Moments To Remember 2/20/88 – Don Brock and Chris Cranford, despite walking 13 batters, combine to one-hit Davidson in the season-opener, leading the Rifles to a 9-3 win in the seven-inning game. 2/20-3/17/88 – The Rifles open the season by winning a school-record 17 straight games, including wins over Davidson, Limestone, Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, ETSU and USC Aiken. 4/20/88 – USC Spartanburg downs Erskine, 12-4, for Head Coach John Daurity’s 100th win at the school. He reached the mark faster than any coach in school history, just three years. 1988 – Russ Pearson leads the NAIA in runs scored, finishing with 72 in 42 games, an average of 1.71 per game. Lindsay Robinson is seventh in the nation at 1.51 per game. Three Rifles (Rick Given, Todd Ellison and Lindsay Robinson) are among the top 10 in the nation in RBI per game. 4/22/88 – Don Brock ties Eric Hunter’s mark for single-season wins by winning his eighth decision of the year, throwing a complete-game four-hitter in an 11-5 win over Gardner-Webb. 6/88 – Five USC Spartanburg players (Don Brock, Rick Given, Ken Penland, Lindsay Robinson and Leonard Thigpen) are selected in the MLB June draft, a school record.
Don Brock posts an 8-2 mark with a 3.64 ERA in 81.2 innings. He was inducted into the Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
