Moments To Remember 10/5-15/96 - With the athletic department facing a budget deficit of more than $100,000, a recommendation is made to cut the baseball program. Head Coach Bubba Dorman rallies his team and several members of the community over a three-week period and the recommendation is never acted on. 2/16/97 – Jay Brendel, who hit .212 in his first season with the Rifles in 1996, went 6-for-6 in a 27-7 win over Mars Hill. Still the school-record holder with six hits (on four singles, a double and a homer), Brendel went on to hit .327 with eight homers as a senior. 2/16/97 – Stanley Moss hits for the cycle during his own five-hit game against Mars Hill, finishing 5-for-6 with three runs and five RBI. He singled in the first and homered later in the nine-run inning. After a second-inning single, he tripled in the fourth and doubled in the fifth to complete the feat. 4/16-17/97 - On back-to-back days, USCS uses offensive onslaughts to subdue two 28-11 opponents, beating North Greenville, 21-14, and Limestone, 16-10. Jason Cole goes 8-for-11 with four runs, two doubles, a homer and nine RBI to lead the Rifles. Stanley Moss also went 8-for-12 with seven runs, five doubles and four RBI in the games and Mike Ryan went 7-for-12 with six runs. 1997 – Mike Ryan becomes the first Rifle to earn Peach Belt Freshman of the Year honors. Ryan hits .348 with 32 runs, four homers and 34 RBI.
Jason Cole led USCS through a two-day offensive onslaught, going 8-for-11 with nine RBI in wins over North Greenville and Limestone.
