About ISK The International School of Kenya (ISK) is a private, non-profit PreK-Grade 12 school created in 1976 through a joint partnership between the governments of the United States and Canada. Nestled on 40 acres of a former coffee plantation, ISK serves the educational needs of both expatriate and Kenyan students who seek a challenging international curriculum which leads to the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma program. ISK’s internationally focused curriculum has helped Kenya become a magnet for foreign business investment and a desired posting for those working for the continuing development of East Africa. Expatriate families consider Kenya a quality career opportunity, in part due to the quality education they find at ISK. Likewise, Kenyan families who want an international, culturally diverse education for their children see ISK as the school of choice. ISK has over 915 students from more than 60 countries. Graduates earn an ISK North American accredited diploma and approximately 70 percent of ISK graduates earn the IB Diploma, enabling them to study at some of the most respected and competitive colleges and universities in the world. ISK students form a supportive, spirited and diverse community, which enables new students to adapt easily to campus life. Interacting in such a welcoming crosscultural milieu, ISK students celebrate the unique and wonderful differences and similarities of people from around the world. The value of respect for each other and for Kenya is evident at ISK, as is a commitment to giving back to the community. Our scholarship program for Kenyan students, together with a broad and dedicated service-learning program which serves our local and national community, have shaped our school values since 1967 and continue today. In keeping with ISK’s strategic mission and vision, we are dedicated to empowering each student to create solutions for tomorrow’s challenges. Therefore, we have embarked on a multimillion dollar facility and program expansion project to provide students and faculty with the programs, tools and facilities necessary for success. Once completed, ISK will be able to accommodate 1,200 students with expanded programs and facilities.

PTO Donates to Kenya Red Cross at State House On March 30, the ISK Parent Teacher Organization was invited to the State House to be able to make their donation to the Kenya Red Cross, thus, answering Her Excellency, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s call to help with the Kenya drought relief effort. I had the honor to attend the donation ceremony with PTO and school representatives. Each

group that donated had the opportunity to share a few words about their organization with the First Lady. The PTO Chair, Isaias Liriano, and I were able to mention various initiatives that the school and its parents are involved in for the benefit of the larger community. The First Lady was very appreciative of the PTO’s donation. She was also impressed when she heard about a

student group and their project called Hand Out. The Hand Out Student Club has been working, using concepts of Physics and Design, on the prototyping of a 3D printed prosthetic hand. The goal of the club is ultimately to be able to distribute the prosthetic hand to individuals in need in local communities. It was a privilege to share ISK’s service oriented involvement in Kenya.

The Annual General Meeting and Board Elections - April 26 The ISK Annual General Meeting, held by the Board of Governors, is an opportunity to hear about the activities and financial matters of the school. It is also when parents elect two new members to the Board of Directors. In addition to the Board elections, there is a report from the Chair of the Board of Directors, the annual Treasurer’s report and the School Director’s report. Take the time now to familiarize yourself with the Board of Directors Nominees (included in this Link) and then attend the AGM to hear directly from the candidates before voting.

and music. See details on the poster located in this issue of the Link. All proceeds from the concert benefit ISK’s community outreach programs through the Inspiration Initiative.

Under the direction of Shea Fleming and the musical guidance of Tim Willson, the students sang and danced to the audience’s delight in this wellknown musical. The production coincided with a striking MS Art display. Congratulations to all the participants!

GREETINGS FROM THE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The most recent Board of Directors meeting was held Tuesday, March 21, 2017. We are happy to report six parents have agreed to run for election to the Board. We welcomed one Board candidate at the meeting. The ASB Representative Shadwal Jha reported ASB shared the results of the student climate survey with student body. The ASB has decided to try out the house system to improve inter-grade student communication and camaraderie. Finally, he noted the seniors are beginning to move into the final phase of their career at ISK. We were pleased to hear a presentation on the Work Experience program from

6

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

High School Assistant Principal Jarrod Dale and several Grade 10 students. The purpose of the program is to allow students to pursue fields of interest and give them exposure to the workplace. In only its second year, this program placed 77 grade 10 students in different sectors. For one week students shadowed professionals in diverse areas such as law, medicine, advertising, computer program and engineering, statistics and education administration. Students praised mentors who ensured the students were engaged in the work. The students suggested ways to help companies new to the program to engage students in the workflow. All in all, the students deemed the program a success.

Doug Irish, IT Director, and Kathleen Chromicz, Technology Integration Coordinator, fielded questions about Hand Out, a club consisting of four High School students who have volunteered their time to 3D print prosthetic hands for disadvantaged people. The students hope to become an official recognized chapter of ENABLE, a community of volunteers hailing from all over the world and using 3D printers to create free 3D printed hands and arms for those in need of an upper limb assistive device. If successful Handout would be the first ENABLE chapter in East Africa. Jodi Lake, Director of Teaching and Learning and Doug Irish, gave a presentation on the

LearningBoard software. Since LearningBoard is still in the refinement stage it could be customized to help tie all the ISK Standards and Aims and other curricular work together in a single product. It also offers ISK the opportunity to guide further development of the product to fit the school’s needs. The next meeting is the Board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), April 26, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. We hope to see as many members of the ISK community as possible at the meeting. The election for the new parentelected representatives will take place during the meeting. Don’t miss it! Mimi Steward Board Secretary

REPORT

Thank you very much to all who came to the student-led conferences last week. We did ask that each family visit specialist teachers and I am pleased to report that all our specialist teachers seem to have had packed schedules over the two days. Students brought their parents to see what learning was taking place during classes. This was wonderful to see and hear about, thank you!

about any aspect of your child’s learning after these student-led conferences, please contact your child’s teacher. They will be able to set up a further meeting for you. Before the conferences, I was able to see all the hard work and preparation that went into ensuring productive and valuable meetings. Thank you to all our students, as well as teachers and teaching assistants who supported them.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDER Thanks to a small but amazing team of parent volunteers, the annual distribution of Scholastic book orders brought smiles to our students’ faces this past week. The team worked quietly and effectively, behind the scenes, first to get the orders checked and entered into a database and later to unpack and sort into individual orders. It’s a mammoth task which provides the library and our classrooms with free books each year, as well as giving our students the chance to purchase books from overseas. The team included: Isabelle de Laat, Hazel Jiwani, Nara Rosie, Samela Priestley, Preena Chandaria, Janelle Okorie, Julie Caron and Widad Abusada. EMERGENCY CONTACT It is very important that we have the name of a contact person whom your child knows, and that this person has agreed to make medical decisions on your behalf if the school cannot contact you and your child needs emergency medical intervention. It would be better if we had more than one contact person. If both parents are going to be out of the country at the same time, the school must be notified

COURSE SELECTION Course selection for next year is beginning for the 17-18 school year. Fifth grade, soon to be sixth grade parents, received information on class options earlier this week. Sixth and seventh grade, soon to be seventh and eighth graders, will be bringing home course selection sheets in the next week. Please take some time to discuss course options with your children.

PARENT TEA Our final middle school parent tea for the year is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25th, at 8:30 a.m. Our incoming principal, Alexa Schmid, will be at the tea. This will be an opportunity for middle school parents to meet and greet the new principal and learn a little more about her vision for ISK’s middle school in the coming years.

THE WIZ The Middle School Creative Arts Department provided us with three excellent performances of The Wiz. The acting, singing, choreography and set design were all amazing, and I believe this was one of our best productions during my tenure at ISK. Thanks go to Shea Fleming, Tim Willson and the Creative Arts Department for their work and dedication in bringing this show to our community!

CAPSTONE PROJECT On March 10th, eighth grade students gathered together for the Capstone Fair to celebrate the completion of their global issues projects by showcasing their learning to their peers and members of the ISK community. The Capstone is a culminating middle school assessment in which students complete an investigation into a global issue, create a product that effectively communicates their learning, investigate possible solutions to the issue and identify and implement actions that people can take to help deal with the issue. There were some very successful projects, and the level of commitment, empathy and passion in evidence was quite remarkable.

SWIMMING PARTY Earlier this month our sixth grade teachers organized our annual middle school swimming party. It was nice, hot afternoon, and the students truly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to the grade six team and our middle school parent volunteers for making this a successful and fun event. Our final middle school social of the year is set for Friday, May 19th. This will be a more formal affair, with dancing, a talent show, and much more.

SENIOR NEWS Report Narratives for Seniors The faculty have written final narrative comments for all seniors, in order to provide timely and actionable information in support of guiding seniors finishing courses and the lead up to final exams. These comments are now ready for seniors and their parents to view in PowerSchool. Students are encouraged to speak with teachers if they have any questions about the feedback or need additional information. Parents should email the HS office if problems accessing PowerSchool occur or if a printed report is needed. LAST DAY OF REGULAR CLASSES FOR SENIORS IS APRIL 26 After April 26, seniors complete final summative assessments in the form of examinations either following the IB Examination schedule in the case of IB Diploma and Certificate students or following the ISK Senior Examination schedule in the case of students doing ISK Credit classes. All seniors complete a final assessment either an IB exam or ISK exam/culminating task - for each course they are studying. April 27 is a day for senior study at home and exams commence on April 28. FINAL EXAMS FOR SENIORS (APRIL 28 – MAY 19) All seniors at ISK complete final exams in the month of May (either IB course exams or ISK course final assessments). Here are a couple of important notes:

14

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

• All seniors and their parents should have received copies of both the IB and regular ISK course exam schedules. These schedules are available on Moodle or from the HS office. • Starting April 28, transportation to and from school for seniors is the responsibility of parents. The school will release seniors from school immediately after they have finished their exams for the day, regardless of the time. Any parent who does not want the school to release their child before 3:20 pm should contact the high school office by April 26. Buses will run at normal times, and seniors who are signed up to ride the bus are welcome to use the bus (May 1 is a public holiday, so no buses will run this day and parents must arrange private transportation). A COUPLE OTHER ITEMS IN APRIL FOR YOUR DIARIES: Please pay particular attention to the fact that the Group Graduation Photograph for the Class of 2017 will take place on April 26 with Individual Graduation Photos taking place on April 19 (this plan is a refinement of what was originally stated in a letter to senior parents; seniors traveling to ISSEA this month will be able to take their individual graduation photograph on April 26). • Individual Graduation Photographs take place April 19 starting at 1:30 (we will be done by 5 pm though students may leave campus once the group and their individual photo is done)

• 12th grade Off to College & Visa Night is April 24 • Last day of regular classes for seniors & Graduation Class of 2017 Group Photograph is April 26 • Graduation Photo Order Form and Payment due by April 28 GENERAL HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION Thank you to the parents who attended our recent Parent-Student-Teacher conferences as well as our final HS Parent Tea of the year. Our focus in the Tea was on: • A presentation of the integrated Health and Physical Education Program, followed by Q&A • The Experiential Learning program, including two grade 10 students sharing their experiences in the work place as part of grade 10 work experience. • The high school Instructional Schedule for 2017-18, sharing how the school is looking at making adjustments in line with our educational aims and feedback from the recent IB self-study process. • The ISK Virtual Learning Plan (VLP) high school update with a reminder to attend the full session on our VLP at the Director’s Tea. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE EXAMS FOR SOME JUNIORS (APRIL 28 - MAY 19): • There are regular classes for all 11th graders, including those taking an IB examination, during the IB exam period, except that an IB junior student is not

required to attend other high school classes the day before or the day of an IB exam (allowing time to study for and sit the exam) - a junior who has an exam on a Monday is NOT allowed the previous Friday off of school. • During IB exams, the school will release juniors from school immediately after they have finished an IB exam for the day, regardless of the time. Any parent who does not want the school to release their child before 3:20 pm should contact the high school office in advance of April 26. Hands are used consciously more than any other part of the body. The most menial everyday tasks require the use of a hand, sometimes two. Life is not impossible without them, but it is certainly much simpler with them. This is the reason behind Hand Out, a new club at ISK that has partnered with the e-NABLE Community, to assemble 3D-printed prosthetic hands for individuals in underprivileged communities who need them. The e-NABLE Community is a global network of individuals who use 3D printers to produce hands for those in need. Members of this network, set up in different locations worldwide, are

16

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

known as chapters. In order to become an e-NABLE chapter, a group must build a prototype hand and obtain approval from the community. Mr. Mackrory and Mr. Sudra recruited four students in February to create a hand using the school’s thennew 3D printer. (Which was purchased using donations to last year’s Annual Fund). Our hope is to eventually become an e-NABLE chapter. The group has succeeded in printing and assembling a functional test hand. The prototype was approved by e-NABLE, rendering Hand Out the newest chapter of the community. The next step is to find a recipient. The club has been in touch with Dr. Bashir, a well known local pediatrician as well as organizations working with disabled people in Kenya. In light of our recent success and future vision, we have purchased a second e-waste printer. As we establish contact with more recipients, it will become necessary to produce more hands, faster. Our desire is to expand the group to involve other students who see the same potential in this endeavour as we do. But this process is not without its expenses. Donations are necessary to continue the project, and all contributions are appreciated. We are in the process of building a website but you can donate now through the school’s Inspiration Initiative fund raising program. The material aspect of Hand Out is certainly fascinating, and provides valuable insight into the possibilities and

versatility of new technology, but the most remarkable part of this project is its human face. A prosthetic hand in itself is no more than a plastic object. It’s worth exists only through possession. When it belongs to an individual, and contributes to making their life better and each day easier, it is no longer an object, but a part of somebody. Click here to hear more from the Hand Out Team! Experience program

As part of ISK’s commitment to authentic personalized learning, grade 10 students participated in ISK’s Work Experience program in early March. This is the second year of this program which has grown from 11 students in 2016 to 66 students this school year. Students worked in various sectors such as law, education, finance, technology, engineering, medicine, conservation, media and architecture……….the list could go on!

students as they are expected to make important decisions about their final two years of high school—to IB or not to IB!—and our task as educators and parents is to provide as much guidance and support as possible in that process. Work experience at this time in a student’s life can be a powerful focusing exercise, as it helps the student to clarify their interests and values as they get ready for the final two years of high school.

Grade 10 is the logical year for this kind of experience. Students are at an age where they are becoming self-aware as individuals, are seeking purposeful connections between school and life, and are starting to think seriously about what they want to do with their lives. In many ways 10th grade is a pivotal year for

Nadeem Noordin and Luisa Cetina and members of our parent community. This is another example of professional efforts throughout the school to make ISK’s Educational Aims come alive for every student. We appreciate the support of our parent community as they shared their expertise and helped find placements for some of our students. We are looking at ways of expanding this program in the future, so if you know of any potential organizations or individuals who may be interested in mentoring a student for a week please let Severine know at sfumoux@isk. ac.ke. FROM THE TEACHING & LEARNING CENTER…

GROWING OUR LANGUAGE PROGRAM AT ISK: As the rains have finally come to Nairobi, it has put us in mind of the programs we are ‘growing’ at ISK. Based on feedback from students, parents and teachers we are working together to bring more life to our language program. Some of the areas we have started include: • • •

Mother tongue program for ES students including Hindi, Hebrew and French for KG - we will be looking to grow this program into the MS next year Kiswahili - a growing number of requests for Kiswahili have been coming forward and we will be offering Kiswahili A in the MS next year Coding - Beginning in PK, students are learning to code using a variety of programs including Scratch for Kids, C# in the HS, App Inventor

We have been able to provide our teachers with professional learning to support our growing program as well. WOW!! What a fantastic end to our Season 2 Athletics, with three teams in the league semis or finals, and a huge swim meet. We finished off our season in style with our Middle School and High School Sports Awards evenings. These were a great success, with parents and athletics contributing towards a great pot luck dinner, followed by our captains speeches. The evening was finished off with the various teams going to separate rooms with their coaches and parents to reflect on the their achievements and successes.

U19 GIRLS HOCKEY TEAM SEMI FINALISTS!

Overall, the Girls Varsity Under 19 Hockey Team was amazing this year! We managed to get into the semi’s for the first time in 2 years and walked unbeaten which is incredible. Unfortunately we lost 1-0 to Hillcrest in the semi-finals but in the second half we played some of the best hockey I have ever seen this team play. What’s more, we got 3rd place in our own ISK tournament, which is incredible seeing as we have never placed in a tournament before. Within the team, all the girls were absolutely amazing, making this season even better as we were all like family. Overall, it was a successful and fun season but hopefully next year the hockey girls will be bringing home the trophy! Natasha Stenning Grade 12

U19 GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM - FINALISTS!

The team has performed brilliantly this season! Undefeated throughout the season led to a awesome semi final against Rosslyn, at Rosslyn. This was never going to be an easy challenge but the team persisted and finished the game with a 2 - 1 win to put them through to the final, for the first time in many years. The other finalist was RVA, the defending champions. They proved too strong for us on the day and created better chances, but we fought hard. Well done girls and a big thanks to coach Sags. What an inspiration! The Link

CREATIVE ARTS

Six Visual Arts students and seven Drama students represented ISK at the International School of Harare and distinguished themselves as leaders and outstanding performers from the minute we arrived at the ISH. The host school and host families were outstandingly generous! With very well planned days and evenings they kept us all wonderfully entertained, busy and fed for the 4 days of the event. After 3 days of 4 rotating workshops in Drama and Art we collminated in performances mixing all schools in 6 acts and a huge art exhibition. My personal favorite was the artist’s talk given by

ISSEA DRAMA & VISUAL ARTS

internationally renowned artist Yonamine Sebastiao. And I know we all thoroughly enjoyed the night out to Reps Theatre where we attended a dress rehearsal of “39 Steps” performed by a professional London based troupe lead by one or the Drama workshop directors. All in all we had a fantastic time and were well taken care of, the kids learned a lot and worked well with all the other schools. Zimbabwe was green and welcoming and the International School of Harare were perfect hosts. Mr. Charlie Nicholas

ISK ROUND SQUARE REGIONAL CONFERENCE 2017 ISK had the privilege of hosting this year’s African Regional Round Square Conference themed "Aspire to Inspire." ISK students had the opportunity to showcase their work and endless efforts towards contributing to the six pillars of Round Square: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. ISK student baraza leaders, the ISK student welcoming committee and a student social media and technology team, “aspired to inspire“ students, teachers and heads of schools from 18 Round Square African Round Square schools. Mike Russell, Head of Bridge House College summed up the conference on behalf of the schools. “A massive thank-you for ISK’s superb hospitality this past week. Thank you for the top-class program, from an uplifting opening ceremony to every speaker and visit we enjoyed; for the seamless shuttling to and fro, and for the warmth of the ISK welcome and student leaders. “ Well done ISK students and to the Round Square Committee of teachers who worked endlessly and tirelessly to produce an outstanding student led conference! Thank you for living the ISK mission and vision as we strive to develop students of character, who learn, create, act, communicate and solve in a collaborative and engaging environment. TECH @ ISK MEET THE WAANZALISHIS (PIONEERS) AND THE SIMBAS:

PROGRAMMERS OF THE FUTURE! Two collaborative robotics teams from ISK and Children’s Garden Home participated in (and even won a Cup!) at the first-ever “First Lego League Competition” held in East Africa at Brookhouse School on March 11. Watch our Version 1 of our experience at: https://vimeo.com/209880303 What made our teams stand out from the rest? • Our 2 teams combined students from different schools and cultures; •

32

Our teams were student-driven under the leadership of Shiva Wolf (ISK), Oliver Jack (CG), and Stanley Kitili (CG);

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

We made a gameboard for each school to practice at both sites, and brought all materials together to test new strategies;

We helped level the technology playing field in Nairobi by sharing the strengths and interests of students with vastly different experiences and opportunities;

Our Two-School Team members all wore the T-shirt combining our two logos and designed by Camila Parsons of Grade 9. On the back, our message “Teams for All” seemed to resonate with many of the other schools who are beginning to ask us how we did it.

“People in my soc iety think that a girl is not cap a of doing hard cours ble like roboti e s c experienc s, so when I shared e, m my ready to ta any girls in my sc hool are ke any ris ks to be w hat they want.” S haron, CG )

“This model of teamwork could help level inequity and make the world a better place because two schools are working together from many different places to have fun and create things that could help us in the future.” (Siana ISK)

The Link

33

“This (model) would help because currently, there are a few local schools that have technology and know how to use it. With things like this, the experienced can help the inexperienced and level the playing field.” (Shiva, ISK)

“It could be very easy to digitalize the whole world if those schools that hold the digital world within them could start initiating such programs of allowing students from different countries and schools, as well as different cultures, share together what they know about this computerized world. “(Oliver, CG)

The beauty is that the model is developing through participation of ISK students through three years, and is now being replicated at Children’s Garden by having this year’s CG students training up younger students, who will then join our group next September. Other schools are now asking how we developed this model, so we are hoping to help it expand throughout Nairobi and then Kenya. Although we have many active participants in the Technology Club this year, if you want to know more about the actual event, ask this year’s ISK representatives: Shiva Wolf, Siana Ruiz Stannah, Solomon Piper, Julien A Bitang, Samaksh Goyal, and Jiho Son. GREETINGS FROM THE ADVANCEMENT OFFICE!

EDUCATION INITIATIVE FOR CHILDREN’S GARDEN HOME Making education in Kenya more accessible and meaningful to students in the local community is one objective of the Inspiration Initiative. An excellent example of this is found in the story of the first Kio Kit in Kenya* which was donated by ISK to the Irurua Primary School. Please take a look at this short video. You’ll understand why another Kio Kit, this one for the Children’s Garden Home, is one of the four beneficiaries of this year’s Inspiration Initiative. Your participation is important and will be greatly appreciated by the kids at the Children’s Garden Home. Help make a lasting impact on their education.

PARENT TEACHERS ORGANIZATION The big news for the PTO in March, was the coming forward of Isaias Liriano to volunteer as the new PTO Chair. You’ll be aware that the PTO has been without a Chair since last December, so this was welcome news to all. Mr. Liriano who comes from Weymouth, Massachusetts, USA is married to Jennifer and has two children at ISK. More information on him was sent out in an email recently to the ISK community. Mr. Liriano was formalized as PTO Chair by a nomination and a unanimous ‘YES’ vote at the last PTO Open Coffee meeting on the 21st of March.

The PTO would also like to give a big thank you to parents, students, friends and ISK faculty and staff for coming out to support the Taste of Nations. It was truly a celebration of culture and diversity with a sampling of some amazing food from over 40 countries.

At the same Open Coffee, we had the privilege of listening to a talk by Lillian Wagala, Director of MAGOSO Mashimoni Good Samaritan School for Orphans. MAGOSO supports the cost of running the school by selling products in the ISK Duka. Many will attest that this was an inspirational story worth listening to.

Thanks to generous ticket sales, the PTO netted a profit of US$7456 from Taste of Nations. The PTO is pleased to announce that from this fundraising effort, US$1000 has been donated to the Kenya Red Cross Drought Relief Program, which will help families affected by the drought. The PTO will also be allocating US$4000 towards the ISK Service Learning Clubs to fund various charity projects within the community, through an application vetting process. INTERNATIONAL DAY 2017 We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for this year’s International Day held on February, 17th, 2017. The sun was shining, attendance was better than ever, the Parade of Nations was spectacular, and the food was out of this world! The PTO has many people to thank for making this annual event a reality. Mr Craig Baker and the International Day Committee; Mr. Theo Fernandes and the entire Operations team; and last but not least thank you to all the parents who helped organize this event, who volunteered their time as continent coordinators and country reps, and in particular to those who were busy baking, cooking and serving food for Taste of Nations. You all played a role in making this year’s Taste of Nations a great success.

PTO DUKA The PTO Duka had a busy week during the recent Round Square Conference. Open all morning on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the Duka team extended the shop by setting up an additional table and rails full of clothing and bags in the foyer of the Arts Centre. Visiting students and teachers were very complimentary about the range and quality of products available and actively bought

gifts to take home to other parts of Africa. The majority of the products in the PTO Duka are supplied by vendors that support under privileged groups within Nairobi. Our vendors will appreciate receiving the additional sales income this month. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who manned the extended shop during the conference.
