Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center Greetings Members,

Board Of Directors

Whew! What a busy summer it has been. We have had many challenges the past three years but as a community we have supported each other and given of ourselves to keep our town vital. The world is facing many changes and as a small community it is with strength of that community spirit that we will continue to enjoy our town and remain a place of beauty and peace. We’ve been busy behind the scenes keeping the Upper Kenai Visitor Guide stocked throughout the Peninsula. A huge thank you to Kate Stevenson for helping distribute the Guides and for planting/up-keeping the beautiful flowers at the Chamber office and Museum. They are a cheerful greeting to the many travelers stopping by. As we approach the end of the season, don’t forget to capture the best of the summer in pictures for the revamp of the Guide. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Stay healthy! Thank you, Cheryle James & Your Chamber Board

MEET YOUR GUIDES

JJ Brown, owner and head guide, has been

fishing on the Kenai River for over twenty years. Growing up in Maine, JJ has always had a love for all things water and fishing. It was these two passions that first brought him to Alaska back in 2000 to work as a fish-camp employee for Alaska Wildland Adventures. His dream was to become a fishing guide, so that he could do what he loved in the summer as well as what he loved in the winter– skiing. That next summer JJ’s guiding career started. His guiding experience began with Alaska Wildland Adventures, then continued with Alaska River Adventures, Alaska Rivers Company, Alaska Troutfitters, and Kenai Experience. These jobs were the building blocks to JJ following his dreams and starting his own guiding business. JJ explains, “This helped me gain knowledge from so many veterans and pros in the industry. I have worked with great guides and people over the years.” JJ is an easy-going and patient fishing guide. He enjoys sharing his passion with others and is happy to show people the beauty of the Kenai River and the Cooper Landing area. So if you are an avid fisherman looking for a unique trip or just someone wanting to learn a new skill contact Kenai River Trout Anglers to book your Alaskan fishing trip of a lifetime. Matt Rima, is the newest addition to the Kenai River Trout Anglers team. Matt has been guiding fishing trips for the last ten years and has come to call Cooper Landing home. He is a dedicated fisherman that can be found out on the river even on the coldest of winter days. Matt joined the team in 2020. “Kenai River Trout Anglers is lucky to have Matt Rima one of the Kenai best trout fly guides around,” states August 2021 — 3 owner JJ Brown.

The “Why” Behind the Mineshaft Grinder August in Palmer Creek Valley is a special time, when fireweed is in full bloom and alpine ridges may sport sun or snow. In August of 1911, John Hirshey staked four claims at the head of Palmer Creek. Gold sparkled throughout one of the quartz veins in the August light. Hirshey pulled together the finances to build and operate a stamp mill at the mine, which he named Lucky Strike. Lucky Strike was not a one-season wonder. Hirshey’s operation became the most consistent lode gold producer of the Kenai Peninsula.

Cooper Landing Emergency Services “THANK YOU” Cooper Landing Emergency Services held a fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, July 24th at the Birch Ridge Golf Course in Soldotna. This event was a huge success for a number of reasons and we just want to say Thank You!! Without the generous support of our business sponsors and the enthusiastic golfers who signed up to compete, we would not have achieved our goal! Despite the rain, we had 13 teams compete in the tournament and were able to offer everyone a great meal at the conclusion of the tournament. We would be remiss if we didn’t recognize and thank John & Carrie Williams for coordinating the entire event; Birch Ridge Golf Course for hosting the event at such a great venue; local Cooper Landing businesses who donated food and drinks; and all the CLES volunteers who came

out to help make this event a success! If you did not make it this year, we hope to make this an annual event and have already reserved the course for July 23, 2022 for next years tournament. We hope to see you there! Again, thank you to all for making this such a huge success! THANK YOU SO MUCH! -Cooper Landing Emergency Services Board of Directors & Volunteers.
