Dear Friends of Up with People, Several months ago, I had the privilege to reconnect with friends that I had not seen in many years at my 20-year cast reunion. Traveling internationally with my peers in 1987, I never would have thought that one day I would be the President and Chief Executive Officer of Up with People. As a 17 year old boy, I wasn’t even sure that I would make the grades to graduate from high school! The year my cast traveled, with a purpose to make a change in ourselves and in the communities in which we stayed, a spark was lit within me to create the same change in everyone I met along the way. My generation, and those before me, have seen years of turmoil with war in Iraq, genocide in Cambodia, starvation throughout Africa, and multitudes of tragedies around the world. The difference is that those of us involved in Up with People have also seen young people make a positive difference by spreading the message of inclusion and acceptance among races, cultures, and nationalities. Up with People ceased operations in 2000 and reopened in 2003 with a new model focused on increased volunteerism, leadership and a challenge to build an organization that could be relevant to the issues of the 21st Century. During the past 18 months, we have seen young people working side by side in local communities to help build homes while breaking down racial barriers in parts of the southern US. We have seen our students lift the hopes of residents in New Orleans during their darkest hour to rebuild a community destroyed by natural disaster. We have seen students from all parts of the world give hope to orphaned children in the slums of Thailand. Our students make an impact. Up with People makes an impact. We know, now more than ever, that this organization is needed and the work we do continues to make a difference. In an ever-changing world, we strive to continue our journey as an ever-changing leadership organization enabling young people to make a positive change in communities. It is our goal to be present in emerging countries to inspire individuals, neighborhoods, and communities at a time when positive social change is necessary. Be a leader. Pass it on.

Dear Friends, Alumni and Supporters, An investment in the future was made back in 1965 when the founder of Up with People, J. Blanton Belk, along with several friends, committed to making a positive change in the world. They understood that young people have an important message to give to the world, but that alone, their voices would not be heard. Over the past year, this investment has grown with the help of 600 generous individuals, companies, and foundations who have supported us financially in an effort to adapt a new vision for Up with People in the 21st century. Collectively, these individuals recognize the inspiration that Up with People brings to communities around the world and that it is as important today as it was to the founder’s 40 years ago. Up with People continues to bring together incredible young people who welcome the chance to rise above communication, ideological, and cultural challenges. Those of you who had the opportunity to see a cast this past year experienced first hand, the true spirit of young people in today’s world. We couldn’t be more proud of the motivated individuals who have helped carry the Up with People torch in 2006 and 2007. When we see what is happening once again around the world with the students in our casts, we are motivated more than ever to get behind the new vision of Up with People The Board of Directors and the Worldwide Staff of Up with People have been working diligently to build trust with our alumni and long time friends and supporters of the organization – to show all of you and the world that Up with People is as relevant today as ever. Many aspects of how we operate have evolved since the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s, but the mission and message of Up with People have remained steadfast. Building bridges of understanding, we continue to inspire those we meet to come together and meet the needs of their communities, countries and the world. As a student alumnus of Up with People, a former staff member, current Chairman of the Board of Directors, and an advocate of our vision, I thank you for your support and encourage you to continue investing in this organization for years to come.
