How to Get Here

Anchorag

Most visitors drive from Anchorage along the Seward Highway. It takes an hour to get to the Peninsula and less than two hours to reach any of the communities. But take your time!

The highway is actually a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road. Along the way you’ll be treated to spectacular wilderness vistas. Watch for Dall sheep, mountain goats and humanoids (rock climbers) along the cliffs. You may also catch glimpses of kite surfers and paddleboarders playing and beluga whales chasing salmon up Turnagain Arm. As you turn south, coastal vistas give way to forested mountainscapes. Throughout your journey, we encourage you to take advantage of the multiple pullouts for safe viewing. Many feature interpretive signs and spotting scopes. Enjoy!

Weather, Climate and Seasons Like everywhere in Alaska, the weather can vary greatly no matter what the season. So come prepared with multiple layers of clothing. Top that off with a warm hat, a sturdy rain jacket and you’ll enjoy your stay no matter what the weather.

Summer (June, July and August): The sun barely sets, the salmon are running, and people are energized by all the daylight. In general, June is the driest, July the warmest, and August the rainiest month. Daytime temps range 60°-80°F; night and early mornings, 40°-60°F.

Winter (November - March): This is the time to see the Aurora Borealis and enjoy outdoor snow activities. Temperatures range from -30F to +40F. February and March are the best for snow, sun and winter activities.

Spring & Fall (April, May, September, & October): These months feature fewer crowds and longer sunsets that bathe the scenery in a magical light. It’s a photographer’s dream. Rules in Bear Country

Bears are inherently curious, intelligent and faster than they look. They do not like to be surprised or harassed. Whether you’re out hiking, camping, fishing, biking or otherwise enjoying the outdoors, always be “bear aware” and remember, you are in their home. Keep Your Distance Give bears plenty of space. View and photograph from a safe distance. Don’t Surprise a Bear — Make Noise! When biking or walking trails, sing, talk loudly or shout out frequently so bears know you’re coming. Avoid thick brush and hike in a group. Don’t Feed or Accidentally Attract Bears It is illegal (and foolish) to feed bears on purpose or by not securing food, dishes or garbage in your vehicle or in bear-proof containers. In the backcountry, hang food between trees, out of their reach. Don’t Let Bears Get Your Fish - If a bear approaches while you are fishing, STOP FISHING! - If you have a fish on, either let out slack so the fish does not splash or cut your line. - Immediately bleed caught fish (in the water), cut all waste into small pieces and toss into deep, fast moving water. Don’t Run If a bear notices you, stand your ground. Running will only trigger its chase instinct and no one can outrun a bear. Instead, talk in a normal voice. If it doesn’t run off, make more noise. If it charges, stand your ground; it will likely be a bluff.

Poisonous Berries

A deadly toxic berry in Alaska is the baneberry. It has clusters of shiny white or red berries with a black spots on each end. They taste very bitter, so spit them out before swallowing, thus avoiding their potentially deadly effect. Whenever possible use public restrooms. (Locations on chart, pg. 22.) If you are on or by the river bring a double bagging pack-out system. In the backcountry, dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and bury the organic evidence. Bring an extra plastic/ Ziploc bag and pack out toilet paper, wipes, hygiene products and all trash.

A hub of outdoor adventure, Cooper Landing is nestled in the majestic Kenai Mountains along the turquoise waters of Kenai Lake and the upper Kenai River. It’s no wonder the community is known as the “Gem of the Kenai Peninsula.”

Most of the community straddles the Sterling Highway at the west end of Kenai Lake. Although home to 300 residents, the town swells into the thousands every summer as anglers, campers, hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts flock here to enjoy the famed upper Kenai River region. History Native Heritage Cooper Landing is the traditional, seasonal home of the Alaska Native Kenaitze Indian Tribe. Their ancestry is tied to the Dena’ina, some of whom likely migrated here from north of the Alaska Range.

Gold Rush History In 1884, gold miner Joseph Cooper and his crew traveled up the Kenai River from Cook Inlet. Ten years later he discovered gold near what is now known as Cooper Creek...and Cooper Landing was born. With the discovery brought an influx of people and when the gold dried up around 1910, many chose to stay on and either subsist on the hunting, fishing and gardening, or became guides, trappers, and fur farmers. A school and post office opened in the 1920's. Cooper Landing was eventually connected to the town of Kenai by road in 1948, and to Anchorage in 1951.

The Kenaitze Tribe remains here to this day and partners with Chugach National Forest to help showcase their heritage at two interpretive sites. The K’Beq archaeological site at MP 52.6 features short, guided tours on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and offers visitors a view of a Dena’ina house pit and cold storage pits. "Footprints" is a self-guided interpretive nature trail at MP 52.1.

Cooper Landing Historical Museum and Heritage Area

The Upper Kenai 2019 Visitors Guide

Because it is rich in Native and pioneer history, Cooper Landing is a Kenai Mountains Turnagain Arm (KMTA) National Heritage Area. Community Native Heritage areas are places whose collective stories are important to telling the story of our nation. (For more information visit www.kmtacorridor.org) Some of Cooper Landing's history can be seen at the museum at Mile 48.7 on the Sterling Highway. On site are a school house, built in 1955, and Jack Lean's Cabin, built in the late 1920's, which became the home of the Cooper Landing Post Office for almost 40 years. The museum is operated by volunteers and is open from Memorial Day until September 15th.

If you want to get on the water, Cooper Landing is the place to launch. Enjoy turquoise tranquility on a gentle, scenic day float. Liven it up with a thrilling Class III whitewater run through Kenai Canyon. Or try paddleboarding, canoing or kayaking on Kenai Lake. River floats are generally 2-3 hours, or 5-6 hours if you include the canyon. Watch for eagles, songbirds, waterfowl, bears, moose and more as you float through the incredible wilderness beauty.

Big Fish, Beautiful Water, Zero Motors

The Upper Kenai River flows through the wilderness from Kenai to Skilak Lakes and, because it's non-motorized, offers anglers pristine fishing beyond compare. Drift boat guides and outfitters help visitors fish for sockeye and coho salmon, Dolly Varden and monster rainbow trout. Boats typically launch from the Kenai Lake outlet just after the bridge at Sterling Hwy MP 47.5 and take out at Jim's Landing, near MP 58. If you prefer bank fishing, try your luck at MP 47.5, 50.7, 55, 57 or 58. Yes, you can move along the stream as you fish, but please respect private property! The Russian River flows north from Upper Russian Lake, through Lower Russian Lake and into the Kenai River. Near the confluence, the Russian River Ferry carries foot passengers to the busiest "combat-fishing" spot in Alaska. Be prepared for crowds when the salmon run is hot. It’s not uncommon to fish within 4 feet of other fishers – on both sides of you!

Fish Species Rainbow Trout is our favorite fish to catch, photograph and release. These native resident fish are amazing fighters and in the Kenai river system all year.

Dolly Varden are beautiful, brightly spotted fighters — perfect to catch on film and release.

Sockeye (Red) Salmon are the lifeblood of the Kenai River drainage. They feed the entire food chain with their eggs, smolt and carcasses. Reds are almost exclusively caught from shore.

Silver (Coho) Salmon show up in late August. These rambunctious fish give anglers lots of jumping action throughout the fall.

King (Chinook) Salmon spawn in the Upper Kenai River so fishing here is catch-andrelease for these monsters, which can weigh over 90 pounds. (Ask local guides/ outfitters about lower river trips if you'd like to catch and keep a king.)

Pink (Humpy) Salmon come into the Kenai River in force every even year. They can be great fun to catch but are not prized for their meat.

Upper Skilak Boat Ramp:

The boat ramp is at the confluence of Quartz Creek and Kenai Lake in the campground. The launch/parking facility is free.. Located at the outlet of Kenai Lake. Here to Skilak Lake is drift-only (no motorized boats). Boaters may need to row/paddle through slack water the first two miles. Pay the launch fee at the self-serve kiosk and either park there, or shuttle a vehicle downriver to take-out. Fee-based shuttle services are available. At the ferry crossing to the Russian River. It's a great ramp for floaters wanting to miss the slack water section of the river. This is a fee-based ramp; look for pay station at entrance to parking lot. This is the last ramp on the Upper Kenai. Take out here unless you plan to run the rapids! Parking is limited but stalls are deep enough to accommodate vehicles pulling trailers. Overflow parking is just a short walk away, on the north side of the Sterling Hwy. This area offers a boat launch, parking, and camping facilities at the upper end of the Skilak Loop Road. Camping is fee-based. It's a common take-out for floaters who run the canyon (outboard motor recommend for the necessary 6 mile lake crossing). Please note that Skilak Lake is prone to sudden and dangerous winds. Plan your crossing during calmer morning hours if possible.

Forget Your Lifejacket? Several launches offer life jackets to borrow for free, through the "Kids Don't Float" program. Remember, adults should wear life jackets, too! These cold waters have rendered expert swimmers incapable of staying afloat.

Boat Safety & Etiquette The Kenai River averages about 70,000 boaters a year. For your safety and smoother put-ins and take-outs for all, please adhere to the following: • Load and unload your boat, (staging of gear & supplies) away from the launch area. • All boaters need to wear a lifejacket or • personal floatation device (PFD) on the river. • If you are fishing, wear eye protection • (sunglasses) and a hat to deflect errant hooks. • Do not clean fish in boat loading areas! • Pick up your trash.

Birding at Tern Lake This marshy lake is a nursery for Arctic Terns each spring who flock here from as far away as Antarctica. They stay only long enough for their eggs to hatch and their babies to grow strong, but while they're here, they are fishin' fools.

History Moose Meets Mail Carrier As legend has it... A mail carrier traveling by dog sled along the historic Iditarod Trail in 1903 was met by a moose and had difficulty passing.

In 1909, Oscar Christensen and Mickey Natt came to this same area by horse and dog team and apparently had the same problem. They never left. Instead, they stayed and built a log cabin for themselves and a roadhouse that served as an inn and supply house for gold prospectors headed up north. When the railway blazed its way along the trail to the area, it too may have been stopped by moose — at least long enough to create a construction camp here. When completed in 1912, the area was naturally dubbed "Moose Pass." While many prospectors passed through Moose Pass, some stayed to develop local gold mines such as Crown Point, East Point, and Falls Creek. Several entrepreneurs built sawmills to supply timber for mines, local construction and the railroad and its insatiable need for hemlock ties.

The train took over mail service around 1927, but had a propensity to toss sacks of letters and parcels haphazardly out of the rail car. In 1928, pioneer Leora Estes Roycroft took charge of the situation and became the first Postmaster of what was then officially christened as “Moose Pass.” The Estes family went on to develop the first electricity for the community and eventually run the local grocery store, which is still in operation today. Hope has several excellent trails for hiking, biking and skiing. For easy and moderate hikes, try Gull Rock Trail, Resurrection Creek and the Wagon Trail. For steep, moderate to difficult hikes, check out Hope Point Trail and Twin Lakes. The Resurrection Pass Trail is a 39-mile traverse popular with hikers, bikers, backpackers, horseback riders and skiers in the winter. Residents ask visitors to drive slow and please do not camp on public streets or tidal flats.

Hope Today Accommodations-Lodging and Camping Hope provides visitors several choices for overnight accommodations, from B&B’s, cabins, a motel, to mountainside retreats and cozy vacation rentals. There is also a US Forest Service campground available but it is best to make reservations early. Visit www.hopealaska.us for list of accommodations. Hope & Sunrise Community Library The Hope Community Library is a treasure located within the Historic District in Hope. It was founded in 1987, and created as a resource for the Hope/Sunrise community and resides in the old historic schoolhouse, built in 1938. The library is funded through grants, fundraisers and profits from the Hope Community Library Gift Shop & Used Book Shed. The library is run by volunteers and is open most days from 12-4pm.

Annual Wagon Run On the third weekend of July, Hope transforms into a state-wide destination for runners, both young and old, to recreate the wagon trail journey of the original gold miners. This fun run is a 5K up and down dirty rugged trails and woods starting in downtown Hope and looping right back. Participants receive commemorative shirts, and awards are announced in a wide variety of categories after the finale (including a 90 year old who won "Most Mature"). The weekend also includes a parade of vintage cars, a pancake feed for breakfast as well as a BBQ in the afternoon, and the famous 25 cent cake walk. Live Music Hope, Alaska has an active live music scene throughout the year, and especially during the summer months. Hope hasn't changed much since the gold rush ended. Visitors will enjoy a quiet, historic trip back through time. Hope is what those who come to Alaska envision about Alaska - wooded surroundings, log cabins, a beautiful seaside location, charming places to grab a bite to eat, an old general store and friendly people. The population is anywhere between 150 and 250, depending on who you ask. The school district is a K-12, and it has about 15 children.
