a really interesting career and I love watching stuff like that. (laughs).

How has the transition been from writing songs for other artists to now solely focusing on writing songs for yourself? Interesting. (laughs) I never lost focus of being an artist. Some tend to get side tracked when it comes to song writing and being an artist. I never lost focus and never stopped writing for myself.

What is your advice to those who love to write and want to break into the industry as a song writer? This industry is definitely an interesting one, with no rules, but you can make them up as you go along. I would say do what makes you happy, and be truthful to your talent and the right song will make it.

Fashion Trends 2013

Emerging Fashion Trends of the Past: 90s Jogging Pants

E

By Joshua Scott

ach year, time and time again designers of high fashion, street wear, and casual wear reach back to the trends and designs of the past as influences of today’s fashions, or in some cases, directly insert the styles of yesterday onto today’s runways. One current style making its way from the 90s catwalks to the stylists’ ensembles of 2013 is the always flashy yet functional jogger pants. Originating from early 90s and late 80s, collections of the then popular designers such as Colours and European high fashion labels, Chanel and Alexander McQueen, the jogger pants serve as a comfortable trouser option for the young man who likes to put a premium on comfort in both a formal and informal setting, but still want to appear as a unique trendsetter to today’s followers of pop culture. This look also transitions well in women’s fashion as a comfortable, masculine, yet still elegant option typically worn in a similar ensemble as in menswear with a shirt or tank top in an informal atmosphere, or being accompanied by a dress shirt or blazer on a formal occasion. Jogger pants are typically made of a combination of polyester and cotton material to provide resiliency not found in any other form of trousers, while being presented on a subtle shine that is sure to catch the attention of anyone within Contiuned on next page

MODEL SPOTLIGHT

One on One with Shannon Roby

By Calvin McDaniel Sr.

A

s I continue my feature of Detroit models, let me introduce my readers to Shannon Roby. This beautiful, ambitious and talented model is grinding her way to a successful modeling career. It was a delight to photograph Shannon and also sit down and talk with her about her views on the fashion industry. First I’d like to thank Shannon for taking out the time to make yourself available for this feature. Can you tell me a little about yourself… hometown, education, hobbies? I was born and raised in Detroit. I’ve been here all my life. My family was constantly moving from the Westside to the Eastside, Romulus, Dearborn, Southfield you name it. I went to 14 different schools including Cody High School where I graduated. I studied Cosmetology at Breithaup Vocational School and doublemajored in Business Administration and Marketing at Lewis College of Business. My hobbies include writing, singing, shopping and styling (fashion, make-up and hair). What was your motivation to begin your modeling career? Modeling is in my blood. My oldest sister is a successful international model. And I always looked up to her. I was always fascinated by fashion. I would watch runway shows all day long. I would sneak in my cousins room and flip through her magazines (Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Victoria’s Secret especially), wishing that one day I’d grow up to be that glamorous and beautiful. What has been the most difficult aspect of learning the modeling profession? My biggest challenge was finding my voice. Learning how to choose which projects to participate in and what demands to agree to and which to refuse based on my ideal image in the long run. I always want to be represented in a positive light and with class, even if I’m showcasing my sex appeal.

As a model what do you feel is your strongest asset? My natural talent is my strongest asset. I can walk the runway, I can do print work, I can be a spokes model, I can do it all. Not every beautiful woman has this type of raw talent. Not every model is strong in so many areas, so that sets me aside from others. I know that there are so many demands on you in this profession, what lines won’t you cross in order to gain success? That’s simple. I’ll never allow a client to cross over into my personal life in order to book a job. No one project is important enough for me to compromise my integrity. So basically, I’m saying that I book jobs off my beauty and talent. I keep a safe distance away from the “casting couch.” What have you seen models do thinking it will further their careers that in your opinion crossed the line? Unfortunately, a lot of new models have yet to figure out their niche in the industry, so they sometimes feel the need to go straight for the “sex sells” concept. They see that the so called “booty magazines” get a lot of attention so they feel inclined to start there to kick off their careers. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done my share of sexy shoots and runway shows, but I waited until I was comfortable with my sensuality before I got into that type of modeling. My advice is to take your time to get to know yourself and your boundaries, timing is everything! There’s nothing worse than to have regrets in life. What is the major down side in the world of modeling? What annoys you the most about the industry? I’ll never love anything as much as I love modeling, so the harshest reality is that it’s so rare to have a life-long career. I dream of going from Cover Girl to Catalog, from Seventeen Magazine to being a spokes model for Depends when I’m older. I want to be a household name, a legend. I get most annoyed by the lack of respect and passion for the modeling profession that many people have in the industry. I live and breathe to model; this is what God made me to do! I respect all who want to be on top, like I do and all who lack the passion should step aside.

A double sport athlete beating the odds and succeeding. By Joshua Scott

What is your motivation for success? For basketball, it’s being part of a team. For track it’s to go to the University of Oregon. How do you balance school and sports? I balance school work and sports by doing my school work right after school. Sports allows me to be able to keep my grades up. What made you choose to be an athlete? What are your goals for your track and basketball career? My goal for track is to get a scholarship to the University of Oregon, and basketball is there to keep me in shape for track. How do you plan on accomplishing your goal? I plan on accomplishing my goal by training hard and practicing every chance I get. I want to do my best at every race so that scouts recognize me. Who do you look up to as a role model? I look up to Christian Brennan because she’s a top winner at Oregon and she ran two of the same events as me with the time of 23.43 seconds in the 200, and 52.12 in the 400 meters. She also claimed the bronze medal in the 400 at the 2011 Canadian National Championships at the age of 15.

Well before track practice I run a mile and before basketball I practice with my friends. What sacrifices have you had to make to be successful? I had to give up partying, boyfriends and I had to start taking better care of my body. Who has helped you improve your skills? As far as track, I have a friend who runs track in college who gives me advice. In basketball Coach (Michael) Anderson.

Mike Reed

Young, gifted and a professional boxer By Naomi ‘MzNay’ Bonman

ike Reed is a professional boxer, who was born in Washington, D.C., on January 12, 1993. Reed’s involvement in boxing began with the story of his father, trainer, and manager, Michael “Buck” Pinson. As a young teenager, Michael Pinson was involved in many neighborhood street fights. A family friend witnessed one of the fights, and brought him to Finley’s boxing gym in Washington, D.C., currently known as Nomis. The first time Pinson sparred in the gym, he outworked a boxer with 31 fights of amateur experience. He enjoyed the sparring, but not the conditioning aspect of his boxing training; therefore, he was unable to capitalize on his own boxing talent. Reed comes from a very athletic family. He has four brothers, three older and one younger. His brother, Tyrell Newton, had a successful six-year amateur boxing career, including an appearance in the finals of the Washington D.C. Golden Gloves. His brothers Victor Brown and Tommy Reid played football. Reed’s mother was a cheerleader and his uncles and grandfather trained in the boxing gym, but did not compete. Reed lost his first four amateur fights before he decided to focus solely on boxing, and from that point on he won his next sixteen fights in a row. As an amateur boxer, Reed won the 2005 National Silver Gloves Championship, 2005 National Ringside World Championship, 2007 National Ringside Championships and 2009 Junior Olympic Nationals Championship. He was a 2010 U.S. Championship Nationals Silver Medalist, 2010 National PAL Bronze Medalist, 2011 National Golden Gloves Champion, 2011 U.S. Championships Bronze Medalist. Reed was a 2011 Olympic Trials Participant, but fell short of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team in London. He won the 2012 Regional Golden Gloves Outstanding Boxer award. Reed has competed in Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Texas. His overall amateur record was 90-13. Mike Reed decided to turn professional in 2013, rather than target the 2016 Olympic games. On March 2, 2013, Reed made his pro debut at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland. He defeated

Kareem McFarland by TKO in the first round. Reed is a smaller boxer, but has skills necessary to fight well on the inside. His defensive skills, fast hands, and solid ring generalship help make him a well-rounded boxer. Reed returns to the ring on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland, vs. Ramesis Gil (Santo Domingo, DR/8-65, with 5 KOs) in a 6 rd fight. Keystone Boxing will promote the boxing card on September 7. What are you looking forward to on your September 7 fight? To see my fans that are coming out to support me. What are your goals between now and the next five years? To get my degree in accounting, so that I will have something to fall back on. And to win a major belt. What has been your favorite fight? My last fight (June 13). I was very versatile in the ring, and put on a good performance and defense. Besides boxing, what other sport are you into? Football. My first passion is actually football, but my body build won’t let me play. I’m a little guy. What do you like doing in your spare time? I love bowling. I go once every other week. It’s a family event. If you were not boxing, what would you be doing full time? I would be a certified public accountant. I am striving in school to become an accountant. What is your advice to youth who want to pursue a career in boxing? You have to be disciplined. I wasn’t at first. And you also have to be consistent because it is the only way that you will progress. How can people keep up with you? They can follow me on Twitter @YesIndeed_Reed.

Entertainment News Two Major Icons Make the Summer Legendary

O

By Joshua Scott

ne of the biggest highlights and entertainment spectacles of any summer is the high profile tours that take place nationwide featuring some of the biggest names in music. However, this summer all tours paled in comparison to the epic stadium extravaganza that was the “Legends Of Summer” tour bringing together icons Jay Z and Justin Timberlake for three months of the biggest shows in recent memory. With Justin Timberlake releasing his album “The 20/20 Experience” earlier this year to the time of 1 million albums sold in its first week of release and Jay Z releasing his album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” this summer with sales of 1.4 million in its first week of release, the concept of the megastars hitting the road together was a concert promotion company’s dream come true. Concert giant Live Nation capitalized on the demand for the artists with ticket prices for their sold out Rose Bowl Stadium performance ranging from $150 to $5000. Despite complaints from fans and fellow artists alike about the huge inflation in ticket prices, the “Legends Of Summer” tour played to sold out crowds numbering in the tens of thousands across America with the tour recently ending its run in Miami, Florida. The tour’s last show was a star studded event with stars such as Teyana Taylor, Justin Bieber and Beyonce in attendance along LeBron James making his way to the show by police caravan. To commemorate the magnitude of two stars, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake, coming together to bring music to the world, Jordan Brand released exclusive all red pairs of the classic Air Jordan 1, 2 and 3 shoes as the “Legends Of Summer Pack” with a reported retail price tag. After such a successful tour run Jay Z will now focus on his next album with megastar Kanye West entitled “Watch The Throne 2” while Justin Timberlake is set to release a sequel to his album “The 20/20 Experience” with a tentative release date set for November.

Who is Tremayne Benson?

F

And How He Turned His Life Around from Chaos to Inspiration

ew “pre-moguls” today can match the unrestrained energy and creative passion that Tremayne Benson brings to his multi-faceted career. Benson is the epitome of authenticity.

He passionately articulates musical lyrics that truthfully define real-world issues and inspire listeners to passionately pursue greatness. He reaches to the core of gospel, inspiration, pop, hip-hop and soul and unleashes compelling “hope-waves” that plague listeners’ hearts. Surveying the impact of Benson’s extraordinary life, his success is truly a part of his willingness to “Surrender” his life to God, the name of his new inspirational single. Even as he enthralls audiences with speaking at conferences and preaching at churches, Benson has never strayed from his first love, performing musically. After teaching a youth choir workshop for several local Alabama churches, Benson asked the participants if they wanted to join together and form a youth choir. After a summer tour, the youth went back to their home church choirs full-time; however, this was just the beginning for Benson. In early 2006, he gathered some of the best singers in rural Alabama to form “Tremayne Benson & X-posed”. Benson has shared the stage with music industry greats, such as Bishop Paul S. Morton, Pastor Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s, Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites and many more music industry greats.

lives in the University of Alabama (UAB) hospital. “While sleeping in the waiting room, several nights we were awaken by doctors to sign forms for them to perform emergency surgical procedures”, he said. She is still paralyzed from the chest down, but his mom survived. In the midst of this traumatic experience, Tremayne and X-posed released a gospel mixtape and the ministry began to build a noticeable fan base. “Unfortunately, some of the best songs are born during unbearable circumstances,” Benson said. This experience birthed two of his most requested songs, “I Run To Jesus” and “Surrender”. Benson explained, “I had no idea God was going to take my family and all involved through that life-changing experience; however, that experience re-calibrated my focus and purpose”. Benson was intelligent enough to obtain his MBA, yet bold enough to pursue dreams beyond his academic background. As the Founder and CEO of CoBlu LLC, he now has a home for his entertainment releases and a platform to introduce new artists. Benson seems to effortlessly juggle a variety of notable ventures while still finding time to continue his philanthropic work through his non-profit organization, the World Youth Association. Despite his demanding schedule, he still find time to bring Disney look-alike characters to children at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, AL.

His journey has been filled with great moments of success, as well as heartbreaking tragedy. Benson graduated from Auburn University on May 13, 2005, and he was set to start a potentially 6-figure income position immediately. However, on Sunday, May 19, 2005, his mom was mistakenly hit by a car. “I never will forget the moment I drove on the church ground to see my mom under the car and her face pushed in the dirt”, Benson said. He and his family spent the next few months of their

Sunburn! We can all get it. Sunburns don’t care if you’rewhite, black, asian, hispanic, or light skinned or dark skinned. If you’re human, then you probably had a sunburn right? And it’s hurts right? And you probably never knew of any easy curefor it until now, right? There are three foods that help with sunburn. Carrots Carrots have ‘carotenoid’ which helps to protect our skin against sunburn, according to Gene Lester, M.S. Ph.D., a plant physiologist with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service. Watermelon Watermelon has lycopene, which is another type of carotenoid. Lycopene is what makes tomatoes and watermelon red and may be especially effective at protecting our skin from sunburn. In a study, participants ate 2 1/2 tablespoons of tomatoe paste or drank 1 2/3 cups of carrot juice daily, in addition to their regular diet for 10 to 12 weeks and then they were exposed to UV light and they had almost 50% less skin reddening than those didn’t have the paste or juice. Supplements weren’t as effective, which is a even bigger reason to dig into some tomatoes or watermelon during the summer.

The Benefits of Staying Physcially Fit

By Curl J. Louis

n order to understand how to be physically fit you must know the definition of physical fitness. Physical Fitness is the ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and alertly with energy left over for enjoying leisure time activities and meeting emergency needs. Physical fitness is to the human body what fine tuning is to an engine. It involves the performance of the heart and lungs, and the muscles of the body. Now that we have obtained a brief understanding of physical fitness we will discuss the benefits of being physically fit, as well as giving you an idea of setting you up with a physical program of your own. There are several benefits of being physically fit as from healthier lifestyle, lower cholesterol resulting in less visits to the doctors office, even in some most people would like to think a better sex drive. For whatever reason you choose to get in fitness condition rather it is playing sports, getting ready to fit in your dream wedding dress, that summer trip to the beach, or doing it for yourself make sure you have the time and dedication and most important “No Excuses.

adolescents who are overweight has nearly tripled. Almost nine million young Americans, or about 15 percent of all children are overweight. Healthy lifestyles are influential than genetic factors in avoiding deterioration traditionally associated with aging. For children it is much easier for physical activity because they participate in athletic or physical fitness activities during school, running, jumping rope, swimming, and dancing. As for us adults it is more difficult seeing how majority of our recess days have been taken up with 9 to 5 days at the office, getting the kids dressed and ready for school, and just to come home from a long day at work with piles of paperwork, hyperactive kids, and having to cook dinner. So adults have to work around their kids and work schedule to exercise, but mostly in that time you just want to get some piece of mind and just relax with some nice slow music, and a bottle of Moscato.

Before you begin to exercise you must have the right mind frame, because just like anything that you try to do if you don’t have your mind set to doing it with the proper planning and commitment as your exercising will not go through as planned. Therefore to begin your physical fitness program you have to first put in your age, sex, heredity, personal habits, and eating practices into factor. After you have factored in all of that you need to figure out how many days out of the week you want to exercise, and how long of an exercise workout you want. Keep in mind starting off slow and gradually working your way up will give you better results. In the last 15 years obesity rates have increased by more than 60 percent among adults. In 1999, 61 percent of the adult population was either overweight or obese. The rate of increase in overweight among young people has been steeper.
