4 Prerequisites Basic knowledge of biology, psychobiology, cultural anthropology Programme Anthropology, the study of humanity past and present, has in Italy four main subdivisions: a) Physical Anthropology: The study of the human physical variation; b) Ethnology: The crosscultural study of today’s societies; c) Cultural Anthropology: The study of cultural variation among humans; and, d) Social anthropology: The study on how contemporary human beings behave in social groups. From these viewpoints, the discipline brings together studies of peoples into a meaningful whole. Because of this orientation, anthropology is steadily growing in importance in education, industry, business, and national and international government, as well as in politics. The course is devoted to a better understanding of the human experience from an anthropological perspective. It offers a holistic approach; it pursues an understanding of persons, their lives and experience, based on the knowledge of society and culture, of biology and psychology, that have been developed within anthropology. It offers students the opportunity to explore how human and nonhuman social behavior and psychology are shaped by interlocking processes of natural and sexual selection, social transmission, and individual learning. Emphasis is upon the interrelations of biological, psychological, and socio-cultural forces at different points in the life cycle.

Prerequisites None in particular. Programme The course consists of an introductory part in which I will address some basic concepts of plasticity in the developing brain. In particular, I will focus on neurogenesis and neural migration during prenatal development, on the phenomenon of “rise and fall” of postnatal brain development, i.e. dendritic arborisation , axons growth, synapses growth , and on the basic aspects of plasticity in the adolescent and aging brain. In the second part of the course I will develop further some fundamental concepts of neural plasticity, namely, mechanisms of neural plasticity and cortical reorganization, activity dependent neural plasticity, experience expectant plasticity, experience dependent plasticity. In the third part of the course I will focus on two methods to induce plasticity in the human brain: perceptual learning and transcranical current stimulation In the fourth part of the course I will describe the anatomical and neurophysiological bases of plasticity in the dorsal and ventral pathway of visual and auditory system as well as the development and aging of Magnocellular and parvocellular functions. This introductory session will be used as a framework to describe the plasticity phenomena in the developing and aging sensory system. In particular, for the developing sensory system, I will describe the effect of missing visual experience on cortical development and the Long-term effects of hearing lost in infancy. For the aging sensory SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY # COURSE UNITS HELD IN ENGLISH

system I will develop in detail the majors issues of neuropathology and sensory decline, plasticity mechanisms to compensate sensory decline and reversal of cognitive decline by inducing positive plasticity in sensory system. DEVELOPMENTAL COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE Second-cycle degree in Developmental and Educational Psychology (M2) Language: English Teaching period: first semester Lecturer: Teresa Farroni Credits: 6 CFU/ECTS 8 Prerequisites Basic knowledge on general Cognitive functions like: perception, attention, language and memory. Programme We will consider questions such as: What is the nature of developmental change? What are the brain mechanisms underlying cognitive, perceptual, social, and emotional development during infancy and childhood? We will also evaluate implications of findings from developmental cognitive neuroscience for broader scientific issues including nature vs. nurture, critical periods in development, and the modularity of mental functions. An integral part of the course will be careful consideration of the major methods of developmental cognitive neuroscience including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), recordings of evoked response potentials (ERPs), and behavioral marker tasks. We will devote particular attention to the unique challenges of applying these methods to the study of infants and children in typical and atypical development. Examination The exam will be oral and in English. More information http://en.didattica.unipd.it/didattica/2014/ PS1090/2014/000ZZ/PSO2044206/N0

10 Prerequisites Good knowledge of English and interest in environmental issues. Programme How is human behavior affected by the environment? In this course we will address four main areas of environmental psychology. Focusing on environmental cognition, we will first analyze how people process environmental information and how they orient in complex physical environments. We will then examine the powerful effects of architectural and design features (including shape, light, colors, etc.) on people’s behavior, thoughts, and wellbeing. In the third part of the course, we will then explore the effects of environmental stress such as noise, heat, pollution, crowding on people’s functioning. The last part of the course is dedicated to the question of behavior change, with particular attention to strategies aimed at encouraging proenvironmental behaviors. Examination The written exam will combine multiple choice questions with a few open-ended questions. More information http://en.didattica.unipd.it/didattica/2014/ PS1735/2014/000ZZ/PSP4064930/N0

Basic knowledge on research methods, on methods of statistical analysis, and on cognitive, social and cultural processes (and their inter-relationship) as regards, for instance, socialization processes, role transitions, self concept, and interpersonal relationships in various contexts. The course will also focus on issues of emotion measurement. Examination About 3-5 written open questions on specific topics dealt with during the course. Students’ own work on assigned readings will also be evaluated. If a student passes the exam, he/she can then ask to have an oral examination to improve the obtained grade. An oral exam can likewise be requested by the teacher. The examination focuses on the references listed below, and on the student’s report on scientific papers dealing with topics agreed upon with the teacher (for students who do not attend the course, on the report whose topics have been agreed upon with the teacher: see instructions on the course web site).
