avid volunteer with the Kidney Foundation of Canada. That summer, Virginia started her mountaineering quest, and conquered some of the tallest peaks in the world. Virginia is now raising funds and awareness about the Foundation before she tackles her next challenge in the Himalayas—climbing three peaks all higher than 5500 m this fall. And this comes just after Virginia graduated at the top of her class in May 2012 with her Bachelor of Arts degree, having received the Ambrose Kwok-Yau Lee Award and the UPEI Alumni Association Prize. She is currently working on her honours thesis at UPEI.

Charles Aondo is a fifth-year Business student living and studying a long way from where he grew up in Abuja, Nigeria, but who has made his “home away from home” in residence at UPEI. A 5’10” veteran midfielder on the men’s soccer team, Charles moved into residence during his first year, and decided he wanted to stay for many reasons: the staff, being close to class, and the great breakfast! athletics & recreation It’s easy to stay healthy and active at UPEI when you have access to great sport and recreational facilities! With our state-of-the art fitness centre, artificial turf field, first-class CARI Aquatics Facility and MacLauchlan Arena, and national-calibre track and field venue (UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place), UPEI boasts some of the best sport infrastructure in Canada. As a result, UPEI has hosted major regional and national sport competitions, including the 2009 Canada Games, the 2011 Canadian Gymnastics Championship, and the 2012 Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships. In 2011–12, UPEI had a record 54 Academic All-Canadian athletes playing in nine Panther sports: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s rugby, men’s and women’s hockey, women’s field hockey, and swimming. Devin MacKinnon speaks with a fresh enthusiasm as he reflects on his four years at UPEI. A psychology major, the 2012 graduate feels his degree made him more well-rounded, and that his theatre studies minor introduced him to a whole new realm of possibilities. Devin began acting in his first year of university and although he had never graced the stage before, he was comfortable, knowing that he had endless support from his theatre professor. Devin spent the summer with the Confederation Centre Young Company where he performed musical theatre full-time—and was recognized with their Summit Award. He’s also won a coveted position to train at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. Matthew Cassidy is a 2010 graduate of UPEI’s Bachelor of Business Administration program, where he specialized in accounting, and is past-president of the UPEI Business Society. He feels that the experience he gained at UPEI prepared him for “real-world challenges,” and taught him how to manage an organization, network, and budget responsibly. Matthew is confident and capable when interacting with clients at a local accounting firm where he now works. All applicants to our two-year BEd are required to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. The faculty accepts 75 students per year based on a combination of good grades and practical experience working with students.

A Certificate in Adult Education and a four-year BEd in Human Resource Development in collaboration with Holland College are designed for those wishing to teach in adult education settings. care unit (ICU) at his local hospital six years ago. The nursing staff there inspired him to choose to study nursing at UPEI. They made a difficult situation easier by showing they cared. Trevor went into nursing the next year and hasn’t looked back, graduating in 2012, and compares the dedicated, caring team in the School of Nursing with the ICU nursing staff he met years ago. With the support of his professors, he quickly landed a position after graduation in Fort McMurray. He’ll soon start a new role in the cardiovascular ICU at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton—he will be caring for patients who have undergone heart and lung transplants, as well as other varieties of cardiac surgeries.

The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at UPEI is one of five veterinary colleges in Canada and is the only institution in Atlantic Canada educating doctors of veterinary medicine (DVM). AVC is renowned for its quality educational programs and exceptional student experiences. The College has one of the smallest class sizes (60 students per year) and one of the lowest student-faculty ratios in North America. Admission to its four-year DVM program is competitive. Pre-Veterinary Stream—Faculty of Science
If you are a high-school student interested in veterinary medicine, UPEI’s pre-veterinary stream within the faculty of science allows you to meet the course requirements for admission to our doctor of veterinary medicine program. The pre-vet stream is a structured selection of undergraduate courses from various disciplines within the sciences. Pre-vet students participate in a variety of activities such as information sessions and presentations by professors who teach at AVC. Students who enter the pre-veterinary stream are not guaranteed entry into the DVM program. However, you can declare a major within science after two years, and complete that major within four. of Health Management. The ultimate goal of her research is to improve aquaculture systems and make them more economically and environmentally sustainable. The epidemiologist’s work has taken her to Chile, the United Kingdom and the coast of British Columbia, but she would like to focus some of her attention closer to Atlantic Canada. “I’m excited to be back at the Atlantic Veterinary College. This is where I received my DVM. I’m now working on research alongside professors who were my teachers. That’s really gratifying.”

Spending a semester in France while studying for her business degree at UPEI was “très cher”, but according to Jackie Skinner, the best investment she ever made. Not only was it an incredible experience, but also it changed the national Nicol Entrepreneurial Award finalist’s outlook and goals. After graduating in May 2012, Jackie realized that she missed the travel lifestyle she had been exposed to while abroad, and decided to pursue other opportunities. This fall, she is leaving to work on a cruise ship where she’ll tour 23 cities over six months in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Jackie’s job on board will be in sales. “I know that my experience at UPEI and in France helped me to obtain this position, and has equipped me with the necessary skills to succeed.”

how do i apply? Apply for undergraduate programs online using a credit card at upei.ca/apply or you can print the application form and send it by mail (application processing fee is $50–$100, depending on the program). To review course options, see UPEI’s Academic Calendar at upei.ca/programs. When you apply, also make sure your official transcript is sent directly from your high school, college, or university to the UPEI Registrar’s Office. High school students who apply by March 1 will be considered automatically for entrance scholarships. Please be sure that your high school transcripts reach the Registrar’s Office by March 1, and that your application fee is paid in full. If March 1 falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Use your college diploma to earn a valuable university degree!
Do you have a college diploma but always wanted a university degree? UPEI partners with Holland College on over 30 transfer and articulation agreements to provide degree pathways to graduates of specific college programs. Minimum criteria must be met, but Holland College diploma graduates are eligible to apply for admission and credit transfer to a number of UPEI degree programs. To learn more, visit upei.ca/transfer.
International Baccalaureate IB students are eligible to apply to UPEI with a diploma score of 24 or higher (grades below 3 are not accepted) and must satisfy the admission criteria of the faculty of choice. UPEI offers IB-dedicated scholarships and awards, as well as credit recognition for IB course work. UPEI awards a full year of credit (10 courses, each at 3 credit-hours) to students with an IB diploma with a score of 28 or higher (additional criteria). Individual higher level (HL) subjects completed with grades of 4 (unless otherwise noted) or higher on official IB HL exams could be considered for individual transfer credit. UPEI is proud to celebrate student achievement through a year-round, comprehensive scholarships and awards/financial aid program. We offer over $4.4 million in scholarships, awards, and bursaries!
» All first-time entry applicants are automatically considered for UPEI Entrance Scholarships if your application and high school transcript are received at the Registrar’s Office by March 1. Students with a grade 12 average of 85% or higher, based on courses used for admission and maintained through the completion of grade 12, will automatically receive Inspiring Excellence Awards, UPEI’s guaranteed entrance awards. Prince Edward Island high school graduates are eligible for provincial awards such as the $2,000 George Coles Bursary in their first year; the Island Student Award during second ($400), third ($600), and fourth ($600) years; and the $2,000 George Coles Graduate Scholarship in their year of graduation.*
