The Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education offers a breadth of programs and activities that will improve your sense of balance, add a little fun to your campus life and even improve your academic performance. Being active – going for a swim, kicking around a soccer ball, or even trying out your moves in a dance class – will improve the way you feel, think and learn. Our programs and activities are designed to reflect and celebrate the diversity of our University of Toronto community and inspire those of all levels and abilities. Membership Info All U of T students who have paid incidental fees are automatically members of the Athletic Centre and Varsity Centre. U of T staff and faculty may join at special rates or enrol in the Joint Membership Plan, which includes the Athletic Centre/Varsity Centre, Hart House and the Faculty Club (see utoronto.ca/jointplan for details). We also offer U of T alumni memberships and community memberships for those without a U of T affiliation. Membership includes access to the Athletic Centre, Varsity Centre, and outdoor activity spaces (check online for details). Members must present a valid membership card (U of T students must present a valid T-card).

Members and U of T students also have access to a wide range of registered instruction classes. Fees for registered classes vary depending on the program. Locker Service Members have access to two kinds of lockers: day lockers and rented lockers. All locker users must supply their own locks. Day lockers are labelled, full-sized and only for use during the day. These day lockers are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All day locker locks and contents must be removed by the closing time of the facility every day; otherwise a $28.00 clear-out fee will apply. Rental lockers are available for a fee for the duration of the membership. Rental lockers are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. It is the member’s responsibility to know the expiry date. All rental locker locks and contents must be removed by the expiry date; otherwise a $28.00 clear-out fee will apply.

Locker contents will not be held beyond 30 days after which unclaimed items are donated to a local charity. The University and the Faculty are not liable for lost or stolen locker contents or for contents left after the expiration date.

Towel Service Towel service is included with locker rentals or may be purchased by members separately at the following rates: Per month – $5.50 Annual fee – $68.00 Daily fee – $2.00

Student and membership cards must be swiped for outgoing and returned towels. Members are responsible for towels they have received. An unreturned towel is considered a lost towel and subject to a $28.00 lost towel fee. Towel and Locker service must expire the same date as membership. Rates do not include HST.

LOCATIONS Parking and Bike Racks: Bike racks with camera surveillance are available at the Athletic Centre on Harbord St. and Classic Ave., and at Varsity Centre near the pavilion entrance on Devonshire Place.

Metered street parking is available around the periphery of the Athletic Centre and Varsity Centre. Underground parking lots near the facilities include Graduate House (60 Harbord St.), which can be accessed by travelling north on Spadina Ave. and east on Glen Morris St., and on the east side of St. George St. just north of Harbord St. For more information, contact the U of T parking office at 416.978.7275.

The Athletic Centre is located on the west side of U of T’s St. George campus at the intersection of Harbord St. and Spadina Ave. It is easily accessible from the Spadina subway station and by streetcar.

Varsity Centre is located on the southeast corner of Bloor St. and Devonshire Pl. (one block east of St. George St.) at the north end of the St. George campus. It is just steps away from the St. George and Museum subway stations.

Drop-in Fitness Classes Aquafit – Deep Water

Field House Circuit Orientation*

Participants will improve cardiovascular and muscular fitness and develop core strength. Aquafit eliminates impact on joints and reduces stress on the heart. Classes are held in deep water. Buoyancy belts are provided, but participants must be comfortable in deep water.

Learn to use the new strength and cardio equipment in the field house! This session familiarizes participants with the new single station strength training circuit as well as a selection of cardio equipment, including the innovative Adaptive Motion Trainers (AMTs). This class is limited to four participants. Participants should meet the instructor at the information window at the top of the stairs near the entrance to the field house.

NEW!

Barbell Basics* This session introduces the basics and breaks down the skills necessary to effectively perform the squat, deadlift and bench press, which are key components of any fitness or strength and conditioning program regardless of ability and/or experience in the weight room. This is a great introductory session for the true beginner or a review/refinement opportunity for the more experienced lifter. Women-only sessions are available. This class is limited to four participants.

Cardio Kick This energizing, inclusive class is a great full-body muscle strengthening workout that challenges and improves your cardio! All levels are welcome to come kickbox it out in this fun and supportive environment. NEW!

High/Low This classic aerobics class offers both high and low impact options. This is an excellent all-around workout, choreographed to music. NEW!

Move U Essentials Participants will learn the basic foundations of movement through proper body mechanics. Each class will begin with a 20-minute instruction session focused on one “movement skill.” A workout will follow, which will include resistance training, interval training and corebased movements. Participants learn how to effectively and successfully transfer these essential movement skills to the weight room or other group fitness classes.

Curves® Circuit

Nia

Drop in to our Curves® equipment studio to try the workout program that has helped women around the world get fit in just 30 minutes per visit. A qualified instructor will be present to answer questions and lead participants through each workout. Participants should allow at least 30 minutes within the scheduled class time to complete the circuit twice per visit.

Nia is a blend of dance, martial arts, healing arts and yoga. This is an energizing workout that helps you discover the joy of movement.

Dance Conditioning This high-energy class is designed to reflect the wellrounded physical training regimes dancers follow. Basic technique development combined with barre and floor work will develop strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

Learn to MoveU!

We all have to start somewhere! Watch moveu.ca for Learn to MoveU sessions. These workshops are short and sweet and give you the basics you need to jump into all kinds of activities. Whether you want to navigate the weight room with confidence, learn your ‘shimmy’ from your ‘merengue march,’ or learn a basketball layup, these sessions are beginner-friendly and sure to inspire!

Triple Blast Train for optimum fitness! Classes include a series of core drills, cardio intervals and total body conditioning exercises.

Triple Blast/Step Train for optimum fitness! Classes include a series of core drills, with cross training, step cardio intervals and total body conditioning exercises.

Strength and Conditioning Circuit Orientation

TRX Core Circuit*

This session familiarizes participants with the strength training equipment in the strength and conditioning centre, including free weights, stability fitness balls and other resistance and cardio training equipment. Womenonly sessions are available. This class is limited to four participants.

This orientation introduces the TRX Suspension training equipment, a complete weight training system that promotes strength, core stability and balance, and is suitable for participants of all fitness levels. Other core equipment will be used to complete the circuit. This class is limited to four participants.

Step

NEW!

This classic, simple, choreographed and cardiovascular workout uses an elevated platform and combines coretraining exercises and stretching. For those seeking an extra challenge, the class can be pumped up a notch with more explosive steps and/or a faster pace. NEW!

Step Basic Orientation This 30-minute session teaches the basic movements, terminology and technique associated with step classes. Pre-registration is necessary as space is limited to four participants. Check the schedule for days and times offered. NEW!

Stretch Works Emphasis is on mobility and stability. Develop balance, breath control and concentration through improved awareness of proper body alignment. This class will include an introduction to yoga basics and terminology. For more progressive yoga training, check out our registered mind-body classes on page 18.

Total Muscle Conditioning (TMC) This class focuses on dynamic stretching and overall muscle conditioning without a choreography element.

Tabata Blast This fun 30-minute class offers high- energy interval cardio and endurance training. Short bursts of 20-second, high-intensity exercise, (e.g. sprints and drills) will be followed by 10-second rest periods are repeated eight times to create four-minute tabata intervals. Warm-up and cool-down is added to the 30-minute interval session to get the ultimate benefit from this challenging class. NEW!

Triple/Tabata Blast The best of both worlds, starting with 15 minutes of Triple Blast and ending with a challenging 30 minutes of Tabata Blast.

Zoomer Fit Designed with the active older adult in mind, this class is a combination of low impact aerobic options, muscular strength and endurance conditioning and flexibility training. Great for improving overall strength, balance, immune system function and sleep. Though designed for our Zoomer members, this class is open to all ages and abilities.

ZumbaÂŽ This extremely popular Latin dance-inspired class fuses cardio with easy-to-follow moves that target glutes, legs, arms and abdominals. * This is a free registered program. Participants are encouraged to register at least 24 hours in advance.

Aging is a part of life that needs be celebrated — we may be getting older, but that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down! Many of our offerings can be adapted to accommodate to various levels so participants of all ages can enjoy them and reap the associated health benefits, including:

Our drop-in programs are a fun way to explore physical activity together as a family! These fun, family-focused programs are available to members and children under the age of 18. Dive, play, use inner tubes and simply enjoy the pool at your leisure. Parents and guardians are responsible for the children in their care while in the facility and must supervise their children at all times. Check online for detailed supervision requirements in the pools.

Varsity Arena invites everyone to come out for family skate. CSA-approved helmets are mandatory for children and are strongly recommended for beginner adults. All children under 12 and all beginner-level skaters must be accompanied by an adult member. Adults must wear skates and be on the ice with their children at all times.

REGISTERED PROGRAMS Whether you want to improve your swing, step or stroke, our registered programs offer highquality instruction in an inspiring environment. Athletic Centre members and U of T students who have paid incidental fees can register for:

Aquatics The Athletic Centre has three pools in which these classes take place. Find your fit and check our “Schedules + Fees” page in the “Fitness + Recreation” section of our website for details. NEW! A number of the adult swim courses are now also being offered as small-group lessons. There will be a maximum of six participants per class. Please see our schedules and fees, available on the website and around our facilities, for details. Adult Swim 1

Adult Swim 4

This course is an introduction to basic swimming skills: buoyancy, breathing, submerging face in the water and propulsion. Prerequisite: No previous swimming skills are required. This class is also available for women only.

Classes focus on improving stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Prerequisite: Participants must be comfortable in deep water and able to swim 25 metres of both front and back crawl. This class is also available for women only.

Absolute Beginner

Adult Swim 2

Basic

Participants are taught front crawl, back crawl, treading water, and deep water skills when ready. Prerequisite: Participants must be able to swim 10 metres on their front with face submerged and 10 metres on their back. This class is also available for women only. Adult Swim 3

Intermediate

Swimmers practice front crawl and back crawl and learn breast stroke, elementary back stroke and side stroke. More time is spent on deep water skills. Prerequisite: Participants must be able to swim 20 metres on their front and back. This class is also available for women only.

Stroke Mechanics

Swim Training

This course focuses on fitness. Instructors create a series of workouts and coach participants through them. Workout lengths average from one to 3.5 kilometres, and accommodate a range of abilities. Prerequisite: participants must be able to swim for 30 continuous minutes and perform 50 metres each of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke with good stroke mechanics. Adult Swim 5

Swim Training: Pay-As-You-Go

Pay-as-you-go allows you the flexibility to participate in the swim training class on days that suit you.

Butterfly Participants will learn the dolphin kick and progress to the full butterfly stroke. Prerequisite: Excellent stroke mechanics and swimming fitness in front crawl and breaststroke.

Springboard Diving Divers learn basic skills in a safe and non-competitive environment. Emphasis is on basic skills from the one-metre spring board, with the option to do three-metre and five-metre entries. All skill levels are welcome; no diving experience is necessary. Prerequisite: Participants must be comfortable submerging in deep water and be able to swim 25 metres.

This course offers a continuation of swim training through the exam period.

Swimming – Private Lessons Private lessons are offered in 30-minute sessions and are tailored to your specific needs. Choose from the pre-set times posted on the online registration system. Note: specific instructor requests cannot be accommodated. Semi-private lessons are also available for two participants with the same swimming ability; start by registering one client for the private lesson, then put the second client on the waitlist. Contact us at private.swim@utoronto.ca to arrange for the lesson to be changed to a semi-private format.

Certifications – Aquatics Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid

to lifeguard, one must re-certify before the expiry date on the card. If the certification is over 5 years expired, it is recommended that the candidate repeat a full course. Current Standard First Aid/Basic Rescuer CPR recommended. Please note the new standards will be used for all National Lifeguard recertifications. See www.lifesavingsociety.com for details.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Re-certification The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification must

be renewed every two years to remain current. This course will review the Red Cross Swim program and water rescue and teaching modules. Prerequisite: A Red Cross WSI certificate no more than five years from the certification date. Bring card and instructor manual to clinic.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Transfer Course

This is the first required Lifesaving Society course in the path to becoming a lifeguard and swim instructor. Prerequisites: either strong stroke mechanics and swimming fitness or effective stroke mechanics and strong swimming fitness. The Canadian Lifesaving Manual is required for the course and can be purchased in person at the main office. More detailed information about the Lifesaving Society programs can be found at www.lifesavingsociety.com

This one-day course allows instructors certified with other organizations, such as the Lifesaving Society or YMCA, to attain the Red Cross WSI certification. Manuals are included in the price and must be picked up prior to the course in order to complete the pre-course assignment. Co-teaching hours are also required as part of the certification process.

Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid

Certifications – First Aid and CPR

This course follows and builds on the skills from Bronze Medallion. It is a prerequisite for all advanced Lifesaving Society programs, including the National Lifeguard award. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid (need not be current).

National Lifeguard Certification National Lifeguard is recognized as the standard lifeguarding certificate in Canada. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross certificate, 16 years old by the exam date, and Standard First Aid/Basic Rescuer CPR issued by Lifesaving Society, St. John’s Ambulance, Canadian Red Cross or Canadian Ski Patrol. The Alert: Lifeguarding in Action manual is required and can be purchased in person at the Athletic Centre main office.

Airway Management This five-hour Lifesaving Society advanced first aid

module will teach participants about barrier devices, oral airways, VVAC suctioning, and oxygen delivery. Prerequisite: A current Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid/CPR-C certificate. Proof of this certification must be brought to the course.

Automated External Defibrillation (A.E.D.) This five-hour Lifesaving Society course is an advanced first-aid module that will teach participants how to deliver AED shocks to both adults and children. Prerequisite: A current Lifesaving Society CPR-A certificate (or higher). Proof of this certification must be brought to the course.

National Lifeguard Re-certification National Lifeguard award must be renewed every two years to remain valid. Prerequisite: Registrants must bring proof of their National Lifeguard certification on the day of the clinic. This award can be re-certified if expired, but in order

CPR – Basic Rescuer (Level C) Re-certification*

Dance

Annual retraining is recommended to remain certified as a CPR provider, and may be required by some employers.

Ballet

Standard First Aid and CPR Certification* The Ministries of Labour and Health recognize this full course in Standard Level First Aid as a certification for workplace requirements. CPR (Basic Rescuer, Level C) certification is

included. Canadian Red Cross or Lifesaving Society courses will be taught.

Standard First Aid and CPR Re-certification* Standard Level First Aid must be re-certified by the same governing body within three years of the certification date. CPR (Basic Rescuer, Level C) re-certification is included with this course. WSIB regulations dictate that participants must alternate between a one day re-certification and full course every three years for Standard First Aid. The Canadian Red Cross and Lifesaving Society are the only re-certifications we offer. Proof of your certification must be brought to the course. Capoeira Angola This ancient Afro-Brazilian tradition blends music, dance and martial arts. Capoeira is the result of a rule that did not allow slaves to fight or keep their traditions. Cycle Fit This group workout is performed on stationary bikes and is designed so that participants can ride at their own pace and ease up at any time. All classes are 50 minutes and generally include a 10-minute warm-up, 30-minute cardiovascular segment, five-minute cool-down and fiveminute stretch. NEW!

Cycle Fit + Yoga

Hatha Yoga This class emphasizes body awareness, breath and relaxation. Strong links are made to mindfulness, meditation and breath-work.

Pilates

This is a 50-minute, action-packed cycle fit and yoga class. We start with a quick warm-up and then lead through 25 minutes of challenging interval hills and sprints on the bike. We end with yoga on the mat and 20 minutes of core strengthening, stretching and cap it all off with a relaxing cool down.

This mat-based workout guides you to access your deep core muscles and stabilizers. Pilates elongates the spinal column while strengthening the musculature of the abdominal wall and back. Deep synchronized breathing encourages body awareness and relaxation.

This eight-week program will allow participants to progress through six individual exercise stations, each designed to improve mobility, strength, muscular endurance and anaerobic and aerobic capacity. These progressive circuit classes include resistance training, interval training circuits, core-based movements and fitness testing as a way to benchmark participants’ overall progress. In addition, each class will include a Q&A session with a certified nutritionist. This class is free, however advance registration is required.

Active Escape Walks Each walk will feature unusual and exciting routes around St. George Campus. These hour-long walks will showcase fascinating and undiscovered elements of U of T’s past and present. Learn to run These weekly training sessions are led by a running coach and are perfect for novices. They will incorporate the walk-run progressive approach to help build confidence, stamina, community and knowledge. The program will culminate in a 3k walk-run event. NEW! FREE!

Learn to train effectively and safely following appropriate exercise progressions under the supervision of a certified trainer. Participants will be introduced to a series of fundamental exercises commonly used in training programs such as squats, lunges and rows. Participants will learn how to create a personalized program using a variety of training methods and be familiarized with most of the resistance equipment in the weight room.

Olympic Weightlifting Level I This class is designed for true beginners with little to no previous weight training experience. Participants will learn the basics of weightlifting starting with the Olympic squat and deadlift and moving to the power snatch and power clean in a progressive manner. By the end of the session, participants will gain hip and shoulder flexibility along with leg and core strength.

Olympic Weightlifting Level II This class is designed for participants with previous weight training experience. The top down method will be used to teach the competition lifts, such as “The Snatch” and “The Clean & Jerk.” Participants will become more efficient at performing the lifts and will learn how to incorporate them into a workout. This class is a great introduction to the most explosive sport in the world. Note: For the advanced lifter, or at times of the year when Olympic Weightlifting Level II classes are not offered, please note that we offer a wide range of personal and group training options that may suit your needs. Weight Training for Women

These weekly practices are perfect for runners on campus looking for a group experience. Weekly nutrition information sessions are available just before the group hits the sidewalk. An experienced run mentor will lead these sessions.

Weight training is essential for strong bones, good posture and healthy body composition. Each session includes a variety of machine weights, free weights and stretch exercises. By the end of the four-week session, participants will become familiar with reps, sets and be able to determine starting and working weights. Participants will also receive one group personal training session to help them develop a personalized program.

Personal Training and Nutrition Consultation Our goal is to provide students and members with a safe and successful exercise routine and nutrition guidance that promotes healthy, active living. Whether you want to learn the basics, improve your aerobic capacity, build strength, train for a race, maintain a healthy body weight or rehabilitate, our experts are here to help. We offer 55-minute training sessions for individuals as well as specialty training and sport-specific high performance and Olympic weightlifting. Small group training offers you the opportunity to train with a group of 2-3 participants (maximum four). Through small group training, you and your friends will enjoy the benefits of individualized instruction from a certified personal trainer at an affordable price. While our personal trainers have the ability to work effectively with each participant’s baseline fitness level, it is recommended that the group have common fitness goals for maximum results.

and attack with a foil.

Seasonal Membership $250 (plus HST) This membership is open to non – members. It includes unlimited golf balls (one hour per day) and an introductory 30-minute golf lesson with a fully-certified Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association (C.P.G.A) professional. Pre-Paid Practice Card $99 (plus HST)

Golf Level I During the winter, lessons are held in the Varsity Centre dome. Pros from Angus Glen Golf Club will teach the mechanics of the full swing, chip shot, pitch shot and putt. Scoring and rules of the game will also be introduced.

Golf Level II Angus Glen pros will help you to improve your swing mechanics. Advanced swing theory and the fine points of ball control will be taught. Prerequisite: Golf Level I or a regular player with an average score under 100.

Gymnastics Gymnastics isn’t just for kids! This exhilarating program is designed for people with varying experience (beginner to competitive) in gymnastics. Gymnasts will be assessed and grouped on the first day into appropriate skill levels. There is an 8:1 participant to coach ratio. Learn gymnastics skills that will help improve your overall strength, agility and flexibility. Through progression-based teaching methods, participants in this program will be encouraged to develop their gymnastics skills and improve at their own pace.

This pass is valid for five one-hour practice sessions and includes unlimited golf balls.

Basic Skating Become a comfortable and confident recreational skater. Participants learn basic skills including balancing, gliding, pushing and stopping safely. If you have never skated before, or want to improve your fundamental skills on the ice, this is the course for you. CSA-approved helmets are mandatory. Advanced Skating – Small Group Lessons Advanced skating is for those skaters who have strong edges and fundamental skills that are ready to learn more technique and form. Students must have strong backward skating skills. CSA-approved helmets are mandatory.

Figure Skating – Semi-Private Participants learn a variety of skills, including spinning and jumping. Participants should have some figure skating experience. Figure skates are mandatory. NOTE: No rentals are available for this class. Participants must provide their own figure skates.

Squash Level I In this introductory class you will learn the rules, safety precautions and basic shots and strategies of the game. Focus will be on forehand, backhand, service and service return, with an introduction to volleys, drop shots and boasts.

Squash Level II Level II allows you to improve your skills and play with those at a similar level in a small group setting. Focus will

be on footwork, improving your swing and using more strategy in game situations. You will develop advanced shots such as volleys, drop shots, boasts, lobs, kills and digging the ball out of the back corners.

Tennis Level I

Karate

Learn the basics of the game. This course is for those who have never taken formal instruction. The mechanics of the ground-stroke, volley, serve, lob and overhead are introduced, followed by game rules and game situations.

This martial arts class builds physical and mental skills through powerful and graceful movements, focusing on basic techniques. Instructors are affiliated with the U of T Karate Club and Karate Ontario.

Tennis Level II

Kendo

Progressing from skills learned in Level I, this course will concentrate on improving the strokes that you already know and start using them in full-court play.

Kendo is the Japanese martial art of fencing. This class introduces participants to basic components of this martial art. Instructors are affiliated with the U of T Kendo Club. Equipment is provided.

Tennis Level III

Capoeira Angola

This course is for those who have taken Level II, or who can sustain a rally of 8-10 strokes and have a good serve. Your strokes will be analyzed and improved and tactical considerations for both singles and doubles are taught. Games will be played with an emphasis on consistency, control, depth and placement.

Tennis Level IV This is an advanced class for tennis players who play regularly, are proficient in all strokes and want to fine-tune their game strategy. Emphasis is on shot-making, court coverage and the application of winning tactics for singles and doubles. Spin-on serves and ground strokes will be covered in detail.

Intramurals

Fall Leagues September 12, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. is the entry deadline for field sports. September 19, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. is the entry deadline for court and arena sports. Winter Leagues Please check the intramural website in the fall (November) for winter league entry deadlines and captains’ meetings. Winter term games will begin during the week of January 6, 2014. Summer Leagues Check www.uoftintramurals.ca in the spring for more details.

The goal of the intramural program is to offer a wide range of competitive and non-competitive sports to meet the diverse interests of the student population. The most competitive levels compete across all three campuses of the university and this tri-campus level of play involves greater commitment to tryouts, practices, travel and competitive schedules. Other levels of play may be competitive or recreational. Current U of T students who have paid incidental fees are eligible to participate in the intramural program and must be a registered student in the term in which they are participating. Staff, faculty and alumni members with a valid membership can participate in certain areas of the program. Most intramural teams are entered by the college/faculty units. Students should contact their unit’s athletic representative for sign-up information. A detailed list of recognized colleges and faculties that participate in intramurals, the levels of play and the sports available can be found on the intramural website. Most leagues run for one academic term. Games are played on various nights of the week, while some sports are played on weekends. Many tournaments are also offered throughout the year, with most scheduled on weekends. Performance bonds and cost recovery fees vary depending on the sport and are fully detailed on the intramural website. The intramural staff are happy to help you get the information you need.
