Bike racks with camera surveillance are available at the Athletic Centre on Harbord Street and Classic Avenue, at Varsity Centre near the pavilion entrance on Devonshire Place and at the Goldring Centre. Metered street parking is available around the periphery of the Athletic Centre and Varsity Centre. Underground parking lots near the facilities include Graduate House (60 Harbord St.), which can be accessed by travelling north on Spadina Avenue and east on Glen Morris Street, and on the east side of St. George Street just north of Harbord Street. There is also underground parking below OISE at 252 Bloor St. West (access one block north on Prince Arthur Ave.), and surface parking beside OISE off Bedford Ave., as well as on Devonshire beside Goldring. The Athletic Centre is located on the west side of U of T’s St. George campus at the intersection of Harbord Street and Spadina Avenue. It is easily accessible from the Spadina subway station and by streetcar. 55 Harbord Street, Toronto, ON M5S 2W6

Varsity Centre (includes Varsity Stadium / Dome, Arena) is located on the southeast corner of Bloor Street and Devonshire Place (one block east of St. George Street) at the north end of the St. George campus. It is just steps away from the St. George and Museum subway stations.

Membership Info All U of T students who have paid incidental fees are automatically members of the Athletic Centre, Goldring Centre and Varsity Centre. U of T staff and faculty may join at special rates or enrol in the Joint Membership Plan, which includes the Athletic Centre/Varsity Centre/Goldring Centre, Hart House and the Faculty Club (see utoronto.ca/jointplan for details). We also offer U of T alumni memberships and community memberships for those without a U of T affiliation. Membership also includes access to outdoor activity spaces (check physical.utoronto.ca for details). Members must present a valid membership card (U of T students must present a valid T-card).

Change Rooms and Washrooms Athletic Centre The Athletic Centre change rooms are located in the basement. There are large accessible men’s and women’s change rooms with private cubicles for changing and showering as well as open areas. Change tables and steam rooms are in each of the men’s and women’s change rooms. The Privacy/Family change rooms are also in the basement and have two private change rooms for changing, open showers (bathing attire required) and two single user washrooms nearby. Day lockers are available. There is a small cubicle for changing outside the 25 yard pool and two single user washrooms located inside the pool area that can be used when the pool is open. Additional single user washrooms are located by the Strength and Conditioning Centre, the Dance Studio and the Fencing Salle.

Goldring Centre

Locker Service Members have access to two kinds of lockers: day lockers and rented lockers. Lockers and towel service are available at both the Athletic Centre and Goldring Centre. All locker users must supply their own locks. Day lockers are labelled, full-sized and only for use for the day. These day lockers are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All day locker locks and contents must be removed by the closing time of the facility every day; otherwise the lock will be cut and a $28 clear-out fee will apply. Rental lockers are available for a fee for the duration of the membership. Rental lockers are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Rental locker locks and contents must be removed coincident with the membership expiry date; otherwise the lock will be cut and a $28 clear-out fee will apply.

The change rooms for Goldring Centre are located on the second floor. Each of the men’s and women’s change rooms is accessible and has both open showers and cubicles for showering. Change tables are available in each room. Goldring Centre has alternate change rooms available for any user at the far end of the hallway, the Accessible Change Room and the All Gender and Family Change Room. Both have shower and washroom amenities inside the area. Lockers for these change rooms are just around the corner.

The University and the Faculty are not liable for lost or stolen locker contents or for contents left after a membership expiration date.

An additional single user washroom is located on the mezzanine.

Towel Service

Varsity Centre

Towel service is included with locker rentals or may be purchased by members separately at the following rates:

Team rooms 3 and 4 in the concourse under the stadium stands are used as the men’s and women’s change rooms for Varsity Centre. There are no lockers or towel service available. Varsity Centre has single user washrooms located in the Pavilion and at the South end of the concourse.

Per month – $8.75 • Annual fee – $105

Locker contents which are not removed as intended (see above) will be held for 30 days after expiry or clear-out. After that time, unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity.

Per month – $6 • Annual fee – $72 • Daily fee – $2.20 Towel service purchased at one facility provides access to towels at both the Athletic Centre and Goldring Centre.

Student and membership cards must be swiped for outgoing and returned towels. Members are responsible for towels they have received. An unreturned towel is considered a lost towel and subject to a $10 lost towel fee. Towel and locker service must end coincident with the end date of membership. Rates do not include HST.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Registered PROGRAMS Registered programs are a great way to learn a new skill or improve an existing one. Small class sizes and dedicated instructors will help you reach your goals. Many beginner classes include equipment or rentals are available. Registered programs are offered in multiple formats including weekly classes for a term beginning in September, January and May or as one time clinics and workshops.

All current members and U of T students can sign up for registered programs by following these three simple steps: 1. Browse our classes in the registered program descriptions section in this guide or at physical.utoronto.ca 2. C heck times and costs in the list of schedules and fees, which can also be found on the website 3. R egister online at recreg.utoronto.ca, or in the Athletic Centre main office, Goldring Centre main lobby and Varsity Pavilion. Payments can be made by cash (Athletic Centre only), debit card, VISA, MasterCard or American Express Classes are not held on statutory or university holidays, long weekends or during reading week. Occasionally classes may have to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Every effort is made to provide a make-up class; otherwise, a refund is provided. Refunds are available for most programs until the start of the first class of the second week of classes. Visit the website or contact customer and membership services staff at the Athletic Centre or Goldring Centre for more information. An administrative fee will apply.

DROP-IN PROGRAMS Drop-in programs are available for U of T students and members at no extra charge. Not sure where to start? Friendly staff, including Physical Activity Facilitators for drop in sports, are available on-site to answer questions and provide instruction. Updated schedules are available online at physical.utoronto.ca. Opportunities include: Strength and conditioning The Athletic Centre and the Goldring Centre both house strength and conditioning (SCC) facilities. Both facilities offer accessible strength training machines, free weights, Olympic weightlifting platforms and more. The Athletic Centre also has a full, single station weight training circuit in the field house. The Goldring Centre has Keiser squat racks and functional trainers. Women-only hours are available at the Athletic Centre during specified times.

Group Fitness A large variety of group fitness classes are available at the Athletic Centre and Goldring Centre. For complete listings see pages 12 - 15.

Cardio equipment Ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, adaptive motion trainers (AMTs) and rowing machines are available in the field house at the Athletic Centre. Treadmills, ellipticals, VersaClimbers and rowing machines are available in the SCC at the Goldring Centre.

Walking/jogging/running Indoor: Treadmills and ellipticals are available at the Athletic Centre and the Goldring Centre. There is also a 200-metre indoor track in the Athletic Centre field house.

Swimming Lane swimming, springboard diving, and fun swims are available at the Athletic Centre. Women-only hours are available in the 25-yard pool during specified times.

Outdoor: Walk/run seasonally at Varsity Centre’s 400-metre track.

Drop-in Group Fitness Classes Drop-in Group Fitness Classes are open to all levels. Modifications and options are provided throughout each class. Please check the website for new classes and updates. Aquafit – Deep Water and Shallow Water

Dance Conditioning

Participants will improve cardiovascular and muscular fitness and develop core strength. Aquafit eliminates impact on joints and reduces stress on the heart. Classes are held in deep or shallow water depending on the type of class. For deep water classes, bouyancy belts are provided, but participants must be comfortable in deep water.

This inspiring class is designed to reflect the well-rounded physical training workout that dancers follow. Basic technique development combined with barre and floor work will develop strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

Barre Conditioning

Fit Mix

Train like a dancer, move with grace, and tone all the muscles in your body. The ballet barre and/or body bar and other fitness equipment will be used for exercise variety.

An innovative workout blending elements of a variety of classes (e.g, dance conditoning + ZumbaÂŽ; cardio, core & barre conditioning; interval training, or other combinations).

Bollywood

Fusion

A fun dance workout based on the latest Bollywood inspired moves.

This class is a blend of fitness conditioning exercises, postures and stretches that improve core strength, balance and flexibility.

Boot Camp Fun Get ready for a challenging total body workout that includes cardio, intervals, sports conditioning, core and strength conditioning. All levels welcome.

Cardio Kickbox

Ginga A dance fitness class that combines movements from Capoeira, a Brazilian Martial Art form, with highintensity dance choreoghraphy, using different genres of captivating music. Kick, squat, and dance into shape!

This energizing class is a great full-body, musclestrengthening workout that challenges and improves your cardio! All levels are welcome to come kickbox it out in this fun and supportive environment. 12

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Tabata

HIIT alternates short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with recovery periods. Train like you mean it, push yourself with a high intensity interval-based workout, and get ready to sweat!

This fun class offers high-energy interval cardio and endurance training. Short bursts of 20-second, highintensity exercise (e.g. sprints and drills) are followed by 10-second rest periods which are repeated eight times to create four-minute tabata intervals. Warm-up and cooldown is added to the 30-minute interval session to get the ultimate benefit from this challenging class.

Interval Training This challenging intense interval workout alternates cardio and strength drills for optimum fitness results.

Mindful Moments Be more calm, confident and centered. Practice mindfulness meditation and/or yoga to increase relaxation and resiliency.

Movin’ Muscle Put more muscle into your cardio to enhance total body fitness. This loaded movement training class uses handheld weights to optimize and intensify low impact cardio training focusing on muscle, not momentum.

Nia Nia is a blend of dance, martial arts and healing arts, including yoga. This is an energizing workout that helps you discover the joy of movement.

Yoga

A drop-in yoga class that supports core strength, flexibility and mind-body connection. Emphasis on safety and alignment. Beginner friendly!

Zoomer Fit Designed with the active older adult in mind, this class is a combination of low-impact aerobic options, muscular strength and endurance conditioning and flexibility training. Great for improving overall strength, balance, immune system function and sleep. Though designed for our older members, this class is open to all ages and abilities.

ZumbaÂŽ This extremely popular Latin dance-inspired class fuses cardio with easy-to-follow choreogrpahy, for a total-body workout that feels like a fitness party and celebration!

Enjoy movements that release tension and calm the mind. Improve posture, enhance breathing and experience the benefits of stretching in a group. 13

Strength & Conditioning Orientations Strength & Conditioning orientations are for those participants who are looking for help and guidance in various aspects of physical activity within our strength & conditioning centres. The sessions run for the first four to six weeks of each of the fall, winter and spring terms and are led by qualified staff, who will answer your questions and help you on the road to achieving your fitness goals. These orientations are free, registered programs. Participants are encouraged to register at least 24 hours in advance as space is limited. *Women-only sessions are available in the Athletic Centre

strength & conditioning centre only. Classes are limited to four participants.

Cardio Equipment Orientation Learn how to use our cardio equipment at the Athletic Centre! This class familiarizes participants with a selection of cardio equipment, including the innovative Adaptive Motion Trainers (AMTs), Woodway Curve treadmills, rowing machines, Precor EFX ellipticals and all stationary bikes. Participants should meet the instructor at the information window at the top of the stairs near the entrance to the field house.

Keiser Functional Trainer Orientation Our Keiser Functional Trainers allow you to perform isolateral training (arms and legs work independently of each other). With Keiser’s unique pneumatic technology, you can adjust resistance using air pressure in small increments (by the gram) and the resistance can be changed at any time throughout the workout. The Keiser Functional Trainer will give you an enhanced speed and power workout and is an excellent piece of equipment for rehabilitation purposes.

Keiser Strength Orientation Learn to use the Keiser squat rack with the help of one of our qualified strength attendants. You’ll learn how to set-up for exercises such as the squat, deadlift, barbell bench press, military press and others.

Strength Basics Orientation Participants will learn valuable strength and conditioning tips on etiquette, proper lifting techniques, sets, reps and resting periods. Basic skills needed to effectively perform strength exercises such as the squat, deadlift and bench press are introduced. Each class is held in an inclusive, welcoming and beginner-friendly environment.

Specific classes are designed for men, women and members of the LGBTQ community.

Strength Circuit Orientation* This class familiarizes participants with strength training cable machines for the lower and upper body. Body alignment and technique with each piece of equipment will be reviewed. These sessions are offered in the field house and strength & conditioning centre. For the field house classes, participants should meet the instructor at the information window at the top of the stairs. The other classes will take place in the strength & conditioning centre.

TRX Core Orientation* This orientation introduces the TRX suspension training equipment, a complete weight training system that promotes strength, core stability and balance, and is suitable for participants of all fitness levels. Other core training equipment will be used to complete the circuit.

VersaClimber Orientation Demystify and learn to use this unique piece of equipment at Goldring! VersaClimbing combines both lower and upper body exercises into one natural vertical climbing motion. The VersaClimber can be adjusted to be used at a range of intensities from very low to maximal, which is unique for low-impact cardio machines. Available accessories allow for lower body-only or upper body-only training as well as partial weight bearing which is useful for rehabilitation purposes. Join us for an active orientation session and let our qualified staff show you how to incorporate the VersaClimber into your workout.

Fun Swim Dive, play, use inner tubes and simply enjoy the pool at your leisure. Parents and guardians are responsible for the children in their care while in the facility and must supervise their children at all times. Check online for detailed supervision requirements in the pools.

Family Skate Varsity Arena invites you to come out for family skate. CSA-approved helmets are mandatory for children and are strongly recommended for beginner adults. All children under 12 and all beginner-level skaters must be accompanied by an adult member. Adults must wear skates and be on the ice with their children at all times.

Swim Training: Pay-As-You-Go

This course is an introduction to basic swimming skills: buoyancy, breathing, submersion of the whole face in the water and propulsion.

Classes focus on improving stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Pay-as-you-go allows you the flexibility to participate in swim training classes on days that suit you. Should the class be full, priority is given to those who have registered for the course.

Prerequisite: No previous swimming skills are required. Adult Swim 2

Basic*

Prerequisite: Completion of Adult Swim 3 - Intermediate Swim OR participants must be comfortable in deep water and able to swim 100m of both front and back crawl and 25-50m of breaststroke and elementary back stroke. Participants must also be able to complete a distance swim of 200-300m.

Participants are taught front crawl, back crawl, treading water, and deep water skills when ready.

Swim Training

Prerequisite: Completion of Adult Swim 1 - Absolute Beginner OR participants must be able to swim 15 metres on their front with face submerged and 15m on their back. Participants must also be able to complete a distance swim of 15-30m.

This course focuses on fitness. Instructors coach participants through a series of workouts. Workout distances average from 1 to 3.5 kilometres, and accommodate a range of abilities.

Adult Swim 3

Prerequisite: Completion of Adult Swim 4 - Stroke Mechanics OR participants must be able to swim for 30 continuous minutes and perform 100-200m each of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke with good stroke mechanics.

Intermediate* Swimmers practice front crawl and back crawl and learn breast stroke, elementary back stroke and side stroke. More time is spent on deep water skills. Prerequisite: Completion of Adult Swim 2 - Basic Swim OR participants must be able to swim 25m of front crawl and back crawl. Participants must also be able to complete a distance swim of 50-100m.

Swim Training Interim This course offers a continuation of swim training through the exam period.

Butterfly Participants will learn the dolphin kick and progress to the full butterfly stroke. Not offered in all terms. Prerequisite: Excellent stroke mechanics and swimming fitness in front crawl and breaststroke.

Springboard Diving Divers learn basic skills in a safe and non-competitive environment. Emphasis is on the performance of basic skills from the one-metre spring board. Three and five-metre entries are optional. All skill levels are welcome; no diving experience is necessary. Not offered in all terms. Prerequisite: Participants must be comfortable jumping into deep water and able to complete the deep end swim test.

Private and Semi-Private Lessons Private lessons are offered in 30-minute sessions and are tailored to your specific needs. Times and locations may be selected from the pre-set classes. Certifications – Aquatics Please note: Prerequisites must be met before the start of the course; courses are designed for 100% active participation.

Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid* This is the first required Lifesaving Society course in the path to becoming a lifeguard and swim instructor. Emergency First Aid curriculum items are taught and evaluated. Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years of age OR Bronze Star certification (need not be current). The Canadian Lifesaving Manual is required for the course and can be purchased in person at the Athletic Centre main office. Detailed information about the Lifesaving Society programs can be found at www.lifesavingsociety.com

Bronze Cross* This course follows and builds on the skills taught in Bronze Medallion. It is a prerequisite for all advanced Lifesaving Society programs, including the National Lifeguard award. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid (need not be current).

National Lifeguard Certification* National Lifeguard is recognized as the standard lifeguarding certificate in Canada. Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age by exam date. Bronze Cross certification and Standard First Aid certification from one of Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol (need not be current).

National Lifeguard Recertification National Lifeguard award must be recertified every two years to remain valid. Prerequisites: Registrants must bring proof of their National Lifeguard certification on the day of the clinic. This award can be recertified if expired, but in order to lifeguard, one must recertify before the expiry date. If the certification is over five years expired, it is advised that the candidate repeat a full course. A current Standard First Aid/CPR-C is recommended.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens, and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs. Prerequisites: 15 years of age and one of: Emergency First Aid (or higher); Bronze Cross. Perform water safety skills and strokes to meet highest performance criteria of Red Cross Swim Kids program (level 10). Course materials are included.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Recertification The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification must be renewed every two years to remain current. This course includes a professional development module, a program update and a skill evaluation. Prerequisites: Red Cross WSI certification acquired since 1996; must provide valid proof. Course materials are included.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Transfer Course This course allows instructors certified with other organizations, such as the Lifesaving Society or YMCA, to attain the Red Cross Water Safety Instruction certification. Practice teaching experience, online learning modules, and a skills assessment are required for successful completion of this course. Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age. Provide documentation of one of the following current certifications: Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Swim Instructor, YMCA Instructor, Sears I Can Swim Teacher or Toronto Ultra Swim Instructor.

Certifications – First Aid and CPR Airway Management This five-hour Lifesaving Society advanced first aid module will teach participants about barrier devices, oral airways, VVAC suctioning and oxygen delivery. Prerequisite: A current Standard First Aid/CPR-C certificate issued by the Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol. Proof of this certification must be brought to the course.

CPR – Basic Rescuer (Level C) Recertification* Annual retraining is recommended to remain certified as a Cardio Pulmonary Rescusitation (CPR) provider, and may be required by some employers. *These classes combine adult and youth participants in the same program. Those under 18 years old must register through our children and youth programs. 20

Dance Ballet Develop grace and stamina in this introductory class. Classical ballet techniques are taught through barre and centre exercises and variations. No previous dance experience is necessary. All levels are welcome.

Dance Workshops

Standard First Aid and CPR Certification* The Ministries of Labour and Health recognize this full course in Standard Level First Aid as a certification for workplace requirements. CPR (Basic Rescuer, Level C) certification and AED training are included. Canadian Red Cross or Lifesaving Society courses will be taught.

Standard First Aid and CPR Recertification* Standard Level First Aid must be recertified by the same governing body within three years of the certification date. CPR (Basic Rescuer, Level C) recertification and AED training are included with this course. WSIB requires that participants with a SFA older than three years must complete a full course and must alternate between a one-day recertification and full course every three years. The Canadian Red Cross and Lifesaving Society are the only recertifications we offer. Proof of your certification must be brought to the course. Privacy Notice: All certification courses require candidates to be registered with the governing body (Red Cross or Lifesaving Society). Personal information, including name, address, phone number, birth date and email, will be shared.

Introductory workshops in hip hop, jazz, modern and other forms of dance are provided by campus dance groups. Get connected to the campus dance scene while exploring creativity, innovation and strengthening dance technique. Look for workshops presented by the Only Human Dance Collective, Silhouettes and Urban Dance. Registration required.

Cyclefit This group workout is performed on stationary bikes and is designed so that participants can ride at their own pace and ease up at any time. All classes are 50 minutes long and generally include a 10-minute warm-up, 30-minute cardiovascular, five-minute cool-down and five-minute stretch segments.

Cyclefit Get your heart rate racing with this challenging workout. Cyclefit is a small group fitness class led by an instructor to music. This cardio and strength workout is suitable for beginners and experienced participants.

Cyclefit - Flex Pack or Pay-As-You-Go Want to attend more than one class a week? Can’t find time for a regular class? Choose from the Cyclefit Flex Pack which allows you to attend any or all cyclefit classes or pay only for classes attended with the Pay-As-You-go card. Details for both are available online.

Yoga – Breathing Workshop Feel centred and grounded by exploring yoga and breathing techniques that energize, balance or relax.

Small group classes begin in late September, January and May and are offered at the same day and time once a week. With a maximum of 6 participants you’ll meet new people and improve your skills progressively, week to week. Workshops are offered as a single 1 - 2 hour session and focus on a specific aspect of the practice.

Pilates - Core Strength Workshop Your core supports you in everything you do! This beginnerfriendly workshop will introduce you to basic pilates exercises to build your core muscles and stabilizers. You’ll leave with a short workout that can be continued on your own.

Pilates – Technique Workshop Be introduced to pilates techniques to strengthen your core, increase flexibility and improve posture. You’ll leave this workshop standing taller and engaging your core.

Pilates – Small Group Class This mat-based workout guides you to access your deep core muscles and stabilizers. Pilates elongates the spinal column while strengthening the musculature of the abdominal wall and back. Deep synchronized breathing encourages body awareness and relaxation. 24

Building strength, flexibility and body awareness, this progressive class will teach you the basic yoga postures and relaxation exercises. You’ll feel more calm, relaxed and connected.

Bring health and well-being to your entire family with a family yoga session. Sessions are suitable for children 4 years and older and include yoga postures, partner work, interactive yoga games, and breathing and relaxation techniques.

Strength Training Building Strength Camp Interested in getting stronger? Sessions will focus on one element of a strength training program. Participants will be introduced to different exercises and strategies to include in their own routines. All sessions will be active and participants will learn how best to organize exercises, resting time, intensity and tempo to achieve their goals. A qualified personal trainer will design the workouts and the class will be small enough to provide individualized supervision as well as tips, guidance and advice as needed. All levels welcome!

Functional Muscle Camp Do you want to become fitter and build muscle at the same time? Building muscle is essential for overall health and wellness; muscle plays a big role in metabolic health, bone strength and body weight control. This practical camp will focus on the basic training and planning of muscle building. Various training methodologies including high intensity training will be utilized to achieve the best results. This is an active class. A qualified personal trainer will design the workouts and the class will be small enough to provide individual supervision, tips, guidance and advice as needed. All levels welcome!

Fundamentals of Weight Training Learn to train effectively and safely following appropriate exercise progressions under the supervision of a certified trainer. Participants will be introduced to a series of fundamental exercises commonly used in training programs such as squats, lunges and rows. Participants will learn how to create a personalized program using a variety of training methods and be familiarized with most of the resistance equipment in the weight room. NEW!

Movement Clinics Get a taste of the personal training experience! Each clinic is 1.5 hours in length and focuses on one specific exercise: deadlift, squat, power clean (Olympic lifting), upper body-pull, upper body-push. Easy-to-learn progressions and hands-on coaching will allow you to introduce new exercises into your workout routine or help refine your technique on specific movements. Whether you are an expert or a beginner, our trainers will make use of cues and progressions that will help you master the exercise.

Olympic Weightlifting Level I This class is designed for true beginners with little to no previous weight training experience. Participants will learn the basics of weightlifting starting with the Olympic squat and deadlift and moving to the power snatch and power clean in a progressive manner. By the end of the session, participants will gain hip and shoulder flexibility along with leg and core strength.

Olympic Weightlifting Level II This class is designed for participants with previous weight training experience. The top down method will be used to teach competition lifts, such as “The Snatch” and “The Clean & Jerk.” Participants will become more efficient at performing the lifts and will learn how to incorporate them into a workout. Note: Olympic weightlifting options available for personal and small group training.

Weight Training for Women Weight training is essential for strong bones, good posture and healthy body composition. Each session includes stretch exercises, and a variety of machine and free weights. By

the end of the session, participants will become familiar with reps, sets and be able to determine starting and working weights. NEW!

Roll it Out In this myofascial release class, you will learn self-massage techniques that will decrease your recovery time and risk of injury, allowing

you to get the most out of your workout routine. This class uses Triggerpoint GRID foam rollers and other props to help you efficiently target common areas of tension. It’s time to slow down and roll out the knots in your fascia to leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and limber. NEW!

The BIG 5 Muscle & Strength This class will focus on the five primary resistance training exercises: squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull ups and planks. These five movements will work all of the major muscle groups in your body, get your metabolism revving, make you stronger and optimize your body’s ability to burn fat. Find your appropriate starting and working weights, learn various training protocols and perfect your form and overall mastery of these classic exercises. High Intensity Resistance Training A qualified personal trainer will guide you through a series of pre-planned workouts. Each workout will include short periods of high intensity activity followed by recovery time. Lift & Learn Get a great workout while you learn. BOD POD Analysis

We provide safe, science-based and effective personal training and nutrition programs that promote healthy active living and enhance performance. Whether you want to learn the basics, improve your aerobic capacity, build strength, build muscle mass, train for a race, maintain a healthy body weight or rehabilitate, our certified trainers are here to help.

The BOD POD Gold Standard Body Composition Tracking System is an air displacement plethysmograph which uses whole-body densitometry to determine body composition (fat and fat-free mass) in adults. A full test requires only about 5 minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable, and fast test results. Book a BOD POD analysis today – it is a great tool to measure your progress!

Our personal training sessions for individuals are 55-minutes in length. In addition, we offer 45-minute nutrition consultations, fitness assessments, body composition analysis sessions, as well as our Get Fit and Team Lite packages. Small Group Training Interested in training with your friends to achieve your fitness goals at your desired day and time? Then small group training is for you! You choose your group of 2-4 participants, and enjoy the benefits of individualized instruction from a certified personal trainer at an affordable price. During the winter, lessons are held in the Varsity Centre dome. Pros from Angus Glen Golf Club will teach the mechanics of the full swing, chip shot, pitch shot and putt. Scoring and rules of the game will also be introduced.

Golf Level III This program will focus on improving your golf swing, as well as sharpening your short game and developing a pre shot routine to help you on the golf course. Prerequisite: Golf level II or an experienced player with an average score under 90.

Circus Silks Intermediate

Gymnastics isn’t just for kids! This exhilarating program is designed for people with varying experience (beginner to competitive) in gymnastics. Gymnasts will be assessed and grouped on the first day into appropriate skill levels. There is an 8:1 participant to coach ratio. Learn gymnastics skills that will help improve your overall strength, agility and flexibility. Through progression-based teaching methods, participants in this program will be encouraged to develop their gymnastics skills and improve at their own pace.

Have you already had some experience working on the circus silks and want to take your skills to the next level? Then this class is for you.

Trampoline* Trampolining is a fun and exciting way to improve your overall fitness level. Starting with basic trampoline skills, participants will be motivated to improve their abilities on the trampoline at their own level.

Circus Silks Basics Impressed by Cirque Du Soleil? Then you have to give this class a try. You will be introduced to the art of aerial circus silks.

Parkour Gymnastics Basics* In awe of movie stunt work? This class will teach you the building blocks to flip, run up walls like a superhero and cap it all off with a graceful roll. Participants will begin to explore the fundamentals of superhuman skills. Learn how to jump, land, flip, climb and balance safely.

Skating Level 1 Become a comfortable and confident recreational skater. Participants learn basic skills including balancing, gliding, pushing and stopping safely. If you have never skated before, or want to improve your fundamental skills on the ice, this is the course for you. CSA-approved helmets are mandatory. Squash Level I*

Tennis Level II

In this introductory class you will learn the rules, safety precautions and basic shots and strategies of the game. The focus will be on forehand, backhand, service and service return, with an introduction to volleys, drop shots and boasts.

Progressing from skills learned in Level I, this course will concentrate on improving the strokes that you already know and start using them in full-court play.

Squash Level II Level II allows you to improve your skills and play with those at a similar level in a small group setting. The focus will be on footwork, improving your swing and using more strategy in game situations. You will develop advanced shots such as volleys, drop shots, boasts, lobs, kills and digging the ball out of the back corners.

Tennis Level I* Learn the basics of the game. This course is for those who have never taken formal instruction. The mechanics of the ground-stroke, volley, serve, lob and overhead are introduced, followed by game rules and game situations.

Tennis Level III This course is for those who have taken Level II, or who can sustain a rally of 8-10 strokes and have a good serve. Your strokes will be analyzed and improved and tactical considerations for both singles and doubles are taught. Games will be played with an emphasis on consistency, control, depth and placement.

Martial Arts Karate This martial arts class builds physical and mental skills through powerful and graceful movements, focusing on basic techniques. Instructors are affiliated with the U of T Karate Club and Karate Ontario.

Kendo Kendo is the Japanese martial art of fencing. This class introduces participants to basic components of this martial art. Instructors are affiliated with the U of T Kendo Club. Equipment is provided.

Tennis Level IV This is an advanced class for tennis players who play regularly, are proficient in all strokes and want to fine-tune their game strategy. Emphasis is on shot-making, court coverage and the application of winning tactics for singles and doubles. Spin-on serves and ground strokes will be covered in detail.

Find Your Game! Make friends, have fun and enrich your university experience by playing intramural sports! No matter what your skill level, you’ll find an activity that’s just right for you.

Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a strictly recreational player, U of T intramurals has something for you. From large leagues for traditional favourites such as basketball, hockey and soccer to smaller leagues for lacrosse, field hockey and rugby, there is a wide variety of sports from which to choose. We also offer one-day tournaments. Look for events in softball, table tennis, badminton, dodgeball and much more. Tournaments also feature the Clubs Cup where campus clubs compete for glory!

Most intramural teams are entered by the college and faculty units, so contact your unit’s athletic representative for sign-up information. A detailed list of the recognized colleges and faculties that join the intramural program, including the levels of play and the sports available, can be found on the intramural website www.uoftintramurals.ca. If your unit doesn’t have a team in the sport that you want to play, you can still participate by entering the players’ pool or by forming your own team in the open division. Contact the intramural office for details.

Current U of T students who have paid incidental fees are eligible to participate in the intramural program. You must be a registered student in the term in which you are playing. Staff, faculty, and alumni/ae members with a valid membership may participate in certain areas of the program, too.

Most of the leagues run for one academic term. Games are played on various nights of the week, and some sports are played on weekends. Performance bonds and cost recovery fees vary depending on the sport and are detailed on the intramural website. The intramural staff are happy to help you get the information that you need to get started.

Entry Deadline Dates for Team Representatives Fall Leagues September 15, 2016 at 5:00pm is the deadline to enter field and arena sport teams. September 22, 2016 at 5:00pm is the deadline to enter court sports. Winter Leagues Please check the intramural website in late October for information about entry deadlines for winter leagues and captains’ meetings. Winter term games will begin during the first week of classes in January 2017. Summer Leagues Check www.uoftintramurals.ca in the spring for more details.

University of Toronto Development League The Tri-Campus Development League (the D-League) is a program designed for athletes looking for a competitive environment who want to develop their skills and take their game to the next level. The D-League offers you a chance to represent your campus, be coached, have weekly practice and competitive games each week and develop your skills. All games are officiated by certified referees. The development doesn’t stop with the athletes. Coach certification and referee development are key components of the D-League. Additional benefits include taking home your team uniform at the end of the season, and checking your stats and results online on a dedicated website.

Any current student at U of T is eligible to take part in the Tri-Campus Development League and represent their campus. There will be tryouts for each sport – stay tuned this fall for details on timing and location of the tryouts. Many games will take place on Sundays, and practices occur one night each week. Games are played between the St George, Scarborough and Mississauga Campuses at all three campuses. There is a fee to help cover the cost of uniforms, buses, and officials. Students from UTM and UTSC should contact their respective athletic department offices for details about their teams.
