2009-10 Upstate Men’s Basketball Spartans

The USC Upstate Sports Medicine Staff is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries for all 17 intercollegiate sports teams. It is our mission to provide excellent health care with a primary emphasis on educating the studentathlete in health maintainance, as well as injury care and prevention. This emphasis extends to maintaining safety in practice and game situations, drug education programs, staying current on treatment and rehabilitation techniques and following NCAA and NATA protocols. The commitment to the student-athletes and coaches is spread over the areas of service, care and education. The USC Upstate Sports Medicine Staff, led by Associate Athletics Director Michael Sandago, has more than 40 years of experience in prep, collegiate or professional athletics.

Michael Sandago Assistant AD/Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine Eric English

Assistant Athletic Trainer Eric English is in his fourth year as assistant athletic trainer in the sports medicine department at USC Upstate. In addition to his duties in athletic training, he also serves as an instructor in the physical education department. English has an extensive background in athletic training. He has served as the clinical coordinator for sports medicine for the North Broward Hospital System (Fla.) from 2001-06 overseeing 22 athletic trainers. In addition, he was a teacher and athletic trainer for Broward County Public Schools. He was the head athletic trainer at Western High School from 1997-2001 and at Cypress Bay High School from 2001-06. A native of Washington Court House, Ohio, he played football and wrestled for Miami Trace High School for three years. He moved with his family to Spartanburg after his junior year and graduated from Dorman High School in 1982. English and his wife, Kim, have a daughter, Sarah.

Brent Smith

Assistant Athletic Trainer Brent Smith is in his sixth year as an assistant athletic trainer at USC Upstate. Smith came to USC Upstate after working with the sports medicine department of the Cape Fear Wild Cats Arena Football League team in 2004. Prior to his stint with the Wild Cats, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at UNC Pembroke from 2002-04 while working on his master’s degree in physical education. He assisted with men’s soccer, wrestling and baseball at UNCP.

Dr. Steven Singleton

While in graduate school, he also worked as a physical therapist aid for Raleigh Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Specialists in 2003 and was an intern with the Carolina Cobras Arena Football League team in 2002. He worked with the N.C. State football team as an intern from 2001-02. Smith graduated from UNC Pembroke in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. While at the school he served as a student athletic trainer working with the volleyball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, track and field and cheerleading teams. Smith and his wife, Karen, were married on June 3, 2006 and have a newborn son, Hudson.

Team Physician

Dr. Steven Singleton serves as the team physician for USC Upstate athletics. Dr. Singleton provides on-site care for Spartan athletes as well as game coverage. With more than a decade of experience, he is an expert at diagnosing problems and designing programs intended to achieve optimal results. The physician, athletic training staff and student-athlete work together as a team toward the goal of full recovery. Dr. Singleton has treated patients from all walks of life, including recreational and elite athletes from all over the world. Upstate athletes also benefit from a relationship with Proaxis Physical Therapy. The professionals at Proaxis bring together innovative methodology, advanced research and proven skills to achieve excellent results. Dr. Steven Singleton, started his own sports medicine practice in 2009 after a distinguished career at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas and will continue his relationship with Upstate athletics. He is a sports medicine specialist with expertise in shoulder, elbow, knee and foot/ankle reconstructive surgery. A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Singleton served his fellowship with the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in 1997. Prior to his move to Spartanburg, Dr. Singleton was the team orthopedic surgeon for the Texas Rangers and Fort Worth Cats baseball clubs.

Deanna Rosato

Assistant Athletic Trainer Deanna Rosato is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at USC Upstate. Rosato came to Upstate after completing the requirements for a Master’s degree in Applied Exercise Physiology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. While at the school, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer working with the football and softball programs. Prior to her stint at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, she served as a student athletic trainer at Oregon State while pursuing her undergraduate degree in athletic training. She was a student under Michael Sandago, Upstate’s current Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, during her first three years of college. Rosato worked closely with the Beavers softball and men’s basketball programs and graduated in 2007. Rosato is ATC certified and a member of the NATA and SCATA organizations. She is originally from Lafayette, La., but moved to Katy, Texas, while in high school and graduated from Cinco Ranch High School.
