Welcome classmates and Fellow alum! Welcome to OUR 2018 CNHS Community Event. This is OUR 4th College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) event. Each year this event gets better. Attendance at this event has increased every year. As important, YOUR CNHS advisory board, through board member donations and the proceeds from this event, funded four scholarships last year for CNHS students and, as you will see tonight, we will fund 4 scholarships in 2018. Please take the time to participate in the silent auction. The proceeds go towards future CNHS scholarships. There are some wonderful items available so bid early and often. Another option is a donation directly to the CNHS scholarship fund. You can donate at donate.uwp.edu/give. Every donation matters and every donation goes to a helping student at UW-Parkside advance their education. The CNHS advisory board was active this year. We met times where students and faculty presented information in their areas of study. This year we had some wonderful presentations in the areas of, Psychology: Research in the Perception, Cognition, and Neuroscience Lab at Parkside- Dr. Melissa Gregg, Chemistry: Mixed microbial fermentations as a platform for inexpensive production of novel biomolecules - Dr. Frannie Mann, and Health Exercise and Sports Management: Redeveloping Coaching Effectiveness: Perceptions of NCAA Division III Head Coaches – Dr. Sean Dahlin. We also received updates on the progress of the CNHS and offered our advice on how to continue and sustain those improvements. If you are interested in becoming part of the CNHS board, please let a board member know. Do not be deterred if you did not graduate from UW-Parkside. Many of our board members are graduates of other universities. Diversity of thought and experience is one of the benefits of the CNHS advisory board. Well, let’s take some time to have some fun – network – introduce yourself to others. Be proud of OUR scholarship recipients, be proud of UW-Parkside, and become involved in YOUR College of Natural and Health Sciences Russell Roberson, Ph.D. CNHS Advisory Board President

Message from the Dean: On August 1, 2018 I began my seventh year as founding dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS). I continue to work with brilliant faculty and staff who are very dedicated to student’s success. Students from the CNHS represent over 36% of all declared and pending majors in our university (RDS 9/26/18). Indeed, science is thriving at UW-Parkside. CNHS faculty continue to engage our students in inquiry, providing the scientific education that is critical to produce science-literate citizens, as well as producing individuals who have deeper knowledge to make the big decisions in science and health. Welcome to this fourth annual CNHS Community Celebration event. CNHS Advisory Board members are delighted that you came and that we can also engage in conversations with you about your experiences while attending Parkside and where your education has led you. We would like to share your experiences with our current and future students. We know the possibilities are endless. These conversations are a great reason to celebrate you. We are very proud of the accomplishments and contributions that our former students, you, add to our campus and in our communities. We continue to develop new programs that will serve the region. This fall semester, we started a new master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In spring 2019, a new master’s degree in Healthcare Administration will register its first students. By spring 2019, the number of master’s degree programs in CNHS will rise from one to six, compared to fall 2012. For Fall 2018 count, the number of graduate students in CNHS rose to 88 compared to 4-5 in fall 2012 (RDS 9/26/18). In spring 2019, we will teach the first course for a new Medical Laboratory Sciences concentration, which will lead students to certification by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Further renovation of instructional spaces in Greenquist Hall have been approved by the Wisconsin Department of Administration. If we receive the full funding requested, it will be a total of $2.7 million dollar! We will be building out an interactive classroom to serve the UW-ParksideUW-Milwaukee Consortial Nursing program, as well as provide opportunity for innovative delivery of other courses. The SC Johnson integrated Science Laboratory we opened August 31, 2017 is serving students and faculty well. Our students continue to attain great success. Students interested in health professions continue to attain acceptance rates to medical school twice the national average. Equally, our students place very well into graduate schools, or employment within their fields. One of our Physics students’ presentation was voted the best undergraduate presentation at the April 2018 American Physical Society meeting. Our undergraduate program in Sports Management is ranked number five (5) in the nation for 2018-2019 by Schools.com. Our Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics program was accredited by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology – only about 70 programs are accredited nation-wide, and now two institutions in the state of Wisconsin. Our Sustainable Management program was ranked third in the U.S. by Great Value Colleges website in 2017-2018. To all alumni, I hope this event will continue to be one of many return visits to campus. I am personally grateful to the CNHS Advisory Board, hosting this event, for their vision to gather the community to celebrate the many accomplishments in the college. I am equally grateful for the Advisory Board guidance and support of the college for the past five years. Thank you for joining us to share memories from fifty years ago or just last year. All of them are priceless to CNHS students, faculty, staff, Advisory Board and UW-Parkside.

AWARD PRESENTATION Tom Krimmel Tom Krimmel graduated from UW-Parkside in 1972, majoring in psychology. During his time at UW-Parkside, Tom was active on campus as captain of the hockey team and playing club soccer and rugby. Shortly after his undergraduate at UW-Parkside, Tom went to earn his master’s degree in educational administration at UW-Milwaukee. Since then, he has dedicated his career to serving students and the community. In 1979 Tom returned to UW-Parkside. He took a position as the Coordinator of Alumni Relations, which officially launched his career in Development and Alumni Relations at higher education institutions. During his time on staff, Tom eventually became the Director of Development and Alumni Relations and he helped establish both the UW-Parkside Alumni Association and the UW-Parkside Benevolent Foundation. One of his greatest accomplishments while working for UW-Parkside was leading the team that developed and implemented the financial plan to establish the university’s first campus housing. This has had a lasting impact on campus, and I know the students who live in Ranger Hall are grateful for your work. In 1986, Tom joined former UWP Chancellor Alan Guskin as Senior VP for Development at Antioch University and then served as Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at Babson College for 15 years, leading a team in securing over $122 million during a five-year campaign. Tom remained on the east coast until 2014, leading development and alumni relations teams at the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Throughout Tom’s career, he has made significant impacts on the lives of students, parents, and alumni at each institution he’s worked at. Whether he was helping the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship expand their services to low income school districts across the country or helping establish housing at UW-Parkside, Tom has given a great deal to his alma mater and the greater society. Tom is settled back in the Midwest, living in Cedarburg and working for Grenzebach Glier and Associates in Chicago as the Consulting Vice President. Today, he continues to give back and provide fundraising advice to UW-Parkside. Sharing his expertise with the UW-Parkside leadership team, Tom helps make connections and inspire giving from alumni. Tom was bestowed the College of Natural and Health Sciences 2018 Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

AWARD PRESENTATION Dr. John Werwie As one of the earliest graduates from UW-Parkside, Dr. Werwie earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1972, focusing on pre-health and majoring in chemistry. After leaving UW-Parkside, John went on to graduate from Marquette University’s School of Dentistry in 1976. Immediately after, John participated in a training program through Cabrini Medical Center Hospital Residency in New York City for two years. John’s trailblazing nature and his commitment to pursue excellence in the field of dentistry eventually led him to create ForwardDental, a large Wisconsin-based oral healthcare delivery network model. Today, John is a managing partner and practicing dentist at ForwardDental. The innovative model of ForwardDental employs more than 100 dentists in over 55 locations across the state of Wisconsin. It is one of a very few dental practices to be accredited by the prestigious national organization Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. for the last 20 years. As founder of the practice, John has lead the way and grown the organization into one of the state’s leading dental groups. John continues to be a practitioner who puts his patients first. He is dedicated to ensuring ForwardDental provides high-quality and affordable access to dental care. He has been recognized as a Doctor Leader of the Year, the Doctor Spirit Award of the year and has been an active leader and participant in developing the very first Caries Risk Assessment Registry in dentistry in 2017. Mentoring is important to John, and he has chosen to share his knowledge with promising dental professionals. He is a dental preceptor in the Marquette School of Dentistry Preceptor Program and serves as a mentor within the ForwardDental Doctor Mentoring Program. Additionally, John served as an Alumni-in-Residence this year at UW-Parkside. In March, he was on campus, inspiring students in the Pre-Health Club to follow their passions and take advantage of their Parkside experience. As an innovator in the business of dental practice, John certainly is one of Wisconsin’s most successful dentists. Dr. John Werwie was bestowed the College of Natural and Health Sciences 2018 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.

FALL 2018 CNHS SCHOLARSHIP HONOREES Nicholas Bielski After graduating from Parkside, I will be pursuing a PhD in a molecular biology. Specifically, I plan to attend the University of Arizona to study the long non-coding RNA associated with the enzyme telomerase. Because of the classes and faculty at Parkside such as my research advisor, Dr. Orlofske, I have learned new concepts and how to apply them to important research questions. In addition to laboratory skills, I also learned broader skills such as the importance of collaboration and working with a team. These skills coupled to my education have received prepared me for graduation and graduate school. My research experience, characterizing invertebrate responses to thermal stress using both ecological and molecular methods, has afforded me the opportunity to present at local, state, and national undergraduate research conferences and symposia. I received 3rd Place in the Undergraduate Oral presentation competition at the Annual Meeting of the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America, and the Annual Meeting for the Society for Freshwater Science. These experiences at Parkside not only provided me with the strong foundation for my education and professional development, but it also introduced me to life-long friends. My favorite memories from Parkside consist of random discussions with my lab mates and our “family lunches” we would have almost every day. Parkside provided me the knowledge, skills, and people I will need to succeed in my journey to graduate school and beyond.

Chloe Calderon I plan to graduate from UW-Parkside in the spring with a bachelor’s degree in physics. My next objective will be to begin graduate school next fall in pursuit of a doctoral degree in physics. After that, it is my great hope to become a professor of physics. The education I have received from UW-Parkside has prepared me for my future career. UW-Parkside has taught me to be a person who works hard, fulfils commitments, and is a productive contributor to society. During my time at UW-Parkside, I have had the privilege of participating in various research projects and speaking opportunities. As a participant on Dr. Sauer’s electrochemistry research team, I learned innovative techniques that may lead to new water purification methods and improvements in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Dr. Sauer and I presented the results of our research to the UW-Parkside board members. Also, I performed math research on diffusers with Dr. Ibragimov and Justin Van Ee. This past summer, I partnered with Dr. Mohazzabi to conduct research in both projectile motion and ice regelation. We completed a paper on projectile motion and it has been recently peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics. As a student panelist at the GEMS conference, I spoke to junior high girls to encourage them to enter the STEM field. Having so many good experiences at UW-Parkside, it’s difficult to pick just one. From becoming good friends with the parking lot shuttle bus drivers to attending school with my older sister who is in the nursing program, I will have many fond memories of Parkside. The biggest impact on me from my university experience would be from my dear mentor, friend, and professor, Dr. Mohazzabi. He has been my inspiration on this journey and helped me to discover my love for physics.

Valerie Strukel As a non-traditional student, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to complete my Health Information Management and Technology (HIMT) degree online through UW-Parkside. I initially began my education to ultimately work in a clinical role, but this remarkable program has challenged me to see healthcare in a different way and helped me to figure out where I fit into the big picture of patient care. Because of the flexibility of the online format, I can finally achieve my life-long goal of earning my bachelor’s degree and be an inspirational role model for my daughters. By the time I graduate in May of 2019, I hope to earn my Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credentials through early testing. I am interested in working for a larger health system, such as the Veterans Health Administration, so I can continue to learn and grow in different specialties. I am particularly interested in privacy and security, clinical documentation improvement, and health informatics. The field of HIM is constantly changing and the skills I have learned in the program will allow me to be successful in my career.

Justin Van Ee I am humbled that you selected me for this award! I know many outstanding students at UW-Parkside, so I am greatly honored to be chosen. My goal is to go to graduate school after graduation from UW-Parkside. I am considering programs in natural resource management that have a quantitative emphasis. I remember the first year I applied for the Parkside scholarships. In my arrogance, I believed I could take the whole lot! Who else had my accolades, my intellect, and resoluteness? Parkside has cured my ill-conceived vanity. In my time at Parkside, I have been blessed to work with some of the brightest students and best faculty, all of whom taught me humility. I have coauthored a paper with Dr. Ibragimov and former Chancellor’s Award receipt Rebecca Roembke. I collaborated with Dr. Mohazzabi, Dr. Ibragimov, and an excellent physics student, Chloe Calderon, on another paper. This past summer, I worked daily with Dr. Orlofske monitoring insects on the Lake Plain. I have also had the pleasure to work with Dr. Rogers and Liv Gripko studying goldenrod galls. In all of my hardest math classes, I’ve had Lukeus Perez as a close comrade in solving some inscrutable problems. And of course, I cannot forget my brother Nathan Van Ee. What a surprise, joy, and a recourse it was for us both to attend school together. From us wearing our lab goggles through entire Chemistry lectures, to proof reading each other’s essays, to long study nights together, we truly had a great ride! Above all else, Parkside has taught me how many kindred academics there are; people who absolutely love what they study, and readily apply it to improve the community.
