Facts You Should Know • USC Upstate was ranked fourth amongst Public Baccalaureate Colleges in the South according to the 2009 College Rankings by U.S. News & World Report. • USC Upstate is among the fastest growing universities in the State, now employing 650 full- and part-time faculty and staff and enrolling 5,000 students, reflecting the diversity of Upstate South Carolina. • Located in one of the most politically significant hotbeds in the nation, USC Upstate received visits from Republican Presidential candidate John McCain and former U.S. president Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea Clinton, while campaigning for his wife, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2007. • According to U.S. News and World Report, USC Upstate is one of the 10-most ethnically diverse colleges in the South with a Diversity Index of 0.46. It is the most racially diverse public school in South Carolina. • From its founding, the University opened its doors to all races. Today, with a minority enrollment exceeding 30 percent and faculty representation increased to 14 percent, the institution is widely regarded as a leading example of interracial cooperation, cultural pluralism, equal opportunity, access and equity. • Of the University’s 5,000 enrolled students, 71 nations are represented among the student body, reflecting the Upstate’s international character. • The implementation of a 10-year, $150 million master plan that focuses on the development of the northern segment of the Spartanburg campus has dramatically increased classroom space, academic support facilities, parking and roadways, housing and athletic/recreational facilities. • The Susan Jacobs Arboretum features a 300-seat amphitheatre, a meandering creek lined with stones and boulders, lighted walkways and foliage indigenous to the area among its 12 acres. • Forty years after its founding, USC Upstate boasts an alumni base of more than 17,000, of which 80 percent of these graduates remain in the Upstate to build their lives and careers. • In the past 10 years, the campus has gone through a dramatic infrastructure makeover, including the building of the Louis P. Howell Athletic Complex, the Readiness Center, Palmetto House, Magnolia House, the Jacobs Arboretum, the Health Education Complex and the soon to be completed George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics in downtown Spartanburg.
