Year of Compassion 2022-23 Annual Report

This piece was displayed throughout all buildings in the University of St. Francis in late November 2023.

Artwork by Alvaro Robles USF Art & Design student and Marketing Services student worker.

This is both an installation and performance piece, made for the class Contemporary Art Practices. To create it, I traced a design I made onto a large cardboard sheet using a projector. After the design was traced, I used a box cutter and carefully cut out the traced lines to create a stencil out of the cardboard. The stencil was then placed over a white bed sheet and spray painted. Lastly, the words, “NO MORE VIOLENCE,” “PEACE,” and “LOVE” were stenciled onto the work. My intention for this art piece is to raise awareness of the war in Palestine and Israel. There is not much known about the young girl depicted, but the image surfaced during the height of the war. She was covered in bruises, scratches, and scars with a look of fear and distress on her face. I used her expression to instill compassion and empathy in the viewer and inspiring them to become more informed about the situation at hand.

PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dear Members of the USF Family, Welcome to the latest issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit magazine! This publication is one way the University of St. Francis strives to remain connected to you—our alumni, our friends, our parents, our employees, and our supporters—in short, our USF family. This year, Franciscans around the world are celebrating the 800th anniversary of the live Christmas crèche/nativity tradition that St. Francis began in the little town of Greccio in the Rieti Valley, about midway between Rome and Assisi. As Fr. Murray Bodo, OFM, writes:

Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D. President

Our Mission As a Catholic university rooted in the liberal arts, we are a welcoming community of learners challenged by Franciscan values and charism, engaged in a continuous pursuit of knowledge, faith, wisdom, and justice, and ever mindful of a tradition that emphasizes reverence for creation, compassion, and peacemaking. We strive for academic excellence in all programs, preparing women and men to contribute to the world through service and leadership.

He [St. Francis] came there wanting to celebrate Christmas in a new way, a midnight Mass with a real ox and donkey and with townspeople gathered around witnessing this live Christmas crèche. Christmas was the dearest of feasts because it revealed the profound humility of God in choosing to become a little baby, helpless and in need of us, just as we were when we were newborn babies… In doing so, St. Francis hoped that people would see themselves in the Christmas scene. It would not only be about something that happened 1,200 years ago in Bethlehem, but it would be something that was happening then and there to them. Their ox and donkey would be in the crèche, their children would see Christmas happening in Greccio, and everyone would see that the Christ Child comes to us in our own place and time at Christmas… St. Francis wanted to show everyone there how close God was to them, how humble God is, how like a child is God who loves us unconditionally. God is not removed in some faraway, mystical place; God is with us, and we can love him with affection and overflowing love, as God has first loved us and continues to love us. For St. Francis, a personal love of Jesus is the heart of Christian spirituality. And he himself was in constant conversation with Jesus. If things work as planned, you will receive this issue—either physically or via email link—during the Christmas season. It is a happy, special time at USF, as students complete their exams and prepare to spend the break with those who are dear to them… and as we celebrate our December commencement ceremonies. Even though the days are getting shorter, our Joliet campuses are ablaze with tens of thousands of lights that not only push back the darkness but also invite us to celebrate the light of the Incarnation—as our crèche awaits the arrival of the baby Jesus. (In a very special USF tradition, one of our longest-serving security officers, Wayne Heldebrandt, comes to campus each year at midnight on Christmas Eve to place the infant in our manger.) It is also in the spirit of the Christmas season that we celebrate our value of compassion in this issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit. Through compassion, we commit ourselves to loving our neighbors as ourselves— promoting empathy, forgiveness, and peace in the global community. (This is more important than ever before given the situations that face us around the world at the end of 2023.) The type of students that USF continues to attract are those who, like Saints Francis and Clare, put others before themselves—with about 80% of our undergraduate students in majors that represent helping professions. This issue shares many of their stories, as well as those of our alumni (our legacy!) who make real this value of compassion every day. This issue also celebrates the compassion that so many of you have shown to USF and our students through your generous support of our mission to prepare students to contribute to the world through service and leadership. Indeed, thanks to your generosity, as well as our sound financial discipline and practices, USF continues to build the resources necessary to ensure that our second century will remain strong—with net assets of nearly $60 million at the end of fiscal year 2023. So pour yourself a cup of coffee (or maybe hot cocoa, given the season), sit back, and enjoy this latest update about what’s happening at your University of St. Francis. As always, please know that I continue to consider myself incredibly blessed to serve as your president, and I promise to continue to work hard each and every day to earn the trust that you have placed in me! Peace and all good things...

Engaging Mind & Spirit Magazine

USF NEWS RANKINGS & RECOGNITIONS U.S. News & World Report continues to recognize the University of St. Francis as a top university in the country, with the release of this year’s 2023-2024 Best Colleges rankings. USF moved up in this year’s rankings to place among the top 280 schools in the “National Universities” category of this year’s publication. The Accredited & ranking placed USF twelfth among all Top-Ranked Illinois schools included in the report, seventh among private Illinois schools, and third among Illinois’ ranked Catholic schools. USF is also, once again, Will County’s only school included. U.S. News & World Report also recently released its 2023-2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings, and the University of St. Francis was recognized on four lists in the report, including Education – one of thirteen Illinois schools recognized; Nursing (DNP) – one of seven Illinois schools recognized; Nursing (Master’s) – one of nine Illinois schools recognized; and Physician Assistant. “USF offers incredibly valuable, nationally recognized graduate degree programs, which is certainly validated through recognition from organizations such as U.S. News & World Report,” USF President Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D., said. In addition, USF is one of the 150 best colleges in the Midwest according to The Princeton Review. The education services company lists USF in the Best in the Midwest section of its 2024 Best Colleges: Region by Region listing. The honor marks the sixteenth consecutive year USF has been named to this national listing. “USF is dedicated to preparing students to contribute to the world through service and leadership. We continue our work as an institution of higher education to create a shared tomorrow with the communities we serve and the partners with whom we work. National rankings such as this—a sixteenth consecutive year of recognition by The Princeton Review—demonstrate the University of St. Francis’ longstanding and ongoing commitment to student success in terms of retention and graduation rates and in-field job placements,” added Johnson. Princeton Review further featured USF for sustainability effforts in its website resource, The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2024 Edition, released in late October 2023. The guide is accessible for free at princetonreview.com/green-guide. On the local level, USF was ranked as one of the best schools in Illinois according to the WalletHub 2024 Best Colleges and Universities rankings. In this year’s WalletHub report, which was compiled by comparing more than 800 higher education institutions across 30 key measures within seven categories that included Student Selectivity, Cost & Financing and Career Outcomes, USF was recognized as one of the top eight overall colleges and universities in Illinois. WalletHub’s rankings also placed USF at #37 in the Midwest rankings, and ranked USF #1 in Illinois in the “Campus Safety” category for a fourth consecutive year.

USF AWARDS JOSEPH “TONY” DELGADO SCHOLARSHIP AT INAUGURAL LUNCHEON

DR. KARL MUTH, NEW EXECUTIVE IN RESIDENCE FOR COBHA SMALL BUSINESS ACCELERATOR

USF’s University Advancement office presented the new Joseph “Tony” Delgado Scholarship to its inaugural recipients during a special luncheon event. USF softball player Isabella Landeros and USF baseball player Matthew Lopez and were named as the first two recipients of the scholarship. The luncheon event was a special occasion filled with stories of Delgado, his love for athletics, St. Francis, and his community. During the event, longtime USF donor James R. Sefcik, Jr. explained why he started the scholarship in memory of Delgado and the impact he created. “Coach Delgado was a lifelong friend who made an incredible impact on so many lives. I wanted to ensure that his legacy lives on,” Sefcik said.

Dr. Karl Muth has joined the USF Small Business Accelerator (SBA) program as the Executive in Residence. Announced earlier this year, the USF Small Business Accelerator will provide equity-free accelerator funds and mentorship to businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved categories. In this role, Muth will lead the SBA advisory committee and will serve as senior mentor and advisor for new accelerator ventures. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Muth to our USF Small Business Accelerator team,” said Shannon Brown, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business and Health Administration. “Dr. Muth brings exceptional credentials in private equity, firm valuation, and senior-level leadership to the program.” Muth previously served as an Executive in Residence for the University of Chicago and has served in senior-level positions for a variety of entities including as CEO of a venture-backed financial tech startup, senior mentor at Microsoft Ventures (now called M12), and board member for a major Fortune 250 insurance company. He currently sits on the board of Venture for America, which helps identify passionate young people in underserved groups and underserved cities and connects them with the training, resources, and networks needed to start and scale their business ideas. The USF Small Business Accelerator program is funded in part through a grant with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Compassionate Hearts

In the United States alone, it is estimated that 20-50% of college students will face food insecurity at some point while receiving an education. With the economic changes the country is facing, this isn't likely to improve. Food insecurity also reaches students at the University of St. Francis, which is joining other colleges and universities in answering the call of need and addressing the issue in different ways. USF is beginning to uncover what the food insecurity statistics are specifically within the St. Francis community. 80% of Undergraduate students are commuters. While they don't live on campus, commuters are typically still involved in many activities, thus spending lots of time on campus. With compassion as one of the university’s four pillars (Respect, Service, Integrity, Compassion), recognizing student challenges and providing them with viable solutions is crucial.

Bernie's Closet is open Monday-Friday for students to stop in and find something that fits their needs. Whether it be a blazer, a pair of slacks or an entire pantsuit, the idea is that students can eliminate one more cost of entry to the professional world. Many items have been donated since the birth of this resource. While Bernie's Closet is housed in the College of Education, it is open for students of any major of study to use. A similar resource was recently made available in the College of Business & Health Administration. Another initiative available to students in need is the Student Emergency Fund. This program is just one of the ways that USF responds to our students' growing needs. This is a one-time emergency grant for students in response to emergency scenarios such as food assistance. The University of St. Francis is dedicated to the well-being and success of its students. In today's climate, where students may be

The University of St. Francis was fortunate to receive a $10,000 grant this year to kickstart an initiative to acknowledge the food insecurity students may be facing. The grant has been used to purchase and refill food in two food pantries on campus. Commuter lounges in the Motherhouse and Tower Hall are currently the designated spaces for the pantries, and they are being filled with food on a monthly basis. Additional donations are also being accepted. The food pantries are available 24/7 to any student who may need it, no questions asked. They include nonperishable food items, healthy snacks, and other food items that students may benefit from. In a similar Franciscan mindset, Dr. Donna Metlicka, associate professor of education, created a space known as “Bernie's Closet” in the College of Education. Bernie’s Closet meets the needs of many students regarding access to professional clothing. A quality piece of new clothing can far surpass the price a student is capable of paying and will prepare them for interviews or first days of work. Across almost every industry, professional attire is essential. To meet the need of students who may be entering the workforce, applying for jobs, interviewing for positions, starting internships, or even networking, Bernie’s Closet has wardrobe options available, with no cost. All alumni, parents, faculty staff and friends are welcome to donate professional clothing, outerwear, shoes, and other accessories in good condition.

facing any number of challenges in their lives, compassion on campus is crucial. Initiatives such as the food pantries and Bernie's Closet are just slivers of the overall compassion being shown to students during their time at USF. USF will continue to respond to the needs of students, and looks forward to continuing these initiatives successfully. To find our more or make a gift, visit stfrancis.edu/give.

GIVING TUESDAY &

COMPASSION Giving Tuesday is a global campaign based on the concepts of humanity and “radical generosity”... in other words, compassion. It is a campaign that started in 2012 with a simple goal: to encourage doing good. This year's Giving Tuesday campaign at USF is highlighting compassion, with its primary focus on the Francis Fund. Unrestricted annual support for the Francis Fund helps us continue USF’s long history of anticipating opportunities and responding to emerging needs driven by what we know students can accomplish.Ongoing support is essential to providing the transformative learning experiences and scholarships at USF. “The Francis Fund allows us the opportunity to respond to the emerging needs of our students. Enabling students to bloom and pursue a brighter purpose. Take part in Giving Tuesday and support USF students in pursuing their academic goals,” urged Lisa Sampalis, vice president for University Advancement. In the year of compassion, we encourage you to celebrate #GivingTuesday with us by sharing your time, talent, and treasure. Thank you for helping us to continue the tradition of a Franciscan education. Visit stfrancis.edu/givingtuesday to learn more and participate in this year’s campaign. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI’S COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS INSPIRES CAMPUS EVENT St. Francis of Assisi had a great love for animals and was known to show compassion for all creatures great and small. Because of that, he is now known as the patron saint of animals and ecology. In his spirit, USF’s Student Life division recently partnered with the Illinois St. Bernard Rescue (ISBR) for a heartwarming and therapeutic day dedicated to mental health. This special event invited students to take a well-deserved break from their studies and enjoy the company of some furry friends on the Quad. The ISBR, known for their dedication to rescuing gentle giants, brought a few of their lovable rescues to campus for students to pet and interact with. It was a unique opportunity for stress relief and a reminder that sometimes, a little canine companionship can go a long way in supporting mental well-being. 2023-24 Issue 2 - Year of Compassion

Homecoming 2023 has come and gone and we are pleased to share that it was a success. Not only was the weather warm and sunny, but the tangible Saint pride was present in every event, reunion, and interaction. This year many groups came together to celebrate, including COBHA with their inaugural Bloody Bags Tournament, the Student Government Association celebrated a reunion, the 1993 Champion Baseball team, Nursing Alumni Brunch, and many more.

Story by Aindrea Hogan Director of University Advancement & Alumni Relations

Additionally, alumni participated in various parts of the tailgate, including alumni Dance Team members hitting all the moves during the half-time show. It was certainly an enjoyable weekend and we hope this tradition will continue to grow.

This year during our Distinguished Alumni and Milestone Year Dinner, several alumni were highlighted with the Distinguished Alumni Awards as well as one Presidential Alumni Award winner. We also inducted four alumni into the Assisian Society for those celebrating their 50-year reunion from graduating from the university. It certainly was a weekend to remember. Homecoming weekend brings students, alumni, staff, faculty, and the community together! We hope you enjoyed and that we will see you at Homecoming & Reunion next year! Stay tuned for more information. Go Saints!

MEN’S SOCCER

Women’s CC Excels At Conference, NAIA Championships The USF women’s cross country team dominated at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships, claiming its ninth title in a row in early November. Head coach Trevor Howard’s team scored just three points over the minimum total with four of the first five runners to cross the finish line donning brown and gold. USF’s Alexia Bibakis paced the 95-runner field to earn CCAC Runner of the Year honors. Six Saints in all were recognized as all-conference, while Howard (‘14) was named CCAC Coach of the Year. From there, the Saints went on to the NAIA National Championships, where their seventh-place finish marked the sixth straight year that the St. Francis program placed among the top eight teams in the nation.

Top Scorers Rubio Guerra, FernandezArango Gain All-Conference Honors USF men’s soccer players Pablo Rubio Guerra and Sergio Fernandez-Arang—two of the top scorers in the CCAC—earned allleague status this fall. Guerra boasted the most points among conference players with 31, while sharing the top spot in goals with 13. FernandezArango finished third in the conference in total points with 22.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Reif Leads Men’s CC Team At Nationals, Gains Third All-America Honor Michael Reif became the most decorated men’s cross country runner in USF history when he led the Saints to a 21st-place finish at the NAIA National Championships in November. Reif, a junior, became the firstever Saint to earn NAIA All-America status three times in a career in the sport, doing so in three consecutive years by placing 31st with a time of 25:31.8. Two weeks earlier, Reif was one of five Saints to earn all-league status, along with Howard claiming Coach of the Year honors, when the program gained its fifth CCAC title in a row. FOOTBALL Defensive Player of the Year Reese Headlines USF Football Honor Roll For the third year in a row, the USF football program boasts a Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Player of the Year after the league office announced its 2023 honor roll in November. Kemon Reese joined five other former Saints in earning the distinction and the second on the defensive side of the ball. A graduate student linebacker, Reese was one of 15 Saints honored with five players being named to the first team, six garnering secondteam accolades and three collecting honorable-mention recognition. Defensive coordinator Thomas Miller was also chosen as the MSFA Assistant Coach of the Year. 10 Engaging Mind & Spirit Magazine

WOMEN’S SOCCER Women’s Soccer’s Flores Named CCAC Freshman of the Year, Two Others Also Recognized USF women’s soccer newcomers Kelly Flores and Zoe Villont and veteran Litzy Mendez all claimed CCAC postseason honors this fall with Flores becoming the second Saint in as many years to garner conference Freshman of the Year distinction. Flores finished atop the team leader board in all four offensive statistical categories with her six goals, three assists, 15 points and two game-winning goals. Villont was a key piece to a St. Francis defense that totaled five shutouts and allowed just ten goals in 11 conference games. Mendez finished tied for second on USF’s team with her five goals and 11 points. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Three Saints Collect All-Conference Plaudits USF’s Desiree Anderson secured all-CCAC women’s volleyball honors for the third straight year, Gabriela Oliveira repeated on the team and Kaylie Sippel joined the duo for the first time this year when postseason honors were announced. Anderson placed ninth in the league in digs per set (2.95) and tenth in kills per set (2.75), while Oliveira ranked fourth-best in the league in kills per set (3.71). Sippel earned her first all-conference accolades after ranking fourth in the league in assists per set (8.01).

Tony Delgado, one of only five individuals to have their number retired in the 51-year history of the University of St. Francis athletics program, passed away on June 14, 2023. Delgado, who celebrated his 80th birthday just one day earlier, was the co-architect of seven NAIA World Series teams alongside head coach Gordie Gillespie for 15 years at St. Francis, including the 1993 national championship team. The two worked together on the diamond for 20 years in all, including five seasons at nearby Lewis University, where they won another two NAIA titles together. “We are devastated to hear the news of Tony’s passing and offer our deepest condolences to his wife JoAnn, his children Joelle and Jerred and the rest of Tony’s large extended family,” said USF director of athletics Dave Laketa. “Bring up Tony’s name to anyone and you will get the same response, a great man and mentor and an absolute gentleman whose kindness and sincerity were unmatched. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.” Delgado came to St. Francis in 1980 as an assistant coach in baseball and women’s basketball, while also serving as the school’s intramural director. He became just the third head coach in the history of the baseball program in 1996 and led the Fighting Saints to 296 wins, two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference titles, three league tournament titles and eight winning seasons during his ten-year run. Delgado retired in 2005 and was inducted into the athletic department’s Hall of Fame in 2009. “Tony was an extraordinary man,” stated former USF athletic chairman and director of athletics Pat Sullivan, who also was a teammate of Delgado’s at Lewis. “How blessed we all have been to have had Tony in our lives. He was as solid and as principled a man as you will ever meet.” A 1961 graduate of Harrison High School in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, Delgado was the starting shortstop for the 1959 team that captured runner-up honors in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Baseball State Tournament. He also was selected to play in the City vs. Suburban All-Star Baseball Game in 1961, not to mention competing in basketball for four seasons. Gillespie was actually recruiting a player on the opposing team when he came across Delgado and his hustling play on the basketball court at Harrison. He went on to star in both basketball and baseball at the Romeoville-based school from 1961-65. During that time, Delgado played shortstop on two World Series qualifiers (1962, 1963) for the Flyers and was the point guard for Gillespie’s only NAIA national tournament team in the 1964-65 season. That same year, he was named a Second Team NAIA All-American after

averaging 17.0 points per game. He was also twice selected to the NAIA All-District 20 Team in baseball. Delgado was inducted into Lewis’ Hall of Fame in 1982. He was also the 2019 recipient of the Robert E. Smith Achievement Award, which is given annually to a coach or administrator who has given oneself in an unselfish manner to the promotion of NAIA Baseball. Besides coaching at St. Francis and Lewis, where he also coached basketball and tennis, Delgado had brief stints at Roncalli High School (now Aurora Central Catholic High School), Loras College and Illinois Institute of Technology. Upon retiring, Delgado gained his greatest joy in teaching the game of baseball and giving lessons, which he was still doing until his death. “Everyone loved Tony’s summer baseball camps and would sign up for every session every year starting in kindergarten and going through eighth grade,” remembered Laketa. “There weren’t too many young kids, both boys and girls, in the Joliet and surrounding areas that weren’t a part of his baseball camps growing up each summer.” “Tony had an unbelievable love for kids, St. Francis and all of our programs. We will miss seeing him at all of our home events and giving baseball lessons in the Sullivan Center.”
