WRITING FOR YOUNG ADULT (YA) LITERATURE

Explore and expand your poetic voice while sharing your writing in this workshop format. Enjoying the work of contemporary poets and writers each week, analyze and experiment with various forms and techniques as you develop your style and craft. During this course, students explore techniques for composing their own poems, looking at rhyme, rhythm, voice and form. This course is open to beginners and more experienced writers, eager to share and improve their work.

In this class, write stories targeted to the young adult audience, develop compelling characters and consider the market—taking time to evolve your story and craft along the way. Writers at all levels will learn how to source their own experiences for story ideas that will reach this subset of readers—moving from idea generation to the manuscript. WRITING THE SHORT STORY - HORROR In this class, write and edit stories designed to make the readers’ skin crawl. Work on creating suspense and build thrill into your narrative while also taking the time to evolve your story and craft. Writers at all levels will learn how to develop story ideas—moving from idea generation toward a final blood-curdling story.

SCREENWRITING - DEVELOPING THE SCRIPT No matter what stage you’re in, this course uses the workshop approach to help you ignite a new screenplay, make significant headway on one already in progress or finish a first-draft script. The overall goal is to make sure you have a strong movie premise, a clear genre, a treatment that tells the story well, an outline built on an exciting scene-by-scene sequence structure and a script that can be produced. Sessions include structural breakdowns of feature films, discussion of assigned readings, application of screenwriting techniques and pertinent exercises. You should be prepared to pitch your screenplay on the first night of class. The course may be repeated until a first-draft screenplay is completed.
