music BIG NAMES HEADED TO THE CAPITAL REGION THIS SUMMER

By Bob Goepfert Perhaps the easiest way to illustrate the high level of national and international acts playing the area this summer is to point to Independence Day weekend.

Three of the world’s best-known and beloved talents will play the area the same weekend. July 5, Paul McCartney will play at the Times Union Center in Albany. At Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, Phish — the jam band equivalent of the Beatles — will offer three shows July 3-5. Nearby in Massachusetts, the legendary James Taylor will perform July 3-4 at Tanglewood, and he’ll be at SPAC on July 19.

And that’s not all. The other surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr, will play June 10 at the Palace Theatre in Albany with his All Star Band.

Also at the Palace this summer is Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers on June 20, Diana Ross will perform June 24 at the Albany venue. Aug. 14, Jackson Browne is coming to the Palace.

At SPAC, it’s a who’s who of touring musical acts. Dave Matthews Band will be there May 30-31 for two shows; Journey and Steve Miller Band will play June 14; and Lionel Richie comes to SPAC on July 25.

Aug. 3, Rascal Flatts will off a star-filled month at SPAC. There will be several strong double bills that month. Kiss plays with Def Leppard on Aug 5. Alice Cooper will perform with Motley Crue on Aug. 26, and Chicago and REO Speedway will play on the same bill Aug. 19.

If the mega-stars aren’t performing at SPAC, they are at the Times Union Center in Albany, which boasts Justin Timberlake on July 16 and Bruno Mars on July 20.

Even the smaller venues are hot. The Egg has a super summer line-up, with acts like Melissa Etheridge (June 14) and Yes (July 6). The Egg also has a couple of fun-looking comedy shows upcoming, including Tracy Morgan on June 22 and Cheech and Chong on Aug. 1. It’s another great summer season of pop music superstars!

Tanglewood, in Lenox, Mass., is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Orchestra. It also hosts the Festival for Contemporary Music July 17-21. A couple of highlights at Tanglewood are Renee Fleming performing on opening night July 5, John Williams’ Film Night Aug. 2, the performances of Leonard Bernstein’s score for “Candide” on Aug. 16 and the showing of “The Wizard of Oz” with the BSO accompanying the film on Aug.22. Free concert overview

By Bob Goepfert One of the best things about summer is the free music concerts that are offered in most area communities. There is something available almost every night of the week and remarkably they each seem to have their own identities.

Rockin’ on the River, which takes place Wednesdays in Troy beginning June 18, specializes in tribute bands. This year, you’ll see The Grateful Dead on June 25, Michael Jackson on Aug. 13 and Queen on Aug. 20 and several other great bands from the past. A Zac Brown tribute show will be held July 23, and the real Zac Brown Band will perform Aug. 24 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs.

Upbeat on the Roof – the roof being the top of the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs — has the most diverse talent of the all the free music series. About half the acts are new to the series this year.

Every Friday, you can expect to find jazz, hip-hop, funk and soul and gospel — and that’s just the June 13 opening concert with The Chronicles. However, to give an idea of the range of music to be found at Upbeat on the Roof on July 18 Hot Club of Saratoga, a gypsy jazz quintet, will perform. On July 25, Linda Mac and the Country Memories will offer a night of hillbilly and country honky-tonk.

The granddaddy of free concerts is Alive at Five, with performances every Thursday at Albany’s Corning Preserve. The biggest name this season is Grand Funk Railroad on Aug. 7, but the amphitheater will be offering reggae June 26, R&B July 10 and country July 24, among others.

Don’t overlook Saturday nights at Powers Park in Troy, where every week you will find a theme night — the biggest nights promise to be the Dance Nights on July 26, Aug. 16 and Aug. 23.

Looking over the schedules, you might notice there is free music available every week from Tuesday through Sunday, so some nights choices have to be made. For example, on Wednesdays not only does Rockin’ on the River offer fun, but some Wednesdays the Empire Plaza offers national acts on the mall. The Pruyn House in Latham also will offer ethnic music and food Wednesdays, and Shepard Park in Lake George, a short drive north, has great entertainment.

Put it all together and this summer you’ll hardly have a free night — or a night that isn’t free.

The streets in the heart of downtown Troy shut down and are filled with music, art, performances, food and drink. This year organizers are striving to emphasize the art in Troy with live art demos, the annual sidewalk chalk drawing contest and more. Note: Performance times are subject to change.

Troy Pig Out This Kansas City BBQ-sanctioned event is one of the most loved festivals in the Capital Region. Two days of competitors duke it out for best BBQ, music, fireworks and some of the area’s best food vendors. The event also benefits the Northeast Kidney Foundation.

By Bob Goepfert The only thing you can predict about summer theater is it is impossible to see it all.

Nothing else is certain. Sometimes the most anticipated show falls flat and another work which seems ho-hum is a delightful surprise.

But since hope does spring eternal, I am looking forward to “The Whale” at Adirondack Theatre Festival in Glens Falls. It’s a drama about a 600-pound man eating himself to death whose teenage daughter – with issues of her own – makes an unexpected visit to his apartment.

(July 10-19.)

I am also eager to see “Hands on a Hardbody,” a musical about 10 people who must outlast the others in keeping their hands on a hard body truck in order to win the vehicle. You wonder why someone would enter such an endurance contest? By the end of the show, you’ll know. (July 1-26).

The sleeper of the Williamstown Theatre Festival season might be the “The Visit.” It tells the tale of the richest woman on earth who returns to the town of her birth to make a shocking deal with the poverty-stricken locals.

It was the last collaboration between the team of Kander and Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago) and has a book by Terrance McNally (Full Monty, Kiss of the Spider Woman). Adding to the luster, it stars Chita Rivera and Roger Rees and is directed by John Doyle. (July 31-August 17.)

The find at Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Mass., might be the world-premiere of “Cedars” which stars two-time Tony Awardwinner James Naughton, who will be directed by his daughter Keira Naughton. It is a dark drama about an emotionally troubled man who comes to visit his father who is in a nursing home. (July 23-August 9.)

At Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass., I’m looking forward to an adaptation of “Henry IV, parts I and II.” (Aug. 2-31) But this year their hit might be “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a Christopher Durang comedy that won the Tony in 2013. (Aug. 6-Sept. 14.)

I always look forward to the Barrington Stage Company’s Music Theatre Lab, where merging artists create new and exciting work. his year there are two events, “The Golem of Havana” (July 23-Aug. 9) and “Romance in Hard Times” (Aug. 14-31).
