Message from University of West Georgia President Dr.Brendan Kelly

At the University of West Georgia, we constantly strive to curate a first-choice institution, particularly for our students. To achieve that outcome, we must continually evolve to be more relevant to students’ needs. Advancing our research agenda is central to that core focus, as we create new knowledge and understanding to adapt to a changing world and economy.

In this report, we are proud to highlight the efforts of many faculty and staff who have secured external resources to support UWG students through our Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. These next-generation operating models create margin in our resources and facilitate our investment in what comes next in the 21st century – a key objective of our Becoming UWG Strategic Plan.

Sponsored programs like the ones featured in this report ensure our faculty’s teaching is world-class and relevant to the needs and expectations of our students both now and for years to come. Thanks in large part to the efforts of our faculty and staff who have secured these funds, we are better equipped to curate our operations around higher enduser expectations in order to emerge as the first choice for students, alumni, employees, and supporters.

I hope you appreciate this report and the outcomes it reflects.

3

Message from Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jon Preston

This is really important on a number of fronts because this is where innovation happens. It is also where the students at the undergraduate and graduate level engage in research alongside faculty. We need to make sure that our centers and our institutes are resourced, achieve outcomes, and really excelling as much as possible.

Faculty spend a considerable amount of time in research and scholarship. Typically, faculty devote 30% of their time to scholarship and research (beyond their teaching and service). This scholarship and research not only advanced UWG’s institutional mission aligned with the USG strategic priority of building intellectual capital and innovation, but faculty leverage their scholarship and research into their course content, bringing currency and relevance to their academic programs. This ensures that their teaching is world-class and most current.

UWG strongly emphasizes flexibility in supporting faculty in their scholarship and research, and in coordination with department chairs and deans, faculty can propose modified workloads, with increased scholarship/research and reduced teaching/service. Depending on the opportunity and results achieved, we can emphasize different work to honor the diversity of our faculty and be flexible in making sure that faculty are successful in all of these different areas.

Sincerely,

4

Message from Vice President for Innovation and Research Dr. Daryush Ila

Our vision is to inspire innovation and expand opportunities to meet the changing needs of the students, community and organizational partnerships. To create collaborative opportunities for student support, which build environments where students are exposed to innovative possibilities –from art and technology to entrepreneurial endeavors – and programs to promote campus safety, students’ health and wellness, and enhance students’ sense of belonging through equity and inclusion.

With intentional alignment to and in support of the strategic priorities of UWG, we aim to develop collaborations with new public/private partnerships to build community capacity and boost regional economic development, and become the leading innovation hub in west Georgia and east Alabama. We will lead the way with continuous growth in external contracts and grants, the creation of an economic development center, and expanded community health and wellness opportunities.

Through the innovation hub and economic development center, we intend to create innovation challenges that will result in job creation with family-sustaining wages. Encourage entrepreneurs and small businesses development by providing support in the development of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs and guidance in pursuing government contracting by partnering with the local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC).

Sincerely,

5

Overview

It is an honor and a great pleasure to highlight the efforts of many faculty and staff members who are securing external resources to support UWG students in the form of stipends and fees, as well as reducing the costs of education. By taking advantage of the grants offered through Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) and the Low Cost / No Cost Textbook Options, we were able to provide cost avoidance opportunities directly to our students. In efforts to support the campus community as well as the local west Georgia community, funds were raised for assistance and guidance in small business development along with support in substance abuse prevention in school settings. During Fiscal Year 2022, UWG was able to build strong partnerships with various universities, along with small and large industries. Additionally, UWG became a member of largescale university partnerships such as Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), providing a launchpad to help student, faculty and staff access resources, partnership and future employment opportunities for UWG students.

The comparison of the value of proposals submitted during the past three years (nearly a 350% increase) and budgeted value per year indicates an increase of over 110% compared to FY21. All colleges, schools, and other units have worked consistently harder during FY22 to secure more funding. This fiscal year proposals were submitted with an average dollar value nearly five times the average from the previous year.

The UWG centers, working with the Sponsored Programs office as highlighted in this annual report, have increased their share of external funding during FY22, with an emphasis to increase their share of external funding even more during FY23.

Enjoy reading the FY22 Sponsored Programs Annual Report and list of FY22 publications of our faculty as well as enjoy the fruits of the hard work by our faculty and staff.

Student Support and Opportunities

Approximately $140,000 worth of cost avoidance opportunities were presented to students at UWG through the Affordable Learning Georgia in FY22 alone.

Funding from the federal Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) allows the School of Nursing to make loans (forgivable up to 85%) to students pursuing careers as faculty teaching in schools of nursing.

The Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG)’s Affordable Materials Grants are intended to:

• Explore and expand course materials transformation to include the adoption, adaptation, and creation of open educational resources (OER); the adoption of materials available through GALILEO and University System of Georgia (USG) libraries; and the use of other no-cost and lowcost materials.

• Provide support and time to facult instructors, librarians, instructional designers, and other professional staff to meet, plan, review, and implement these approaches.

• Work toward equitable access to materials and lower materials costs for students and contribute to their retention, progression, and graduation.

The following faculty received $47,280 in funding in Rounds 20-21 of the Affordable Materials Grant:

• Jim Bellon, Senior Lecturer, University College

• Agnieszka Chwialkowska, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Marketing, Richards College of Business

• Elizabeth M. Pope, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Educational Research, College of Education

• Ashlee Davis, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Sport Management, Wellness, and Physical Education, College of Education

Annual Highlights for Proposals Submitted to External Agencies Through ORSP During FY22

THIS SECTION HIGHLIGHTS 5 OF THE HIGHEST AWARDED PROPOSALS IN FY22:

The Health Center’s Corey Hindman received a continuation award in the amount of $249,354 from the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council under the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program. The VOCA Program provides funds to reach and serve crime victims. Funding from the VOCA Program will allow Health Services to provide the space and equipment to deliver comprehensive victim services and make the campus safer for students with the use of the LiveSafe App and Flock Safety cameras.

The College of Education Early Learning Center Manager, Ashley Poole received $161,694.57 from Bright from the Start, a division of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning to coordinate and provide services for four-year-old children and their families served by Georgia’s Pre-K Program. The UWG Pre-K Program operates in accordance with guidelines set by Bright from the Start and is accredited by the National Association for the Education for Young Children. The teachers and staff work in partnership with the Early Learning Center’s research lab toward implementing evidenceinformed practices in a laboratory school model.

8

Sport Management, Wellness, and Physical Education’s instructor, Jamie Brandenburg, M.P.H., LPN, DE, and Assistant Professor, Duke Biber, Ph.D., will serve as co-PIs to implement the State Opioid Response (SOR) College Adopt a School Program in local area schools funded with a $117,500 award from the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Office of Behavioral Health Prevention. The Adopt a School Program trains college students on the value of peer support and its role in substance abuse prevention in school settings. These college students will then adopt a local high school and mentor youth to develop ways to prevent opioid abuse.

Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Lama Farran, Ph.D., received an award of $49,999 for implementing the research study, Talk with Me Baby with Natural Helpers: Teaching, Speech-Language Pathology, and Nursing Professions’ Early Language Knowledge. This research study will build upon findings from two previously funded research studies that evaluated Talk With Me Baby (TWMB) implementation at Emory University School of Nursing (Emory SON). A robust, interdisciplinary research team, including the University of West Georgia and Emory SON, will utilize implementation science to replicate the success of TWMB and scale-up implementation to a rural setting through training and embedded curriculum opportunities. Dr. Farran was also awarded $8,450 for expanding on the data collection by writing a literature review as part of the methodology to inform future implementation of shared book reading as a standard practice in NICUs and improve language and literacy outcomes in the state of Georgia.

School of Nursing Assistant Professor, Sally Richter, Ed.D., RN, received $49,000 from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP). The NFLP is designed to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by establishing and operating a student loan fund to students enrolled in advanced education nursing degree programs who are committed to becoming nurse faculty. In exchange for completion of up to four years of post-graduation full-time nurse faculty employment in an accredited school of nursing, the program authorizes cancellation of up to 85 percent of the original student loan amount.
