Interested in learning more about ISK’s governance? Thinking of standing for election to the Board of Directors? Have you ever wondered how ISK’s two-tiered board structure works?… Or about the difference between board policies and operational procedures?… Or how the two boards plan for the future of the school, while providing resources to meet current needs?… Or how membership on the Board of Directors is determined? Are you aware that there are three categories of membership for the Board of Directors—parent-elected, embassy-appointed, and Board-appointed?

On Thursday, January 21 (3:30 to 4:30 p.m.) there will be a Governance Orientation session at ISK. This brief session is intended for either stakeholders who want to learn more about how ISK is governed, or for parents who are thinking of standing for election to the Board of Directors in the March/April election process. Venue: Commons conference room. Wishing all ISK families a relaxing holiday and a rewarding 2016!

On behalf of all our teachers, staff and administrators, I wish you a wonderful family holiday! May your new year begin full of dreams, and continue full of peace and good health. And to the Armtoft, Elder, Choi, Habteab, Lee, Peregrino and Veldkkemp families who are leaving ISK, I hope your memories of ISK nurture you as you begin the next stage of your lives! John Roberts

“What would I be if I was.... was a question 8th graders answered in self-portraits exhibited along with selfportraits of historical figures in paintings, characters in a book, or pop culture by 7th graders in the HS/MS art exhibition in the CAD center.

Sixth graders held their own in creative imagination and skillful rendering with op art cubes and monochromatic self-portraits showing the kinds of things they like to do in their free time. What a great way to celebrate the inner artist and

its expression - affirming how all of us have an innate ability for visual thinking. Nurturing the artist within... in ART. Teresa Tipton Middle School Art Specialist

Spectathlon

Unfortunately we had to postpone our annual Spectathlon this week due to the very rainy weather. Hopefully the sun will come back over holiday, and we’ll be able to reschedule the event sometime in January. Stay tuned for the exact date. 7th Grade Music Performance

Final Assembly for Semester One

We had our final assembly for the semester on Wednesday, with some amazing performances and presentations. During the assembly we were finally able to recognize those students who participated in the ISK 2015 Summer Reading Program. ISK 2015 Summer Reading Awards

iPads, A Great Tool for Learning

Our one-to-one iPad program in sixth and seventh grades is quickly becoming a part of the learning culture in the middle school. Seventh grade students are using iPads as an educational tool in all core classes: science, math, social studies, and English. In sixth grade students have been using their iPads in science and math and this will expand to social studies and English after the holiday. Also, sixth graders will begin bringing their iPads home sometime in January.

iPads in 7th Grade Science Lab

Enjoy your long holiday with your families and friends! Stylus Needed

For seventh graders and soon for sixth graders, please remind them to charge their iPads when they get home after school. We’re also recommending students purchase a stylus over the holidays to use with their iPads. This will make apps like “notability” much more effective for notetaking and making diagrams.

Digital Report Cards

We are not printing report cards this semester. This is one way we can support a greener culture at ISK. As of today, you can access your child’s report through the parent portal in Powerschool. Steps to finding the report are listed below: 1: All you need to do is log into your parent portal as you normally do. Find the “Report Card” link at the bottom of the list of pages.

2: Once the new page opens, choose the Term to Print, S1 is Semester One and Submit.

If you experience difficulties in doing this, please contact Miriam Maina (mmaina@isk.ac.ke) or Vincent Bundi (vbundi@isk.ac.ke).

Thank you to high school families for your support this semester. We have enjoyed an exciting semester of learning at ISK, marked by serious scholarship in the classroom and myriad enriching growth opportunities outside the classroom. Our ASB student government has led the student body with grace and thoughtfulness, while our senior class has been exceptional in their approach to learning, demonstration of character, and overall role modeling. Congratulations are in order for all our students on a positive semester, though seniors may be looking forward to rest even more than others in light of major IB now work done and college applications completed – in fact, some of our seniors are already hearing back from universities with the offer of places for next year. To our departing students and families, we wish you a smooth and safe onward journey – please keep in touch and let us know if there’s anything you need from the school when you arrive at your destination. Semester One Report Cards: As implemented last year and in line with our 1-to-1 planning/tech vision plan, the high school semester one ‘Report Card’ will be made available online through the PowerSchool Parent Portal on the last day of term. In preparation for the issue of reports, we recommend that you confirm your ability to access the Portal at this time - if you have not yet accessed the Portal or need assistance please contact Jon Cain (jcain@isk.ac.ke) immediately. Swimming Report - 1ST SEMESTER We are grateful for a very successful 1st season as it comes to an end. A total of 55 swimmers were actively involved in our early morning and evening swimming training. After eight weeks of training, the last weekend of October saw our swimmers taking on our first challenge, the swim gala at Rosslyn School. The confidence of our Lions team was very high and success kept on coming in all the races. ISK Senior Boys and Girls teams set very high standards of competition by scooping first position in most of the events. In the final results, both team scooped 1st position overall out of the five teams present. Our Junior team didn’t disappoint either, the boys and girls team came first and 2nd overall for this championship.

14 | International School of Kenya

In early November it was the time for the ISK Lions team to play host for our mini-gala that started on a Friday afternoon. Four schools were in attendance and the incredible team spirit saw ISK amazed by the results. ISK Girls team Peponi Girls team Rosslyn Girls team ISK Boys team Oshwal Boys team Rosslyn Boys team

The support from our parents in officiating and team participation was over-whelming and very much appreciated. The next main event in the calendar was the county swimming meet at Makini School. A total of 14 schools were in attendance. Race after race our Lions team kept breaking their PBs (personal best times) and setting the county records. The level of support, and encouragement, shown by the swimmers to each other only added to the buzz around the team. Individual rankings: GIRLS 12/13 yrs. 12/13 yrs. 14/15 yrs.

Track and Field / Cross Country Report 1ST SEMESTER

The Track and field season culminated with some major recordbreaking performances at the Braeburn Kasarani meet where three long time school records were broken.

16 | International School of Kenya

Molly Bailey set a new meet and school record in the U19 girls 1500m with a time of 4:56, a full 30 seconds faster than the previous meet record of 5:26. Her even greater achievement was breaking the 27 year old U19 girls’ school record of 5:21 that was set in 1988! Molly also received the trophy as the U19 girls’ Braeburn meet athlete. Marcel Awori broke the 17 year old U15 boys high jump record with a personal best height of 1.70m. Over the years, no U15 boy has come close to the 1.67m set by Joel Koszawrski in 1998. The closest was in 2006 with a height of 1.62. Marcel’s previous personal best was 1.53m. U19 boys 4x400m team comprising Stanley Langyintuo, Slate Rostal, Harrison Mutai and Jason Musee broke the old record set by a team including Jason’s older brother, Keith Musee in 2010 with a new time of 3:41. It is important to note that this was done despite Slate running when he was unwell.

International Day January 22, 2016

Welcome to Parents, Students, Families and Friends, International Day will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016! Come join us for this incredibly diverse event where students will represent a country of their choice for the Parade of Nations followed by the delicious Taste of Nations hosted by the PTO. Parade of Nations An excellent opportunity for your child to dress in traditional clothing or the colors of the country they will represent. Children with multiple nationalities or who have lived in many places, will need to choose a country to represent for the parade. If you are traveling home over the December break, please pick up something from your country. Also, if you have any interesting facts to share about your country, please click here. Our MC’s, Mr. Lavack and Mrs. Moore, would love to include them in their commentary. Check with your child about which country they would like to represent and have them tell the ES homeroom teacher, MS homeroom teacher or HS advisory teacher so we can get an accurate count for setting up tents and seating. 18 | International School of Kenya

The Compass Club

20 | International School of Kenya

Imagine getting together with friends every week and doing service activities like planting trees while enjoying yourself with your friends. Fun, right? I was inspired by a friend of mine who lives in New Jersey where she started the Compass Club. It sounded fun, so I talked to my friends about it. People started coming and really liked it. We do activities that include service to the environment and people, and discuss how to make good decisions. We also do fun stuff, like baking competitions and painting. I really love all the activities we do.

chose a life full of friends you can count on. With each day you are better than who you were yesterday and each day you make the world better than it was yesterday.

One of the services that we did was visit a local school called Kirawa School, where we planted trees, played games, and got to know these kids who are our age. They live completely different lives from us. We made friends and it was nice to mingle with people we don’t usually get to mingle with. It really makes you grow as a person.

I love the Compass Club so much because it’s a place where you don’t have to worry about what your friends think about you, or if your hair looks okay. It’s a place where you can tell each other your problems, and the others will be there for you. We have all grown so much closer and it’s so refreshing to not have to always hear gossip left and right. I have grown closer to my friends, but also further away from all the gossip and mean things people do at school. And now every Wednesday, my friends and I are eager for the day to be done so we can go to Compass Club. :)

Our club is called the Compass Club because a compass helps you find your own path. I know it sounds cheesy, but the Compass Club is about “finding yourself” and deciding what path you want to take in life. Instead of a life full of gossip about what other people are doing (like who is dating who), the Club helps us

Lighthouse Grace Academy Report Volunteering at the Lighthouse Grace Academy has been both a challenge and a blessing for our team. We have enjoyed reading, singing and dancing with the children and I’m sure they, have too. In the first few weeks, everyone was rather shy, and both parties struggled to communicate effectively. However, with the arrival of some new found magic tricks from Alex, everyone came out of their shell, and we were able to have some fun! In the past few weeks, the children’s reading abilities have immensely increased, and now they tend to read the stories to us instead, and know them by heart. Along with reading to the children, we have also been teaching them new games, and we have also learned some . By interacting with a children on terms they understand such as gameplay, we were able to learn more about their lives. We were able to show them that 22 | International School of Kenya

their futures were not written in stone, and who they were born is not who they must become. We too have also taken many lessons from this experience. We have learned to be humble, as several of these children have not experienced even half of the things we have done. We have also learned patience, the main lesson learned from trying to organise a group of over sixty children to sit still and listen. Also, we have learned plenty of Swahili! I have really enjoyed this experience, and I hope the rest of the team has, too. For the rest of this quarter, I hope to teach the children more, and develop greater relationships with the people, so that we may both change each other’s lives. Hurray for Lighthouse Grace Academy! Kangemi

Resource Centre

Service Trip

Learning and fun. These are the goals of the group of ISK students who visit the Kangemi Resource Centre, a place which provides opportunity for the disadvantaged. Kangemi Resource Centre sits in the heart of the Kangemi slum in Nairobi and provides a place for students of all ages, as well as many adults, a place to pursue their interests and advance their knowledge. The centre provides learning resources such as a library, printing services, and inexpensive internet access to anyone who needs to complete a school assignment or just catch up with some friends on Facebook. The centre also provides many courses for children and adults, especially in the realm of computer literacy, and even contains a daycare for the youngest of pupils. Every Wednesday, a group of 20-25 ISK students, ranging from Grade 6 to 8, visit the centre to help a group of Kenyan students. They are fearlessly led by adults Jacinta Muia, Leonard Mbui, and ISK senior Brendan McCoy. They work with 14 pupils from the school, Light Rays Centre, who come to Kangemi always ready to learn. What does the group do while at the centre? Normally, the Light Rays and ISK students are divided into different groups. Each group may work with computers, play board games, read, or play mathematics games designed to improve the students’ numerical abilities. On special days, the group stays together and discusses important issues such as climate change and personal hygiene. All of these are important, as they help the ISK students develop as leaders, and help the Light Rays

A Reflection students develop vital information technology skills and finesse of the English language, which are necessary in our modern economy. At the end of every session everyone plays either basketball or football together. Needless to say, this is many students’ favorite part of the sessions. On the day I visited the centre, the students were doing the usual computer training and board games. As I walked through the computer lab, I could feel the learning taking place. The ISK students were teaching how to use the mouse and perform basic functions in Microsoft Word. “Here, try it this way, use the mouse” Comments like this are filling the air, and you can see that their Kenyan counterparts are eagerly taking in the information. When I asked why the students like coming to Kangemi, ISK 8th grader Emily responds, “I like that it gives me a different perspective on how the rest of Kenya lives.” 6th grader Maisha says, “I absolutely love helping others, especially with computers, and I learn new things about myself.” Light Rays Centre class 7 pupil, Sandra says her favorite part of the programme is, “learning lots of new things every time I come”. Fellow class 7 student, Victor says, “I love the games, especially when we play football.” If the goals of this group are learning and fun, they are definitely succeeding on both counts. FOTA

VISIT TO KITENGELA GLASS Thank you to the FOTA team for organizing a fun trip out to the Kitengela hot glass studio on Tuesday, 1st December. A group of 21 ladies and 1 three year old departed ISK at 8:30 a.m. After a rather long and bumpy ride we arrived at the Kitengela site made up of creative eclectic housing, an Alladins cave of a workshop and a café located on the edge of Nairobi National Park by Ongata Rongai. On arrival we enjoyed light refreshments at the Café which was decorated with beautiful ornamental glass garden decorations and furniture. We then watched a demonstration of the skilled art of glassblowing in the glassblowing dome, followed by shopping time in the various shopping outlets. A delicious lunch of a vegetarian Indian spread was catered for us by Subhash Ganatra of Riya’s Café. Laden with home decorations and gifts of all shapes and sizes, the buses returned to school just in time for a quick turnaround to take some of the students home. Kitengela is definitely worth a visit with family and friends. For more information visit www. kitengela.com

It’s been an amazing semester at the Students’ Canteen with a variety of new foods introduced. We’ve had the chance to sample some Mongolian momo dumplings, Sushi, bagels, DIY salad wraps, DIY sandwiches and various iced drinks and the response has been amazing. We’ve had close to 60% enrollment of ES students on the prepaid hot lunch program. The students have had a chance to enjoy foods from various parts of the world including some favourites like Naan bread, sweet potato fries and of course pizza! At the Students’ Canteen we aim to open up our students’ pallets to the different tastes of the world. This semester also saw the introduction of the cashless card system for the MS and HS students. We’ve had both students, staff and parents sign up for the program with a steady increase in numbers since opening of school in August. The system has picked up well and we look forward to more sign-ups next semester. This semester also saw the opening up of the Early Bird Breakfast joint next to the coffee shop. The breakfast joint serves not only students but parents and the staff at very affordable prices and healthy breakfast options. The canteen also underwent a thorough inspection by the Kenya National Health Laboratories. Water, food and storage facilities samples were taken and all food handlers underwent a full medical examination. The Students’ Canteen was given a clean bill of health two weeks later when results came out. We strive not only to give you healthy food options but provide them in the most hygienic environment. Next semester promises to be even better with more tantalizing options and we invite all suggestions in order to make the canteen experience a memorable one. Thank you for joining us at the canteen for lunch, snacks, juice or breakfast. Let’s do it all over again next semester! Dear Parents, Your child’s/children’s health while at school is our priority. His/her Medical Health Form, which you submitted upon enrolment, guides us on how to manage your child should the need arise while he/she is in our care. This form should be updated every two years and sent to the Health Office. School policy states that a student without a completed and up-to-date Medical Health Form will not be permitted to attend classes 30 days after enrolment and or commencement of the school year. In addition, no student will be allowed to attend any school trip(s) without an up-todate Medical Health Form. We appreciate your understanding. Please ensure that all health forms are updated and submitted to the Health Office by August 15th 2016. The ISK Medical Health Form can be found and downloaded from the ISK website.
