TO A NEW YEAR & NEW BEGINNINGS!

Your Window to UVCE

Editorial On behalf of TEAM SAMPADA, here’s wishing you a HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s 2019 already! Yet another new year has begun even before we could realize before we could comprehend with how 2018 passed away in a blink. Talking about New Year, I feel it is one of those occasions which sparkles in everyone the thought of starting a new resolution with start of a new year . Some set the goal to achieve better, some to become more fitter, some to reach more success, some hope to enhance their personal happiness and so on. On similar lines, why don’t we think let’s make the resolution to make UVCE a more better place for students and generations to follow so as to be nurtured rightfully into being great engineers of tomorrow. YES! An for such a resolution to be realized and turned to reality what is significant or is essential is us as Alumni joining hands to work for the betterment of our Alma Mater. When we look at UVCE and complain saying the facilities are not right, students have to trained more, the infrastructure has to be improved and current technology has to be installed in the premises, we forget one very important point. And that is how we all as Alumni, simultaneously people who hold powerful positions in the engineering or IT industry, influential government jobs or even as simple as knowledged individuals have the potential to apply efforts in our capacity and aide for college development. We can help drive our companies in visiting UVCE for placements, we can visit the college and mentor students, take seminars in fields we hold expertise in, donate computer systems or lab equipment to the college and list of myriad possibilities that we hold in our hands. We are currently seeing all the issues about instability circulating UVCE, why don’t we as alumni go and voice our opinions about this and save the dignity of our alma mater? Rather than complaining that UVCE has become this way, why don’t we stand as community to support UVCE so that no such instability issues are tamed towards our college. We should not always stay back and hope for the college to reach us Alumni like it is mostly done in other colleges. But why can’t we take the first step? Moreover, we need to engross ourselves ore into details of this institution. WE may propose a solution and stand a back, but researching and providing our best support to college in order to implement that solution becomes vital. This institution has played a pivotal role in transforming us from a student to letting us into the professional world and progress. Hence we can take this hard step for our Alma Mater’s sake. I agree that we may not have a flawless coordination with administration or faculty to implement this in a jiffy, it takes time, approvals and bit more effort than it would normally take but in the end it will al be worth it. Over the years, we as Team VisionUVCE have been thriving to execute initiatives for UVCE and have faced few difficulties which need us to push more but in the end it’s all worth it when we see the students being aided because of it. Let’s become more proactive, more dedicated and most importantly more involved into the college to understand the needs rather than doing a surface evaluation and complaining. Let’s do everything our capacity. Moreover, our effort howsoever hard it maybe will end up setting an example to our current students whom we can hope to continue in this direction otherwise if we do not take the step, UVCE’s much known network will soon crumble and see only further deterioration So with beginning of this New Year, lets revive our spirits and start new efforts to make our beloved UVCE find it’s glory again! -Chitra S Reddy, Batch of 2016 ECE

Saga of UVCE Alumni Association

We received a video over the WhatsApp few days back, which was about the journey of UVCE Alumni Association and its current status. Many of the facts were based on the writeups that we had published sometime back :  On Mar 12th,2018, we had published a blog “Revive the Alumni Association” with an online petition, which was supported by senior eminent alumni like Dr M R Sreenivasan, Dr VK Aatre, Prof Roddam Narasimhan and others  On Mar 27th,2018, we compiled the timeline that listed all the events that had taken place in the whole process of approaching UVCE Alumni Association and published one more blog called “ Save UVCE Alumni Association” which gives a the detailed background about these happenings.  On Apr 24th, 2018, we provided all the updates about Elections and how it was not informed to anyone in the blog “Update on UVAA Elections”. There again we had requested to conduct a fair and democratic process  On May 13th,2018, post all the confusions, we had published one blog “ Latest News on UVAA Elections and SGM” which spoke about the misleading things happening at the Association. Now, we felt in this video, we have some more updates saying the Govt Secretariat had sent a Notice to UVAA asking “Why Administrator should not be appointed based on Dep Registrar Report?” to which there was no response by the office bearers. Instead they got a “Stay Order” from the High Court. This again is going to be a legal battle, for which few alumni wanted to be party along with the Govt Department. As of now, the case is pending and we request everyone to watch the video and take action in whatever capacity possible. Ask questions, Spread awareness - something which are very easy and does not require any of the resources apart from your time. Check the video here

How do we do our bit? Alumni Pledge Rs. 14 Crores To IIT Madras CHENNAI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras alumni of the 1993 batch, which is having its silver reunion this year, have pledged to raise Rs. 12 crore, on the occasion of Reunion Day, hosted by IIT Madras today, to support the campus infrastructure, research and development, and student innovations. Further, the 1983 Batch also pledged another Rs. 2 crore. Over 300 alumni from across batches took part in the meet. IIT Madras officials lauded the efforts of alumni. "Many important researches that must be done falls within gaps of existing funding sources and researchers find it difficult to raise funds. CSR funding can help scale up these projects, particular those with social impact, to support pilot scale deployments," Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said while addressing the reunion day celebrations. Source: NDTV We have shared this news article not to just highlight the money factor, but to shed light on the fact that how an alumni community can come together to “GIVE BACK. We wanted to highlight the factor that how important an Alumnus is to a college and society and building the community is very essential. UVCE has larger alumni base than most other colleges in India. We need to work towards collate the information and come together for a cause !!

UVCE in NEWS University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering to appoint teachers on contract for NBA accreditation BENGALURU: University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country, is all set to seek accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). But there’s a hurdle: It doesn’t have enough teachers. With adequate teaching staff being one of the key parameters for accreditation, the college has proposed to appoint teachers on contractual basis for six months in all its six departments. A proposal to this effect was discussed in the Bangalore University syndicate meeting and is up for consideration. As per current figures, the six departments have a sanctioned strength of about 177 teaching staff, of which 91 posts are vacant. This means the student-teacher ratio is 60:1, which is far from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms of 15:1. The vacant posts include 39 of assistant professor, 28 of associate professor and 24 of professor. According to NBA norms, it can’t give accreditation to a college which doesn’t fulfil AICTE guidelines and lacks facilities for students. “In 2008, UVCE had enough teachers. Since then, many have retired but new appointments have not been made,” said a senior faculty member at the college. UVCE has about 90 guest faculty members who are paid on an hourly basis. UVCE may lose 10 per cent seats due to shortage of staff BENGALURU: One of the most sought-after government engineering colleges in the state, the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Bengaluru, may lose 10 per cent of its seats for the coming academic year. This was due to shortage of permanent teaching faculty members at the institute. The All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has communicated to the institute that the screening committee constituted by it has recommended decreasing the number of seats. A copy of the communication from AICTE is available with The New Indian Express. As per information, the committee has identified this shortage as one of the major drawbacks and suggested a cut in the number of seats. UVCE losing 10 per cent seats will be huge loss to students looking to get admission under CET. As per details from the Karnataka Examinations Authority, UVCE is the only government college in the state where seats get filled up fast. “This is the only government engineering college that is sought by students like private colleges,” said an official of KEA. The total number of sanctioned teaching posts at UVCE are 175, but currently there are just 91 permanent faculty members. The government has also put a freeze on recruitment to fill permanent staff, so the college has been running with the help of guest faculty members from the last 10 years. Authorities of the college said they are going to meet AICTE officials and request it to reconsider its decision. “Even the guest teachers we have are equally qualified and we will explain this to officials,” said an official. “We are going to communicate about this to the ViceChancellor and Higher Education Minister,” an official said. Namma UVCE Survey To make things a bit more interesting around here, we thought how about running a survey in college to gather our student’s opinions and make a check on how aware they are of activities ongoing in namma UVCE. So here’s what they had in mind! Have you heard of Adhamya?

Close to 68% of the students seems to know well about Adhamya and there is close 33% of students who haven’t heard or not sure. Firstly Team Adhamya being new seems to have kickstarted with good efforts to reach to the students and should keep continuing the initiative and make it more bigger to garner the rest.

How informative is Sampada? 70% of our students agreed to receiving SAMPADA regularly but the survey seems to show that about 48% of the students find the information or content in the newsletter be more aligned for them. We have taken these thoughts in mind and definitely plan on making our coming editions more exciting and intriguing for the students!

What do you feel about the CBCS Pattern? Seems like only 54% of our students have been able to get a hold of understanding the CBCS Grading system implemented henceforth at UVCE. Our UVCE faculty must push forth to give a more clear understanding to the rest of the students so that they can plan their academic and exam approach accordingly.

INSPIRON 2018

What do you feel about our College Fests? Almost 50% of our students agree that our fest need more improvement or do not meet much expectations! Maybe the students need to work more on integrating more creativity concepts to appeal more crowd.

FIESTA 2018

SUMMARY OF THE STUDENT THOUGHTS Infra doesn't matter. All that matters is the people in UVCE. By the day UVCE has a charm of it's own. Needs a lot of improvement . There is renovation work going on But still needs a lot more

The infrastructure is really in a bad condition right now. But since the construction is going on right now, hope to see a better college in a couple of months.

Actually its like an ancient monument. If we rejuvenate then it will lose its identity. it is comfortable now but have to increase some facilities like sanity and water facility

I can see that it is changing for the better. But the change part, I don't like as I'm allergic to smoke and dust, we have a very dusty environment at the moment. Otherwise it is amazing. Also if they could manage the trash in the college it would be amazing Happy about the renovation but I just hope it retains its original design and architecture. It is just now an ordinary college building..it's a monument.

UVCE in NEWS – 2 A series of articles are published during the course of last week and we wanted to bring everything to your notice at one shot. BCU and BU now fight over UVCE Control In the latest round of sparring between Bangalore University (BU) and Bangalore Central University (BCU) over properties at the Central College campus, top officials of both the universities are fighting for the authority of the premier University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). Though UVCE is situated in the BCU campus, the administration is still under BU. However, a few officials in BCU want the college to come under their administration. “During trifurcation, it was clearly mentioned that the properties on the premises of Central College should be handed over to BCU administration. But BU is yet to obey these orders. This has also become one of the properties that we are struggling to save,” a senior BCU official told DH. BCU intends to take up renovation of the century-old building and introduce new courses. UVCE is one of the few technical institutions in the country that has the status of a university. It offers BE, BArch, ME, M.Arch in various disciples of engineer. On the other hand, there is also a proposal to bring UVCE under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) by granting it autonomous status. Confirming the development, Venugopal K R, BU Vice Chancellor and former principal of UVCE said, “Its high time UVCE got autonomous status. None of us (BU and BCU) can claim ownership of the college that offers technical courses. There is a separate university to look after the colleges that offer technical courses. Hence, it better the college that offers technical courses be separate from the varsity that offers general courses. Since UVCE is under BU, we will submit a proposal to VTU to grant it autonomous status”. Source: Deccan Herald (3/1/2019)

Expert panel to decide UVCE’s fate To end the tussle between Bangalore University (BU) and Bangalore Central University (BCU) on taking over University Visvesvaraya College Of Engineering (UVCE), the newly appointed principal secretary higher education department chaired a meeting of vice chancellors of both the universities. Anil Kumar, principal secretary, higher education department, decided to go ahead with the earlier decision, where an expert committee would be formed to decide the fate of the UVCE. “We did not take any new decisions. Both the VCs cleared their stands. So we decided to stick to the old decision, where there was a recommendation for the formation of an expert committee to decide the faith of the institution,” Anil Kumar told DH. The VCs briefed the principal secretary about the situation of the respective universities. As recommended earlier, the expert committee would be formed, which would decide to which university the UVCE should be handed over to. Currently, the UVCE is under the BU administration. But the BCU officials were demanding the control of the institution according to the trifurcation treaty. According to the pact all the immovable property on the Central College campus would belong to the BCU. At present, the BU has taken up the renovation work of the UVCE. “The meeting decided to constitute another committee to look after the Jnana Jyothi auditorium at the BCU campus. As the BU is still holding the authority over the auditorium, this has also become a cause for another tussle. However, the future of UVCE is now completely dependent on the yet to be formed committee. There was also a suggestion to make the institution an autonomous body, but the committee has to decide,” said a senior official of the department. Source: Deccan Herald (8/1/2019)

Heads of depts at UVCE decide to remain with BU All University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) heads of departments have come out with a unanimous resolution to retain the college under Bangalore University (BU) only till it gets an autonomous status. "UVCE is getting grants from various funding agencies considering the fact that it is a constituent college of Bangalore University, which is accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade alongwith Bangalore University. If the college is separated from BU, further grants will not be sanctioned," read a copy of the proceedings, which was signed by all the six heads of departments and three other professors who attended the meeting with the UVCE principal on Saturday.During the trifurcation of BU, a government committee headed by Prof S A Kori had said that UVCE will remain with BU. This was also mentioned in the state gazette. But later, the government had issued another order in June last year stating that as per jurisdiction, UVCE comes under Bengaluru Central University. "Two departments of engineering at Jnana Bharathi have 1,200 students and four departments of engineering in KR Circle have 2,300 students. Awarding degrees by two universities -- BU and BCU -- is not possible," said a senior BU official. Experts opined that UVCE should be under BU at least till it gets autonomous status. In the past, an amount of `25 crore was sanctioned by the government for renovation because when the government proposed shifting the two departments, students protested. "Teachers should be given an option if UVCE has to be transferred to other universities as they are appointed as BU faculty and all the departments of UVCE are statutorily created as Department of Studies of BU. Students and teachers have already chosen to be with BU and they opine that there should be one entity, and may not agree for shifting," read the resolution. UVCE has already got National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation under BU and it will be easier to obtain autonomous status. "It was unanimously resolved by the principal, chairpersons, teachers and students to retain UVCE under BU only," said the resolution signed by HN Ramesh, Principal of UVCE.
