Fearless Writing This seminar provides a hands-on approach to overcoming creative blocks and will help writers generate energy needed to write. Whether exploring poetry, writing a novel, or editing a memoir, there are myriad tools available to effectively get started or get back to writing again. Participants will identify energy-draining thoughts that impede the writing process and learn ways to counter and replace them wtih thoughts and activities that generate energy and facilitate the writing process. Writing Women’s Fiction Not only romance, but domestic realism, romantic suspense, mysteries, thrillers, and family sagas as well as historical fiction will be explored in this class designed for women who want to write fiction specifically aimed at women readers. Participants will learn about plot structure, character development, point of view, voice, believable dialogue, the necessity for conflict and tension, how to create atmosphere with setting, the pacing of scenes and rewriting, and polishing for publication. Sandra Toro, the published author of historical and contemporary novels, as well as short stories and a memoir, will teach this six-week class. Her book reviews have appeared in numerous newspapers and her nonfiction has been published in magazines such as Redbook, McCalls, and Environment.
Poetry Workshop: Prompts and Circumstances Find inspiration for your poetry in the unexpected: group prompts, odd prompts, timed prompts, surprising prompts. Don’t be afraid to write outside of your comfort zone. One or more poetry prompts will be introduced each week to energize your writing. Each session will include in-class writing time. You will be asked to produce a poem each week which will then be critiqued by the class. The process of writing will include gathering feedback for future revision and playing with ideas and language.
