LANG REPORTEMPLOYMENTMBA

Dr. Sean Lyons Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics

The students and alumni of the Lang MBA program are changemakers that lead with integrity and inspire greatness. They come from a variety of career levels, industries, cultures, and disciplines. This diversity of thought and experience is what sets the Lang MBA experience apart from other business schools. As you read this report, take note of the stories of our alumni and the career success and professional development they experienced thanks to the program.

Lang is also recognized as an AACSB accredited business school. AACSB accreditation represents one of the highest standards for global business schools. Globally, only 6% of business schools achieve AACSB accreditation. This high standard represents our commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous and meaningful peer-review process. As the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Lang, I actively promote values of quality and continuous improvement. I am extremely proud of our MBA program and its students and alumni, who form a family that boasts impressive credentials and dedication to improving our world. It is an honour to be a part of their journey.

It is my pleasure to present this Employment Report for the Lang MBA program at the University of Guelph’s Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics. This report celebrates the amazing talent of Lang MBA students and alumni and showcases their impact.

Lang is a globally focused business school, dedicated to inspiring leaders to use business as a force for good; and we are recognized as such: the Lang MBA program is ranked 5th in the world and 2nd in Canada for its focus on sustainable commerce.

An MBA as a Force for Good. The Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics is leading the shift to a more sustainable, responsible, and equitable world. Lang MBA faculty, students and alumni champion responsible business and how it can be a powerful force for good in the world. SUSTAINABILITY IS A HUGE FOCUS AND TREND FROM AN OPERATIONAL LEVEL, ALL THE WAY UP TO A GLOBAL LEVEL. IF EVERY BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATION HAS SUSTAINABILITY INTEGRATED INTO ITS BUSINESS GOALS AND OPERATIONS, IT WOULD CREATE A HUGE MOMENTUM TO ADVANCE SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS IN OUR SOCIETY. The Lang MBA also taught me the importance of informal leadership and that being a good leader doesn’t require a particular job title. Although informal leadership can be more difficult than formal leadership, it’s still a professional imperative to recognize the distinction.

The Lang MBA in Sustainable Commerce helped prepare me to become an effective leader on several different levels. From a skills development perspective, I was able to sharpen several skills, including public speaking, project facilitation, time management, financial management and data analysis. The program also encouraged the use of a macro and microlens in order to define effective strategies and build a plan to achieve them as a team. It also gave me the confidence to engage in difficult conversations in a way that shows accountability and respect simultaneously, whether with peers during the program or colleagues at work.

The Lang MBA program provided me with critical thinking skills necessary to remain competitive in today’s global environment. The very first course I completed, Business Fundamentals, was one of the most difficult yet rewarding courses in the program. It taught me to be clear, concise, and direct. Eliminating useless “business words” and ensuring that all parties understand each other. If we (Lang MBA alumni) are going to change the world, we need to be able to clearly articulate how to go about doing so.

Coming from parents who immigrated to Canada and raised 4 rambunctious kids always instilled in me a belief that you can accomplish anything with hard work. As I gained experience in the business world, I realized that the skills and education I received during my undergrad was not enough to influence change on a global scale at my organization.

The biggest takeaway from the Lang MBA was the people in my cohort. Completing my MBA was such a great way to meet and collaborate with classmates both inside and outside of my industry. A classmate joked that myself and a few other classmates would find him his next job one day. The connections I made over the last two years have been both enjoyable and fun but will impact my career in the future. This program checked the boxes for me as I was considering where to take my MBA. I was able to handle classes remotely, while still working full time, and still have the in-class experience to meet with my cohort and professors. The biggest takeaway for me was the flexibility of the program. Professors understood that the students in the program are working professionals and so were flexible with expectations, as needed. The content was interesting and although online for most of the program, still interactive. Being able to continue to work full time and finish an MBA in two years was a great setup!
