Place Standard Tool

Natural Space Through the place standard tool one of the most recognisable areas for future improvement in the Uptown area is through improvement of natural spaces on the site. Currently there is limited green space in Uptown which also impacts play and recreation in the Uptown area. Public transport Currently Uptown is well connected by public transport such as busses and train especially with the addition of the new CRL, however we also recognise potential improvement in how cycle and walkways can be connected to public transport systems. Traffic & Parking Upper Symond Street is a multi-lane road which makes crossing for pedestrians less safe, pedestrians do not have priority in these areas. There are also major junction on the site that have potential for future development to help prioritise pedestrian movement over cars and make them safer. Feeling Safe Upper Symond Street one of the busier roads on the site is generally well lit and more movement of people making this area feel safer. There is potential future improvement to help create a greater sense of safety on some of the less populated and well lit streets in the Uptown site.

Extract from Master plan Scheme presentation: Parts highlighting big moves as a result of analysis and research Uptown has had a history of occupancy. Whether settling or stopping by, gathering and community have been significantly evident throughout history. Taking on the notion of Ahi Ka - referring to taking whenua (land rights) through visible occupation and use of land. This was shown through the practice of sharing food, gathering and stopping by to trade. The new development of Maungawhau station has the opportunity to respond to Mana Tangata, to emphasise the importance of people, their well-being and their sense of place in the community. An environment that is safe, conclusive, healthy and protected.

Connecting the site to a series of smaller pocket parks to create green links is a great opportunity. We propose activating green spaces and green links around the site with Basque Park. One response to this is to fabricate an elevated boardwalk across the site. The structure is accessible from the entry at Mt Eden Road and from Ruru Street. The purpose is to activate more green space to promote an increase in native birds and plants in the wider uptown area. The boardwalk will include smaller native plantings and grasses to help connect and create green links in and around the site. A safe space will be created for pedestrians to walk, relax, eat, and socialise. This intervention celebrates the protection of the environment, reflecting the principle of Kaitiakitanga, a practice that refers to the important connection between humans and the natural world.

These green links can be through street tree corridors and green pathways, introducing more native planting in response to a lack of green spaces and planting on site. This will also provide shade and improve the streetscape, promoting an increase in walking.

Our scheme aims to maintain community involvement, comprising many cultures, local businesses and people. Modern-day Uptown is made up of people from the combination of all neighbouring suburbs, areas that were once separated because of a history of roads and highway developments. Uptown, as a community itself, is now inviting the opportunity for a community agency, engagement, and to return to the heritage. We often see stations and stops as places where we are made to wait rather than explore. We hope to propose a site that activates engagement with the local community, a place to stop by rather than pass through—essentially creating a community in the site, in the heart of Uptown—a community within a community.
