The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (SMCS) at the University of Prince Edward Island offers programs in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Video Game Programming, and Mathematics with Engineering—programs that make our graduates highly sought-after for many fulfilling and high-earning careers. All SMCS programs are built on a common first-year, where students take foundational courses and have an opportunity to learn their strengths and interests and obtain program advice. All programs have a co-operative education option. MATHEMATICS is the study of numbers, quantity, and space. Mathematics can be studied for its own sake (usually called pure mathematics) or as it is applied to other disciplines.
STATISTICS is the practice of collecting and analyzing numerical data, and inferring properties of the whole from a representative sample.
COMPUTER SCIENCE is the practice of understanding computer languages and understanding, designing, and automating algorithmic processes.
ACTUARIAL SCIENCE is the study of risk—usually associated with insurance, pension, and investment plans. Actuaries are in demand as professionals who develop solutions for complex financial issues.
FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS is the application of mathematical models to finance, usually to analyze markets and pricing.
DATA ANALYTICS is the specialization of ANALYTICS (the application of techniques
from Mathematical and Computational Sciences to discover meaningful patterns in data) which focuses on the examination of large amounts of raw data for the purpose of drawing conclusions about that information, including the prediction of future events or behaviour.
BUSINESS ANALYTICS is the specialization of ANALYTICS which focuses particularly
on business data and uses techniques from Business as well as Mathematical and Computational Sciences to extract information that can be used to improve business performance.
VIDEO GAME PROGRAMMING involves mathematical and problem-solving skills
in addition to programming and design of video games on traditional and nontraditional platforms.
MATHEMATICS WITH ENGINEERING provides a foundational Engineering program combined with more advanced mathematical training.
