BLUE KNIGHT SPOTLIGHT ON

#4 DJ MENDENHALL

IN THE FIRST 3 DECADES OF THE UU FOOTBALL PROGRAM, NO BLUE KNIGHT HAS MADE THE IMPACT D.J. MENDENHALL HAS. IN THE FINAL GAME OF HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR, MENDENHALL BROKE THE SCHOOL’S CAREER SCORING RECORD. IN JUST 22 GAMES, HE CROSSED THE GOAL LINE MORE TIMES THAN ANY BLUE KNIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM! AS A TRUE FRESHMAN, HIS OFFENSE BROKE EVERY TEAM RECORD IN THE BOOKS. AS AN ENCORE, HE WENT OUT AND BROKE ALL OF THOSE RECORDS AGAIN AND AGAIN AS A SOPHOMORE AND A JUNIOR. THE INCREDIBLE NUMBERS ARE STARTING MOUNT UP AND REACH STAGGERING HEIGHTS. THROUGH HIS FIRST 3 SEASONS, D.J. HAS THROWN FOR OVER 6,700 YARDS AND RUSHED FOR ANOTHER 1,605. HE COULD BECOME JUST THE 3RD PLAYER IN NCAA D-II HISTORY TO THROW FOR 10,000+ AND RUSH FOR ANOTHER 2,000+ YARDS. IN ADDITION TO ALL OF THOSE YARDS, D.J. HAS RACKED UP 97 TDS (66 PASSING, 29 RUSHING, 2 RECEIVING). HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR 586 TOTAL POINTS THROUGH HIS FIRST 3 SEASONS AT UU. TO PUT THAT IN PERSPECTIVE, AS A PROGRAM, UU JUST BARELY MANAGED TO DOUBLE THAT TOTAL DURING THE ENTIRE 1990’S. D.J. ALSO HAS MORE WINS IN HIS 3 SEASONS (20) THAN THE BLUE KNIGHTS DID DURING THE ‘90S (16). NOW, ENTERING HIS SENIOR SEASON, MENDENHALL IS AGAIN A PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN, BUT ONE GOAL HAS ALLUDED HIM OVER HIS ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER. WILL 2013 BE THE YEAR D.J. PUTS URBANA UNIVERSITY ON THE NATIONAL MAP WITH THE PROGRAM’S FIRST TRIP TO THE NCAA DIVISION II PLAYOFFS?

NEW HOME, SAME GOAL FOR UU FOOTBALL IN 2013

2O13 OUTLOOK

A move to the new Mountain East Conference hasn’t changed UU’s quest for a championship

URBANA, Ohio (August 28, 2013) – For the third time in four years, the Urbana University football team has a new conference home. Adjusting to new opponents, new road trips and new stadiums doesn’t change the Blue Knights’ main goal in 2013. After claiming the program’s first conference championships in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and 2011, the Blue Knights have been on a mission to add more hardware to the team’s trophy case. Brief stops in the GLFC and GLVC are done, and now, Urbana University finds itself in a permanent home: NCAA Division II’s newest conference, the Mountain East Conference, based in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Eleven teams will vie for the first MEC football championship in 2013, and Urbana expects to be amongst the serious contenders in the inaugural season of the new league. Head Coach David Taynor is the main reason for higher expectations at Urbana. Taynor is entering his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater. He has more wins over the last four seasons (26) than the program accumulated in its first 13 years of existence. Under his watch, Urbana has more winning seasons (3) than the team experienced in its first quarter-century. Taynor’s Blue Knights have already made a fantastic first impression at the NCAA Division II level. In 2013, the team

wants to make a similar first impression rushing yards. That accomplishment, coupled with a strong team showing in in the new league. the new league, could greatly bolster The MEC coaches predicted a sixth Mendenhall’s Harlon Hill candidacy. place finish for Urbana, but one coach picked the Blue Knights to win the Nearly all of Mendenhall’s top targets conference outright in 2013. That’s high are back in 2013. Senior wide receiver praise for one of the so-called “new kids Joe Webb (pictured above) has spent on the block”. Eight of the eleven MEC three years building chemistry with his football programs competed as acclaimed quarterback. As a junior, members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season. Some have conference rivalries dating back to the 1920’s. The other two newcomers, Notre Dame College and UVa-Wise, were voted to finish 8th and 9th place, respectively, in the new league. Last year’s WVIAC Champ, the Shepherd Rams, picked up eight of eleven first place votes after making a trip to the NCAA D-II Playoffs in 2012. The Blue Knights won’t have to wait long to find out if they can contend with the likes of a perennial NCAA D-II powerhouse like Shepherd University. The Blue Knights meet the Rams in West Virginia in Week 3. If Urbana is able to pull off the early-season stunner, it’s likely that the team’s preseason AllAmerican quarterback D.J. Mendenhall (pictured above left) will be the architect behind the upset. Mendenhall enters his senior season on the heels of yet another record-smashing year. Guiding the Blue Knights to a 7-4 finish in 2012, Mendenhall’s offense ranked 18th in the country in total yards, racking up 467 yards per contest. The Harlon Hill hopeful was responsible for 19.64 points per game. That was the tenth highest mark by an individual in DII in 2012. Twenty-six teams didn’t average 20 points per game in D-II last season. Mendenhall set single season school marks for completions, passing yards (3,130) and passing TDs (30). Entering his fourth and final season at Urbana, Mendenhall has an outside chance at becoming just the third QB in NCAA D-II history with over 10,000 career passing yards and 2,000 career

Webb became just the second Blue Knight in school history to top 1,000 yards receiving, a feat he accomplished despite missing two full games with a leg injury. The preseason All-American is already Urbana’s all-time leader in receiving yards (2,413), TD receptions (18) and yards per catch (18.01). Webb will be joined by impact receivers Nate Wilburn-Ogletree (64 catches, 610 yards, 10 TDs in 2012), Marc Johnson (30 catches, 585 yards, 7 TDs), and Sanders Sius (29 catches, 439 yards, 2 TDs). The receiving corps is one of the deepest units on the 2013 squad. Experienced veterans also include Alvin Busbee Jr., Joseph Saffold III, and tight ends La’Velle Spivey and David Webb. Spivey stepped up as a starting tight end in 2011 after an injury to the starter. In his first career start, he caught 8 balls for 87 yards and 3 TDs. Urbana’s running game will have to deal with the departure of senior running back and University of Buffalo transfer Jeffvon Gill. Gill was just the second runner in UU history to post a 1,000yard season on the ground. He also led

Paving the way up front for the Urbana offense will be a r e v a m p e d offensive line. Gone are a trio of fifth-year allconference seniors, including guard Andrew Minda and tackles Ethan Oakley and Alex Maxson. Threeyear starters Kyle Wallace and Scott Porter (pictured above) will provide the experience, and a large group of newcomers are currently working hard in camp to fill the three vacant spots.

scheme by battle-tested Blue Knights David McComas (70 tackles, 2 INT), Jake Krupko (46 tackles, 1 INT), Brian Ridley (39 tackles, 2 INT), Kenya Coombs, Reggie Gaither, Nick Lipchek, Frank Marsh and Jhyraun DeMarcia. At linebacker, Urbana lost three of the unit’s top four tacklers. Senior Lamar Ross (55 tackles) will need help from sophomores D’Gary Wallace, Taylor Cayot, and a collection of newcomers to cover Drew Underwood, Roy Harvison and Shane Cahill’s 174 combined tackles in 2012. Up front, the Blue Knights lost four-year starting defensive end Perry Jenkins and his 36.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks over the past two seasons. A couple of other starters have departed as well, but junior Kyle Ferguson remains. Ferguson finished his sophomore campaign with 58 tackles, including nine for a loss and four sacks. Other returners on the Urbana defensive line include Curtis Galloway Jr., Nick Thompson and Chris Basil. Urbana enters the 2013 season with five returning starters on offense and five on defense, meaning the Blue Knights will rely heavily on another strong Taynor recruiting class to fill the gaps. Many of the newcomers will be expected to play an important role on special teams. Sophomore Blaine Hafner is the early favorite to assume many of the kicking duties in

2013. Hafner has been honing his craft over the past two seasons at Urbana. Last year, he made his only field goal attempt, from 34 yards, and finished 9 for 12 on extra points. Urbana’s 2013 schedule is undoubtedly the toughest schedule in the program’s 29-year history. Urbana opens on the road at the University of Findlay on Thursday, September 5th. The Oilers posted an impressive 7-3 record in one of the toughest conferences in the country last season. The last time Urbana opened its season on a Thursday night on the road under the lights, the Oilers overwhelmed the Blue Knights 4221. That loss came in 2009, Coach Taynor’s second season at the helm and Urbana’s first season against a full NCAA D-II schedule. The following weekend, Urbana hosts rising D-II power and new conference rival Notre Dame College in the schools’ first MEC contest. Week 3 features the aforementioned road trip to preseason MEC favorite Shepherd, which might not even be the Blue Knights’ toughest foe in 2013. For the first time since knocking off the University of Dayton in 2009, Urbana has secured another game against an NCAA D-I FCS opponent. The Blue Knights travel to Southeast Missouri State University on November 2 nd. Urbana’s 2013 schedule concludes at home on November 16th against the University of Charleston, a team picked to finish runner-up to Shepherd in the inaugural season of MEC football.

the squad with 12 TDs, but the Blue Knights are lucky to be left with a pair of punishing ball carriers. Junior David Hill (pictured left) missed some time due to injury last season, but he still finished with 314 yards and 3 TDs. In 2011, Hill was the Freshman of the Year in the GLFC after racking up nearly 600 yards and 7 TDs. Senior Donte Washington has also shown flashes of brilliance in the Blue Knight backfield, including a 7-carry, 81-yard, 2 TD performance in a late-season win last year. The duo will also be aided by Mendenhall’s ability to run. Removing yardage lost from sacks, the QB has already piled up over 2,000 yards on the ground in his three-year career, including a school record 890 as a sophomore. Mendenhall is also the school’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 29 in 33 career games.

Defensively, Urbana will have to deal with key departures at linebacker and defensive end, but the backfield returns as one of the most experienced units on the field for the Blue Knights. Fifth-year senior safety Daniel Goodrum (pictured above right) received preseason AllAmerican accolades after leading the squad in tackles with 84 a year ago. He’ll be joined in Taynor’s 3-3-5 defensive 13

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DAVID TAYNOR

COACH TAYNOR

David Taynor, a 1999 graduate of Urbana University, was named Head Football Coach on April 24, 2008. He became the 9th head football coach at Urbana University. The odds were stacked against Taynor in his first season at the helm of his alma mater. After a brief recruiting period, Taynor's new team tackled the program's first taste of NCAA D-II football. The Blue Knights won their home opener 28-19 over West Virginia Tech, but the team finished the season with 9 straight defeats, including 5 to nationally ranked opponents and 2 in overtime. In 2009, the Blue Knights regrouped under Taynor. With a full season of experience and recruiting under their belt, Taynor's coaching staff propelled Urbana to a 6-5 finish in his second season. The highlight of the year came in the third week as Taynor's upstarts announced their arrival to the D-II world by knocking off a true D-I powerhouse, the University of Dayton. The victory was the program's first against a Division I opponent, and it helped the team tie the school record for wins in a season. The 5-win improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 also tied the school mark for the biggest single season turnaround. Taynor was a senior center and captain on the last team to achieve such a turnaround. Urbana's David vs. Goliath moment at UD could have been written off as a one-hit wonder after the team appeared to have taken a step back in 2010. Urbana began Taynor's third year 1-4 after falling by a combined 8 points to 3 opponents who spent time in the national rankings. An inconsistent kicking game almost caused Urbana to throw in the towel, but Taynor's Blue Knights kept battling. The team finished the year with three straight wins by a combined 77 points. The team's record-setting offense set 9 school records, including points per game (32.3), yards per game (388.1) and passing touchdowns (27). Defensively, senior linebacker Travis Brisco earned the school's first NCAA D-II All-American nod after leading the country in 3 statistical categories. Urbana's 11 wins over 2

Urbana University is proud to sponsor 15 athletic programs in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the nation. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that we find most rewarding. With so many college choices available to students today, I am often asked, "Why is Urbana University the right place for me?" Most often, my answer is that the core attribute of NCAA Division II athletics, known as "Life in Balance", is carried out and practiced in all that we do. At Urbana University it is universally accepted that all students and employees are equipped with a unique skill set of strengths and weaknesses. We constantly seek to accentuate those strengths and nurture those weaknesses in an effort to form a collective unified body of positive results. It's what makes success a reality and not merely just a dream at Urbana University. Spearheaded by our move to the NCAA, we have created a culture of life in balance. This is not merely an athletics-only initiative but one that permeates our entire campus. The core attributes of life in balance are learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness.
