Summer “Beat the Heat” Movies Fridays, June 5, 19, 26; July 10, 17, 24, 31; Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28

2-3:30 p.m.

Presenters: Jerry Barlow, Larry Coffman, LaMerne Kozlowski and Warren Ronsheimer, OLLI members Summer is filled with tradition and one of those is our “Beat the Heat” movies. In summer, the Laxalt Theater is refreshingly cool — and you can even bring snacks. We have three professional movie buffs of the highest caliber: Jerry Barlow, Larry Coffman and Warren Ronsheimer. Just to keep it interesting we throw in one novice, LaMerne Kozlowski, who is not nearly as wise about the films, but loves movies. These four each pick one of the four movies shown each month to share with friends at OLLI. The movies run the gamut from very elegant classics to the wild and crazy. Please join us for a great time. Just make sure you know that some movies might run a little longer than 90 minutes. As soon as the movies are picked we will have fliers posted in the Nelson Building main classroom. You can also learn about upcoming films by calling the OLLI office, (775) 784-8053 or LaMerne Kozlowski, (775) 358-1746. This class is held at the Warren Nelson Building. For directions, see inside back cover.

Mystery Book Movie: The Ghost Writer Monday, June 8

16

2-4 p.m.

Presenter: Kenn Rohrs, OLLI member When a successful British ghost writer, The Ghost, agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang, his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start, not least because his predecessor on the project, Lang’s long-term aide, died in a unfortunate accident. As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled upon a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American Intelligence Agency while he was prime minister? And, was The Ghost’s predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered? According to Roger Ebert, “The Ghost Writer is handsome, smooth and persuasive and it’s a wellmade film. Roman Polanski at 76 provides a reminder of directors of the past who were raised on craft, not gimmicks, and depended on a deliberate rhythm of editing rather than mindless quick cutting. The film immerses you in its experience. It’s a reminder that you can lose yourself in a story because all a film really wants to do is tell it.” The film’s music is by Alexandre Desplat, who won the Academy Award for his soundtrack to the film, The Grand Budapest Hotel. This class is held at the Warren Nelson Building. For directions, see inside back cover.

Genealogy Thursday, June 18

1-2:30 p.m.

Presenters: June Kelly and Rosie Cevasco, OLLI members Genealogy is one of the world’s most popular hobbies. Hundreds of millions of people around the globe are actively engaged in some form of family research. It seems as if everyone, in some part of their lives, wonders where they came from. Maybe it’s the red hair that your mom says has been passed down from your Irish great-grandfather. Or perhaps a curiosity as to why Grandma never spoke about her family. Some people have become intrigued after visiting a battlefield and wondering if one of their ancestors fought or even died there. For others it’s the box of old photos or clothing that has been left to them by a relative. What starts as a simple curiosity quickly grows into an obsession. Forget shopping or gambling — climbing your family tree is much more addictive. Don’t say you weren’t warned. This class is held at the Warren Nelson Building. For directions, see inside back cover.

Summer Symphony 2015 Tuesdays, July 7, 14, 21, 28

10 a.m.-12 noon

Presenter: Claire Barnes, OLLI member The basis of Summer Symphony 2015 will be the Keeping Score video series produced by the San Francisco Symphony over several seasons. This genuine labor of love by Michael Tilson Thomas offers a vibrant 50-minute talk, followed by the San Francisco Symphony’s performance of the featured musical selection. Originally produced for PBS, the award-winning Keeping Score series demonstrates Michael Tilson Thomas’s commitment to music education as a way to demystify and share classical music. The first selection will be Beethoven’s Eroica symphony. Hector Berlioz: Symphonies Fantastique. In 1827, Hector Berlioz wrote a “fantastic” symphony created with a special theme, an idée fixe, to represent the object of his desire, actress Harriet Smithson. Follow the sometimes romantic, sometimes grotesque expression of the Harriet theme and learn more about what inspired Berlioz to create his first masterpiece. Charles Ives: Holidays Symphony. Coming of age at the dawn of the 20th century, Charles Ives saw the halcyon days of his youth fading fast. Not willing to let them go, he invented a striking new musical language to enshrine the feelings and ideals of a simpler time. But many, shocked by passages like the “fireworks” in Fourth of July, found his new-fangled methods at odds with the memories he was trying to preserve. Did Ives go too far? Or did he succeed in turning his memories into music? Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5. In 1937 Russia, at the height of Stalin’s purges, the communist party strongly denounced Dmitri Shostakovich’s most recent works. Fearing for his life, the young composer wrote a symphony ending with a rousing march. Gustav Mahler: A World of Experience. The music of Gustav Mahler reflects the world in which he lived — from a Bohemian village to glittering world capitals — as well as his intensely personal interior experience: his passions, his sufferings and his ongoing sense of being an outsider. Mahler filled his symphonic worlds with recurring tunes and rhythms from his past. Explore the world that inspired Mahler and the music he created. Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Hear work that shocked the opening night audiences. Follow the score and see the ballet, with insights from Michael Tilson Thomas and musicians of the San Francisco Symphony. Also hear an interview about the reconstruction of the ballet and costumes with dance historians Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer. Piotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4. Experience the masterpiece in Tchaikovsky’s own words. Learn about the event and influences that defined his character, his career and his genius. See and hear the instruments of the orchestra that Tchaikovsky used in his music. Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring. Explore the sights, sounds and influences that brought Copland to write music that gave Americans a sense of their own identity and created a truly American sound with excerpts from the original 13-instrument version of Appalachian Spring. Ludwig van Beethoven: Eroica. Explore the Eroica score to learn how Beethoven created this masterpiece. Learn how Beethoven wove the themes of Eroica to shape the emotional journey of the music. Find out why keys were so important to Beethoven. Hear insights about the music from Michael Tilson Thomas and the musicians of the San Francisco Symphony and then explore the fascinating stories behind Eroica. This class is held at the Warren Nelson Building. For directions, see inside back cover.

A planned gift is an ideal gifting opportunity for people who would like to further the mission of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno, but can’t afford to donate today. Just a few sentences in your will or trust, or a simple beneficiary change to your IRA or life insurance policy, may be all that is required. A gift made in the future can make a significant impact. When you make a planned gift to OLLI, you integrate your financial goals with your personal goals to help shape the future. Planned gifts are often in the form of a charitable bequest, but there are a variety of planned giving options that can provide significant tax benefits and even income to you or a loved one during your lifetimes. Planned gifts can be made using many different kinds of assets, including cash, stock, qualified retirement account assets, real estate, insurance policies, and even artwork or business interests. We would also like to invite you to join the Nevada Legacy Society, our honorary society for planned giving donors.
