Holiday Swags

Cooper Landing School Fundraiser

Support Cooper Landing School Students by purchasing a Holiday Swag. The suspended spruce boughs are twined together then adorned with handmade bows, spruce cones, and ornaments. Swags are made entirely by students and staff. All funds raised support the student activity fund.

History of the Swag

The swag fundraiser was started by Joyce Koppert, former teacher at Cooper Landing School. She thought of the idea when she was living in Oregon and was helping her niece and nephew come up with ideas for Christmas presents. The swag shape was chosen because it was easier to make compared to a circular wreath. Since then, it has become our school’s tradition. Every November, we dedicated a day to assembling the swags.

Cooper Landing Emergency Services

CLES Reminds Residents of Winter Driving Conditions

Cooper Landing received its first significant snowfall on Wednesday, October 25th. The same day, CLES responded to a motor vehicle accident with 3 vehicles and 8 occupants involved. With the assistance of Central Emergency Services, 6 patients were transported to the hospital. Five of the patients had to be extricated using the jaws of life. While the accident is currently being investigated by AST, it is believed that speed and lack of road familiarity in winter driving conditions played a major part in the accident.

CLES wants to reiterate the importance of winter driving! With the transition from fall to winter, the roadways around Cooper Landing are constantly changing dependent on the weather. Driving safely in winter can be challenging even for the most experienced driver. 17% of all crashes occur during winter driving conditions making it clear that we could all use a reminder.

PREPARE for the trip; PROTECT yourself; and PREVENT crashes on the road

Ready your vehicle – Perform regular tune-ups and maintenance. Pay special attention to batteries, wipers, coolant, tires and other systems. Be sure to remove snow, ice and dirt from the windows, sensors, headlights taillights and back-up camera before getting on the road. Ready yourself – DRIVE SLOWLY!! Increase your following distance. Give yourself more time getting to your destination during the winter months.

Ready for an Emergency – Even if you and your vehicle are prepared, crashes happen. Make sure your vehicle is stocked to help get you out of trouble or to keep you safe until help arrives. Keep blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and flares or emergency lights in your vehicle. Even if you don’t need them, they can be used to help someone else in need on the road.

Safe Driving: Rain, Sleet, Snow or Otherwise

Winter driving demands special care; safe driving is a year-round habit. You and everyone in your vehicle should be wearing seat belts for every ride. Children should be in age- and size-appropriate child seats. Never drive after drinking. Never drive when distracted by an electronic device or anything else. Those are the essentials for safe driving, whatever the weather.
