About ISK The International School of Kenya (ISK) is a private, non-profit PreK-Grade 12 school created in 1976 through a joint partnership between the governments of the United States and Canada. Nestled on 40 acres of a former coffee plantation, ISK serves the educational needs of both expatriate and Kenyan students who seek a challenging international curriculum which leads to the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma program. ISK’s internationally focused curriculum has helped Kenya become a magnet for foreign business investment and a desired posting for those working for the continuing development of East Africa. Expatriate families consider Kenya a quality career opportunity, in part due to the quality education they find at ISK. Likewise, Kenyan families who want an international, culturally diverse education for their children see ISK as the school of choice. ISK has over 915 students from more than 60 countries. Graduates earn an ISK North American accredited diploma and approximately 70 percent of ISK graduates earn the IB Diploma, enabling them to study at some of the most respected and competitive colleges and universities in the world. ISK students form a supportive, spirited and diverse community, which enables new students to adapt easily to campus life. Interacting in such a welcoming crosscultural milieu, ISK students celebrate the unique and wonderful differences and similarities of people from around the world. The value of respect for each other and for Kenya is evident at ISK, as is a commitment to giving back to the community. Our scholarship program for Kenyan students, together with a broad and dedicated service-learning program which serves our local and national community, have shaped our school values since 1967 and continue today. In keeping with ISK’s strategic mission and vision, we are dedicated to empowering each student to create solutions for tomorrow’s challenges. Therefore, we have embarked on a multimillion dollar facility and program expansion project to provide students and faculty with the programs, tools and facilities necessary for success. Once completed, ISK will be able to accommodate 1,200 students with expanded programs and facilities.

Director’s Letter Inspiring International Day What an inspiring International Day with the Taste of Nations at ISK! Celebrating the diversity of our school population during the parade and then seeing how students and parents enjoyed each other’s company as one community afterwards was truly inspiring. I was especially impressed by the positive and supportive atmosphere of all involved from the parents to the staff to the faculty and the students. Thank you also to all the parents who contributed to preparing and serving food at the Taste of Nations. With the full support of the PTO, the food stalls were amazing with such a wide range

4

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

of tasty choices and plenty for all. A special thank you to Craig Baker and those that served on the International Day organizing committee as well as the music department with a great mix of performers from around the world. These types of events demonstrate what a wonderful, diverse community we are and, more importantly, our commonalities and our common goals. Inspiration Initiative Launched The International Day also saw the launch of ISK’s Inspiration Initiative. Our school community is always looking for ways to reach out and provide support to others. This new initiative provides several avenues to support community-building projects that parallel our mission and vision. You can choose to support community outreach service learning projects, contribute to our scholarship program for qualified Kenyan students, and more. To find out how you can participate in our common goals please read the Advancement Office’s article, page 29. Teacher Recruitment for 2017-18 One of the most important aspects of our leadership team is recruiting of topquality teachers from around the world to facilitate learning at our school. This

year, with the thorough support of our principals and other senior leaders, we filled our teacher openings for next year. ISK has a solid reputation world-wide as a caring, innovative, solution-oriented institution and this contributes to a large pool of what we believe are exceptional teachers and administrators interested in ISK. Next year we will have a new Middle School Principal and we have a new position, Assistant Elementary Principal. Both of these administrators will be visiting ISK this April to help ensure a smooth transition in 2017-18. ISK Facilities Plans Approved The ISK Boards approved plans for facilities development in line with the Facilities Master Plan for the 2017-18 school year. The next phase of our campus plan is the construction of new covered basketball/volleyball courts to enhance our physical education program and enable us to host quality ISSEA events. We are also constructing a new fabrication lab addition to our Creative Arts Centre as part of our design technology program and an additional ES Art room. Finally, we will be completing the installation of two high school elevators, thus making our campus fully accessible.

GREETINGS FROM THE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Board of Directors held its monthly meeting Tuesday, February 21, 2017. The meeting started with a student-led presentation on the upcoming Round Square Africa Regional Conference being hosted by ISK March 21-25, 2017. Round Square is an organization comprised of 150 schools in 40 countries across five continents dedicated to student development and responsibility. The theme of the conference is Aspire to Inspire. Four high students provided details on the program for the student delegates and capped the presentation with a powerful video in which student and faculty shared their views on inspiration. The enthusiasm of the student presentation and the willingness to run the conference is why we are proud to be a Round Square School. The ASB Vice President Imran Sunderjee reported ASB is completing internal

deliberations on whether to use a buddy or house system to encourage and integrate communications among students. He noted also the ASB will be shifting away from showcasing Arts projects around campus to focusing on STEM projects. We look forward to seeing the results.

away from using the ISA tests. The number of international schools using the MAP test continues to grow. Finally, she reported the results of the PSAT and noted this test essentially functions as a practice for the SAT and serves as a measure of qualification for merit scholarships.

David Henry presented the results of the staff and faculty climate survey, noting issue trends and potential areas for growth. For the first time students completed the climate survey. Two topics that stood out were that the students gave high marks to feeling safe on the campus and being respected.

The Board reviewed the Proposed Budget for 2017-18, the Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP) and Facilities Master Plan (FMP) prepared by the Finance Committee. The Board Chair read a brief statement from the Chair of the Budget Committee in support of the thorough review done by the administration in preparing the budget. During the Board’s review, both David Henry and Moez Jiwani fielded several questions about budget details. The Board endorsed the Proposed Budget, LTFP and FMP for approval by the Board of Governors.

Jodi Lake, Director of Teaching and Learning presented the most recent results of the ISA, MAP and PSAT tests and explained the differences between the tests. She noted international schools in the same tier as ISK are beginning to move

Elections for new Board members are coming up in April. We have two board positions opening up next year for parent elected board members. Parents who are interested in running for one of these positions but cannot attend the session can contact Board Chair Vicky Cole at iskbodvc@gmail. com or find information and nomination documents on the ISK website. The deadline for submitting nominations is March 10, 2017. There will be a second Governance Orientation session March 20, 2017 at 4 pm in the Commons Conference room for candidates who have submitted their nominations. The Board’s next meeting is March 21, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Parents are always welcome to attend. Mimi Steward Board Secretary

ZERO!!! Grade 5 IC Trip

The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students displayed their learning of maths during an assembly on Tuesday, February 21st. The Pre-K students sang a song about making pictures from shapes. Following this, some students made a picture with magnetic shapes while others played with a parachute and made shapes with their bodies. The Kindergarteners sang a song about numbers on a bus. Students partnered up to make pairs of numbers that added up to ten. Together, the Pre-K and Kindergarteners danced to a song following the directions of positional words and counting steps. What a entertaining and effective way to display their knowledge of maths.

Barely two weeks ago, the grade five students, teachers and other adults went to Mount Kenya for the annual grade five IC trip. The trip integrated the Colonial Kenya Unit. Focus was on the colonial changes and post independence period in Kenya. There were discussions of the contribution of the Mau Mau fighters to the independence struggle of Kenya, and also a hike to the Mau Mau caves. The students visited a Kikuyu village. Here, they learned about the Gikuyu people, their art of weaving, brewing and how to make their traditional food mukimu. They enjoyed the welcome

dance performed by our hosts and participated in it as well. They also visited a local school on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. At the school, the students interacted with their peers from this school, planted trees together and before saying goodbye played together. While the students came back tired, they had so many wonderful things to say about the trip. Francis Atemo ES Activities Coordinator

Service Learning in Grade 4 Grade 4’s links to LakeView Primary School go back over several years. We began visiting the school as part of our IC Trip to Lake Naivasha and over the years have built up a strong relationship between our two schools. Each year in March, Grade 4 visits the school for a day. We spend some time in class, and all students work together on lessons delivered by both ISK and LakeView teachers. Students then complete a book of favorite things together, getting to know more about each other’s lives. Then it’s outside for some fun and games – soccer, hula hoops, basketball, skipping – which gives the students from both schools more chances to get to know each

10

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

other a little better. Later in the year, when Grade 4 work on their economics unit, all the money raised goes towards different projects at LakeView. As our students have direct experience of the school, they are able to contribute actively to discussions about the best way to support the school. In our first year we partnered with LakeView parents to provide additional new toilets. Over the years we’ve provided chairs for the staff room and classrooms; paid for repairs to classroom walls, floors and windows; provided first aid equipment, many textbooks, playground equipment and December Holiday boxes. Last year saw us go full circle, by being the main contributors to Phase 1 of building

brand new toilet blocks for the boys, with a girls’ block due for construction next year. However, for students from both schools, the opportunity to make new friends, learn about each other’s lives and play together is what is most memorable about the relationship between our two schools. Our plans for the future including becoming pen pals with LakeView students along with trying to find ways for us to both spend more time together during the trip and to maintain student relationships after the IC Trip is over. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

Career Fair On the eighth of February at the International School of Kenya, high school students from grade nine through eleven had the privilege of welcoming some of the most successful pioneers of numerous and wondrous industries. This was not limited to Kenya alone but from the farthest corners of the world and from various walks of life. ISK students were exposed to riveting stories, presentations and demonstrations of what might just soon become theirs. At around eight o’clock, the day kicked off with a speech from the keynote speaker at the auditorium, Mr. Nadeem Noordin of CloudHop with quite an enthralling presentation. Afterwards, the students headed out to find their waiting speakers at their respective classes. It is important to note that students, about a week prior, had already chosen their four main speakers for the day. Delving into the day itself, it is without doubt that most students

were fascinated with their speakers, or at the very least, learned something from them. For most of them their speakers spoke about their interests, and the speakers gave the information in a capacity that a mere brochure would not be able to give, behind the scenes knowledge, which no one can deny is very valuable! There were a few speakers who did not make it to this spellbinding occasion due to unforeseeable complications, but this did not in anyway stop students from having a very informative talk with one of their soon to be colleagues or competitors. Students were allowed a ten minute break in between speakers and at the end of the day the grade eleven’s returned to their advisory groups and grades nine and ten proceeded to their experiential design groups. FROM THE TEACHING & LEARNING CENTER…

ISK is always a busy place with many opportunities for parents. There are also many areas in which we, the educators, are working to improve the way we help students learn. It can be hard to keep up with all of the information bombarding us even though we want to attend every Parent Tea, information session, parent discussion group, and PTO meeting! ISSEA GIRLS BASKETBALL

I can confidently say that this is the best basketball team I have played with throughout my time on the ISK varsity basketball team. We were an extremely connected group, and I believe that that contributed greatly to our success in ISSEA. We won every single game we played except for the last, but despite the hard loss I still strongly believe that we were the best team in the tournament. Overall, this ISSEA was an absolutely amazing, exhilarating experience that I will never forget. Every member of the team gave it their all, and not once did anyone give up. We played the best kind of basketball we know how to play, and for that I am so, so proud. Go Lions! Iida Valme

ISSEA GIRLS SWIMMING The ISSEA Girls Swimming 2017 was hosted by ISK this year, and it was an beautiful and wonderful experience. I would like to thank all the parents and classmates that supported our swimmers by the poolside, and the organizers, Mr Moore and Tana Werner for helping create such a wonderful experience and Lions Pride who made it all happen. Our girls came 4th place, as the competition was extremely tough this year. The entire team did their absolute best, and I am extremely proud of them. For the past few months, with training as much as 4-5 times a week and 3-4 kilometers per training, Coach Isaac and Coach Patrick did a wonderful job . There were many beautiful memories made, the team atmosphere was fantastic and I hope that the team made many friends for life. This was an amazing ISSEA experience, and I hope that next year will be no different. Marie Vandermeulen

MY EXPERIENCE WITH Shangilia is an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya home to over 200 children from the community. The name Shangilia means “rejoice” and it is a place of hope and safety where I volunteer every other week. I spend time with the children, teaching them, playing with them. I’m currently also working in the library to tidy it up and provide a safe environment for the children to read. Working in correlation with the International School of Kenya (ISK) I help build relationships with the children and help the teachers expand the learning in the school, not only from textbooks and chalkboards but to real life relationships and skills. Drama, art, reading and music give the Shangilia children a voice and a manner to express themselves. Along with expression, what I am trying to achieve at Shangilia is a sense of appreciation and comfort among different cultures and ethnicities. It is really my belief that the children at the school have

26

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF KENYA

REJOICE

so much potential. With the correct support and initiative they can discover it. And with a positive attitude and a new approach to learning, I hope to inspire the Shangilia students to do just that. Find their talent.

I personally have had a lot of experience with art; drawing, painting and stenciling, though not teaching. For me this was a brand new hurdle that I had never been faced with before. Give me something to draw, done. If you ask me to show someone else how to draw, let alone show them that it’s not about what is on the canvas but what the canvas is saying, then that would take me a minute to figure out. But I didn’t have a minute; it was a hurdle that I needed to overcome instantly, though not on my own. Something I learnt on the first day was that the children at Shangilia, are excited, ecstatic even. They did not care that I had no past experience and that most of the time I would be as clueless as them. They only wanted to enjoy themselves and they wanted

to do art with me. Pretentious expectations didn’t fall away, they simply didn’t exist. On the first day I learnt how to take a leap in the dark, and with the help of the Shangilia children and my peers, I jumped over the first hurdle almost effortlessly. From there the other hurdles which came later, seemed a little less scary and a little more doable.

Every time I go to Shangilia the children’s boundless positivity and energy drive me to want to continue what I’m doing. It reminds me of why I joined in the first place. When choosing a possible service activity, there were so many options, from forestry to Hearts to gardening. But when I read about what Shangilia entailed and thought about the possibilities that it could hold, I got excited. I got excited about the fact that I could spend time with individuals who deserved so much more from life; with children whom I felt deserved the world. And I got excited at the prospect that I would be able to help give them everything that they could

hope for. As time went on though, my reasons changed slightly. In the beginning I joined because Shangilia needed more people and volunteers to work with the children and wanted someone to help extend the learning. Which I was very happy about joining and helping. As time went on my aspirations changed. I now want to help show them what the world contains and how to go after their dreams.

Over the course of the year, I hope to continue to work with Shangilia to elevate the library and insure that the children are inspired and excited about arts and school. I hope to personally continue to learn and evolve as an individual. Most of all, I hope that it will be a fruitful year for everyone who is involved: ISK, Shangilia, all the volunteers and most importantly the spectacular individuals who call Shangilia home. ROUND SQUARE AFRICA REGIONAL CONFERENCE

ST. ANDREW’S SCHOOL, TURI - KENYA I 12 FEBRUARY - 16 FEBRUARY, 2017 Purpose Statement: Round Square is a worldwide association of schools on five continents sharing unique and ambitious goals. The key vision is a strong commitment to personal development and responsibility as well as academic excellence. Topics: Internationalism This is where students see themselves as global citizens, looking beyond gender, race and nationality. During the Round Square, students demonstrated internationalism through communication and compromise. They enjoyed each other’s cultures. Democracy This is freedom of thought and speech is encouraged and facilitated.

This ideal was demonstrated through the baraza groups. In these groups, students were given chances to air out their thoughts/views on different activities done on each day and later brainstorm those ideas. Environmentalism Here students learn about the delicate interdependence between humans and the planet. On this ideal we visited different tea plantation sites. On these visits students were able to learn a lot about Kenya and it’s environments. The different tea plantations we visited were; Unilever, Finlay and Chemusot, all located in Kericho. Through these plantations, job opportunities are created, leading to so many families being fed and educated. Adventure Schools offer activities to challenge students so they gain confidence and problem solving skills. This demonstrated students’ creativity in tackling different challenges during the adventure. Team building was also reflected when doing obstacle courses. Focus was shown when raft building and biking.

Leadership This is where students learn that leadership is about serving others and requires kindness, wisdom and justice. This was demonstrated by St. Andrew’s Turi School as they took charge of every part of the conference. They served the visiting schools with excellent hospitality and love. They were kind to everyone and they were ready to help when need be. Service Students practice helping others less fortunate and they also learn how they can make positive a difference. This ideal helped our students in giving back to the community. They shared their knowledge with community schools. During the keynote speaker’s sessions, one common thing came up very strongly, the power of community serve. Every speaker shared how they have been helping the less fortunate communities. Life fulfillment is acquired by helping the needy or by making a positive difference. In conclusion our students learned that money is not a byproduct of success. Success is a journey. PARENT TEACHERS ORGANIZATION PTO OPEN COFFEE On Tuesday 21st February, the PTO held its monthly Open Coffee morning. This month parents were given a Capstone project presentation by Grade 8 students Zoe Krueger & Talya De Cleene that explained how palm oil production is affecting the environment and the detrimental aspects of palm oil to humans. Did you know that palm oil is in more than 50% of all products in the local supermarket, including two of your children’s favourites; Nutella and Oreos? At the request of parents, Sue Small, Student Support Services Co-ordinator gave an overview of the role of ISK counsellors and an introduction to Nancy Remondi the new MS counsellor who will be joining ISK in August. Nancy comes from Canada and has many years international schools experience spanning four continents, first as a Middle School Humanities teacher and for the last eight years as a Counselor working with G6-8. In her current position in Hong Kong, Nancy has run a fully integrated advisory and counseling services program in the Middle School. We look forward to welcoming Nancy to ISK Middle School. Craig Baker MS Principle and Jarrod Dale HS Assistant Principal gave an introductory talk on how ISK facilitates moving up from Elementary to Middle School and Middle to High School. Questions were raised regarding the requirements for the IB diploma and the options available to students. For more information parents were directed to the school website http://www.isk.ac.ke/learning/high-school/internationalbaccalaureate

An update was also given on two recent major events by Anacleto Gutierrez on behalf of FOTA and by Tanya Cox for the International Day Team. The meeting concluded with a discussion on the PTO structure and the election of officers for the 2017/18 PTO committee. The PTO is currently operating without Co-Chairs. In order to ensure the continuation of the PTO we need parents to come forward and become actively involved.

ISK FOTA ART SHOW

The FOTA Art Show took place on the 3rd, 4th and 6th of February. Thanks to the large number of visitors from the ISK community and their personal networks, the event was a great success. Thirty-three volunteers were involved in making the show happen. Besides the volunteers during the opening hours of the show there was a lot of work done in the background. The former FOTA team helped in selecting the artists and deciding on new artist applications that came in the months before the show. There is always a lot of administration around the show and other volunteers helped with the intake of all the artwork and the setup and completion of the show. One hundred artists were invited and 77 accepted and showed their artworks. Artists came from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Artists included some well

known names such as Ismael Kateregga, Patrick Kinuthia, Fred Abuga, Tom Mboya, Yassir Ali and Fawaz Al Said, however, there was also some new talent.

from Jodi Lake and Patricia Salleh Matta, extra Security, equipment and support from IT, Communications, Finance, Operations, etc. Special thanks also go to Sammy, Alphonse and Joseph.

From the 218 shown artworks, 58 were sold for a total of 1,820,600 KES, which is approximately 17600 USD. Three-fourths of this amount goes to the selling artists and a fourth to FOTA. After deducting operational costs, FOTA donates this money to projects stimulating the arts in Kenya.

FOTA stands for “Friends Of The Arts” and is an independent organization of the PTO run by ISK community members. FOTA’s mission is to both promote the arts in Kenya, and provide a link between the arts and the ISK community. FOTA’s aim is to give Kenyan and East African artists exposure to an audience of enthusiastic supporters and buyers, as well as giving the wider ISK community the opportunity to see East African art at its best.

Thanks to the ISK art teachers we had a lot of students visiting the show on Monday, February 6th. Jodi Watkins organized a treasure hunt for the students to make it fun and keep them interested. We would also like to thank the school for the excellent support we received in organizing this event. This support was in the form of snacks for the volunteers

For any suggestions or requests you can contact FOTA via their email account fota@isk.ac.ke Marilou de Wit, Anacleto Gutierrez & Shruti Shah
