This year, UW-Parkside is celebrating fifty years of ensuring students from our region have the opportunity to achieve the dream of a four-year, university degree. In that time, we have witnessed the transformative power that education brings to students and community alike. In the past half century, UW-Parkside has awarded more than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees – the majority have been earned by first-generation college students. Proudly, sixty percent of all alumni remain in our region today. 2018 CHAMPIONS OF STUDENT SUCCESS AWARD The Fund for Wisconsin Scholars John P. Morgridge and his wife, Tashia F. Morgridge, established the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars (FFWS) in December 2007 to help make higher education accessible to talented public school graduates in the state. FFWS provides need-based grants to graduates of Wisconsin public high schools attending Wisconsin public colleges to support their access to and completion of college. As a long-term impact, the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars works to expand the number of Wisconsin college graduates, improve Wisconsin’s quality of life, and benefit society as a whole. UW-Parkside students have received nearly $3 million in scholarship support from the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars since 2008.
Mary Gulbrandsen, Executive Director Mary Gulbrandsen is executive director of the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars (FFWS). A pediatric nurse practitioner and former school district administrator, Mary has dedicated her career to helping children by combining her interest and expertise in health care and education. A passionate supporter of public education, Mary joined the Madison Metropolitan School District over 30 years ago and has served in a variety of leadership roles in the school district, including as chief of staff, where she worked on long-range planning, finance and operations and programs designed to improve student achievement. Mary also devotes substantial time to volunteerism and board service. She is currently a board member of the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation, the Fund For Wisconsin Scholars, We Think Big and the Opera for The Young. She serves on the Board of Visitors for the UW-Madison School of Nursing and the UWMadison School of Education.

WYLLIE SOCIETY FOR PLANNED GIVING Michael and Sheila Falbo, Honorary Co-Chairs There are few people who have been involved with and supported the University of WisconsinParkside as long as Mike and Sheila Falbo. UW-Parkside and higher education in general have played huge roles in their journey and have positively impacted their lives and the lives of their entire family. Mike began his college education at UW-Parkside back in 1971, just months after returning from Vietnam. He started at UW-Parkside in just its third year of serving the region and graduated in 1980 after close to a decade of studying part time while working in the banking industry. As well as being a 1980 UW-Parkside graduate, Mike is an emeritus UW Regent. His 11 years of service on the UW Board of Regents, which concluded in 2015, was highlighted by two terms as board president. That experience combined with four decades of success in the banking industry is the foundation for his extraordinary and significant support of UW-Parkside and the state of Wisconsin as a whole. Mike and Sheila view contributing to higher education as an important way of supporting the community, describing the relationship between universities and communities as symbiotic given that each is vital to the success of the other. They have made it a goal in their personal and professional lives to support all levels of education in any way possible. The UW-Parkside Foundation helps create what Mike calls “investment in the future.” As the honorary co-chairs of the revitalized Wyllie Society for Planned Giving, Mike and Sheila are leading the way. They believe that the Wyllie Society will have a continuing impact on students, helping them succeed no matter what is going on in their lives. WYLLIE SOCIETY FOR PLANNED GIVING The Wyllie Society for Planned Giving was established in honor of UWParkside’s first Chancellor, Irvin G. Wyllie, who served from 1966 to 1974. Just as Chancellor Wyllie led with a vision for the university’s lasting impact on students and our communities, supporters in the Wyllie Society provide a legacy that will sustain UW-Parkside’s educational mission for years to come. The Wyllie Society recognizes those who have made a planned gift of any kind to UW-Parkside or the UW-Parkside Foundation, and have shared information about the planned gift intentions with the university.
